For some reason, on my Nexus 5 (also it seems on KitKat in general because I had this issue on a buddies Nexus 4) it seems that when I download an APK file (or if I try to click a link to install an app from Aptoide via Chrome) the downloaded file does not work right. For Aptoide files pops up a notification that says it can not open that type of file. For APK's, it oddly enough initiates a popup for Nova launcher to restore settings from another launcher to Nova. Please, do not suggest that I uninstall Nova.. that may possibly solve the symptom of opening up Nova when I click an APK but doesn't solve the problem. With Nova uninstalled, it just says 'can not open file' like the Aptoide files.
FYI Aptoide files, pre-KitKat on my old Nexus 4, would open up Aptoide and install the app I clicked on in the browser as it is designed. Obviously, APK files would bring up the built-in installer.
Suggestions? Anyone else have this problem?

I'm having the same Nova/APK issue - on my GS3 (d2att) running CM 10.2 if I download an APK file then tap to open it from the notification bar or the Downloads app, it brings up the same Nova message you are getting. However, if I open the file from within the File Manager app it loads correctly. Very strange - wish I knew how to correct this without removing Nova...
Bump... Anyone?

Same problem here. "Solved" it by installing the apk thru root browser. Still not sure why it's behaving like this..

The application in question, is used basically like a client server app, similar to torrents. Unfortunately, although it can be used for good purposes, it also allows paid apps to be distributed, thus constituting "warez", which of course is against XDA rules.

Hello
I have jus upgraded my Nexus S to ICS OTA (manually) and cannot install application that I own. It cannot be found in phone's market and on the page in my desktop computer it says that this app is incomatible with my Samsung Nexus S. Can sth. be done? I have bought this app, this is crazy that I cannot use it!
When i updated to ICS i couldn't find ES File Explorer in market, no idea why not. However from memory i fixed it just by googling the name and clicking on the market link, then opening it with the market app (option pops up). Alternatively, the market now has a sync feature, click install on your computer browser and it will "send" it to your phone (ie. download it from market automatically).

That's not Google's fault. The developer of your app restricted it based on android version number. Complain to the app developer.
App author needs to update version and possibly updates it for ICS compatibility. Not ICS fault. Here's a workaround: if you have another Android device that can install the app from the Market, extract the app apk using Astro (app backup), copy the apk to your phone's sdcard, and manually install it.

Not app's fault
I had this happen with a bunch of apps on my Optimus V and I really don't think it's the devs' fault. I was looking through Tripit's androidmanifest.xml file and there are no device restrictions (besides SDK minimum of 3). Also when I try to install them manually, I just get "application not installed". It's driving me batty, I might have to downgrade.
Sprint gs5, CM-root, TWRP, SDfix...
I have an app which I do not want updates to...
The developer is making changes to the app to fix issues with other brands/models...
The current version works well on mine and I don't want it to update to a version which might break it for my brand/model...
In the playstore I disabled auto-update, but it still shows up in the manual and group update list...
I went into titanium (pro) and detached it from the market and it showed 'attach to market (forced)'
I checked playstore and it is off my app list...
Several minutes later it re-appeared in playstore and titanium went back to 'detach from market'
So the detach function is not sticking...
Any Ideas?

Its been an issue with Titaniium before and appears as it does on your device. Try this:
1) get the Apk you wanna detach (ex using TitaniumBackup) into location you can easily get to (ex. SD card)
2) install ZipSigner from play store
3) re-sign the extracted Apk using ZipSigner and test key
4) uninstall the original app and install the re-signed Apk you made
5) profit
Hi, I realise this is an old post but it's something I've been trying to do for a while too. I've finally accomplished it successfully so I thought I'd share it on in some of the topics.
It works by changing the apk signature so the app typically becomes 'different' to the one on the Google Play Store and therefore doesn't appear in your Google Play Store list. But by doing this, you won't be able to update the app from Play Store.
How to:
Need Root.
First do a TB backup of current apk just to keep it.
With a file explorer, go to root\data\app and copy the app apk that you want to change and paste it somewhere on SD card.
Now uninstall the app
Download and install: ZipSigner by Ken Ellinwood from Play Store.
Open ZipSigner, choose input file and navigate to earlier copied apk
I used key/mode: auto-testkey
Sign the file
The new signed apk will be put in the same directory the original file was.
Now install that signed apk and your're done. Check market.
Worked for me - hope it works for you!

HY,I have android l and the latest chrome apk downloaded from play store. In earlier versions i could find the settings menu in the right corner of the screen, now its gone,I cant even share a web page...Never had this problem before, did I miss something ?
Sometimes it happened during updating app but don't worry just make a backup of this app you may use es explorer for backup app. Remove the app from phone and install the app again by simply opened recent back file which done by you before uninstall
Hi, since the Oreo update I can't find the "Unknown sources" to install APK's freely. I'ts not under "Lock Screen and Security", and I have enabled Chrome in "Applications/Special Access/Install other apps" and I'm trying to install apps from the "Downloads" section of chrome, but it dosn't work this way either.
I was trying to install the Pixel Launcher as seen from here: https://theunlockr.com/2018/03/13/make-samsung-galaxy-s9-look-like-stock-android/
But everytime I try it I get the "<!> Application not installed".
I don't know exactly what says in english, I'm using my phone in spanish.
Any ideas? Thanks!
If you go to Settings-Apps-3 Dots-Special Access-Install Unknown Apps.
They've moved it so only certain apps can install unknown apps
Please help how to fix this problem. This doesn't work, I tried installing Accuweather pro several times. I have the app saved to my Google Drive, I click on the app and I see something called 'Staging App' and then I get this alert ' There was a problem parsing the package'. I currently had an older version of Accuweather pro installed and working fine. I decided to remove the old version and then reinstall it and I received the same alert. FYI the old Accuweather app was installed before the Oreo update.

Have you tried downloading your APP file from Google Drive to your phone then opening the copy on your phone, that should install the .apk
Go to settings on the phone >> apps >> 3 vertical dots at the top right corner >> special access >> install unknown apps >> and there enable the permission from where you are trying to download it.
All thank you,
I found out that you now have to download the app to your phone. Google Drive does not allow you to download and manually install .
Dear sir/madam,
Following your answer, in specific this part, "They've moved it so only certain apps can install unknown apps", perhaps someone could help me out. I use the Firefox Focus browser and this app doesn't show up in the list of apps that are allowed to install unknown apps.
* Does this mean Firefox Focus can't install apps from unknown apps, since it's not on the list?
* And perhaps we can conclude from that it will never be allowed to do so?
* Or would this app not be on this list, because I've never tried installing anything using this browser?
I guess the real question would be, what populates this list?
I hope to hear from you, thanks in advance, all the best.
Form what I've seen, 1st time you try to install apk from an app it asks you if you want to allow it?

That's what I was thinking as well, funny thing is that 'Google Chrome' is in the list and I've never used that browser. Unless it's there, because it's from Google
I have followed the above suggestions and have allowed Chrome to install apps since that's the browser I'm using. The phone says I have downloaded the app but it is not giving me any option to install it? Where did the download go and how can I get it actually installed? This is an app for work.
Edit: Nevermind - I restarted the phone and tried again and it worked. thanks.
After I update my phone Android 10 (non-root), I am unable sideload apk installation. When I tabbed to install the apk files, it kept saying saying, "Sorry, no application available." I had tried forced stop, clear cache, clear data on Package Installer and restart. It didn't fix the problem.
Anyone know how to fix this, please?
I had the same problem for awhile, I just made sure Brave (browser) could install 'from unknown sources' and redownloaded and it worked.
I just found out now that the culprit could be the ES Pro file explorer app. I can install apk files through Asus's file explorer.

I recommend to switch to a different explorer. There has been some news about 1 year ago that ES was bought by some company and weird code was injected in this formerly great app.
I switched to x-plore now.
Thanks. I'll do it right away.

Or get a copy of VER. 4.0.2.2. Search for it. From what I understand this was the last version before it was sold. Works great for me.
