So for a bit I've been looking into tablets, and the G Tablet seems like its the right one for me (great hardware, already a great amount of work from the Devs here on the system) so I think I'll be picking one up after the holidays.
My question though: I remember reading a week or two ago (when doing my initial research) reading somewhere that the G Tablet could run Windows 7 in the future. Is this true? I originally strayed away from Win 7 tablets because I know how much of a hassle they can be, and after putting Android onto my HTC Vogue I went towards a droid tablet. But I also realised that if I could get a Win 7 boot on the tablet also (like one of the other tablets out there with a dual boot) then that would be great to possibly run some of my graphic programs.
So, does anyone think/know if setting up a dual boot on the G Tablet is possible? Has anyone started thinking about developement on it already?
Thanks in advance! Looking forward to getting this tablet and getting it setup, and just wanting to get to know a little more about its future too.
Viewsonic is suppose to be coming out with a DIFFERENT tablet that can dual boot, but not the Gtab..
The Viewpad 10 is what they were coming out with. Don't know if it still is. The big issue for me is there is only Android 1.6 right now for the X86 cpu's. You also have to deal with fans, and the extra weight. I wanted a Windows 7 tablet but not so much anymore.

Yeah I know about that one, but strayed away from that because it was pretty much unavailable and more pricey (if memory serves).
I swear I remember reading it somewhere that the G Tablet would be capable of running Windows 7 in the near(ish) future, and I'm just trying to figure out if that is true or not.
Only if Microsoft rewrites Win 7 for the ARM processor and reduces the Bloat.
:-D I am sure at some point with all these Tegra 2 tablets someone will port Ubuntu onto the G-tab! This would be amazing considering all the tablet support that they have built into the recent netbook remix.

Once we have kernel source, we'll be able to do it....
Ubuntu is a definite possibility since it runs on ARM and the Android kernel itself is Linux based. But, just like any kernel change, the devs would need the source so that's the biggest obstacle.
Hi people,
This is my first post.
I am looking to purchase a 7" - 8" android tablet for my wife.
I was told that the people in xda - developers know the most about the android so that i why I am posting this question.
I plan on using it for a ereader... but would use it for games, video, etc...
I am not an apple fan, and want the android. I download alot of stuff and thought an android could handle any format I shoot at it, like pdf, txt, etc...
What's your advice? AND THANKS!!!
p.s.
even if you point me to another thread that discusses the best android to buy, that would be great.
Get a Barnes and Noble Nook color e-reader.
Root it and you can transforms it into an affordable Android tablet

Thanks... THAT'S what I'm talking about. Really don't want to shell out to much $$$$
and I am a BIG pc downloader... use mostly IRC.
I will start to research this idea. Is there a thread dedicated to this?
Thanks again.

So I looked into it. It is cool. BUT IT'S $249!!! and for $299 you can get the ...
eLocity A7 Touchscreen 7-Inch Android 2.2 Tablet , hast HDMI, USB, nvideo GPU, dual processor.
Am I missing something?
No your not missing anything the nook color is a dedicated e reader that is meant for the average to low level using how only WA TS to read books......for you I would go and get a better suited tablet with more options and functions nook is the best dedicated. Ereader out but not even close in being a top android tablet
Sent from my LG-P509 using XDA App
The nook. Got a recovery
S.I. 77
Now this may be expensive, but I recommend the Samsung Galaxy Tab...I mean it lets you surf the net, games, android market, etc.
...But thats just me.
If you want an e-reader, get the Nook Color, if you want a tablet, wait for Honeycomb.

I think I will wait for the honeycomb! Thanks...
I just started doing research. Don't understand the android market place? I would just search for cracked software to install... am I missing something?
It would be used primary as an ereader, she now has the itouch... but it is a little to small. But it will also be used for movies (on plans), reading PDF's, and all other formats. And I will use it for games...lol.
She has dozens of apps on her itouch... I am sure she will download all kinds of stuff for the android.
advice on android tablet
Hi!
For me,
the best tablets on the market are :
- Viewsonic viewpad gtablet 10.1" (android 2.2, capacitive multitouch, 1GHz CPU,512Mo RAM, USB, 16GB,Camera, G-sensor, supports :wav,wma,mp3...;avi,divx,xvid,wmv,rmvb,mkv,mp2,x264,x263; epub,pdf,...)
At OfficeDepot: $379.99
-Samsung GAlaxy Tab(Android 2.2, capacitive multitouch, 1GHz, 512 RAM, front camera, rear camera,G-Sensor, supports all the formats above).Price varies depending on the Carrier($400 to @560).
But , If you really want a very good tablet you might as well wait 6months to the newer versions with android 3.0 honeycomb(OS specially designed for tablets).
Good luck on your new tablet!
The Notion Ink Adam is another device which I think is extremely good - it uses a Pixel QI screen which makes it especially good as an E-Reader. Also it uses a specialised version of Android which makes Android amazing on it. However it is a bit expensive at $550.
I have been very happy with my Archos 70. It comes with a nice eReader and with the Google Market installed, I have the Amazon Kindle app. It is a little hard to find right now, $275 is the retail, which is what I waited for and got direct from Amazon. Although my wife picks it up to read and ends up playing Angry Birds...
I was under the impression Archos had their own market software and thus it made a bit of problems getting the real Market on it. I don´t own one though so I might be mistaken. As for Adam (Notion Ink´s device) yea theres reviews and such but IIRC Notion Ink has pushed Adam back, the pre-oder people aren´t getting their devices because Notion Ink can´t handle the demand or something it´s pushed back for one reason or another (from androidtablets.net) Android 3.0 aka Honeycomb is Android (re)designed for Tablets. My advice wait for the release of Android 3.0 and the explosion of new devices that are sure to follow in it´s wake. This, my guess is, will bring competition and make for a large selection and maybe price wars which is always good for the end users
Nook Color. End of lol.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
....apad...epad...lol hope that's more helpful. There's a variety of specs and sizes.
I've recently purchased the Amazon Kindle and it has completely replaced books for me. The e-ink technology doesn't bother your eyes so you can use the device for what its for.
Honeycomb in Eken
I have heard (and read) that Honeycomb is already released.
My questions:
1. How can I have it?
2. How to install it in a Eken tablet?
Thanks for help.

How about Apad , Irobot?

Hello!
I want to buy a tablet for use in school instead of my notebook.
I really love Android Honeycomb but I have some problems here and there...
I will tell you something about what i need and want. I hope some of you can make some good suggestions.
I looked around a bit and three devices were generally suitable... The problem is I don'T know what to take... Win or Android...
The three devices:
-Acer Iconia A500 (or A501)
-Acer Iconia W500 (or W501)
-Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101
Perfect fo me would be to have a dual-booting tablet with Win7 and Honeycomb.
I want to have an easy to handle Tablet. Means I do never want to have a real HArd Disk. Thats why most Windows Tablets are not possible for me.
SSD or Flash / NAND storage is an important criteria.
Next I want my pad to be lightweight meaning I preferr ARM-Platforms as they have much less Hardware. Especially the Fan in x86-HW is annoying in my eyes.
But I need the Tablet for basicly five things:
-Presentations: Animated Presentations like in PowerPoint (That's a Contra Android I think)
-Text (Word or similar - Okay Eee Pad has an office solution)
-Table Calculation (low weight not so important)
-Software engineering (Which is a big Pro for Windows as I don't know apps for Android doing that.
-Gaming: Playing Minigames whan I'm off... Well thats a point where I like Android
And some point for me is the battery time... Unformtunately x86-Hardware is much power consuming in opptsite to ARM.
I'd love to have a device which is able to boot both systems but unfortunately honeycomb is not ported to x86 yet
Well I have a windows server so I could probably use terminal sessions for programming as a workaround
What do you think?
Or would you suggest me another Tablet else than the ones listed above?
Do you believe it will be possible to install Windows 8 onto Eee Pad Transformer?
Probably even DualBoot?
For school purposes, I think a Windows tablet would be your best bet. You just can't get all of the widely used/ popular business features in Android. Plus you don't wanna get distracted during class
I would have to Say Windows if it for school, but then again look into Android with Word power, or use of School related Apps, for which Android I think is perfect because of the use of many many different Apps to help with whatever situation you're in.
I would think Android would be a much better tablet experience than Windows.
Excluding the possibility of Windows 8.
I would like to point out Bluestacks
http://www.bluestacks.com/
Wait a few months, and a dual-booting tablet will be possible
In the meantime, have you used windows 7 with a touchscreen? IMHO, it kinda sucks.
hahah ,very thanks
Well Windows 7 on touchscreen is possible and it is quite usable. I tried one out (Ambiance AT-something)
But I really love Android as I already stated. And it is better in tiouchscreen-use of course.
The school I mean is not a regular school but it is a school wehre you go if you learn a job (don't know the english word for it). I'm learning an IT-Specialist Job so thats not any problem
The question is while looking on each parameter what would be the best choice for me?
None is suitable 100% I guess this will end up in a 45-55 percent decision...
As I you said generally Windows has much more "known" capabilities e.g. MS Office but on the other hand android is much better while talkting from tablets... It is more efficient light-weight (focussing on hardware specs) and when I focus on travelluign I would like to have android as it has more battery lifetime and at the same time the games are better (You have to remember that most windows games are too hardware-hungry to run on a tablet and if they do you have battery times around two hours? )
For my purposes the polaris office Word equivalent is enough.
The presentation thing is okay for small presentations. for bigger ones I'd have to use windows or wait until some software comes out (which will happen I think)
I did not try table caluclation on polaris office yet...
A big plus-point for windows is programming... IS there any software out for android which supports that? I don't think so.
But therefore I could use my server as I already said.
A big plus for android is portabliity and the in my oppinion better games for entertaiment.
Besides the Transformers Screen is awsome in comparison to the Acer...
The transformer does have a nice screen. It's a quite capable tablet, I liked the hardware much more than the Acer. Honeycomb just isnt quite there yet. If It has to work and be easy, go Windows. If it has to be fun go Android
I wouldn't buy any android tablet at the present date, especially if i don't wanna use it mainly as a toy...android is not mature yet, it still has a lot of glitches to be ironed out, on a tablet they can become even more annoying.
It'S exactly what my problem is^^ I want fun but also be able to do my work.
But I don't mind having it a bit more complicated then.
I would instantly say I take a windows thing and use android-x86 ginger as dualboot... But I dislike the x86-Arch-Hardware in a Tablet.
Tablet android 100%
There is already a tablet with dual booting os i.e. android n windows....

Friend I am really sceptic when I see a Dual-Booting Tablet, looking like an ipad coming from Hong Kong and haveing Win7 ULTIMATE on it.
Next there is another doing this from Viewsonic. But installing Android 2.2 or 2.3 on an x86 platform is not the problem...
Honeycomb is not possible unfortunately - YET I know TegaTech is workign on it and it is running. Just google not permitting the release yet.

Can you describe why?
Going off what you've said you need it for, and that you don't mind how W7 works on a tablet, I'd say go that route, and install bluestacks when it comes out to get your android games.
Coding inside android is not something I've ever heard about, I know you mentioned it, but I don't know how important it is to you.
If battery life is really important, however, I'd recommended the Asus transformer - massive battery life with the dock, and works great as a netbook or a tablet. Dunno how Google docs or similar works on it as an office suite, but its definitely an option.
Thanks mtmerrick
Your post is exactly what I think.
Win7 is good in software and Transformer in Hardware...
If Transformer 2 was out now I would have bought it... Do you think if I buy TF now I will be able to install WIndows 8 on it when it comes out?
I don't know if it's even possible to install anything there?
//Edit: The Programming part is not important for me. But for School. As said I'd use Terminal Sessions for this purpose when thats the only death criteria for android.
Thank my posts if they helped.
There's been talk of putting windows 8 on android devices already, but its too soon to say if it'll actually be possible. I also want to add, Windows 8 ARM apps are most likely not going to be compatible with windows 8 x86 and x64 programs, if that makes a difference to you.
Android has several office suites avalible, and they're pretty good. I'm not exactly sure how strong they are but I do know they're more then enough for most of my entire office. Add the Transformer's hardware keyboard and you should be good to go.
So, I've effectively talked myself into the Asus Eee Pad Transformer for you. What do you think?
I am sure Windows 8 ARM will support MSOffice and Visual C# Express As wella s there will be a notepad++ compile for ARM so that's really all I need lol
Well Microsoft has already said there'll he a version of Office avalible for ARM, so no need to worry about that. But, as I said, android office apps should be all you need, expically with that hardware keyboard. And the transformer has an HDMI out, if I remember correctly, so that (probably) means dual monitor support, and definitely mirroring. Thing is, most people just don't NEED the full capabilities of windows. Only reasons for my laptop are AutoCAD and iTunes. And if windows 8 ARM is going to require its own programs, honestly, why bother with it?
I agree with you.
Define "need"
I saw ubuntu is able to run on the transformer... That opens a new way =)
Which includes even most programming problems
Does anyone know if I can dualboot Android and Ubuntu on the Transformer?
If yes I know what I will buy
android of cos....
And I'm honestly thinking about getting the Grid10. The Grid10 + case + USB cable is still $20 less than the Transformer (without a case, or the dock), which was the other tablet I'm considering.
Is there any reason I shouldn't get the Grid10? Better price point for similar specs. It can sideload Android APKs, and it uses the Amazon App Store, and the OS is something that really seems to flow nicely in all the hands on videos I've seen.
Since it's based on the Android kernel, it won't be another Playbook or Touchpad, since all Android apps theoretically work on the Grid10. The only thing I'm worried about is all the negative comments I've been reading about Fusion Garage and their previous tablet. I already know I'd enjoy an Android tablet.
I am currently the owner of an original Galaxy Tab, so really, anything is an upgrade at this point (Not having a tablet OS on a tablet is really awful)
This will be my next tablet, I have been watching the Grid10 for a while now. It looks smooth and responsive to the touch. I currently own the touchpad and an Android tablet. I am planning on getting the 3g version. Fast enough for me.
On the @FusionGarage twitter, I asked a few qustions that I've been unable to find answers to:
"@FusionGarage Quick question, is the usb cable a must? Can you sync/transfer files via wifi? "
Reply: "@steckums We are currently working on an application that will sync your content via WiFi, but right now you need the USB cable. "
"@FusionGarage Good to hear. One more: how compatible is it with Android APKs? Is it essentially able to sideload any (honeycomb!?) app?"
Reply: "@steckums Yes, you can sideload any Android app, including Honeycomb apps."
Off Topic

i am planning to buy by the end of the month and i want it flashed with better firmware.
please someone help me
So I have heard that GridOS is based on android 2.3. If that is the case how are they running any honeycomb apps? My guess is that older versions of GridOS (pre-production) were based on 2.3 and the production version is based on honeycomb. What are other people's thoughts on this?
I bought the wifi only version - it should arrive tomorrow. I've just read a less than stunning review from Engadget though, so now I'm leery...
Good day guys!
I've always used a laptop as my main PC, mainly because I can bring it to university, now I would like to build a desktop and would like to use a tablet to connect remotely to my new desktop and type any notes of documents directly on my PC.
As I would be taking notes/writing documents, it would be necessary to have a keyboard dock, I'm not too sure how the thing with docks work, if only some tablets can have them or if there are universal docks.
Additionally, it would be great if the tablet could play Full HD, or 720p at the very least
Price limit could be up to $500.
Thank you very much for your help everyone!
P.S.: One more thing, separately from the hardware, what is the best app available to do remote connection?

$500 + tax? lol well here we go, You didn't ask for screen size so I'll give some 7 in ones too.
All tablets have an HD resolution, but the only one that has Full HD is the Prime Infinity. To be honest each one has a great screen. Some tablets come with a dock that's is meant for them (Asus Transformer Prime and Galaxy Note 10.1) but each tablet also can be paired with a Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse if you want. Also you can use a USB input dongle with the Note and Prime so that you can use a regular keyboard too (kind silly though =D).

For me it works pretty much with lag doing light task. So typing and make notes should be a breeze. However, you may experience lag if you are trying to watch a movie on it. I got lag when I tried it out, but I think it is because the GPU on my device (Galaxy Player 4.0) is not powerful enough. These device either have Mali-MP 400, Tegra 3 or Tegra 2 which are far superior. So I hope this helps you, and if you want I try and post reviews of each device.
Wow! Thanks a lot! I wasn't expecting such a detailed response!
From the suggestions you gave me I had been looking at the first three, the other two look really good too! I had been leaning mostly towards the Asus, although the Note also looks tempting, I'll have to do some thinking.
I've also had the galaxy tab on my watch, but it looks like the Asus is better.
Thank you!

Lol yeah. But it isn't like super customized. I just use Go Launcher EX, and tweaked some of the objects using their theme maker. It took a while to find the images though, and I had to photoshop many of them, but it came out well.

You can get a Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 refurbished on Amazon for $340. This is what i use, it has amazing battery life and a very clear screen! If you remote connect to your desktop it will waste a bunch of battery, but what you can do is type your notes on your tablet and sync them with Dropbox so they will automatically be shared with your desktop. Dropbox is AMAZING! I highly recommend it if you haven't checked it out!
