DC car charger can't overcome GPS battery drain - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just used the Nexus 5 for about a 90 mile drive and I've confirmed the problem that I have suspected from my much shorter daily commute. When using the phone as a GPS, I cannot find a single car charger so far that will overcome the battery drain. I have tried four chargers so far, all of which worked successfully with my Note 2. When using those same chargers with the Nexus 5 I'm losing 1 to 2 percent every 15 minutes. The only solution that has worked for me was to buy an inverter and do an AC charge of the phone. In that case, my battery charged to 100% percent while using the GPS without an issue. This is going to be a real problem.

Charging

How long does it typically take to fully charge your phone from about 30% or so? I have noticed that it takes really long to charge, I have had mine on charge for 4 or 5 hours and its only at 88%.
Usually about 3 hours here.

Same, I would say about 3 hours.
I'm going to let it run down and time it. Something is definitely not right. If I put it charging when I go to bed it is not fully charged by the time I wake up.
Thread moved to Q&A.
Well the default charger is 0.15A right ?
I am using my Galaxy Tab's charger which is 2A and i get a full charge in like 1 hour.
The charger that came with it is a .7A I am using a 1A though.
I think I might have found the problem. The app "craigsphone" installed a service that was using 79% cpu. I tried killing it and it would come back. So I uninstalled it, now just have to test out to see if it charges faster.
I bought my phone on it's release day, and up until about a week or two ago, it's taken a VERY long time to charge up -literally all night long. But for some reason, it seems to have started charging faster here recently. It now only takes about 3 hours to charge up, from being near completely dead. I don't understand why this has apparently happened, but I'm not complaining lol.
-of course, I'm speaking of charging via the included wall charger. USB charging still takes all night for me
ikarma,
it depends on your charger.
I have 2 chargers:
- Original from HTC Desire
- Unknown brand
Both produce output 1000 mA (1A).
The time to charge from 4% to 100%:
- HTC charger = 4 hours
- Unknown brand = 6 hours
Here what I have done to this finding:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=917075
So again, it depends on your charger!
Probably my unknown brand does not really produce 1000 mA.
Bottom line, there are different quality chargers out there! Choose wisely

Let me know where to buy such charger?
My default charger needs 4h15Min

Discharging while using Navigation

Hey Guys,
So I was recently on a trip this weekend and was using Navigation on my Nexus 5 for a 4 hour drive. I had noticed though after a short while that while I had my Nexus 5 plugged into a charger it was still continuing to drain battery.
With my Galaxy Nexus in the past I was able to run Navigation / Music / Etc.. all whilst still charging so it came as a disappointment when I saw this.
I made sure that I was charging on (AC) mode and it still continued to fall, albeit a little slower than (USB) mode though. When I went to the battery usage navigation had taken up about 59% of the battery drain, I was surprised because I though it would have been the screen but that was only like 14% of the battery drain.
Anyone else run into this issue?
Check the Amp output on the charger. Anything less than 1A will not charge the phone while in use.
I had the exact opposite issue with my G-Nex, the "rapid" charger I was using only output 550mAh as opposed to the 1A that is required to charge while in use. I don't believe it is an issue with the phone, it's probably just the charger. $10 to $20 will get you a nice, reliable one with the proper output, and possibly an additional USB port.
Hopefully this helps
Don't buy cheap car chargers, just not enough power. I use a Verizon car charger that has an extra USB port for charging another device and it charges while the device is in use.
Thanks for the input guys, unfortunately the charger was 1 amp that I was using. I do have another car charger that I use and none of them are the cheap USB ones. I guess I'll have to do some more testing with the other car charger that I have.
I was just mainly concerned, not if there was something wrong with the phone, but with the fact that even when charging in AC it wouldn't keep up with navigation's wear on the battery usage.
Thought I would update to confirm that my Galaxy Nexus car dock charger charged it extremely well after testing while navigating.
Definitely was the other one I was using.
When you switched chargers did you happen to also use a different cable? I couldn't get any of three different chargers that I tried to keep up with the GPS battery drain. Then I realized I was using the same cable with all 3 chargers. The problem was that the cable kept the phone in DC charging mode at nothing more than 0.5 amps. I bought this fast charging cable on Amazon and now I actually gain battery percentage even while using my GPS full time.

I had exactly the same thing with my old phone and discovered it was the cable not letting more than 380 ma pass through it.
There are apps like this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ccc71.bmw that let you monitor mah in and out etc so you can test out different leads and chargers

Original charger failing?!

Ok, so I have my Nexus 5 for about 8 months, but the charger that came with it doesn't work properly anymore.
Just after I got it, and few months later, the charger worked pretty well, and I also have a small amp meter that is connected into charger's usb port to measure Volts, amps and mAh, and when new, it pushed about 1.7 amps of current (it is rated to 1.8), and charged the phone in about hour and a half from 5% to 100%. Right now, the charger gives only 0.4-0.5 ams of current and charging time varies from 3 to 3.5 hours!
Has anyone experienced this problem?
Is an LG G2 (2.2amp) or G3 charger safe to use, as I tried G2 before and it charged the battery in less than an hour, without heating the device.
Also, I frequently leave my charger plugged in wall socket all day long, and it's plugged in without using more than it is plugged out (just when carrying it somewhere). Maybe that's why it degraded over time...

my galaxy s6 charger does not charge any other phone

The adaptive fast charger that came with my phone works well with my galaxy s6. Fast charging works well and I can get up to 50% charge in about 25 mins. But the problem is it doesn't charge any other phone apart from galaxy s6. If I plug my htc one or lg g3 or any other phone (even blackberry), it will indicate its charging but won't add any juice. I've tried charging other phones for up to 30 mins, rather than charging the battery % will either stay where it is or sometimes drain. It can't even charge simple things like a modem or even a ps4 controller. I once plugged a ps4 controller and the charging light indicated, but to my surprise after 1 hour of charging it still was not able to add one bar to the battery. In fact if I plug a phone with 2% battery , after 20 mins of charging the phone dies.
I want to know if anyone else have this problem and possible solution, or was this charger designed like this?
Same here. Doesn't charge my Nexus 5. Not a big deal for me though, as I have other chargers.
But sorry, no solution
Noticed it too long ago.
But using other cord with the s6 adapter charger works, atleast in my experience.
I haven't noticed this. I use the same charger and cable to charge my Nexus 5 and my ecig. No issues.

Charging very very slowly

Hello,
I have had this tabled for a while and it was always charging extremely slowly but I never took it out of the house so it wasn't a bid deal for me. However I have given it to my mother and she uses it in other ways. Anyways, the note 10.1 is the slowest charging device I have ever seen. It takes probably 48h-72h to charge it completely. I am using the original cable and power brick, I have tried ALL the outlets in my house, I have tried using the computer, I have tried using another cable (probably like 5 different ones) and other bricks (from iPads, my note 5, etc) and nothing is working. I have seen other posts regarding slow charging but none of them solve my problem.
Thank you
Thats is not normal .
I would factory reset and flash a stock rom .
Swap battery or take to a service centre .

"probably"?
You can't troubleshoot perceptions and guesses. How long does it actually take--repeatably--to charge from what percentage to what percentage? (i.e. "Went to bed, battery was at 40%, charged overnight for 7 hours and battery was at 60%.")
There are apps to check charging current (Ampere being one of them).
The fastest charge you can get is with the OEM charger in an outlet, not a PC.
Understand that this is a 7,000mAh battery without any quick charging applied to it.
Additionally, if you are using the device whilst charging it, you aren't really charging it since the drain is about the same as the charge; you'll effectively neither charge nor discharge.
Finally, check for battery-draining apps; you might not have a charging problem but an app-drain problem.

The time varies, but it is between 2 and 3 days to charge from 0, never less.
I do use the OEM charger and cable and an outlet.
I do understand that but 2 days seems a bit of a stretch, don't you think?
I am definitely not using it while charging, because it's impossible. It just doesn't charge fast enough to be able to use it. It drains quicker than it charges.
I highly doubt that, I only have YouTube and Chrome installed on it.
Above 6 hours with stock rom and charger is abnormal .
Usual replies .
One cable
Two charger
Three battery or connections .
Four USB port
Five motherboard .

Yeah, 2 days isn't right. It also shouldn't be discharging faster than charging, especially with the OEM charger.
I leave mine plugged into my PC (only 500mA max current) with the screen on (about medium brightness, mostly black screen, which is most power-friendly for OLED) using LectureNotes all day and it will neither charge nor discharge (technically, it's charging at the same rate it is discharging); the percentage doesn't move.
What does Ampere report?
Do you have another charger you could try? any 5V and at least 2A would work.
Also, ensure your cable isn't intermittently open (a break in the cable, temporarily disconnecting the charger).
If the cable and charger are good, then the battery would be the next likely culprit, followed by the charging circuit.
Finally, ensure heat isn't an issue (is it in a case? remove it).
Mine was messed up but I concluded it was the port and cable. I got a new cable and then replaced the charging port and viola. Charge time went from 8 hours back to the usual 3-4
