Best apps for noobs

Hi all, I'm new to this forum. A friend just got his first android phone (hero) & asked me what apps he should download first. I gave my suggestions. It just made me want to ask what you guys suggest to noobs who aren't superusers. My first suggestion was barcode scanner. Others?

I assume they don't ship yet with 2.1 - that you have to update that still?
If so, make sure he roots it and finds a better rom than the Sprint one.
I haven't kept up the last month or so, but I'm not sure if you can root the Hero once you update to 2.1

If there's an official 2.1 rom why would you bother rooting it at all?

You root it for not use the official 2.1, but using a custom-rom, and having more benefits.
But the point of the thread is "what apps". Well, below is my list. The base of any Android that i use (used).
- Task Manager: ES Task Manager, Advanced Task Manager (has uninstaller included).
- Some toggles for switching between 2g and 3g and for turning data off.
- IM apps, like Nimbuzz or ebuddy, if he uses such things of course.
- A Notes app, best i've tried is "Notes" from Yuli.
- A file manager: Linda or Astro, but Linda is faster.
- SysTray Monitor, for monitoring battery level or ram amount etc.
- Audio Manager, a simple widget to monitor system sounds intensity.

I still haven't figured out the point of an Uninstaller. You can uninstall via Applications, via the Market, or via most launchers by dragging to the trashcan....

[Q] Bloat freezing

Hi guys. I'd like to ask you for some suggestions regarding removing bloat from the Note.
Which apps are most useless, resource consuming and at the same time safe to get rid of?
My intention is to freeze the crap out of my phone to make it snappier.
Any opinions appreciated

Here's a great list of preinstalled apps and what they do. It was made for the GSII, but most of it is still applicable to the Note.

No, you need root to freeze apps.
I totally get where you're coming from, but I'm sure we've got many months ahead of us before Samsung releases ICS. Just think of it as a little bit of effort for long term performance benefits.

I freezed the features/app with titanium..not uninstall yet..cos maybe in future i need to use..i dun know

I took out the usual suspects i removed from all my previous galaxy devices using root explorer and placing them into a folder on sd card incase of any issue, took out about 20 or so last night with no provlems and will hunt down the oddly named APKs that are in the system folder that i wont need and which however did not appear in the apps draw (non system related apps)
For example, Zinio was preinstalled on my device in System/Apps however was not present at all in the apps lists.

Fair enough, I like having a clean app drawer so I delete everything lol i deleted probably 50+ things last night (apps, widgets, etc)

sick of adverts

im getting sick of adverts now, can never tell which applications have versions you have to buy because they name it differently. they advert i got had a red ball with white star around it! I was running 'no screen off!'
seriously cant stand these adverts anymore,
best thing would be a way to tell which application i have installed or running are giving me adverts or,,,just an app to remoe adverts completely

I recommend an app called "Rom Toolbox" it has everything, Ad Blocker is built in alongside hundreds of other Root features (It replaces tons of apps). But If you just want to block ads, use "Ad Free" from the market.

Never heared of "Rom Toolbox" before. Are you using the pro version? I see overclocking listed as a feature. I suppose I need a particular kernel for that, right? Does it fully replace Root Explorer? And what about Titanium Backup?

I set my startup apps to minimum and it starts blazing fast now. I didn't realize how many freaking thing they have set at start. This is great since system tuner fc's on me

Yeah it replaces both, you do need a kernel that allows for overclocking. Make sure Usb Debugging is checked to prevent any problems uninstalling system apps. I do use the Pro version, It adds a few features and I like supporting good developers

If you're phone is rooted you can try AdFree: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...DEsImNvbS5iaWd0aW5jYW4uYW5kcm9pZC5hZGZyZWUiXQ..
This is by far the most effective adblocking app.

I use AdAway from the Play Store, does the job for me. Any ad blocker will do though, as long as you're rooted.
Also, if the app doesn't require the Internet then you can turn the data connection off when using it. I used to do that with Angry Birds before I rooted my phone.

use adaway.. it's simple and very user friendly.. Ads also annoy me, we share the same prob.. so glad if it could help you out..

Are these apps for free? I want to remove the annoying ads as well.

The ads are there to support developer.
If you really want to remove them, the easiest way is to use your phone offline whenever you are using the add supported app

well, both apps require a rooted device. my tablet is not rooted yet, and I haven't even think of rooting it

yes, I know those ads are there to support the developers.
but, if I use my tablet offline, there's not much that I can do with it since a lot of apps require data plan to run

Use a firewall (e.g. Droidwall), set filtering to "whitelist" and only allow those applications that really must have internet access. That will not only block ads but also prevent apps from phoning home other sensitive data. Of course, you need a rooted device for this.

Hmm, it looks like the ad removing apps are gone from the play store (which I guess I understand from googles point of view - they probably get a few pennies for these ads also).. Is there another place to get these? Amazon app store has "ad-blocker pro", but the 3 reviews all say it doesn't work..
Is there non-store place for some of these.. We can load a rom yet with ads removed for the LG Motion 4G, but removing the ads would be good enough for me

Ah indeed.. Apparently I'm too much of a newbie to allowed to post links, but google "pcmag" and "ad-block" and I guess you'll see the article.. I do see that the apps are available on f-droid (which is an open source apps store that I can't post a link to either - google is usually your friend here)...

You can try to download and use Lucky Patcher, very usefull app. It can help you.

You can download Adblock plus from their official website because google has pulled these adblocking apps from play store or you can use the lucky patcher if you have a rooted device. Hope it helps!

For AdAway, check F-Droid. AdFree can be found at the Adfree Android Homepage.
As both work using a modified /etc/hosts file, one could also manipulate that manually. But that would be quite a hazzle :silly:
I remember there was one app that worked by disabling the ad modules themselves -- which would be much more interesting to me. I just cannot figure out which app that was. Any hints?

Also alot of other good suggestions here. Adaway jusy bugs the **** out of my phone though (Desire HD JTime R8).

If you just want a file host http://adf*ly/703YZ just copy and save as on notepad with name host. Then copy to your sdcard and copy again to /system/etc

The root function for antitheft of avast (free) and cerberus (paid) i think are worth mentioning. They are wipe surviving antitheft apps that can remotely control several aspects of the phone through internet or sms.
Also, if on gingerbread, droidwall and pdroid are the paranoid's best friends (pdroid if successfully gone through the hassle of patching). Together give almost full control of permissions for apps, specially those with access to private data.
Edit: i think this list can be good, but maybe add a short description of what you use the apps for, and what advantages they might bring. Also, tasker and set cpu make juice defender irrelevant.

I don't see the point on having a anti virus, cause all the apk's are scanned my Google....and unless u use mms the chances of virus are low...and keeping those apps on drains alot of battery

I agree that anti virus is not essential because APKs are very safe, but I think SD cards and bluetooth data transfers can be quite dangerous...

APKs are not that safe.
Yes they are scanned by google but they are all not "safe"
The popular game Paper Toss was collecting peoples data.
Everyone should be aware that it may not be viruses but taking your information is to me considered not "safe"
You need to read the permissions before installing.
If you download a live wallpaper of the ocean waves it shouldn't have the phone permission to "read phone identity" or "access hardware controls".
I didnt just make this up. The comments of shady apps are flooded with people asking what the permission are needed for.

"PhonemyPc" is a pretty good app to remotely access and use your PC.

DroidCamX for using your phone as a wireless webcam.

Free Apps
"Shush" is a good free app which once you put your phone on silent or vibrate you can set the time when you want it the normal sound settings to come back on, ideal for use at work or meetings.
"Anydo" is a great note app & is super stylish, which comes in black or white & ics blue, one of the best note apps on the market.
"Quickpic" a great gallery app which is a brilliant alternative to the stock gallery, also themed in black or white & a great layout.
"Zipsigner" is a apk signing app, you can modify your zip app files & then sign it using this app, then install & enjoy your Modded app, really easy to use too.
"Ringdroid" a ringtone maker app, use this to cut your own music tracks up & turn it in to your own custom ringtones or message alerts.
Loads more to mention really but this is a good start :0)

yea i dont know about android tuner but GMD i have on my phone and is pretty nice! ill surely update in next post!

I know tasker is a wicked app but I've never got the hang of it? Dunno how to work it properly? I may give it a second try? Anyone got ant tips to using it

I definitely recommend Cerberus as mentioned before.
I'll also suggest Solid Explorer as it's smoother than the file explorers you mentioned and has a great UI.
