default sms app - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know in settings you can pick the default sms app as something other than hangouts but there is no option to use google voice as the default. Does anyone know how to use just google voice?

Or to show your Google Voice number as the SMS source, if we have to use another SMS app. I don't want people to use my carrier phone number. Or to even see it.
I've been texting my sister and she asked when I got a new phone number! Argh.

[Q] Free Text Message App?

Is there any free SMS app to send/receive (also receive notification when I receive the text message)?
I'm on unlimited data plan but I did not purchase the text plan.
I have KakaoTalk app but I believe this is free for users that also has KakaoTalk.
I know one can send SMS on GMail and receive replies through GMail but I'm not sure if that's a possibility on my NS.
Thank you.
Are you in the US?
Google Voice is perfect for that, and integrates very nicely with the Nexus S. No MMS, but SMS works great.

Yes, I'm in the U.S.
Google Voice supports free send/receive SMS?
I know I could use free SMS on GMail by enabling one of the Labs feature but didn't know I could do this on GVoice.
I've been using GVoice as default voice messages. I don't need to do number porting to use SMS right?
I just need SMS, I don't need MMS, just to do some light text messaging when I don't feel like talking on the phone.

Nope when u make a Google voice account you download the app and u can use that to text.
You can also go on the market and look for a app called textfree. It works really well too

I enabled GVoice on my NS but I'm not sure where I could send SMS message. I looked through all settings but I couldn't find it.

I'm accessing Voice app that was already installed on stock Nexus S and I updated to 2.3.2. I only see Refresh, Labels, Balance, Search, Setting, and Help on menu.
Edit: I suppose it works if I access one of my voice message and go to the menu then, I see Text icon.
But I don't see them on the main menu.

Alternatively, you can use Textfree.. not sure how your Google Voice is messed up. Uninstall and reinstall?
He needs to have a Google voice number first before he can text. Since it sounds like he wasn't familiar with it, he likely has to set up a number first.
Sigh, let's try this again.
Go to http://voice.google.com MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A GOOGLE VOICE ACCOUNT.
In the settings on the website, make sure you have NO TXT forwarding, otherwise obviously you'll be paying each TXT GV forwards to your phone.
Also make sure you set your GOOGLE VOICE NUMBER as the SENDER for TXT, again otherwise if someone replies, it will come to your normal cell phone sms number.
On your Nexus S, go to the Market and download the LATEST VERSION of Google Voice. Install it. Run it. Actually to be safe, go to your settings/appliations and do a CLEAR DATA on Google Voice, to delete your settings/start from scratch.
Launch Google Voice and FOLLOW THE WIZARD.
Now, press Menu and you should see Compose.
the only reason i said that is because it is absolutely possible to use google voice for voicemail service without actually having a google voice number or account. he'd actually need to go in an officially get/request a GV number. without that GV number, the texting options would not be there/work.

[Q] SMS via messaging app shows as Google Voice number

I'm not sure if this is a new google feature or an issue on my end.
I use the native messaging app to send out sms to certain people to display my carrier provided number and the google voice app to send out sms to other people to display my google voice number. i discovered that regardless of using google voice or the native messaging app(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1507720), it was going through as my google voice number (e.g. google voice and/or native messaging app sends sms as google voice number). this is what i originally thought was happening until i discovered that if i send an sms with the native messaging app to another user with google voice installed, it goes through as my google voice number. if i send an sms with the native messaging app to someone without google voice installed, it displays my carrier provided number.
*obviously if i send an sms from the google voice app, it shows up as the google voice number*
i'm not exactly sure how to fix this. i could be completely wrong in the scenario above because i've only tested it with several other friends. i have made no changes to my google voice web settings, nor my google voice app and native messaging app.
any help is greatly appreciated.
i'm on verizon, gs3 android 4.1.1
even with google voice uninstalled and the phone rebooted, sending from the native messaging app sends through as my google voice number
bump
anyone?
Install the Google voice app and in the app settings. Click on send text through app instead of through phone messaging app. This might help

8SMS from the Play Store works.
It will work. But I just don't like the gv app for reading sms because of the way they are grouped. If you like it, great...u won't have to worry about sync issues from gv to a default app.
In GV settings, select to receive SMS "via google voice" instead of the messaging app. And set up notifications with in gv.
In this case I don't think GV will forward messages to the system default app. If it does, you will get double notifications. If that happens turn off all notifications in hangouts and/or sign out maybe.
I've been using Textra as my SMS app.

The developer of the app has to update the app to 4.4 comparability to add that feature. I am using Textra and I really like it.

Yes, apps need to be updated for SMS because Google changed the way how it works. Only one app can receive and send SMS, before any app can.
I just started using textra instead of hangouts because I want quick reply lol

Well make up your mind! Before you said you wanted to use GV as your messaging app. Hence my advice before to pretty much ignore whatever you choose as default SMS app and just send/receive your text from within the GV app (Having selected "receive messages through GV app).
Now you're saying that you are trying to send messages from the default SMS app (hangouts). So what you are really saying is that you want to use a default SMS app (hangouts, or textra) and have the text go out your through your GV number? This is totally possible and what I am doing. Bear with me...
We have to understand the GV is NOT really SMS. It just intercepts SMS messages sent to your GV number and sends them to the GV app. These messages are coming to you phone through data, not the radio. Think of GV app operating in two different modes:
1) GV app can operate independently from your devices SMS (select "Via the GV app). You can send and receive messages from the GV app and they will use your GV number. None of these messages will be "forwarded" to the system app. In this scenario, you can also use the system app separately. Messages sent and received from the system default app wil not appear in the GV app, and will use your REAL phone number.
2) GV app can be used to relay these pseud SMS messages coming across your data to the default system app (select "via the messaging app"). In this case, messages sent to your GV number will appear in the GV app, and then be forwarded to the system app and use it's notification settings. Now this gets a little weird, but when this forwarding happens, the message received in the system app appears to come from an unknown phone number in some random area code. Not sure why... has something to do with the whole forwarding process. Luckily, if the real incomming number is in you contacts, then GV appends the contact name to the message. Now if you reply from within the GV app, it goes right back to the sender (no copy of your reply will appear in the system app, because you replied from within GV). If you reply from the system app, and that pseudo phone number... then it will forward back to the GV app (a copy will be there), translate back to the real phone number and send out the reply. And it will be from your GV number. The key is using that pseudo number that translates to the contacts real number. If YOU initiate a message from within the native app, then it just sends a regular SMS using your phones number, NOT your GV number (incidently, this is the only way to send MMS as of now, so you just have to tell the recepient to use the real phone number for pics). When I first figured this out, I used to just make sure that I always initiated the conversation from the GV app. The last neat trick is to save that pseudo number to the existing contact as either a pager (who uses those?) or a custom "pseudo GV" number. No you can initate the conversation from within the system app, and slect the pseudo number.... it will route to GV and appear to come from your GV number. If you use their real mobile number, it will appear to come from your actual phone number.
Clear as mud? Supposedly there are some changes coming to the way GV works. Lets hope they get this stuff a little more user friendly and allow SMS. Actually, I wouldn't mind just using the GV app if it didn't make multiple threads per contact. Good luck...
no, I want Google voice to be my one and only SMS app. on 4.3 and below, when I initiated a text from anywhere outside a messaging app it asked me what I wanted to use, Google voice or messaging or whatever SMS all I'd have installed. I'd get the use one or set as default dialog, and of i set as default gv would then handle all messaging.
with 4.4, when I initiate a text from outside an app it automatically goes through hangouts, and I cannot choose google voice as a default. if I want to send a text via gv, now I have to initiate it via gv. in the op I said I downloaded chomp and handcent just to see if I got the option to set them as a default, and of the 2 only handcent showed up one list. I think expertzero hit it, and Google just hasn't updated gv for 4.4 yet

Use Google Voice to make & receive phone calls [APRIL 2019]

Update, April 5, 2019: you can now make calls with Google voice.
1. Open the app, tap the phone icon then the dialer on the bottom right.
2. If it doesn't work, go into settings by tapping lines at top left. Make sure you are set to receive calls, disconnect hangouts if you haven't.
3. Make sure you set your preference to use Wi-Fi to make calls.
4. Restart app, go back to step one.
**********************************************************
****OLD METHOD****
I'm making this post because this worked surprisingly well. Call clarity is near perfect and there's little to no delay whatsoever. To be honest, I wasn't expecting this to work well on this tablet let alone any other ones.
Google recently revamped Google Voice and Hangouts which all but combined the two apps into one. If you already have a Google account, you can easily sign up to use Google voice here. To use this feature you'll need to do so. Once you've done so, you're literally a few steps away from receiving and making phone calls. Also install Activity Launcher if you haven't already done so.
1) It's not required, but it is helpful to download and install Google Contacts.
2) Download and install Google Voice (once you've gotten a Voice number). You can now send SMS messages to anyone with a regular phone number and you can also receive texts from any phone number. You can also now setup voicemail which will then allow anyone to call your Voice number and leave you a voice message. In the next steps, you'll be able to answer those phone calls and even make them!
3) Download and install Google Hangouts and Hangouts Dialer. No additional sign-up is needed. You should be automatically signed in when opening Hangouts. In Hangouts tap the three bars at the top left and select settings and tap your account if signed in.
4) Scroll to the Google Voice section and select the option to 'receive incoming phone calls.' Otherwise incoming calls will be directed to the voicemail you just setup in the Voice app. Voice will transcribe the message for you, if able to do so and you can listen to and read them right from the Voice app. In the next option, if you so desire, you can select to receive messages in Hangouts that are sent to your Voice number.
5) Using Activity Launcher, tap top left, all activities, scroll to 'Media Storage' and select the 'Hangouts Call' as your ringtone (It should currently be set to none). If you select the 'default ringtone' no sound will be played so you have to select the Hangouts tone. (If you figure out how to add more ringtones, please post a reply with the steps to do so. I've not gotten that far or even know if you can do so).
6) Now have someone call your new number. You should be able to answer the call on your tablet. Now open hangouts and select the dialer. You can now call any number you want, for free, provided you're on a good WiFi network.
You can setup the apps up to your liking, but you won't be able to get calls through the Voice app anymore. In older versions, Voice had it's own dialer, or used the one built into your phone/device if there was one. In the Voice app you can also decide if you want voicemail messages forwarded to your Gmail.
Note: If you have a working telephone number already, you can link it through Voice. I currently don't have cellular service and haven't for some time so you'll have to figure out that part on your own
This is awesome.

You'll have to look for the thread on how to install Google Play and the services for it. Once you do that, you can install Hangouts and Hangouts dialer. This works on both the fire 7 and HD 8.
When you sign up for a Google voice number, it asks for a real number for verification and to link the account to. Once you setup the Google Voice app, you can delete the linked number.
Thanks for the tips. I am now able to place and receive calls using the Hangouts apps. Call volume is very low even though call volume setting is near max. Would be interested in link to last Google Voice app that did have built in dialer.
Hello, have the 2018 Hd 8. Installed Play, additional 3 Google apks. YouTube working, hijacklauncher 2.1, Google now launcher, Play store working. I installed Hangouts (minus voice because it's Canada). Just trying to use app to app text and call, this hd 8 is my daughter's. She can call me and text me from the Hangouts app but when I call her or text it doesn't notify even if I have her Hangouts open. When I end call it then shows missed on her Fire. Settings in Hangouts are all on for ring and notification. All Hangouts app permissions are granted. I installed on her old Asus tablet and it rings with same settings. Am I missing some steps, is this blocked now from Google on Fire?

Amazon commented out the code in the Settings APK so you can't set a default sms messenger. I still haven't been able to figure that out, but I have somewhat of an idea.
I have similar issue, got to load the play store on fire hd 8 (8th generation), but using hangouts to dial numbers returns an error "unexpected account error please try again". Sms, voicemail, videocalls to hangout contacts works.

Maybe try an older version? I'll have to look at the date of the OP and compare it with the release at the time. Also I'm pretty sure you have to have 1 a Google voice number and 2 link that number to a real working one.

In Hangouts settings, there should be toggles. One for messages one for calls. If there isn't anymore, there may not be, download Google voice go into settings and select the option over there. You may need to have both installed. Also make sure you have hangout dialer. And remember you have to have a working, verifiable telephone number to link to Google voice. This needs to be done only once ever so if you don't pay the bill you can keep the Google number for life so long as the linked number isn't recycled.

Well I tried different versions of hangouts and that didn't seem to make receive calls to work. I also tried various versions of google account manager and google service framework, and just got to have the contacts now available when searching in hangouts. While i was testing, noticed that seems that google services are doing sync during a fixed time, due to i don' t get any notification of past texts until i open the app or reopen it. Google mail works, but also with delay. Maybe someone that have hangouts working full on the amazon hd 8 (8th generation) can share the version of hangouts, google account manager and google service framework that is being used or if there is a way to check a setting.

Just got my OP7Pro after deciding to not get a Pixel4. I'm having some issues though.

Decided not to go the Nexus/Pixel route..... I'm quite frankly tired of the insane prices and terrible features on the Google Phones. I've heard good things about the OP7 so decided to take a gamble. So far, I'm loving it.
Just have a few minor issues that maybe someone here can figure out?
I used Google Voice + Hangouts for SMS and "Chat". For some reason Hangouts will crash when I start typing a SMS. I've already tried to clear storage, re-install the app, check the permissions... everything looks like it should. It won't close on a Hangouts chat, only an SMS chat from within hangouts.
Is there anyway to get my Google Voice number to show up in the outbound of the Google Messaging app? I changed the phone number in the google messaging app to my Google Voice number but my actual device Phone# shows up on the other end and not the GVoice #.

Try downloading carrier services in play store. You need that to use Google services on a carrier device. If you set up RCS, you'll forget all about hangout, everything's available within Google messages app including video chat.

I used voice for 3 years, I don't know if you can still set up voice with your carrier number, but once you do, from what I remember you can set it up to ring your GV, when your number is called. I just checked, it's been a while since I've used GV, but they have updated the services. Find voice amoung the Google services, and you should be able to set it up.

I think you've misunderstood. The new "Messages by Google app" that supports RCS..... it will only display my device actual phone number and NOT my Google Voice #. As I've been using GVoice since it's inception, no one (not even me) knows my actual Tmobile phone #... only my Google Voice #. I can't get the messages app to display / send / show my Google Voice # when I send an SMS through that app... it will display my device's phone #. I can't see of anyway to change it to "send from my Google Voice#" I've been searching the web and it seems like ALL GVoice users have the same issue and it is a persistent one. I guess until Google decides to allow it, there's no way I can use the Messages by Google app to send Texts, etc.
