[Q] Data Backup & Google Drive - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is the amount of storage space used in the Nexus 5's Data Backup totally separate from any storage space used in a Google Drive account?

If you mean the Settings->Backup & Reset, yes that is totally separate from your Drive allowance. Of course if you use an app, e.g. Helium, to backup your apps and/or data to Drive then it will come out of your Drive space.

Cloud service recommendation?

can anyone recommend me a good cloud service?
I'm trying backup my family videos up on the cloud so I don't loose them.
I'm looking for something other then youtube.
somewhere I can keep my files intact original and also can download it off the net without a fuss.
I got a free Box.com account but the problem is upload file size limit is 100mb.
all my videos are bigger then 100mb...
if you guys can recommend a good, free, cloud service with decent storage space and appropriate upload file size limit I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks.
I would recommend Dropbox.

Seconded. I have my phone setup with Dropbox, Dropspace, SMS Backup & Restore and App Backup & Restore to keep my phone constantly and automatically backed up to my Dropbox
+1 for dropbox. you could also get a pogoplug or use their cloud service. you could also try sugarsync

Cloud storage questions

1) Is it possible to instantly save to cloud storage like dropbox without saving to the phone first? For example if I take an image or video, it is instantly saved inside dropbox instead of my phone memory.
2) Is it possible to set cloud storage to sync files immediately when I save a file in my phone memory/sd card? For example when I take a picture, it is save to my phone, I also want a copy of the picture in my cloud storage (e.g. dropbox) immediately automatically.
3) What cloud storage is the best?
4) How to do backup using cloud storage?
Thanks
#1 may be possible, but it's not straightforward. You'd have to map the remote location as a local partition, maybe through Samba or FTP, then change the phone's settings to save to that mapped "folder." It's not so straightforward, and is prone to error, like what would happen if the network connection was down (or went down while you were recording video)?
The easiest solution is #2. There are a bunch of apps which do that (Dropsync and FolderSync Lite are 2 examples).
As far as comparing, it's best to do your own research, as everyone's preferences will differ, slightly. Here is a ZDNet article comparing different cloud services. Pogoplug and UbuntuOne both have apps which will automatically upload any pictures you take, making them single app solutions, if all you want is to back up pictures.

Is it possible to move an app from one phone to another without having to re-login?

I'm in a situation where I've lost the login credentials for an app and can't recover them. I just got a new phone (Pixel 5) and need this app on my new phone. However, I cannot just download it from the Play Store because then I will have to log in.
Is there some way I can lift and load the app from my old phone (Samsung S20) to my Pixel and be able to open it up without needing to log in?
Swift Backup should do the trick, if you backup the app + all its data to the cloud and then restore on the new phone

Thanks, this does look like the right idea. However I just synced the app to the cloud (Google Drive) from my old phone and on my new phone it is not showing up. I see no cloud synced backups when I open up Swift Backup on my new phone. They are both connected to the same Google Drive account. Very weird.

On your new phone in swift backup you probably need to change the "backup tag" to the one of your old phone (in the "cloud sync" tab)

Thanks, that was my issue. Unfortunately it seems that you need root access to backup app data as well. I'm on a Verizon Pixel 5 and do not have root Any ideas if this is possible without root with some other app?

Android backup - two phones - but same google account? How to do?

Sorry, novice question:
I have two phones (for 2 countries) but one phone I want to replace. Issue is, both have the same google account. So I want to backup one and transfer all data apps etc. to a new phone.
Same accounts sounds conflicting. Should I use a different google account for that?
The Google account isn't of interest if you make use of the Android Backup Service what backs up Android data to Google Drive, and allows you to access it on the web. It is a convenient file-hosting cloud service for Google users to manage data without hassle..
Note:: That it won’t save SMS, Google Authenticator Data, Custom Settings, Bluetooth Pairing and Security Data for you.

Well, while doing it I ran into one problem, the 15Gb max Google drive allowance. My gmail is there too.
So it does make sense to have different google accounts for different phones.

Quota and Functionality Questions related to Device Backup

I am confused about inconsistences between Device Backup on two different Pixel phones:
On my old Pixel phone, the Backup app says the backup will use Google One storage, so I do not have it turned on.
On my new Pixel phone, the Backup app doesn't mention Google One. In fact, it explicitly states that the device backup will not count towards "Drive" storage.
I'm not sure the new Pixel phone is fully patched (just took it out of the box) so it's possible the software hasn't been updated to reflect the Google One service.
I have the following questions:
Does the device backup count towards a Google storage quota or not?
Is there a difference between Google One and Google Drive?
On both devices, the device backup states that the information is encrypted before being uploaded, but it is not clear whether the backup is inaccessible by Google (can Google decrypt the backup)?
The device backup states that it will backup: apps, app data, call history, contacts, device settings (including Wifi passwords) and SMS & MMS messages. How do I restore these things on the new phone if I back them up on the old phone first?
Can I selectively restore apps and app data for only a few apps? There are some apps that are device-specific (e.g. Syncthing) where I don't want to necessarily restore the settings and app data associated with that app, because my shared folders will be located in a different place on the new phone. I would rather set up from scratch and establish my new folder locations, then allow the files to sync through Syncthing.
Thanks for any answers you can provide to these questions.
I would also welcome links to resources that explain how this works, especially vis-à-vis the new Google One branding.
