Insane wakelocks draining battery. - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got my Nexus 5 after having a Nexus 4 for approximately a year. This is my third or fourth cycle and out of nowhere I'm getting a horrid amount of wakelocks. I usually run Google Now, and have without issue (battery wise) for months and months (at least on my N⁴ running 4.2/.3 AND 4.4). I had Google now on for the first half of the day but it had nearly 80% of battery usage and kept my phone awake relentlessly. Upon shutting it off a few hours ago,I'm still experiencing terrible drain. Can someone give me some insight? I've already rebooted multiple times, cleared cache in Play Services/play store/Google search, etc.
The battery is down to about 30% at 2:30 pm with very little sot (less than an hour) unplugged at 7am at almost 90%. At this point on a regular day I'd have 80% remaining with the same usage on my Nexus 4
Check my screenshots for the bbs stats. These wakelocks are mostly unfamiliar to me.
Thanks in advance for any help.
PS: running latest version of Cataclysm and FK r14.

Hello
I think it will be good if you go to Google Settings > Localization > Off
Sorry for my english, don't hesitate to tell me if you don't understand.

Between that and and always on Google Now, seems to be most of the problem.
OK Google is a battery hogging gimmick. It has zero real world purpose. Use Nova/Apex/Action Launcher.

Battery is so bad I'm about to go charge up my old Nexus 4 and use that until this issue is sorted out. At least that won't die on me for a while and I can actually use all the gimmicky goodies.
Even shutting off EVERYTHING on this phone (mobile data, sync, low brightness, Google now, location, device manager, OK Google, etc.) does nothing to improve battery longevity.

Turn off the key sounds and vibration. That should take care of the audioin.
Ps, how did you get bbs to work on 4.4? I'm using the rc's but can't get bbs to have root privileges

I have the same problem too. It all started with the Google now update.

Best way to get rid of the wake lock is to reboot the phone.

These are already off! I'm getting so fed up with this!
And it just works for me, I'm using RC5 at the moment and going into advanced settings and enabling root works fine on my end.

Is your wifi on during sleep? I'm experiencing really bad standby battery drain IF I leave my Wifi on, but if I use mobile data I end up getting excellent battery life (down from 8-12% / hr to 0.5-1% / hr) Really strange...

Try the reverse then?
Have you Google the "event" wake lock?
Have you tried a (what may seem drastic but actually is not) factory reset?

I had similar problems losing at least 5% an hour most of the time, but in the end I returned the phone to google. Maybe I will buy one again later while this gets all sorted.

Ok, did a little research on my phone. Turn off the "ok Google" thing in the Google search bar, just change your language to English UK. That'll get rid of the audio in and a lot if the other stuff.

I think its the new Google search update, I had this issue since the update and uninstalled the updates in the apps section and the problem has gone away.

I just wiped the phone and installed a new ROM and kernel (PSX and Linaro FK 13). Let's see if the problem resolves itself. Will update at the end of today! Thanks everyone for the help but it seems as if Google needs to fix this problem on their end. Me having to constantly wipe/reset/reboot/shut off features/etc. my phone just to get it to function properly is a great annoyance.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

Well, the same thing happens with pretty much every 4.4 rom I install on my Nexus 4. The only way I was able to fix this craziness is installing Matrix kernel. I have a feeling its some kind of conflict with superuser. My battery was reporting screen on all the time for some reason. And yes, my locations have been turned off and left on GPS only

Hopefully this will fix it for you. It seemed like from the screen shots the app better battery status or whatever it was you were using to analyze your phones state had a lot of wakelocks itself.
If you still have issues I'd try a different app to analyze the problem tho. I still havn't even bothered to root mine yet I'm hitting around 75% after 20 hrs.
if you use the following in combo w/ greenify it helped me huge on my old phone.

How is your N5 Battery Life ?

how is your N5 battery life discussion ? when you turn on everything such as bluetooh on , NFC on, sync on, gps on, and brightness set to either 100% or to auto, I wonder how long is your nexus can get through since you fully charged the phone itself from 5-6am in the morning . can it last till evening 10pm if the whole day you use it for texting , facebook, instagram, chrome with 5 tabs minimum , youtube, mail, reading news, recording video and take a snap from the camera .
a humble experience from all of you will be highly appreciate guys.
p.s = the reason why I making this thread is to compare with how good the battery with moto x.

I should be more specific, I'm talking about ordinary people. The people taking pictures using N5 and comparing it to the iPhone 5S are media outlets who have had prior access to the device (or early access from Google).
And honestly if they DO have the phone then they cannot comment on the battery life because it'll take at least 3-5 days (given a week) for the battery to settle in. Not to mention, you won't be doing your daily things on the phone as you'll be busy setting it up with the apps you've used in the past/transferring data/etc.

Nothing a little Titanium backup can't solve. By the looks of the other threads in the forum some people have had the device for a while... As early as the beginning of October. No point in shooting down someone's thread just because you have nothing to contribute to it.

OT: I know this isn't the right place but...How is the back of the white N5? It get dirty fast? Could it turn yellow as someone said? :s
IT: It should take a week for the battery to stabilize, so the first real impression could come just in some days

Its lovely but so is the black I got both here but prefer the white.
The OS is the biggest change, a lot has changed in kitkat. Different ways to access different things and the app menu is completely different. Battery life I got near 3h 58 with 10 percent left from 82 percent and that's from restoring all my apps and more so I'm kinder hoping we'll reach 5h or a little more. Screen is beautiful but speaker isn't great. Though I'm comparing the speaker to a 5S which is pretty good.

I have nothing to contribute? ...... you can't tell the battery life with having the device for less than a week.
This thread is just as pointless as the threads asking for the best ROM/Kernel or threads asking when TMobile will have N5?
I'm not shooting anyones thread but its just a silly question to ask when the phone was released just a little over 24 hours when only <1% of orders requested has been fulfilled. The only ones with the phones right now are media outlets or the individuals who ordered immediately and live in a close proximity to the point that they can have next-day shipping pretty much.

If you set the location service to Device only, I expect things will become much better.
The other location settings enables Googles data collection of our movements, not just our location. This is how Google Now will tell us things like how far we've walked or cycled. In order to know this, the phone is basically waking up every few seconds, getting location information and firing it back to Google.
Google have said themselves in some key note speech that their new location collection API's will use 1% of battery power an hour, which doesn't sound a lot put like that, but equals a quarter of our battery capacity in a day. If you haven't a good cell signal, I expect this 1% is very conservative.
Unfortunately there is no way to tame this collection of data, even if you opt out of everything. Basically if Wi-Fi is enabled for location gathering, it collects this data even if we ourselves don't use it. Google will be using this data to collect information about us, and also uses it for detecting traffic congestion.
Try setting location to Device only and see if things improve, even with apps then using GPS as their only option it will probably be better. While GPS does use a bit more power, it will not be pinging every 10 seconds or so.
Also in the battery page look at the Screen On and Awake blue bars. Ideally you should only have Awake shown at the same time as Screen On. If there are lots of Awakes without the screen being on, that is something using your phone when you are not, usually this is location services.
Regards
Phil

Massive drain with no wake locks

Hey all
I had a wake lock trigger that was draining my battery so I decided to try and find what was causing it. I turned off all background sync and disabled GPS. I charged my phone to full and then let it drain over night. As you can see in screen shots... Massive drain occurred with no visual signs of the cause. Anyone have an idea?

Did you get any shots of the Kernel Wakelocks and Partial Wakelocks screens in bbs? That's where you would see the culprit(s). Also, do you ever do soft reboots? Some people (including myself) have experienced increased battery drain with no visible wakelocks after soft rebooting. Doing a full reboot seems to fix it.

Maybe there is a bug in your settings data.

ahh, thats a little better, but itll drop a little more with use. while 20 is a little high, id still classify as normal. really anything up to 20% is normal. typically, after a full cycle, i see android os between 9-15%. but it would all depend on exactly how you use your phone.

i see that chrome(and chrome sandbox) is taking a huge amount of battery for very little use. 21% together, just to respond to xda..
Install system monitor from play store and check CPU freq and number of CPU's online while screen on.

As said above....use the phone normally and check when its almost drained. It will surely be much lower.
If location is on...it will probably be higher than 10% I'd guess. If so....completely normal.

[Q] Too much battery drain from xposed..

So I got the closed framework and downloaded gravity box, knock code, and app ops. While the phone was fully charged and on standby it turned from 100 to 75% in a couple hours on standby. And while using thenphone there was too much battery drain. Does anyone know from which this happens (I think GB) but please share.
PS. Before applying I would get 20h+ of battery on low to medium usage.
Doesn't knock code need the digitiser to be powered up even when the screen is off?

The Knock Code drains your battery. It requires the digitizer to be constantly on, thus the drain.

The Knock Code drains your battery. It requires the digitizer to be constantly on, thus the drain.

Doesn't knock code need the digitiser to be powered up even when the screen is off?

The knock code module just replaces the pattern lock. It doesn't keep the digitizer on like the LG G3. Doesn't work when the screen is off.

Battery drain rates are very dependent on usage patterns and sometimes the most insignificant settings changes can lead to well hidden sources of current consumption.
So my advise is to try to remember if you made any changes in your applications or usage patterns right before or after starting to use Xposed, as your answer my lie there.
Also try to identify if the high drain occurs from Xposed itself or one of the modules, by deactivating and/or uninstalling modules and Xposed. Please be very careful that usage patterns might easily tip your conclusions off.
To somehow prove what I'm saying here, I've noticed that on a high usage day, my N5 can last as low as only 8-10 hours on a charge, while on a low usage day, after 12 hours since unplugging, it still has at least 80% of the original charge.
Have a nice day!

I guess it is on the LG G3, but on that device it can also be used when the screen is on, as a lock screen method, which is what the module emulates.

Ok. Well as suggested turn 1 off , run for as long as possible. Turn another off and run as long as possible. Etc

Its fine that its only while the screen is on and its pretty cool actually.
I think I found the problem and that's its from xposed itself....after I uninstalled the framework I THINK that there is less drain...
Can everyone share their version of xpised and what modules they're running and how is the battery usage...?
Thanks

No additional drain. Latest version available via the xposed installer app.
Really, the user experience with Xposed varies from one user to another xD

To a limit...as having so much drain using three known modules is very starnge. I lost 35% on a couple hours if total standby. So there is something wrong.

battery life is horrible, what can I do? (stats included)

I have 2 hours of SOT! Why? I use a a stock 5.0.1, rooted with latest ElementalX. Greenified all apps except of the ones I need notifications from, gps is off, auto brightness and I can't get a decent battery life? Why?
I know people like GSam, but could we get a BBS log please?
I dont have that, but I will install it now. For now, please help me with what I have

I can't do much with what you have. That's why I requested you provide a BBS log.
I can tell you that you need to go into Developer Options and disable NuPlayer (and reboot). That's (one of) the culprits of crazy battery drain in 5.0. I don't use ElementalX, so I can't say if it's default settings are contributing to your problems or not. You may want to roll with stock until this issue is fixed?
I recommend for now turning off NFC and turning location off or setting to GPS only. Working pretty good on CM12.

It's kinda hard to see anything out of the ordinary. Have you tried different ROMs?

Chrome eats battery. I would get a different browser like Naked Browser.

I don't see anything too out of the ordinary. Have you disabled NuPlayer and changed location mode to Device only?
Please use the "Battery Life Help" thread convienently stuck at the top of this section.
