[Q] Can I swap the Smiley key with the 'enter/new line' key? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My single largest complain is the stock keyboard.
I was able to get the voice input key showing, but the need to keep the period key pressed to find the question or exclamation point seems a bit convoluted to me.
The one I can't stand is the freaking smiley key taking over the New Line key in the SMS/Hangouts app. I have to press the CAPS lock to see the New Line key
I wish I could disable the smiley key or swap it to have the new line key as default in the lowercase keyboard...

Never mind... I found 8sms app and it does exactly what I wanted, plus I like it better than the hangouts for SMS... :good:

Excellent find! Works for me too....geeze which I would of known that a while back...hahaha
hey, thanks!
I had been hitting 123 all the time, too!
You'd be surprised how many people don't know this and many other neat tricks. Simply because they aren't published in the manual or were too lazy to read it.
speaking of keyboard tricks. check out finger keyboard v2.1
i installed it a few days ago and cant stop using it, even when it takes half as long to use the hard keyboard
and no i dont work for them

POCKETCM Keyboard does the same thing. Depending on the layout of the keyboard, you can hit the letter "k" or hold it down and it will type in a Capital "K" ... saves from hitting SHIFT+Key. Or.. hold down a key and puts the number...
One thing this does that FingerKB does not do is that you hold down a KEY and you can CUT, COPY, or PASTE.
I used to use the stock Keyboard to CNTL-C (COPY) etc... but now, just a single keypress...
if you hit shift or go into caps on finger keyboard you have cut copy paste as wella s a buttload of other shortcuts (ie www, http, .com, .net) and a bunch of phrases like where are you? When will you be here? what are you doing? etc

ShapeWriter Menu switch?

I recently started using shapewriter on my Nexus one. Not really sure why it gets a bad wrap since after I got used to it, I can type about twice as fast with fewer errors as using a regular soft keyboard or keyboard replacement which was welcome since I lost my HW G1 keyboard switching to Nexus. And hell it's free and legal. But I had a couple of quick questions in case anybody else on here uses it.
1. Sometimes I want to use the regular android keyboard for apps like terminal, is there a menu key to let me switch to the android keyboard. On the regular keyboard it's just hold down 123 button and switch inputs. I can't seem to find an equivalent in shapewriter unless I go back to the android settings page and shutoff shapewriter manually in there.
2. anyway to set a gesture to launch the voice input stuff since there isn't a voice input shortcut on the keyboard.
Thanks!

I'm looking for a keyboard that has the secondary characters over the primary ones as well as the voice input key.
I didn't like shapewriter and better keyboard seems to be missing the voice input keys.
Like the stock keyboard, but hate having to push a seperate key to get numbers and then again for the letters.
To change the keyboard just hold down on the text field until the menu pops up and select input method

That is a very useful tip and almost exactly what I need. The one app that tip doesn't seem to work for is terminal, which is the app I mainly need to switch back to the stock keyboard as it is the only one supported. or perhaps I should find a better terminal program.
Though its not as good as the HTC IME keyboard with a Voice to Text, a Long press on '.' will bring up a menu to select punctuation. I just found this out yesterday.

Help in moddifying android stock keyboard

Hello, i successfully decompiled and changed my punctuation menu, and added custom smiley keys to it.
Now i am trying to have it ALWAYS display the smiley menu, not the smiley key where the enter goes, but when pressing and holding on the action key (whatever it may be) i want it to show the list of smiley faces. But i dont even know what the list of smiley faces is called or where the action for holding the button is.
Any help is appreciated. Need to get my brain rolling again :/
Just an occasional bump

cm9/10 new line SMS

Just want to share with you guys. I've been using cm9 and 10 for a while but always had problems composing SMS's.
The Enter/return key replaced with a smiley! Gooogled it but other people also faced the same.
I've been living 3 months without adding any new lines on my SMS. But recently, I finally found a solution.
[Press the Shift key, then Enter.] As easy as that.
wonder why the're is no 'first time tutorial' about this when opening the messaging app.
You can fix it in SMS app settings. There's an option to replace the smiley function with "send" or "enter" button.

[Q] voice to text button disappeared

just got my Nexus 5 and really digging it so far.
The one thing I seem to be missing is the voice input key on the stock android keyboard, i still have the option checked for it in settings but all that is in its place now is a comma and with a hold down press just the settings button. it really bums me out i used to use that feature daily on my 4. so this morning i did a factory reset because it was there as i was setting up the phone. what it seemed to me was when i went to the input settings and disabled vibrate on keypress it disappeared and won't come back. Has anyone else had this problem or know how to bring it back?
You need to tick Google voice typing in language and input as an input option as well
you are on the ball! that did it! thanks for helping out a fool so quickly
You're welcome. I keep pressing it by accident because I'm used to the comma key being there on the cm keyboard on my N4.
Only just discovered that pretty much all the symbol keys have long press options, even though they don't display any subset options like the number keys.
This also fixed it for me! Cool
