[Q] How I Uninstall kernel ? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How do I Uninstall kernel and go back to stock kernel ?
(I have installed franco 14 kernel)

Did you make a backup using TWRP? Use that if you did.
If not, get a factory image, extract it, and flash the boot.img using fastboot. (Assuming that everything else is stock, otherwise disregard this)

Or you could just flash this in TWRP: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2518816
Wipe cache and dalvik afterwards, then reboot.

What do you mean by "Assuming that everything else is stock"
You mean by the rom ?
I kept on stock rom..

Last question,
If I install another custom kernels, does I need to wipe cache and dalvik afterwards, too ?

Switching kernels; do you need to reflash?

Im on cm7 with dragon kernel. If I wanted to flash faux kernel, do I need to reflash cm7? My guess is I would probably would need to reflash the entire ROM over.

No, just wipe cache and dalvik cache in recovery then flash any kernel. And i believe if you want to go back with cm kernel, same wipe then reflash rom..

I+1 for the fix permissions and I ndont see a stock cm kernel so I think he is right if you want stock cm kernel you have to reflash or restore a nandroid backup.
Couldn't you technically go thru advanced restore and just flash the kernel? I've only gone into there once but can't remember the options available. (This would be to restore cm7 kernel only, follow previous instructions for new kernels)

I think advanced would only let you restore system, data, cache, dalvik cache, boot.img, individually

Just checked it and was about to edit my post. You are correct, no kernel option, would be cool if backups created included the currently installed kernel and you could restore thru that too.

Tutorial for flashing/installing a kernel

Hi
I just bought my first android phone which is a Google Nexus S, and I guess flashing/installing (I never know which is the correct term to describe this action!) a kernel from XDA can give better performance or some extra features, e.g. BLN
However, I don't seem to be able to find a complete tutorial of how to flash/install a kernel, can anyone help me with this please?
Thanks in advance
First you need root.
Reboot into recovery and wipe Dalvik cache maybe twice.
Then find the kernal in your SD and install
Reboot

wipe dalvik cache once. then proceed to flash kernel

Wiping cache does not delete your data.
Unlocking the bootloader to get a custom recovery will wipe everything.

so in this case, flashing a kernel will NOT delete my data, correct? since I don need custom recovery, and I have already rooted
U dont need to wipe cache. Simply wipe delvik cash then flash your kernel on your sensation.

You don't have a custom recovery? I suppose you could use Flash Image GUI but you're really gonna wanna get a custom recovery. Especially since you want to make a backup before you flash in case something goes awry.
*if you didn't wipe /system and /boot it is NOT A FULL WIPE*
Doesnt matter just wipe dalvik cache and ur good. Through custom recovery

clockwork recovery is the base for flashing anything.

use this guide to install CWM(See Part 3 of the Guide)
once done just wipe dalvik cache in CWM and flash any kernel .zip file
you dont need to wipe dalvik cache, cache, or anything else. as these dont have anything to do with the kernel. you can flash kernels via recovery(in .zip form), or with fastboot/terminal emulator(in boot.img form).

[Q] Re-install Gapps?

Hello,
I am completely new to the rooting world and have what might be a very basic question to most of you. I performed my first root over the weekend on my Verizon GS3 and after reading many of the benefits of flashing CM10.1, I jumped ship from stock touchwiz/jellybean to CM10.1. After flashing CM10.1, I realized the Gapps zip file I flashed was 20121011, which is the version for CM10.0. My phone is running fine with no bugs, but I’d like to know how I can go about getting the correct version of Gapps to run with CM10.1? Can I just uninstall the Gapps file I flashed and re-flash the current version? Or, do I need to start from scratch and wipe everything out again and re-install CM10.1 and the current Gapps version?
Any help would be greatly appreciated...
You can just flash the newest version of gapps. What I do is, before I flash, wipe both caches, flash, wipe caches again, reboot. You dont have to do a full wipe if your flashing the same rom, unless it is recommend for that rom.

Thanks PACmaned, I will try that. I assume by wiping the caches you mean, "Wipe cache partition" and "Dalvik cache"? One last question just so I understand the process correctly. First, wipe both caches...Second, install the new version of Gapps. Third, wipe both caches again, is that correct?....I just want to make sure I follow the steps to a "T", so I don't end up with a brick.
Thanks again for you help...
David
Yep!! Thats how I do it when I flash a ROM and I have not had an issue yet!

Nexus 5 Factory Reset Question

basically i want to do the 4.2.2 update but i have franco kernel , if i just do factory reset , will it go completely stock along with the kernel or do i have to flash a img???
and if i do how will i go about doing that?
You have to have stock recovery to take the ota. So, download the 4.4 factory zip, extract it and flash boot.img and recovery.img in fastboot.

Then there's the easy way. Flash this.

You can have any recovery. Only stock recovery will automatically apply the update. Custom recovery you'd have to boot into it manually and flash the update.
That said anything else custom (kernel, modified /system) then definitely should not attempt ota.
Everyone please read "ota helpdesk" sticky thread in general.

Yes it is. You returned to stock then modified it so it is no longer stock. You cannot update unless you're still stock, but you're not. So flash latest stock.

I used CWM recovery to install it and then i got a more specific error (/system/framework/core.odex contains..., so it is xposed)Should I reflash the system.img, and does this wipe data?

If you use the flash all method in the link above it will wipe your data. If you fastboot flash system.img only then nothing gets wiped

OK whatever. You asked if it wiped data, which insinuates that you don't quite know enough.
Anyway, whatever, you know where the guides and info threads are now. Every question you've asked is covered there so please read them before posting threads
Thanks.
