Ok guise, I'm in some serious need of help here.
Got a new phone, flashed this and that, was trying out new ROMs and stuff, and then I accidentally flashed Faux's MAKO kernel. 028u
Now my Nexus gives no signs of life, isn't recognised via adb, can't get into fastboot with hw buttons or anything at all. What options am I left with?

Sending it to Google.
Next time you should probably be more careful about what you do to a $350-$400 device, eh?
So any kind of hardware intervention wont really help me?
I won't be sending it to Google, since I'm not from the US
What can a qualified service provider(not really sure if that's the correct translation) do for me?

Wow. I didn't even think a Nexus 5 was brickable.
That's a feat right there.

You can brick most devices by flashing an incompatible kernel, same as prior nexus phones.

There are smart people out here hooking up their car coolant hoses to transmission breather ports and you expect forethought from street level smart phone users? What backup?
No hate in the thraed plz
Was flashing stuff on Nexus 4 the day before, had everything in the same folder and because of this accidentally flashed a mako kernel... Yeah **** happens. N4 is still an awesome phone though, running 4.3.1 custom makes it much more usable than N5 atm, so I can wait a bit more with ease... Any kind of suggestions/solutions won't hurt no one though

Take a screenshot of what your computer picks the device up as in my computer. I think your bootloader might be toasted (pre- Android bootloader). We might be able to get some kind of bootloader repair going...

Are you in Windows or Linux? If Windows, is there nothing listed under "Other" devices? Also, can you try running Linux and doing an lsusb to try and find the device?
This guy (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2347060 flashed the wrong image on his n4 and was able to recover using the process he outlines in the post. Perhaps this would work for you too (it might be a long shot since your computer does recognize fastboot), but hey, worth considering. Good luck.
After a gazillion tries, managed to get my phone into fastboot.... Don't ask how, because I simply don't know...
Seems like that at least some of the time my phone was also in some sort of bootloop or sth, because 60% of my battery is gone.
Whatever it may have happened, the issues are sorted out and I can continue with flashing....the right kernels hopefully.
EDIT: tried it again and can confirm - I can only get into fastboot when all these criteria are met:
- phone is turned off
- press and hold down the both VOL buttons
- continue holding them down and plugging the phone to a PC(ADB installed of course)
Hope this might be helpful to someone.

Updated the phone to the latest PA 10/15 build, flashed SU then gapps. After letting everything settled in, boot into recovery and flashed IX kernel 6.3.6 like I always do after every PA updates, but this time my phone won't boot at all, wont even boot into download mode. Stays on the black screen, won't even vibrate. I tried taking off the battery and plugging it in on the computer and outlet. Nothing works. Its hard-bricked. I sure don't have the money to sent it over for JTAG since I don't get paid till next week plus this is my work phone. WHAT TO DO? WHAT TO DO?

It doesn't hurt to try those usb jigs its only less than 2 dollars plus free shipping. Won't hurt a bit,but knowing those won't ship in for a week or two.
Any other alternative rather than sending it for JTag service?

Build your own jig with resistors today and find out if it works.
Try taking out the battery and plugging it in and putting the battery back in.

I honestly don't know. Before I flashed the PA 10/15 build I normally wipe cache, dalvik, format/system then flash the rom/su/gapps then reboot. After that I just installed InstigatorX kernel, rebooted then went on to a blank screen, never to turn on again no matter what I do.
I have never experienced this on the previous PA build with instigator X not saying its new builds fault, but thats honestly what I did.
I've had my faults of flashing roms on wrong devices before, but I greatly learned from that. So don't think I flashed the wrong kernel since I only have one kernel saved up on my computer and saved on on my device sd card.
Had your phone been acting funny beforehand? Seems like you did everything right, and others are running the 10/15 PA build just fine. You might have had one of those wonderful fluke bricks...

Is there a counter for that? Fix? or just JTAG is the only solution?
If you're hard-bricked, JTAG or warranty are the only ways out.

Never experienced anything unusual and I know I did things right. Only weird funny things that happen to my phone is a few screen flickers on the previous build and I used build.prop to smooth those out. And on PA 2.15 my phone will occasionally randomly shutdown, but gets back on within seconds. I never OC btw. Always keep on stock frequency.
Can I lie to Samsung about the device not being rooted?

I pretty much told them I did the ICS update then my phone won't turn on from there. And that I barely bought the phone from Craigslist yesterday.
They believed it just a little scared if they found out that my phone is rooted and starts to charge me restocking fee or whatever they do.
This what they told me
Arwyn: Please hold while check the warranty details.
Visitor: ok
Arwyn: I'm sorry for the delay. I'll be right with you.
Arwyn: Thank you for holding.
Arwyn: I see that device is in warranty till March 5th, 2013.

EDIT: This Arwyn Samsung tech support really something
Arwyn: Are you using the same charger and the battery that came with the device?
Visitor: yes its all oem
Arwyn: Do you see any error message on the device?
Visitor: none
Visitor: Like I said the phone does not turn on at all
Visitor: soft keys don't even light up
Visitor: no vibrations, no boot screen, no boot animations or anything
Arwyn: What do you see on the device screen?
OK NOW THEY ARE TELLING ME TO SEND MY DEVICE FOR SERVICE AND REPAIRS COVERED BY WARRANTY. IS THIS A GOOD IDEA TO DO? SINCE MY PHONE IS COMPLETELY ROOTED, HAS A ROM AND CUSTOM KERNEL. LET ME KNOW PLEASE BECAUSE THIS ARWYN PERSON SAID THEY ARE GOING TO DIAGNOSE WHAT CAUSED IT.

Samsung never gives you a replacement device. They will just flash a new firmware to it. If they can't they'll give you a new phone. I'd do it if I where you.

1. Stop shouting.
2. Just do it. Worst thing that can happen is they say no. That said, if they can't get the phone to boot, they'll just send a refurb. If they can get it into download mode, they'll just flash the new firmware and wipe your tracks. Even if they do somehow see that it was rooted (i.e., they boot it into the OS), they'll just tell you that the warranty is void, and the repairs will cost X if you choose to go ahead with them.
Well I sent it in this morning and see whats going to happen from here and then. Hopefully it all goes smoothly.
This was my wifes POS Phone till I upgraded her to a SGSIII for Christmas. Now I have a device that would be perfect for my daughter if it weren't for the pesky phone option and Sprint bloatware. Are there any roms available that strip this phone to bare bones with no radios except WiFi? Haven't been able to find any and it might not be on the top of the Dev's todo list so if anyone is up to a ROM that will make this device at least usable because as a phone it SUCKS, but for a kiddo it would be a great toy with some of the game apps. Thanks in advance, and if I missed a ROM that does exactly what I'm asking in the mountains of pages in the Dev forum, please use only a small flame as I'm old and have a cold LOL.
A tip: when asking for help you might want to avoid talking trash about a device we users enjoy using.
My advice, 'the device sucks' and is a 'pos' so why bother doing anything with it. Go buy yourself, your kid or whoever an ipod and move on.

Just hate HTC. Have since the TP2. No appologies for that when they make life just such a pain in the ass. Even cringed when the wife chose it but cest la vie. I'm not going against the boss. Maybe I'm just stupid but I've tried rooting but its a 2.3.4 and every option this thread gives me doesn't work for some reason or another. ShiftRR doesn't run at all saying ADB is at fault but I can ADB into the whole phone myself no problems, ShiftySonOfA almost works but creates a boot loop that thankfully is repaired by doing an --undo, Quickroot seems to work but then unroots the phone just as soon as it reboots. Trying to do it manually using the info on here gives me exactly the same boot loop as the ShiftySonOfA.BAT file does and trying to update from SD using a PG06img.zip I got from a rootkit fails. I can't help it if I'm a Samsung fan. Their goal in life isn't making their users stress out over their phones by daring to think they can do better than they can. If its too much to ask that my RAM isn't more than half full just with OS and bloatware because this phone refuses to root then so be it but even if its miles below my Nexus it's still MILES above any iPoo device.
Then throw it out and go buy a portable media player, or better yet send it to a dev who would put it to use and go buy some type of portable media player.
Edit: and to anyone who actually wants to try and help this guy, does this really seem like a person we need to deal with in our little speedy community in the future?

Hello guys , I got my nexus 5 from my relatives at US (I'm from India). Within the first month of usage, one fine day its motherboard got too much hot and eventually corrupted. I had to send it back to US to get it replaced (as its warranty can be claimed there). I dont think it's motherboard got corrupted because of rooting or any custom rom. Well after few weeks I got it back, and again within one month of usage it got hard brick. This time I'm not sure why it happened , maybe because of that I installed ElementalX kernel on Madhi rom ? or its happening because I'm using the charger that is provided with it from US and it has few voltage differences with respect to India. please guide me as I dont really want to mess it up 3rd time.
PS : I'm not a noob I have had Galaxy S2 for about 2 years and worked just fine for me without any problem. i always know what im doing but just confused that what is happening wrong with me when it comes to nexus 5. i have rooted so many of my friends phone and installed custom roms and no one ever encountered any problem .
Also to root nexus 5 i had used the roottool kit but i dont think it would have cause any problem as the problem arises after a month or so after rooting or installing a custom rom.!

Stick to the stock ROM . I had all nexus devices ever released , tried most of the custom Roms. And after all am back to the stock one .
The Charger is an Intl one , don't worry about voltage differences am using it on both 110 and 220 .and never try to charge it with higher Amps charger .
All should be fine .

Please try to use fastboot and adb toolkits can be tricky.(I'm no purest)
Did you have a case on while using custom ROM/kernel?Sometimes my phone gets hot while under heavy usage with case.
Are you changing/tweaking anything with trickster or faux,That could be while your phone burned up?
As far as bricking and it occurring a month later,by brick please explain what you see.(does your computer recognize it when being plugged in,Did it random reboot to nothing, Did it just turn off and not on,Did the battery run out and won't charge.Did it bootloop and screen go black?)a brick normally is a result of modifying the software somehow. Even if your electric charging is off that doesn't effect your firmware radio modem etc.
@D.D.P. can you elaborate a little better or did I cover it.lol
I hope any of what I said helps clarify, best wishes.
I bought my nexus 5 from Google Play US and my wall adapter says input voltage can be anywhere between 100V-240V @50Hz-60Hz which is acceptable on ALL countries worldwide. I don't think voltage supply is an issue.
Please tell us how you use your phone, what apps are installed, what rom/kernel you are in, and the last activity of the phone before they went hard-bricked. This information can help us prevent this sort of thing from happening.

The heat issue can be attributed to the charger.
Please try to use fastboot and adb toolkits can be tricky.(I'm no purest)

You covered it. I'd have added the fact that any custom kernals where the voltage is peaked, especially during charging state or when a case that is one piece or doesn't allow enough air flow will cause increased heat. Also, where was the heating problem coming from? Near the camera area or near the speakers? That would be two separate issues. And a device won't simply hard brick after using it, randomly on its own. Its possible that during an update or a tweak or mod that the coding didn't merge properly and would definitely cause that.
I've used imported chargers on both of my old HTC phones and I haven't had a single issue. Many of my friends do the same as the ones I had used to charge the device a little quicker.
My guess is it was just your bad luck that you needed to RMA twice and on top of that from a different country.
Then again, it's good to cover all bases so buy a home country charger and good luck with your phone
Agreed.Bricks don't just randomly. Maybe case of faulty device.I would like to know what OP refers to a brick as on Xda there are different types hard or soft.

Yes, that is a over heat issue from encasing not allowing air flow. Take your case off and make sure you're not running several background processes. Your issue should subside.

Also, don't use aftermarket chargers or quick charge settings. The cells in your terminal aren't designed for voltage flux. Use an LG brand charger, and charge normally. Thanks for reminding me @vin4yak
I contacted somebody on craigslist about a nexus 5. He said it was running cyanogenmod 11 and he said that he didn't like it and was going to put it back to stock. He then messages me saying that something went wrong and that the phone is bricked. I ask him a few questions.. Is the bootloader unlocked, was usb debugging checked before it was bricked, can you get into recovery. He said yes to all of them. He then tells me that he was using nexus root toolkit. But run parallels on his Mac. So the commands are never the same. So the question I have do you think that it's fixable before I go and buy it. He was selling it for 250 but after the brick i told him I would buy it for 200.
If he has used a toolkit not meant for the Nexus 5, there's a good chance that his bootloader and other partitions might have got corrupted. Since he's telling you that he can get into recovery, why doesn't he just flash CM11 which might take him out of the bootloop? Sounds fishy.
Besides that, you know there won't be any warranty for this, right??
If I were you, I would stay away from such a deal. It's your call though.
If it turns on in one way or another it's hardly "bricked" lol.
How much is a digitizer worth? If it's truly bricked that's all that it would be worth to sell it as parts. I might risk it for $100

That is what I was thinking. I mean if he can get into recovery then it's hardly bricked!

Yeah I knew that there wouldn't be a warranty for this, I don't think any of my last few phones had a warranty so I am not worried about that. I have a few hours to decide.
It's not bricked I have bricked Nexus trust me it's bricked:crying: I can't get even into any recovery or bootloader.. I do have a new a nexus though i bought from swappa:good:

Personally I would just buy a brand new one off Google, no risk of "bricked" (lol) phones from other people, and it's not too much more (in comparison to other devices). Plus you get warranty :silly:

Yeah that is what I am thinking, if I can get into recovery I gotta be able to un "brick" it. What I am going to do is make sure I can get into recovery before I buy it.

Once you could do that your good to go:good:
Could be radio bricked. Could be a bargain. Could be a risk.. Getting into recovery is no sure fire way to say it's repairable.
Whats USB debugging got to do with anything ?

I have no idea! I was reading up on unbricking Nexus 5 and they all kept saying make sure USB debugging was checked. Like yous aid. Could be a bargain, could be a risk. I am still debating on buying it.
You could meet him somewhere with WiFi, like Starbucks. Then try to flash a stock Rom and see if everything on the phone works. If it were me I'd just buy a new one tho.

Yea most likely I am going to head to swappa.
It could have other issues. What if its black listed, and he tried to brick it so no one can test it.
What if it turns on, but it got water damage and something else is wrong.
What if there's a hardware failure for sound or radio or anything.
Can't test much in the state its in. I say you're basically gambling.

100 more buys you a perfectly working one.
So I took the gamble and decided to meet the guy.. He worked at AT&T, met him at his store, that was a plus and not in some alley lol. I had my laptop with me and after I bought it. I tried to unbrick it. I unbricked it. It's working flawlessly, checked the ESN on swappa and it's not blacklisted. It was a risky gamble but it did work out. Thanks for all the help on here.
Cool! ?
@kidnice15
That's great. Congrats! Welcome to the n5 gang

Its not an "unbrick" if it wasn't really "bricked" in the first place!

How do you brick a nexus device? If you say toolkit I give up.
Yesterday I flashed CM 13.1 on my OPO and postponed the final tune ups and settings to later and went out to the gym and LOST it there (Or possibly has beed stolen!) and It's so painful because I hadn't installed and activated Adnroid Device Manager and teh Lockscreen was open //I feel very upset now…
I know that nothing can be done and this topic is not relevent here and can be removed, it's OK

Just saying, is it too hard for them to go to recovery and flash any other rom? They can erase your current rom as well no matter what security app you use, right? So, the sooner this thread gets deleted......
Theoretically Cerberus pro can resist a Factory Reset, but I don't know how it does that and if it's bypassable...
sad bro! whats your next phone?

Maybe you can try something like AndroidLost? Though, I believe it requires Google account to be on device beforehand. I'm not sure if it's compatible with CM13, but nothing wrong with trying at this point
Edit: Yep, you do need Google account on device for this app to work. Check this out.

very useful tips. But unfortunately the location on my device was been always deactivated (just when i wanted to search am adress manually, and that was 4 days before I lost!!)
well report it stolen that way they block the emei I think. Then you are sure they wont be able to do anything on the phone. In rare cases they find it and can get it back. Very rare cases. Hope your new phone will be just as satisfying

The IMEI can be changed, wouldn't make a difference if someone is determined once they have the device in their hands

true gladly most dont know about that. Also its a tedious process. Kind of mixed on that cause it can be damn handy, lost my imei on several devices due to a series of unfortunate events. On the other hand it is real handy for the situation of a lost device.

MMMMM My OPO has lost its IMEI so I must change it, any details would be most helpful.
use your cyanogen account. You can use it to locate and wipe if need be and track too!

The unit is not lost.. the IMEI is. It is an invalid one. No matter what I try and have done to the unit it does not come up as a valid one. I was told I would need to change it and then it would be fine. Any help would be great! :good:
