you in case you dont want to lose data dont select wipe data and factory reset option while installing
but this works only when you are upgrading same platform rom example: aokp to aokp
if you want to install cm or some other from aokp you need to wipe data for sure

If u have the option of advanced restore in ur device's cwm, it is possible to restore the data only from a nandroid backup that u have
Else try the titanium Backup app
Hit thanks rather than typing it now Free

You can backup everythink from KIES 3 or use the titanium backup app.And just restore them after you done installing the ROM.
you can also use in store back up for example rom manager or rom toolbox. these can help alot

are the roms your flashing for your device?
if so have you done a factory reset and wipe cache b4 the new installation of newest RoM?
1 last thing have you downloaded the rom from your device internet browser? that has been known to cause issues

NO you don't HAVE to wipe but I would recommend it. Gives you a good clean fresh start. Just back up your user data with titanium or whatever your favorite backup app is and restore it after you reflash. Just don't restore system apps or data.

I second this based on the number of people in the Viper XL thread who didn't wipe beforehand and ultimately had to go back and wipe after facing reboot issues, issues with apps crashing, and other issues of sorts. The best way to guarantee a stable install is just start fresh and restore user apps as mentioned.
Hi, I am currently running stock TouchWiz 4.1.2 ROM, using CWM Recovery, I tried to install the Pac-Man Rom, but after phone rebooted it kept hanging on the PAC-MAN image with the ghosts, phone hung there for a bit, tried to reboot "removed the battery", went back to CWM Recovery, reflashed the Pac-Pam ROM and latest gaps, rebooted phone and the same thing happened,at some point it wiped out my CWM recovery, so I got fed up and reinstalled the TouchWiz factory 4.1.2 image using ODIN, had to reload all my apps and what not.
I want to give this one more try, but do not want to go through all this trouble again. I did a casche wipe and devlick cache wipe, but no data/factory wipe "heard people had success with a dirty flash routine", do I need to do a factory/data wipe for this to work.
I am not new to flashing, but have not flashed a non stock ROM yet, kind of leary after the PAC-Man fiasco, by the way what do you guys think of Cynogenmod or AOKP. Do I have to wipe all my data every time I try a new ROM. Is there a stock, pure android JB 4.2.2 ROM out there. Thanks again.
You have to wipe data/factory reset before flashing. Two different bases. One heavily nodded framework to stock(ish) won't work. Also, if you use something like titanium backup, you don't have to worry about losing things as much.

He is saying do not dirty flash ROMs you MUST do a factory reset as none of these ROMs are the same. By dirty flashing you are flashing one ROM over another which is a boneheaded move as you are likely to be stuck on the bootloader. The ONLY time you should dirty flash is when you are flashing a newer version of the same ROM.

My advice is to do a clean flash every time, and also a full backup. Here's what I do -
- backup all apps using your choice of app - I use MyBackup, there's also Titanium, Rom Toolbox and many others
- backup all sms, call logs
- backup launcher settings
- nandroid backup
- factory reset, wipe system/boot
- make sure you don't wipe internal or external sd card
- update to latest radio or rpm if needed
- flash rom
- flash kernel if needed
- flash gapps
- setup new rom, don't let google restore apps
- install your backup app and launcher
- restore apps, sms, calls etc
- restore launcher and android system
once you get comfortable with this procedure it doesn't take long. And it guarantees a clean phone with the latest apps and new rom with no issues.

Ok everything went fine, installed the Pac-Man ROM 4.2.2. seems much smoother and faster, my first question is how do I enable car mode where all my text messages are spoken out when received, including phone calls, my other question is now my screen is more cluttered by the on screen buttons at the bottom, the back home and systems button. The full clean wipe did help, thanks again.

Hello everyone,
Currently, i'm using the 'HyperSensation' ROM which is based on CM 9. But now, i want to update to CM 10.1, and the only way i see to do this is to flash the original CM 10.1.
As known, if you update your ROM, it's possible without wipeing / loosing data.
But now, if i "update" to the original CM, is this possible without wipeing?

As it's a different base you should't flash CM10.1 over ICS
Just use titanium backup and Sms backup app then Do a wipe All except SD card in recovery and flash ROM & Gapps and PROFIT !!

I don't know how this ROM is based, but since both are based upon CM (well, CM is CM, not based upon), This might be possible.
However, since you (might) want to flash CM10, it's advised to wipe. You can back up your apps and data with Titanium Backup.
Thank you 2, the tipp with Titanium Backup was worth it.
Glad it worked for you
hey guys
my first post on xda actually yesterday i updated my xgamerz v2.2 rom to xgamerz v3 using clockworkmod recovery v6.0.28 everything else worked fine except it vant reboot into recovery ... i CAN reboot in download mode but not recovery.
when i reboot into recovery the samsung galaxy sl page slowly fades away and again reboots the phone into normal mode without going to recovery ( i.e. directly loading to os )
plz help asap
for now do a clean flash from ddlf2 then upgrade v3.. your problem will get solved.. and always wipe dalvik cache and format the system when upgrading the same custom rom. if you are going to any other custom rom just do full clean flash form ddlf2.. so that the rom won't cause any problem in your day to day life..
hope this helps you.

you mean go back to gingerbread 2.3.6 then flash cm10 and then xgamerz with all user data gone
instead of doing all this , i was wondering if i could flash a recovery using nandroid manager app( it has an option to flash recovery) but iam not getting a proper download link for my firmware. . . plz guide
try this : https://googledrive.com/host/0B4xN9...3.0/kernel-cm-10-20130906-galaxysl-signed.zip . and if this didn't work then you'll need to do a clean flash. just do titanium backup of all apps and also backup all you contacts and messages. restore them when you flash v3. you'll get all your userdata and apps as it is. and no need to flash cm10 after ddlf2, just directly flash v3 after flashing ddlf2 ( v3 is based on cm10, so no need to flash that)

try this application : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cgollner.flashify if this didn't work then you'll not have any other way except clean flash. till my knowledge I think it's not possible to flash any recovery on jb ROM's due to different partitioning. i'll still suggest you to do a full app backup with titanium backup and restore it when you flash v3. happy flashing

go to xgamers v3 page ( forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192613) and read the 3rd post which says " IMPORTANT! READ BEFORE FLASHING
THIS RELEASE!" you'll come to know what I'm trying to tell you since beginning.. most important : 1st and 5th point.
