When I'm connected to Bluetooth speakers and watch a video on YouTube from the phone the screen gets dark and had the cast sign shows up the whole time.

I would LOVE to know this. I've found a workaround that involves:
1. Kill YouTube from recents (if you've already got the cast icon over videos)
2. Turn off BT
3. Open YouTube and start playing the video
4. Turn BT back on and connect
It's as if YouTube always assumes you're connected to a BT display?
This isn't specific to the N5. Has happened throughout the last two Youtube app updates...
Supposedly google knows.
Yeah. I think they are trying to force us to use the Chromecast.

my work around is lock your screen orientation (i.e landscape) before playing the video.
wonderful that google is ignoring this problem when there's thousands of ppl complaining about this already.
or they never use bluetooth speakers before.

Hey
Just posting here in case anyone else is having this problem and has found a solution.
The problem is that once I set a youtube video into full screen, I cant get the video player controls to appear again when tapping the screen, meaning I can't seek or pause the video unless I press back to get to the small player. This only happens on my note 12.2 and not on my other devices running the same youtube version (nexus 5 and 7).
I have rooted and flashed the near stock rom from Gatsrom and am using CivZ kernel rev3.0
Uninstalling updates to the youtube app does fix the problem though, so it looks like it might be a problem specific to the note with the latest youtube, so I was wondering if anyone else has hit on this same glitch?
This happens on CivZ rom too, with CivZ kernel or stock kernel. Probably a YouTube glitch.
I am stock non rooted and it's happening to me too..Has to be a YT issue.

The Youtube app isn't adapted to work with screensizes above 11" yet. That's why.
Essentially what happens is the app is stretched and the HUD bugs out because of it.
Must be a regression in the newest version of the app then, since it used to work fine. I've sent feedback to Google regarding this via the youtube app.
Thanks for chiming in everyone!

Same problem here.
It's really irritating! When i enter the Youtube app from a link (in chrome) and then hit the full screen button, and then i want to pause the video, i need to hit the back button but that's immediately takes me back to last app (chrome).
i found out that if I want it to stay in Youtube app, i need to: press the link (in chrome or gmail app), lower the minimized video to the right bottom side of the screen, then enlarge the screen again, after all that i can hit the full screen button and if i want to pause i can hit the back button and it will not exit the app.
Oddly enough the interface can be forced to show up in full-screen mode using the play/pause media controls command. For example if one clicks the button on a pair of headphones with a play/pause button while in full-screen mode then the video will pause and controls show up on screen. As soon as the controls fade away due to the standard interface delay they cannot be brought back by screen touch gestures but the headphones button will bring them back.
Since I'm rooted and use tons of customizations, I've set up a custom gesture in GMD gesture control to invoke the media play/pause command as a work around to this issue in YouTube until it's fixed. I now simply tap and hold 5 fingers on the screen while YouTube is playing full-screen and the video pauses and Youtube displays the player interface.

I have the same problem both on Note Pro and Tab Pro. Very irritating.

I confirm that the problem is solved with version 6. You can get it from here as I did if you don't want to wait to roll out to your country's play store.

My question is i bought an mhl cable and it seems to work ok, but it doesn't seem to mirror the "hud" in movie apps or youtube. For instance, when you're watching a movie player and you tap the screen the options come up (like the little bar where you move the dot to go to a different place in the movie) but with mhl it won't mirror to the tv. When i go to youtube i have no way of changing the options or anything like that (i use a bluetooth keyboard so I'm on the couch) It will show up on the phone (like normal) but it's just not showing up on the tv. Just the video is but no overlaying options or anything like that.
does anyone know how to get the settings to show up? It's really frustrating!!
actually after many different stock roms, it seems that the htc sensation won't let you see the the hud overlay on the tv. So if you're watching youtube in portrait mode it will automatically show you landscape on the tv. This is ok if you have the phone in your hand, but i want to have it sit next to the tv so i can use a bluetooth keyboard (with mousepad, they are freaking awesome!) so i can have a dedicated media box. But unfortunately unless you have the phone in your hand you can't see half the controls while playing videos.
Hope this info helps someone, or someone can prove me wrong
I have a huge issue with the 'sling box for phones' app and its ability to cast to the nexus player. I literally only works half the time. You have to do this weird thing where you start the app, hit the cast button, realize it's doing nothing, restart the app, and then maybe casting will work. Its never worked the first time. Then to boot once you finally get it working it has a huge tendency to lag and force close back to the nexus player home screen. Sometimes this happens so frequently I just give up in frustration. It's ridiculous. I don't have the greatest WiFi connection (your basis Comcast package) but it seems like the quality of the software is not there and I really don't know who or what to blame because all my other casting apps seem to work fine even with a mediocre connection.
The worst part is I have two high end phones (nexus 6 and note 4) which makes it extremely frustrating that I'm running the latest and greatest hardware but it simply just doesn't work like its supposed to.
So after messing around I have found that if you simply just start the slingplayer app on your phone and then do the screen mirroring functionality within the Chromecast app it works flawlessly and doesn't seem to force stop or lag at all. This furthers my confusion as to why the original cast functionality within the slingplayer app just doesn't seem to work. Its just an extra step that is annoying because you cant use your phone while its mirroring unless you happen to have an extra device lying around.
Didn't mean to rant for so long. Hope this was somewhat useful.

I have the same problem where the sling app on the nexus player will just sit there doing nothing. It will work after a few tries but annoying nonetheless. Otherwise I'll use the lollipop screen mirror feature but that's a battery killer and you can't multitask. At least it works...
I would blame the slingplayer devs, we only get one update a year. My HD Pro is sitting pretty useless because i can't use it with casting at all. I guess they want me to buy a M1.
Just curious but can't you sideload the slingplayer app onto the nexus player? Does it not work? it would be much easier than casting?
Hey guys
so i found this weird problem with Chromecast (2015 model) - If i go to display settings > Cast Screen and start screen mirroring - Phone screen appears on TV but then freezes. In 5-10 seconds phone disconnects from TV
Same with Chromecast app. Casting apps such as YouTube, Netflix, etc work fine.
Any ideas? Thanks
I haven't used the app. But over the weekend I was trying to stream several TV programs. On was on my Blu Pure XL using Chrome - went to YouTube - found the programs I wanted (Bravo's Watch What's Happening Live) - and there was a "Cast Screen" symbol - hit and voila! WWHL was on my TV. All in all I cast about 10 different programs without a problem.
@jaybirdhawaii I was actually having problems with Screen Mirroring - not casting apps. See the youtube video in OP

i've had better luck when both the pure XL and chromecast are on 5GHz instead of 2.4
Is anyone else having trouble casting Netflix from their Pixel 3? I can cast YouTube and Google Play fine. Hulu usually works, and if it doesn't, I can close the app, relaunch it, and that fixes the problem. But Netflix will not give me the option to cast. If I do not have my tablet handy, I have to find what I want to watch on the Pixel 3, then ask my Google Home to play it for me. Pretty frustrating, especially if I am trying to watch a specific episode that may not be the next one up for that show. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? I've looked around on Google, but I've seen nothing but generic responses, like "make sure you are connected to the correct wifi." I am definitely connected to the correct wifi, because I can cast from the other apps, and I can see and connect to my chromecast in the Home app.
I think there's a bug in the Netflix app. I don't have the Cast FAB anymore when I open it. I just start playing it on my phone and then start casting from there.

You get the cast icon once you start playing the video? I will try that when I get home. I thought I had tried that, but it's worth another shot.

Yeah if you tap the screen it shows up at the top like you'd see in YouTube or similar when the video is already playing. It's mildly annoying because if you don't do it quick enough you might have to back up the show a few seconds but it works. I believe it to be an app issue because the same thing has happened to my fiancee who is using a Pixel 2 and it happens to me on my 3 XL.
Netflix
I have the same problem on my Pixel 3 XL. I have to open the Netflix app, start the show, hit the screencast icon, then it just freezes. So I have to close the app, clear it from memory (swiping up from the recent apps screen), then reopen Netflix. After that it works. But I have to go through this procedure every single time I want to watch Netflix. What gives? How can companies as big and successful as Netflix and Google not be able to make an app work with basic functionality?
I have the same issue with every device at home (pixel 3, huawei p10 and Moto X Play). Hope it'll get fixed soon...
