Galaxy S3 (sprint) for WiFi Only -- No Cell Service - General Questions and Answers

Hello,
Thank you for taking the time to read (and hopefully respond to) this post. I bought a used s3 and want to use it as a wifi only device. It is a Sprint phone I've got running the Hyperdrive ROM. Pardon me, but I am very new to the smart phone thing and find this forum both extremely helpful and overwhelming.
My question is: how to optimize the device for wifi only?
Regards,
Brent

I have aigopad, i turn on airplane mode and switch the wifi on/off whenever i use it.
Not much effect if you ask me, might be different for you though.
Cheers.

Thank you for the response. The scope of this project will likely be instructive. My goal is to rely only on wifi for all needs. In other words, to not pay for any service explicitly on the phone. No talk/text/4g. To accomplish this I am using GrooveIP, gchat, facebook, etc. I'm wondering if anyone else has experience with this and what configuration/rom/tweaks are recommended.
Again thank everyone for taking the time out to read and reply.
Regards,
Brent

[Q] How do I update firmware?

Hello all, I'm trying to update my phone and get some new firmware on it, but I'm very basic when it comes to updating my phone, and I don't want to ruin it in anyway. I have a friend who constantly updates his, and I would like to get mine out of the stone age.
My current phone is the Samsung Galaxy S (SAMSUN-SGH-I896) on Rogers in Canada. The firmware I'm running is 2.1, but I can't seem to update it from my phone in anyway.
Is there a way that I can update my firmware easily? Or can someone point me in the right direction, because everything on these forums looks like french to me.
Thanks in advance.

Get Kies mini from Samsung. You will be able to update to 2.2 from there.
Please spend a little time searching, reading the stickies and looking around before starting new threads. What you asked is the heart of this forum and investing a little of your time looking for info that's already here rather than expecting personalized service is appreciated.

The heart of this forum is helping others and modding our phones. It sounds like all he wants to do is update to 2.2. no need to berate him for asking a question and in no way answering it.
to answer the question what the first poster said. Use Kies mini
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
These are very explicit and easy to follow instructions for updating to Froyo(Android 2.2) using Kies. Although the tutorial is for the AT&T version, all steps are the same. If you follow them to the 'T', you should have Froyo on your phone in less than an hour. Good Luck!
Is 2.2 the most up to date version I can get?
Officially released. Yes.
Much appreciated, I work on Macs at work, so I'll have to give this a shot when I get home. Thanks for the help, if anything goes wrong, I'm sure I'll be back on here with questions!

If it does go bad, be back on here searching, not asking questions or starting new threads. While we are here to help, it is annoying to come in asking for help with the same problems that have alrewady beenh solved dozens of times and can be found by doing a search. Nobody in here is paid to be here, so helping yourself is always appreciated. Of course, if you are really stuck, then ask, but it is always better to post to an existing related thread than to start a new one.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 (GT-P5100) compatibility with Telcel Mexico

Greetings you all.
Sorry to bother you, I'm a noob and I was unable to fin any thread with the information I need (yes, I've searched on XDA an other places).
I'm travelling to US in a month or so and I wan to get a new phone, the one I have in mind is the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 (GT-P5100), the problem is that I want to make sure that this specific model is the one compatible with my current mobile service.
I have hired a plan of internet and voice with Telcel.
According to my research, Telcel works on GSM 850/1900 and UMTS 850/1900, is that right?
According to this site:
pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=3391&view=1&c=samsung_gt-p5100_galaxy_tab_2_10.1_32gb
The cellphone should be compatible, but, once again, I want to make sure that I don't waste my money like a dumb, because of this I, as a noob, request your help telling me if it's safe for me to buy this model and enjoy the full capabilities of it.
Thanks in advanced and best regards to you all.
Reply please
C'mon guys, pleaese someone help me with this.
I need to be pretty sure before I make any purchase.
Best regards and thanks a lot in advanced.
Pretty please
Ok guys, please do reply to this thread, I know it's such a basic question but it's something I'm not entirely sure about.
Please, just review the device specs and the carrier specs and let me know if device would be working at full.
Best regards.
Ohh, please
Please guys, It's been over a month and I have no response, I know it's not your duty but please help me, I want to purchase this.
Best regards
No info
Guys, no one willing to solve this puzzle for me?

Hi
Thanks for writing to us at XDA Assist. Paying someone to alter your device has left you in a position where you have a modified phone but no knowledge on how it got to that state or how to proceed. I firmly believe that if you can't take the time to learn how to do these things for yourself then you shouldn't be doing them at all. Having a modified phone, and working with a modified phone, requires a certain level of knowledge, it requires research, it requires work. Now you can see that taking the easy way initially hasn't really benefited you in the long run. Anyway, you have a lot of learning to do, Samsung phones can be especially difficult to modify due to the way that they're locked down. You're going to need to head over to the Sprint Note 3 section and start doing as much reading as you can. I can't really point to one specific thread because there's so much information that you need to take in. If you get stuck though there's a q&a section that you can ask for help in. Here's a link to the Sprint Note 3 device forum:

Lol look man, I am very familiar with flashing stock Roms and custom roms. As well as most other device modifications. I reached out for advice in hopes of hearing someone's output that may have already done this type of procedure.with that being said,if I can afford to pay someone to do what I may simply not have TIME to do,then that's my prerogative. These forums are to help people, not to write a reply that is in no way helpful. Maybe you should be the one that needs to do more reading. ☺??
P.s.
I have a Galaxy Note 3 flashed to Boost Mobile and pay only $35 a month, I'd say I was very benefited. Lmfao ???? You mad bro? ???

You came here for help and yet you LOL at the help....
Sounds like you take your device back to the carrier and stay stock but you also stated you are familiar with flashing, and yet you are "scared".
And sounds like you should be doing the reading, after all you came here to ask, vice searching and reading for yourself. Nevertheless
Good Luck and Thread Closed.

Hello,
timmaaa pointed you in the right direction, and as he suggested you will get more help posting your question in the device specific forum.
XDA Assist is not a "Support" forum it is to guide new users to areas they can find the help they need.
Please post your question in the link above or the Sprint Note 3 Q&A section to get the answer/help you are looking for.
Thread closed.
Thanks for understanding,

[Completed] evo design looking for fast rom w/ speech recognition

phone is rooted i've been running rom found at h**p://androidforums.com/threads/rom-forgottenkingdom.712740/ The rom is based off android 4.0.3. So, this being the case, is there a simple way to add speech recognition to the rom? If not can someone please point me to a good rom that does have speech recognition? I really do not want to go to a rooted version the stock rom. I will not be the owner of a phone without admin rights/privileges. For me the lack of speech recognition is a deal breaker. I'm hoping for the latest best kernal the phone can accommodate & fast/quick response & robust (glitch proof crash proof)
THANKS!!!
P.S. I'm hoping it's ok that I posted in this area of the forums I didn't find a Evo Design area, the phone is old & was never that popular anyway from what i can tell
P.S.S. (added these lines 4th October 2015) I'm looking for further assistance as my initial questions unanswered. Sorry if i'm being too much of a bother maybe this phone is long since forgotten. If anyone could more offer help on this it would sure be appreciated.
Thank You!
Hi
Thank you for using XDA Assist.
Unfortunately I didn't find anything on XDA for your device. What about using a 3rd party app for speech recognition like Dragon Mobile Assistant?
continued
as noted in the PS i'm aware there isn't a forum devoted to this particular phone. I was hoping that someone here had enough knowledge to at least point me in the right direction as concerns phone/rom issue. The problem i foresee with the work around you've suggested is that for any other apps w/ voice recognition element there is likely to be a need to tie into the android native voice recognizer. thank you for your effort primo i really do appreciate it and you have made me aware of the dragon mobile assistant which i did not even know about. your reply just didn't really answer my question. maybe i'm on the wrong forum site and should be looking for a forum with an area specifically dedicated to my device. Not really sure what to do next so any further assistance would be appreciated.
ThankYou
the workaround didn't work either
Installed Dragon Mobile Assistant. Attempt to take notes via voice fails. Pretty much same way google keep will install but cannot take notes via voice. Failing in same manner likely for same reason lack of speechrecognizer. Further assistance needed.
Thank You
I have no ther idea, sorry. I suggest you to ask in the General Q&A thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2257421
Good luck

(Help!) moto g xt1040 no signal

Hi people, I'm Mike from Argentina, this is my very first post, so I need help. I'm sorry if I disturb you with this, but I can not find any answer to this. Well, this is it...
1 month ago, I installed a mokee rom (one of the latest ones. That has android 7.1.2 Nougat) that I liked a lot. So, the problem came 3 o 4 days ago, 7 days top. And it is that my device started to act strange, in the matter that it does not receive signal from my provider (movistar), So, this problem hapenned after I proved a VPN service called Psiphon pro (I don't know if any of you have experienced it.) so the day after I used this VPN provider, my phone has no bars, and it says "sin servicio" ("no service", I think is the better translation). Well, I have tried every way that the web says, I tried another modem file (flashed with it), saw if the IMEI is consistant between the printed number inside the phone and what says the information of the rom (it does), I have seen the carrier is recognized by the phone, modified APN, and finally Im trying to install the STock ROM of my phone So, I need to know if the problem is my phone or is the VPN..... I don't Know if there's another stuff that I haven't tried yet. If there's another thing or if you recomend me another ROM that I could try and it has no problems with the carrier I will be gratefull.
Thanks for reading, and essentially for your answers, help and time.
So sorry for my english, if there's something that I haven't explained well, I'll be connected pretty much wainting for a solution or your questions.
Thanks a lot.
