Hey,
i am currently galaxy S4 owner. I am interested in buying nexus 5 black 32GB model. If i order now, has the manufacturing improved with regards to microphone issue, speaker issue, and some buttons rattling? I am more concerned about microphone and speaker though. My friend has N5 and there is a microphone issue - no one can really understand him .
Also, any improvements over galaxy S4? I am using cutomized TW 4.3 UEML6 (got updated from samsung two days ago), so its pretty good so far. I just have storage issue with S4 and having snapdragon 600. battery life is medicore, i mean everything is debloated - no samsun crap, not much google crap except gmail and youtube and google settings. GPS + Location is always off. i pull 23 Hours on avg with 2 hrs 58 minutes on screen time. This is when almost everything is off, and usage is few youtube videos (10 minutes) HD, web surfing, texting, and 20-40 min HSPA+ calls.
Is it really worth switching?
I am not having loss going to N5, i mean i dont have to input extra money.
Note: I am a university student that commutes a lot : trains and buses. Also, my carrier uses HSPA+ AWS band (1700/2100) so i am not sure if that has any influence over the battery performance..
Thanks!

I had the GS4, the Nexus 5 is a vastly superior device. As far as the defects are concerned, they aren't as widespread as people make them out to be. Keep in mind that nobody rushes to post "My N5 has no defects!" threads. Mine was a launch day model and it is absolutely flawless. No mic issues (people often think I'm on a landline), no power button rattling, and the speaker volume was fixed with one of the OTA updates. It's MUCH louder now. Battery life is also pretty good, I average between 4-5 hours of screen time. I was 16 hours off charger today with over 2 hrs screen time and about 45 min of calls and I was only down to 55% before I tossed it on the charger. Not quite as good as my Moto X, but still better than pretty much every other android phone I've owned. If it's within your means, I'd say go for it. Nothing beats the stock android experience.
I wanted to buy the S4 but by the time I could save up enoughf money. The nexus 5 came out.
So I purchased it.
The latest and greatest form Google.
Nexus 5.
All I can say is that it been a royal disappointment. Heck Id swap you my N5 for your S4. If I could.
I will not get into the details. Cause I find that the few who have spoken out about the N5 short comings. Have been baned or kicked off XDA.
If a senior member is willing to let me talk. Im willing to have a detailed Technical Debate on why its the worst phone ever made.

You don't need a senior member's permission to speak your mind. Just be respectful and be prepared for some backlash from some of the less mature posters here. I for one would love to hear your opinions. I think it's a great phone, though it certainly isn't the magical unicorn phone that some people make it out to be. I do like it a lot more than I did my S4, though I prefer my Moto X.
I came from the s4 prior to my n5 and haven't regretted the UPGRADE for a second. Battery life is the same for me. No Samsung Knox crap to worry about, unlocked from the get go, early aosp roms run great compared to early aosp based roms for Samsung... and you are always running the latest version of android vs what Samsung is on and my favorite n5 feature... no waiting for carrier branded updates.

I came from a S4. I had a AT&T S4. I was lucky enough to have received mine with AMDL firmware so I could still use Loki to flash firmware. However it was always a big pain when I had to odin/flash back to stock, I had to remove SIM card and not connect to wifi to make sure it didn't even attempt to download the OTA Update that broke loki and made custom firmwares a thing of the past with its locked bootloader.
Also the S4 had so many bugs with any custom firmware. It was normal to get reboot hands where it got stuck on the S4 logo on boot and you would have to turn the phone on and off sometimes 5 times for it to boot. So annoying.
On top of that, the Camera sucked. Not sure if it was just the firmware ,or the camera itself. My S4's Camera (13MP) took worse photos than my iPhone 4S (8MP). In turn, my Nexus 5 now takes WAY BETTER photos than both phones even though it's only 8MP. The focusing, contrast and brightness and shutter speed adaptation is perfect (after 4.4.1 update which included a camera firmware update). HDR function actually works as well. The S4, in both Samsung based ROMS and AOSP roms would always take blurry junky HDR photos and I could never leave it on. Nexus 5 i have no problem taken HDR shots even from a moving car.
Overall I find the Nexus 5 to be a MUCH MUCH better phone than the Galaxy S4. For AOSP / Custom Rom support its hands down better, and camera. It's also slightly faster. (Talking 300mhz..not much). The only downfalls are:
1. Non removable Battery. I loved this on the S4. I had 3 batteries, one would be on a charger, and i'd carry a spare with me and just swap it out when needed so I never had to charge the phone. I could start out each morning with a fresh 100% charge without worrying about plugging in my phone at night.Battery life is the same as the S4. Just I liked that feature.
2. No SD card. Not a huge problem. I had a 32gb S4 and a 64gb microSD card. I thought I couldnt live without it but its fine. I just backup my phone to my PC once every few days just in case something happens. (I liked microSD so if the phone died, I still could get my photos). I got this, the Meenova USB OTG card reader. http://www.meenova.com/st/p/m3r.html Works great! I use it for TWRP backups / nanoids. I also use it to store seasons of TV shows, then copy them over to my phone half a season or so at a time as needed so I dont have to fill up my phone. Very handy.
3. Hardware buttons. I liked the S4's hardware buttons. I've gotten used to not having them, just a preference thing really.
4. Screen. The screen is the same resolution. You will get the same detail on it. However, you're comparing AMOLED to a regular LCD. The AMOLED on the S4 has more "vibrant" colors. It also had a slightly better viewing angle, and higher brightness and contrast in comparison to the S4 screen. Nothing major, however you will notice it if you're a detail freak.
That about sums it up.
All in all, I'm very happy with my switch from my Galaxy S4 to the Nexus 5 and I would do it again given the choice. Never buying another Samsung phone ever. Sticking with Nexus phones from now on.

Hi everyone ,
I am a longtime nexus user and my nexus 4 completely died out on me , and was wondering if the nexus 5 is still worth buying or if I should just buy the nexus 6. Does the nexus 5 still perform decently or does it have any performance problems similar to the 2012 Nexus 7? Screen size does not really matter to me, however the one thing was concerning me was that a lot of people report the nexus 5 as having a bad battery?
Does anyone know where would be the best/cheapest place to buy a Nexus 5? Thanks!
I brought my Nexus 5 16gb from my local CEX store for £165 and couldn't be happier its an amazing phone and after putting CyanogenMod 12 on it it's just amazing, fast and battery is good too ?
Worth it
The nexus 5 has a relatively physically small battery yes
Most people who report battery issues have literally no idea how to troubleshoot what is actually using the battery.....
Equally you won't read the equivalent number of threads who say they are satisfied with the battery. This is because the internet is for complaining....
It also mainly depends on how you use the device and what you define as 'good' battery life. The same logic applies to any device really.
Anyway personally I think it's still a solid device in terms of size, speed and value

i do not know my friend, im from philippines and the nexus 5 is still available from a trusted online store here in my country.
I currently own an iPhone 5s and have been a heavy iPhone user since the iPhone 3G. I was given the opportunity to get a 32 GB Nexus 5 for free from a friend who was sent two by Google for whatever reason last week. In the little time I have owned the Nexus 5 and not yet knowing the ropes behind it all, I can honestly say this is one of the best phones I have ever used. I surprisingly found the build quality to be way above what I expected, the software is amazing (it's the first Android device I have ever properly used) and the features that the phone has blew me away considering it is almost two years old. I mean, iPhone hardware upgrades nowadays offer a slight performance increase and higher resolution. I could never justify paying for an iPhone outright, but with the Nexus 5, I have no qualms about doing just that. I am seriously considering a more permanent switch to the Nexus 5 for the time being as it continues to meet my expectations. The only "issue" if you could call it that would be the battery issue that you may see arise every now and then. Whilst the Nexus 5 isn't the best when it comes to battery longevity, there are a range of things that you can do to mitigate it as much as possible to benefit you. After reading through a few topics it will not be a huge +10 hours, but any gain is a good gain right?
Of course my personal experience with phones in general isn't vast so my opinions can only really be between the iPhone and my short use of the Nexus 5, but before the iPhone I mainly used Nokia phones. The speed is quick (I don't like cluttered phones and pointless apps that you will not use often), it does everything I need it to and it's given me much more sway to using Google's suite and programs with the same (if not better) ease of use to Apple's suite. At least a lot more than I used to. I have been using Gmail since it started when the only way to obtain an account was via an invitation.
You will not be disappointed. And after using Nexus phones before you pretty much understand the way the phone works already. Whilst I'm a big fan of using the latest and best hardware/software, I cannot really speak for the Nexus 6. As for availability, there are a few places here in Australia that still stock the phone. It will just take a bit of looking around. Happy to help if it ends up being your handset of choice.

It depends on your preferences. Do you root, use custom roms etc? Is price a factor? In comparison to the nexus 4 it is an upgrade in all aspects.
Regarding your questions, there are no performance issues, the nexus 5 is a beast. It is faster than all other nexus devices nexus 4, 7, 7 (2013), with the exception of the nexus 6. Better screen, better camera and relatively better battery than the nexus 4. I get 3 to 4 hours of sot on 3g and 4 hours+ sot on WiFi (stock lollipop 5.1). In comparison, the nexus 4 would be dead in a couple of hours on 3g.
On the other hand, if software updates are not critical for you, there are other good value for money phones, like the lg g2, g3, sony z3 compact and motox 2. All these phones cost 350 euro or lower in my country, each with plusses and minuses.
Personally, I went from a nexus 4 to a nexus 5 recently and I don't regret it one bit.

The battery life is terrible. Other than that, it's pretty good. Just don't pay full retail for it. I would pay full retail price in November 2013 but not in 2015
Soon the first owners of the Nexus 5, which includes myself, will own their device for 2 years. This is often the timespan after which many users start looking for their next phone, since many mobile phone plans have a runtime of 2 years before you might be eligible for a new 'sponsored' phone.
What are you considering to be your next phone, are you waiting for the release of a certain model or are you still happy enough with the N5 to postpone this decision for a while?
Greetings,
Dirk

Was just getting the itch for a switch in the last few months. Battery life is compromised and I'm not a big fan of Android L. To further push the issue my screen looks pretty crappy after going swimming with the phone in my pocket last week.
I'd like to be able to wait and see what the 2015 Nexus 5 is going to look like but if I had to upgrade right now, I think I'd get the LG G4. Or if I wanted to go a cheaper route while waiting for a phone I'm more in love with to be released, I'd probably grab a used iPhone 5/5S off Craigslist.
Honestly with all the snapdragon 810 devices out there I am in no rush to switch. The 2016 chip lineup will be much better.
That being said, if my n5 breaks, and I need a new phone immediately, I'll either get another n5, or another sub $300 phone like the one plus one or xiaomi mi4.
I kinda wanted the xperia z4/z3+ but it would appear that having a toaster would be a better option with that stupid chip they've put in it

One of the reasons I got the N5 was to buy it off contract, so no 2 year update requirement. Luckily the phone will easily last 3+ with its excellent specs, performance and software support.
I'd be open to updating earlier if the next Nexus device is able to offer similar value as this device. Otherwise, all the devices in the last year have been disappointing (battery life going backwards, unnecessary "MORE PIXELS" upgrades, over heating issues and fragile designs) and no upcoming device looks to be changing that trend either.
I'm glad I haven't needed to buy a new phone recently because I would not be happy with my choices. Buying a Nexus 5 on launch day may just turn out to be the best, and most well timed, purchase decision of my life thus far. This is especially true as I had no idea what I was getting into at the time as I had never owned an Android device prior and there was zero reliable information available on launch day. A complete leap of faith.
Nexus 5 2015.
if the new nexus 5 got a decent prince and is near the size of the current nexus 5, the nexus 5 2015. If not, i wait for next year.

Yeah. Before i jump on the Nexus bandwagon, i was feeling let down (had samsung's phone) when each new phone had a new android version when mine was never updated. With the nexus 5, i look at new phone and think "meh".
Hopefully Nexus 5 2015, if the rumors are true. If not, I will probably wait another year (I was lucky, and get new N5 few days ago from RMA).
Might be the OnePlus Two or the next Nexus. The decision was way easier, if I knew, whether the next Nexus will feature the SD 820 or not.

Their insistence on using the 810 where all others have failed has made that a non-buy from me. I find it quite arrogant of them to think that they won't suffer from the same issues as other manufacturers are, and quoting Qualcomm's marketing (the COOLEST snapdragon YET! lol) isn't helping.
Unfortunately I imagine the next Nexus device to also be using the 810 since it will be heavily discounted. One of the reasons why I'm quite unimpressed with the latest batch of devices.
Eager to see what Google has to offer this year.

I've replaced 4 screens so far on my nexus 5 because I can't ever decide on a better 5 inch phone without branding on the front
Unless Motorola releases something like an updated Droid Maxx carrier-unlocked and with a monster battery, I'll likely be waiting for the new Nexus 5
I'd love to consider other phones but I find brand logos on the front way too tacky after being a longtime Nexus user and before that a Motorola user.
I've had the Nexus 5 since December 2013. Up until a few months ago I thought I'd never want a new phone for a couple more years.
Unfortunately recently my battery doesn't seem to last as long as it used to.
I'm waiting to see what this year brings; I'd love a Nexus this year but the battery has to be of at least 3000mAh otherwise a no go. Either that or I'll try to get my hands on an invite for the upcoming OnePlus 2.

I've always liked the appearance of Xperia devices (I seem to remember you from the Xperia S sub-forum). Along with the toaster chip, I'm not a huge fan of DRM restrictions placed on Sony devices when unlocking the bootloader (that is if you can unlock it.. My xS had non-unlockable BL).
Got my N5 in the first shipment as well. I was one of those watching Sony to see if the Z3+/Z4 was going to be great. Nope. I'm actually still happy with the N5 and am not really excited about anything out there right now. Waiting to see if the next ~5" Nexus is going to impress me. If my N5 died I'd probably see if I could hunt down another N5 or even MAYBE live with the size of an N6 while I await another smaller Nexus.
I have larger than average hands but I just can't see myself with a phablet and actually be happy with trying to jam that thing in all my pockets. The N5 is already borderline sometimes.

Yup, I used to have an XS! Lol. To be honest, I've been using android m. Completely stock and not having root hasn't bothered me at all. And i like the idea of waterproof, expandable sd and awesome camera
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I got mine on launch week. I am desperately awaiting the new Nexus. Battery life on my phone has been abysmal. I might pick up a Nexus 6 if I do not think what is released will last a full day. I'd just like something to last from 6am to 11pm without needing to charge under normal usage without having to turn anything off, or flash custom ROMs/kernels, fiddle with setting, etc. After a couple years in the modding game I'd just like a Nexus that works to my needs without having to mod or cripple the phone or fiddle around endless settings. Such a phone must exist.
So we all are basically having the same thoughts - unless we get a definite improvement in battery life and maybe camera and waterproofness, there is no real need to think about a new phone right now. After 2 years I am quite happy with my N5 and I feel no urge to find a replacement. A replacement should be an improvement - and I dont see big improvements over the N5 in any recent model.
Personally I love the openness of the Nexus devices, so my next phone will most probably be a Nexus again. But not the N6, because battery performance is the issue that bothers me most. So lets have a look at the N5 2015.

What you mean when you say you say you got a new N5 few days ago from RMA? That wasn't part of the free replacement program was it? I called about that a few days ago and they told me that service had been canceled in June.

Well, I did RMA my Nexus 5 at 4th of June in France, and they immediately sent me new (refurbished) device. Once I got it, I tested it, and after that I just sent them my broken phone, same process, as when I RMA me phone before.
I don't know, if there was some changes since then.
Hello.
Normally im using a oneplus two, but it lack of custom roms, is quite sad. I always wanted to try, ubuntu touch, firefox and sailfish os. And seeing, the nexus 5 got all these, and more custom roms, i have thought about buying it used, i were able to find a deal on aprox 120 - 150$.
So my question is, would it still be worth the purchase?
As a daily driver phone that you plan to use for a while? No, definitely not. It's notorious for horrible battery life, the hardware is aging, and it's highly likely that its official support from Google ends with Marshmallow.
As a device to play around with custom ROMs/Alternate OSes, or for development purposes? Sure, it's super cheap and has a lot of support in the dev community.

Well i don't wanna game, im only using facebook and snapchat.
I've had several Nexus 5s (one was stolen, one died and was replaced by Google) and I bought a spare one just a couple of months ago for £126 (about $160?).
The reason is that it continues to be a fantastic phone. Google don't support it? So what? It's a beautiful device. I would happily buy another for the price the OP suggests.
Yes, it's definitely worth buying.
Funny I came across this question. I was also thinking about buying a used n5 for about 115. My daily driver phone is a n6p. I had a nexus 4 that shattered and was left wanting a side phone to mess around with.

I would absolutely recommend the n5 as a cheap sub in. I've used one as my daily driver for years now and it still holds it's own. It has a neat form factor and screen size, and capable hadware. The development support is fantastic and I suspect it will be so for years to come.
Hi Everyone
I'm looking to upgrade from a Oneplus 3. Previously it was a great price for good specs.
I noticed the magic 3 whilst looking at YouTube and the specs look amazing.
1 - Interested to know of those who have had it for a while would you recommend getting it?
2 - what are the main annoying factors about the phone?
3 - Are there any others in the price range I should consider? I mostly play pubg, do retoo gaming and watch films with my existing phone
Many thanks in advance
Jamie
1 - Difficult to answer....if you're not into rooting and customizing, but happy with a basic Android experience and raw power, you should buy it......otherwise,if you want 100% flagship bells and whistless for half the price, you'll have to search futher,as this phone does not 'has it all' for just €479.
2 - For me,the most annoying thing is that there's much more to squeeze out of the camera,if Nubia's app would match the capabilities......but hopefully, there will be a working Gcam release in the near future.
3 - Xiaomi Mi 9....but I fell for the RM3.....
Many thanks for the reply, I don't mind rooting if necessary.
Also happy with a basic android experience as my oneplus was pretty much that when it first came out.
Thanks for the suggestion I will look into that also ??

Jamie

I can tell the battery backup is awesome. Only problem I have is the gaming buttons are too annoying when playing a video.
I have it unrooted without gapps and IMO its better then some flagships. Reason is the big screen and the big battery and the stereo sound.
Also I prefer metal over Glas backside. And NO Notch.
The camera is better than that on my Xiaomi mi mix 3.
this phone is amazing, the only bad thing i see it had is not hdmi usb-c to support
I would wait for two main reasons:
1) Asus is going to announce their new ROG phone at the end of this month. While it will probably be a good deal more expensive, It might have some cool features
2) Nubia just announced they are going to release an 855 Plus version of this phone.

Thing is,no matter how long you wait ,there will always be something better on the horizon after your purchase.......no matter which device you've bought...
Hi,
Considering the price and the specs, I think the Red Magic 3 is about the best phone you can have nowadays.
If you buy it, you should consider two things :
- Chinese UI has a lot of features but is ugly and themes are mostly paid ones ;
- Europe/US/Asia ROM has ZERO features.
Once I recovered from the disappointment, the second solution was clearly what I was looking for.
So here is my advice :
- take the Europe/US/Asia version and flash it to your device (if it doesn't ship with that as stock)
- unlock the bootloader
-root your phone.
All this is done in like 4/5 minutes...
Once done, install all apps to add the required features.
You will have a phone that has ONLY THE FEATURES YOU WANT.
No bloat, no unnecessary stuff...
A dream come true
Of course, it comes with a price : once rooted, you will get OTA notifications but won't be able to install them...
Regards.

True
If you live in North America, I'd steer clear of this company.
I ordered one of their phones last week. I still have yet to receive my shipping notice. I ordered it with priority shipping, and according to their website, it should have shipped within 24 hours of payment.
4 days after it failed to ship, I contacted support, and was told "Be patient". Ever since then, they've stopped responding to emails. They won't give me any sort of clue as to when my order will ship. Apparently this is a frequent occurrence with Red Magic.
They're one of those companies that are only interested in getting devices out to reviewers, everyone else is to fend for themselves.
The support page on their website doesn't work. Apparently they didn't pay for it. Nubia cannot give any answers either, they just argue back in forth in the support email with several of the employees arguing about who's job it is to deal with.
If you ever receive a phone from them, and have an issue, good luck with that. Their current company (if you can call it that) shows that can't deal with supporting their devices. They can't even deal with fulfilling orders.
Stay far far away from this company, for you own good.
Is there likely to significant difference between the 8gb and 12gb ram? I think I'm going to get it but wonder if it's worth the extra money. Also just seen they mentioned the magic 4 by the end of the year. So maybe prices will come down
Well I'm in N.A. and I bought it from the site day it released. Great phone, few bugs at the moment and its a gaming phone at heart with stock Android, easily customizable. Honestly any game task you throw at it handles like a boss. It's an emulation dream with built in buttons. My controller and case should arrive the 22nd and I'm sure it will be great. I can tell you any Bluetooth controller works well on it too. The choice to buy is up to you, basically do you want a gaming phone or something else.
I have had this for two days in the USA and I love it. Usually I have buyer's remorse and would be looking for a new phone by now so I can say it really is great. Battery life is better than my S9 with a Mophie pack so far. Even with playing with it constantly I can't kill it in one day and usually my S9 needs to be plugged in by late afternoon. I have not rooted it yet, and may not. I love a clean version of Android. Not sure why people think that is bad. All the random customization sometimes comes with a speed cost. This phone is just plain fast. Usually I root to get rid of crap so you can see where I stand. If you hate big heavy phones, don't buy it. That is the negative. I had a ZTE Axon 7 and updates were slow so that's another negative. Other than that, super fast, great screen, great battery, strong data signal...it's a buy. Reminds me of the original OnePlus, or the Axon. Phones that were surprising values, but were big and heavy.

I'm coming from the OnePlus 3(T) as well, looking for a new device. What I didn't like at the Oneplus were the original ROM (luckily Lineage helped a lot) and the sound and position of the speaker. I loved the front facing stereo speakers of my HTC One (m7) years ago.
So I'm thinking of purchasing the RM3, but at the moment there are no alternative ROMS. Another device I'm looking at is the Black Shark 2, but situation with ROMs and support seems to be even worse.
For the RM3, I have concerns, if a fan inside a mobile will really last for some years, or break down at some time...
I also had the 3T and 1 and the 6T obviously this is just a better phone due to the increases in tech. No way to tell on the fan, I will say...and not sure how ZTE vs it's company Nubia will work, but my Axon 7 had a couple of screen issues due to my dropping it and the speaker stopped working, not sure if it was due to that and ZTE fixed it every time free of charge within the first year. I was very happy with their service on that phone. ROM support will be lacking but it's a clean version of Android so I prefer that

To me...a clean, lean ROM, which the US version is, rooted with Magisk and other mods I choose myself is always the best option. Some custom ROMs can get pretty bloated themselves

It depends on what you are looking for an what you want to do?
If you are a person who is happy with stock ROMs an just leaves cellphones in the state they are in out of the box then yes buy it.
However if you are a person who likes tinkering modifications an custom ROMs the please do not buy this cellphone.
I tried to install TWRP over 2 months ago an got stuck in a fastboot bootloop. Every xda suggestion to fix this plus paying a cellphone repair center an trying heaps of suggestions an it's still non functional.
It has horrible software an is rediculously sensitive to any and all attempts to FLASH ANYTHING.
If red magic 3s break you might never be able to fix them at a software level.
Mine lives in a bag by my bed to remind me not to bite off more than I can chew.
I have a xiaomi Mi9 now an have no real issues with it.
Good luck with your decision
So the options are to buy on Ali are with a stock Global Rom or a Chinese ROM. I see some other posts about people flashing to the Chinese one. Is that the best option to choose? I take it you can still select the language as English and support here etc? Thanks for everyone's responded it's been really helpful. I was thinking of holding out for the 855plus but not sure if I can afford which will be most likely an additional cost for it.
I also have the same question but mine is a bit different. Im convinced i am going to buy it but...
Should i buy it now or wait for the 855+ version? Idc if its gonna be a bit more expensive

I would of thought it would be more expensive as they still have the original to sell. Probably will stick another £100 on it or so I reckon ?
