Annoying volume warning! - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Do all the Nexus 5 sold have the excessive volume warning nag screen or is it regional? On mine it seems to come up after a set period of use, even in the middle of listening to something, where the volume drops to half level and the nag screen pops up again. You can't raise the volume again until the nag warning is dismissed.
I know that in the EU at least, audio devices have to have this warning and some devices are artificially limited to a set volume. On my Sansa Clip MP3 player for example, if you set the language to English (Europe) you get the warning and the low volume, but you can get around it by setting the language to English (US). Other MP3 players sold in Europe don't even have this workaround.
Would changing the language on the Nexus 5 to English (US) have any negative affect and would it get rid of the nag screen?

That won't help

I'm in Canada and I have the same annoying (useless) warning from time to time...
Another reason to root...

ringtone volume starts out too low

I thought I had seen this discussed but can't find it.
When my phone rings the volume starts out low then increaes, is there a way to disable this and have it start at full volume?
I think it is melody? I believe that is the type of ring it is.
Huh?
It doesn't matter what I set the ringtone to. All the ringtones do the same thing for me
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I'd be interested in a fix for this also. I've done a little searching, but haven't been able to find anything other than it being related to a bug on other phones with a "quiet ring on pick-up" (or something like that) setting, which this phone doesn't seem to have...
Basically, the phone rings quietly for about a second at first then quickly jumps to a louder volume.
Yes I have this as well. It does not serve any useful function since you couldn't possibly answer before it gets loud.
I'm new to the android OS , so I'm going slow on tweaks but I had the same problem on a previous WinMo phone , the Samsung Omnia II and it drove me crazy. Eventually someone found out all you had to do was edit the registry and change a key from initial ring volume from 3 to 5 and it worked. I wouldn't be surprised if somewhere in the captivates db's there's a equivalent setting . Hope this helps and I'll post if I find the setting.
I hate this feature as well and want to disable it.
Anything new on this? It is driving me crazy!!
It seems to be a trend with Samsung phones...
I had an Eternity and it did this, which drove me crazy.
I also had a Sync, which is a flip-phone. It did not do this if the phone was closed but if the phone was in the open position before the call came in then this would happen.
I think it may be a Samsung "feature" in order to protect your hearing or something if you had the phone close to your head and a call came in. That's all that I can think of.. It's very annoying and I don't like it at all. It really makes me think this is probably intentional considering each Samsung I've had did the exact same thing. I haven't gotten a Captivate yet but I plan to, and it's very disappointing to see that it suffers from this as well.
Has there been any fix to this yet? ?

If you have never used the phone, why do you reply?
The volume will always start low no matter what ringtone you use. It is another stupid, unchangeable setting that Captivate has (much like the separate brightness setting for browser).
HTC has the opposite and more reasonable settting: volume starts loud and becomes low when you pick up the phone. You can disable it if you don't like.
I may be the only person who likes this behavior. If I forget to put it on vibrate mode during class, and it starts to go off, I can quickly hit the volume rocker (without taking it out of my pocket) before it disturbs the class.
would be cool to have a fix for this
Well, any fix yet? It pisses me off :[
I too find this super annoying....anyone have any success in changing it so it starts off at full volume?
I see the Perception 10 has:
Modified Phone.apk (no ascending ring)
I haven't tried P10, can anyone confirm there is not ascending ring?
just bumping this up!
I have perception 10 and mine seems to still have ascending ring. Maybe there's a setting I missed but I don't think so.

Sensation sound stops working?

I've got klaxon installed, a few other apps. Some morninga my alarm makes no sound at all. Reboot phone and it works again. Tried other alarm apps, it is the phonea sound, not just klaxon. hoping it's software related.
Anyone shed some light?

had same problem with sound ... especially when playing divx movies ... after a few minutes sound is gone ...
same issue with some games like talking tom cat ... after few seconds or minutes no sound ...
called htc about this issue .... they said the problem is known ... and it is a software issue ... we have to wait for an update for this
As long as it's known. Really giving me the ****s.

It's happened to me a couple times as well. I had my volume at full and received a text message and the phone only vibrated. Had to restart the phone both times to get sound back.
Happing to me to all the time ..
You Can Fix it by calling voice mail .. seems to work or reboot.
Its happing to me all the time now .. really getting pissy about it.
I had this problem too, as I use my cell phone for my morning alarm. I was using the stock alarm. It only vibrated instead of making any other sounds.
After setting the alarm to snooze, when trying to change any other sounds the display would only show Media Volume and nothing else. Even attempting to change the volume in the master Sound Settings didn't work.
Placing a call to voicemail did allow me to change the Notification volume after I hung up.
Someone on the T-Mobile forum says it happens after using Voice Search: http://forums.t-mobile.com/t5/HTC-SENSATION-4G/Speaker-issue/td-p/890855 I used Voice Search as a test last night and I did notice that after hitting cancel I didn't hear the tone, but I didn't think anything of it. I think my sound went out before I used Voice Search for the first time?
Hope this gets fixed soon.
At least I'm not crazy.....
I'm having the same issue, and while I wish it didn't exist, I'm SO glad to see others with the same problem! I thought I was losing my mind. And even more than that, HTC says it's a known issue? Do they have any idea what it's related to? Before I master reset my phone....
I called T-Mo this AM and they thought I was NUTS! This is a raging pain in the behind. Is there anything to do to "work around" this issue in the meantime?
I <3 my Sensation, but this is a sucky problem.
My audio cuts out if I use the In-Car mode for Vlingo with the SafeReader feature on. Tried it a few times just to be certain and then I have to do the inevitable reboot.
Uninstall talking Tom and problem goes away,I did that and haven't had problem since
I have to think it's a sense issue. No talking cat app here and my audio always cut out when playing my videos.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
Same here no talking tom app and happens all the time calling vm will bring back sound.
No sound when trying to play Pandora (or anything)...happened only twice. Rebooted and it worked, but not sure what caused it other than Sense?
After about a week I only had this issue once (the first day I got it). Every now and then I'll hit the volume buttons to make sure it doesn't say "media volume" so I'll be able to wake up in the am.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
just happened to me :/
A little while ago I lost all sound(ringtone-notification etc) I called VM and no go. I than rebooted and still no go I then pulled battery and rebooted and the sound came back on but very weak(too weak to begin with) I then did hard reset and it seemed to go back to normal. I have missed numerous phone calls lately and it now appears that the phone was not ringing. I am having other issues as well a the moment. I called CS retention dept and they are replacing it but claim that the volume issues are not known issues. I guess I should have called HTC instead, but I have 6 days left on buyers remorse and since this is my third one (first 2 were unusable) I have got to make a decision to keep one and wait for update or just return and get refund. I really do like this phone and would be very hard for me to return for refund but this is what I may have to do.

I agree with that. It may not be the only cause of the "lose all sounds" bug, but it's one of them. I was able to duplicate it over and over, and e-mailed HTCs tech support with the following:
Me said:
Hello. I would like to report a bug which can be replicated in the HTC Sensation 4G handset for T-Mobile.
On more than one occasion I have lost all audio from the phone including ringers, sound effects from applications, alarm tones, etc. When this happens, on the main screen the rocker switch on the side of the phone adjusts the "Media Volume" instead of the Ringer Volume as it should. The only solution I've found is to restart the phone.
I am able to duplicate at least one cause of this issue on a consistent basis. Pressing the magnifying glass button while inside of an application causes the "Speak Now" dialog box to appear. Pressing cancel returns me to the application that was running, but all sounds stop working.
Follow these steps to duplicate the issue:
- From the main screen, press the lower left button (to the left of the "Phone" button) on the screen to go to the "All apps" screen.
- Select the "Teeter" game app that comes pre-installed on the phone.
- Begin playing Teeter. While playing, press and hold the magnifying glass button next to the edge of the screen (I was pressing it by accident with my right hand as I was holding the phone to play the game).
- The Google "Speak Now" box pops up over the game.
- Press "Cancel"
- Resume the game
- Repeat the process of holding the magnifying glass button until the "Speak Now" dialog pops up, and press cancel again
- All sounds from all applications vanish, and the rocker switch only adjusts the "Media Volume" from the main screen. Restarting the phone is the only solution I've found to remedy the situation.
Please advise as to when this issue may be resolved.
Thank you,
Me

[Q] volume issue dell venue pro

so i have this great phone, i love wp7, it has thing's that i don't like but well nothing is perfect.. but what i really, let's say, hate is when i receive a phone call the volume is really low :S i have the phone wit the volume o maximun (30), the music sounds great, really loud but the phone call and even the alarm sound really really low, how can i fix that?
Phone call volume is controlled separately from everything else. While in a call, hit Volume Up and put it at max (the scale is different: in a call, it goes 1-10 instead of the normal 0-30).
If that's still not loud enough, I'm not sure what to expect. You could try using earbuds or a headset. On my HD7, I have to set call volume down to 5 when using earbuds or it's painfully loud. Bluetooth headsets often have their own volume control too, and can push the call higher if the phone doesn't go high enough.
There are some registry controls that affect volume, but I don't think anybody had managed to get any write access to the DVP registry yet.

thanks for the answer man, but i think i don't explain myself very well xD i'm talking about the ringtone from when you're getting a phone call you know? That's the volumen i'm talking about that it is kinda low, and is the same with the alarms..i hope you can understand me now haha..and i have another question since you answer my previews one you know a way or and app to change the colors of the live tiles? Because the colors that came with the OS are, let's say, short haha
Ah... yeah, I really wish I could set the ringer volume independently of the music-and-so-forth volume. BTW, alarms will always (by design) start at low volume, then get louder over the course of about a minute. I tend to set the base volume high before going to bed anyhow, but I've forgotten to a couple of times and it still wakes me up within a very short time.
Adding custom accent colors is another thing that requires registry access. In theory, there's a registry editor built into the EM app. So far as I know, nobody has gotten it to work, though. It's a real pity, that is; with a built-in regedit, the phone could easily be dev- and interop-unlocked, opening up a lot of homebrew potential.

[Q] Sound

Hi, as everyone know, there are 3 different volume in our nexus 5.
First is Music, video, games & other media.
Second: Ringtone & notification.
Third: Alarm.
Usually if I'm in class, I would press the volume down button until I'm at vibration mode. Then sometimes when I got bored in class and start playing with my phone, the volume will be very loud when i forgot to turn off the sound for games when i was looking at some youtube video or playing some games.
This is really annoying. What's the point of changing to silent mode when there is still volume at the games or video? I know iphone have the toggle for silent mode and that is seriously way useful than this.
You can always install expandable volume controls via xposed or custom ROM.
I know it is frustrating and an overlooked feature I think. When I first got my nexus 5 I was like come on guys you didn't fix this?

Yeah I have the same issue with the sound on this like the OP. Been using 3rd part apps like Llama and Silent Scheduler to quickly change/view sound settings from notification drawer. Works well but I wish something like this built in the OS.

Have you ever run into a bug where you set a task to change the media volume to 8 or higher automatically, upon connecting headphones? It seems half the time it gets stuck at 6 or 7, presumably because the volume level warning message never gets its chance to show up.

No actually I haven't had a chance to program tasker that much yet. The only task I have set for it so far is to play the TF2 medic sound byte "I am fully charged!" when my battery level gets 100% when charging
I know this isn't quite the answer your looking for as far as just turning the volume down to disable all sounds but just some suggestions... I use expandable volume control and You could go into settings/profile and set a quiet profile or go to settings/sounds and set quiet hours.

Call quality

When you call granny, does she keep saying "Huh?! Wut?!" or does the conversation flow pretty well? Rate this thread to express how you feel about the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7's call quality. A higher rating indicates that calls are clear and crisp, and that regardless of background noise, you can hear the other party clearly (and with ample volume) and they can hear you.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Works great, even on speaker.
Earspeaker has loud, full sound. Speaker phone is loud and clear as well with good mid-range.
Very good sound for a mid-range phone
The Call Quality is way below abysmal at best!
Hello gents
Just a quick review to report some findings for MIUI_LAVENDEREEAGlobal_V11.0.4.0.PFGEUXM_:
It takes only a quick phone call to realise that:
The ring volume, the notifications volume and the in-call volume are extremely low.
Trying to boost the volume for the in-call volume does ABSOLUTELY nothing at all to improve the situation.
Assuming you are in a PERFECTLY QUIET, NOISE INSULATED OFFICE ROOM, then, yes you can have a conversation with the other person on the other.
However, the moment you set foot outside that becomes impossible.
You can reproduce the bug by following these steps:
Step one: Dial a contact's number (that is to say call someone using THE PHONE and not any of the VOIP apps)
Step two: start the conversation
Step three: step outside on a noisy street and experience your awfully low volume for in call
Step four: have the other person call you or text you on a moderately noisy street ,and then on a busy, noisy street (like those in UK) where noise levels exceeds 60-70 decibels on a daily basis.
Step five: Finally realise how inadequately low the volume is indeed.
Step six: Realize you have bought a pretty much useless device which is pretty much unusable when you are trying to use it a s PHONE and not to catch bloody Pokémons or play Angry Birds.
Expected results when receiving a phone call: Have a clear and loud ring volume at minimum 85dB -100 dB which is the necessary value to hear the incoming call ring when the phone call take place on the street.
Expected results when making a phone call: Have a clear and loud volume for STREAM_VOICE_CALL the at minimum 85dB -100 dB which is the necessary value to hear the other person when the phone call take place on the street
Actual results: The values for STREAM_VOICE_CALL ,STREAM_RING,STREAM_NOTIFICATION (That is to say the phone call volume ,the phone ring, and the notification volume) are WAY BELOW the EU-wide safety limit on volume levels of 85dB .
Citties are noisier than the quiet office rooms. For example in London where I live the noise levels exceed 60 decibels ON A DAILY BASIS.
Therefore the current settings are wrong.
I tried each and every OFFICIAL AND UNOFFICIAL roms out-there and they are all plagued by the same problem.
These settings can be found across Chinese ,Indian, European, Global and basically, every other roms produced by Xiaomi.
It is clear the developers have not done their job properly and they have not tested the phone IN REAL LIFE CONDITIONS as they should have been doing it.
Coming from my old Sony Xperia SP where the ring volume , the notification volumes and the incall volume was good enough you could use the phone on the street this was a shock for me.
All those reviews rating the Xiaomi as good they are either biased or the guys did a sloppy job in reviewing the phone.
Kind Regards
Wow sorry to hear your experience with it is this bad.
Definitely return your phone or have it serviced.
Sounds defective

Lol. I've having the complete opposite experience. Phone calls and volume in general are pretty good on stock, then signal strength and notifications vol went ape **** on custom Q roms (just the minimal protect rom worked perfectly) and kind of tricky on other P roms.
There's something weird about redmi kernels, not the OS at itself. But it sound like you have a damaged phone. Try to return it or send it to service. ?
sound and speaker is perfect on this phone, some roms have issues but stock miui is perfect.
Unfortunately,i don't have anymore a granny but for all other, the ringtone ,the notifications and speaker are loud and clear
What rom version are you on? EEA, Global, India, China? Xiaomi EU (which is based on the Chinese version) ?
The ringtone the notifications and the in-call volume are all low. The call quality on all these roms is abysmal.
Unless you install a custom ringtone and notification sound designed to be loud the default ones are ridiculously low.
Not only that but the "Volume Booster" does nothing at all to boost the volume.
Somebody messed up big time.
I have tried to mod the mixer path files. Not much difference but it does make it slightly louder. Not as loud as it should have been after manually altering the volume curves for the attenuation (the max value was set to 15000 Millibels which should have popped up the volumes to 150 dB) . All the other settings done in the mixer path files barely had an impact (not surprisingly since Xiaomi hardcoded capped values for incall , notification and ring streams in the source code of the libraries and kernel i think)
The EU laws allows a maximum of 85dB , but these guys they took it on themselves to lower the values WAAAAAY BELOW that.
When you are watching a movie , listening to audio-video content like YouTube and so on, the speakers are OK.
When it comes to using the phone AS A PHONE making phone calls and receiving phone calls and text messages using the phone and messaging function (NOT VIA THE VOIP apps) the phone is absolute crap.
Let me put it this way:
My Nokia Nokia 3210 has such a loud incall volume that if i pop up the volume to the max , people standing 3 meters away from me can hear the other person talking to me.
When it comes to ring tone for the incoming calls and the notification sound for the incoming messages, I can hear that bugger from 30 meters away.
There is no way in the hell you can not hear a Nokia 3210 running on 1999 primitive technology.
Xiaomi really dropped the ball on this one and their devs effed up big time.
They could not be bothered to test the phone in REAL LIFE CONDITIONS and as a result, in noisy cities like London whilst out on the street you end up not hearing incoming phone calls , text messages and so on.
If left with the default settings and default ringtones you might as well be hearing impaired because it makes no difference whatsoever.
Let me put it this way so young guys can understand what i mean:
A Nokia 3210 running on 1999 technology with a basic, primitive operating systems and PRIMITIVE HARDWARE for speakers and with only a tiny fraction of the Xiaomi's processing power HAS BETTER incall quality than Xiaomi's phones .
Is not a hardware problem but a deliberate handicapping move designed to limit the performance of it audio output.
And they took it way too far. Now the phone is so handicapped that you can only use it to catch pokemons or watch youtube videos.
When it comes about making and receiving phone calls, that is to say , using the phone as a phone... You are better off with a Nokia 3210.
So yeah, there's that.
An amazing phone with amazing hardware ruined by poor coding and devs laziness (or their inability of understanding that in these times and age there are still people out there who would like to use the phone as a phone )
