Been losing sleep trying every way possible to reformat my micro sd card, but the data is like a phoenix...no matter how I delete it, it comes back. I partition it using disk utility, and the next time I boot it up it has all my old data on it. I delete all the data off the card, empty trash, and it comes back. I use root explorer to delete, it comes back. I even downloaded a program and let it reformat and rewrite over the data, which took about 5 hours, and it all comes back...right after I did it, I checked the card in disk utility and it said it was formatted to exfat and it had 63.XX gigs free...but I go to my phone and the data is back...sorry, I'm rambling..
The craziest thing is that all the data, from what I can tell, is readable. My phone can play all the music off the external card and I can pull backups from nandroids using titanium...I first noticed this when I was trying to backup to my external using both twrp and cwm, but the backups wouldn't stick. I try and delete backups, they come right back.
Oh, the card is formatted as fat32 and is a speed 10 64gig. The card worked for about 8 months, then this happens..
WTF?

Bump.. If anyone has any insight...it'd be much appreciated..
I was thinking that this problem coincided with when I switched from notta's PA to pacman... Could it be possible the_only_ way I'll be able to modify the data would be flashing back..? I guess I could give that a shot...
Edit: well, that didn't work. Glad it actually went smoothly, though..

This happened to me a while ago as well. I had a 64GB Sandisk card.
Same symptoms. Data readble but can't delete or modify the card. I finally realized that the card is toast and sent it in for RMA with Sandisk.
I think you need to replace your card.
Have you tried writing 0s to it? Use something like EaseUS partition Master

okay, so i've found myself in a bit of a pickle. Recently I've been running the CM7 nightly's, but today I tried out the RoyalGinger rom and I believe it either corrupted my SD card or it's blocking my SD card from being used/read.
Tried several times to reformat it but each time it said 'checking SD card', but the weird thing is I have an active wireless connection, but I'm not getting texts. I can download from market, get on Facebook, etc, but my texts won't come in until I reboot the phone. A few times I booted it up and it wouldn't allow me to even see my homescreen because it'd pop up with EVERY app force closing (including google services, framework, etc), I was able to get back to my homescreen by clearing by Dalvik Cache luckily, however I'm still unable to do most anything. I went in to wipe/restore but it says cannot find SD card, directory invalid, cannot mount, etc.
Is there a way to reformat my SD card through terminal? If so could I get the code procedure for it? or anyone have any ideas other than picking up a new micro (which isn't a big deal but I'm strapped on money til Friday) but i'd still prefer to know that it's JUST my SD card and not my phone memory. Anyone? Anyone? Beuler? Beuler? Thanks in advance. I'm really sorry if I posted this in the wrong section, but c'mon, everyone gets one.
Ok so do u have a stock backup rom? Ide say go to rom manager and go to recovery and whipe etc.. Then install that stock back on it.....And can ur sd card even read at all? Just get any.file manager and check your sd.

I think I have a backup rom of CM6, but not an actual android stock rom. It won't allow me because it says 'must have an SD card inserted' then it says must have clockwork mod recovery installed, which I do, the current version. Now that it says that I'm afraid to boot my phone into recovery, and I can't really tell if my SD card will read. I was able to use my file manager and the entire SD folder is blank.
ten minutes later: still boots into recovery, none of my backups are available on it. I was thinking about downloading a rom from the phone and trying that way, but I don't know if it'd save to the (apparently unreadable) SD card.
Ok try this...... Find out what recovery you use 3.0.0.5 or the normal 2.5.1.4 for froyo then download a rom thats the same recovery as the one u have on it right now...... If its the same as your cyanogenmod 6 then install that from the recovery manually!!!
if its not then download a rom that is and make sure you use a file manager to see if the download sticks in your sdcard. And if it doesnt stick then......your problem sir might be a corrupted sdcard, or a phone that cant read your sd.
Hope its not either or, so give it a shot.....
And ur supposed to have a stock backup as soon as you root and switch roms man Lol makes life easier

It sounds like he doesn't have access to his sdcard. It doesn't matter how many backups you make if that's the case...
If you happen to have a sdcard reader or a microsd usb adapter you could format it in windows, copy the files you need, and start again. Also did you try connecting to your pc and seeing if it's readable that way? You can format the card if your pc recognizes it. If you have adb set up you can push the recovery image to the phone without a sdcard. But once again without a working sdcard you won't be able to flash a new rom.
Hey guys I'm pretty sure it's just my SD card. I tried saving an image, just to test it and it says 'an SD card is required to download images.bin', so I'm HOPING it's just my SD Card, however my notifications are working properly so I can at least deal with it til friday, if it IS my SD card reader in the phone, well... I have a plan for that, however due to already technically breaking that I shouldn't go into it. Thanks to you guys for taking the time to post and if you know anything else that might help me I'd gladly accept it.

Hi, I have a reader on my laptop but not the adapter, so I can't tell and yes, you were right, I can't see any of my backups (which I have my stock, then cm6 and cm7) so I either need to find an adapter or get a new SD card. luckily I pulled all of my camera images off my phone last night when I put the new rom .zip on the phone sd, so I'm not really worried about 'losing' anything as long as I get my phone working back in proper condition.
Well that happened to me before as well.. All i did was replace sd cards lets the phone do its thing flash a different rom like CM6 or CM7 and then once replaced i got the adapter for my old sd card reformatted through windows and put it right back in and it worked.. So try that?
Ill have to. Thanks a lot guys I do appreciate any comments and suggestions and ill be picking up a new sd later thia week to fix it but can amyone recommend a good brand sd to pick up? the apparently failed one was a samsung 8gb

I usually use sandisk so yeah try that?
Something similar happened to me. Your SD card likely has a bad or corrupted file. I used Win7 to copy over what I could to a folder in my PC. The Win7 automatically refused to copy over the corrupted files while carrying over everything else. In XP, your file transfer stops and you have to try again to ensure you have everything that's not corrupted transferred over.
After copying, I just went ahead and formatted the SD to FAT32, transferred everything back, installed on my phone, and voila.
Go into recovery and partition the card. You'll lose everything on it but it should be useable after that

so my phone deleted everything off of my sdcard and you know how your pics and everything is litterly like your world or life. how can i restore all my files? or am i totally f'ed?
i was also wondering is there something for your phone like how your computer can be restored to a date before. is there a way or program to do this to your phone and micro SD memory card??
please help me i really dont wanna have to redo everything on my sdcard again):
If the card was wiped its gone and I don't think the phone makes restore points like a computer does. Best you can do is back up your rom periodically but that wont bring back the SD card data.

I'm not sure how your phone would've done that; that usually requires a deliberate action. Unless you somehow converted the filesystem on the sdcard, it should be a VFAT filesystem. Basically the filesystem from Windows 95, 98, ME, etc. I can't think of an easy way to recover that. There might be a tool out there to do it.
Hopefully someone else has a better answer.

Ouch. I'm afraid the data's probably lost, man. If it partitioned the card it probably wrote a new partition table. There might be some file recovery utilities you can run from Windows to try and recover the files but I don't know how successful they would be.
I thought I read somewhere there was an app to retrieve old deleted data from a sd card somewhere in these sgs4g forums. a guy did almost the same thing and said he got most of it back, try searching some key words

Given that it got re-partitioned, though....
Unless you do a Full Format, or fill the card with new files, most of the time when stuff deletes, the index information is removed or something like that, and it's just invisible, until it's overwritten. So if you can find a recovery program it should be able to find the data. Last time I looked there weren't many free ones, but it's worth a google search.
I agree with goddi2010. I also remember reading that one of our members had a similar problem and was able to recover lost data. He even mentions what he did/used to recover the data.
Somewhere in our forum the help you need is there. Good luck searching and when you find the info please let us know how it worked out for you...
Sorry I can't be more specific.
I just used the program Recuva ( it's free ). Install it on your computer and plug your phone in or put the card in a reader then run Recuva and select the quick scan and it will bring up everything that has been deleted and it will tell you if it can recover it or not. It has work for me multiple times.

Hi,
I'm trying to root my spyrocket using this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340526 and during the back up it is frozen on "backing up system..". I know it said to be patient but its been over an hour and now I'm getting worried. Any suggestions?
Restart and try again. Backing up won't change anything about your system. It only "reads". Should be fine.
Edit: however...never never ever turn off your phone during "ANY" type of write or flash.

tried that
But it still keeps freezing up during the system backup? Is it the size of the sd card? Its 2GB

Have you tried mounting the internal sdcard before doing the back up?
yea Its mounted, it gives me the option to unmount it so i dont think thats the issue. Everytime I try to back it up it leaves files on the sd card so I know its transferring to the card. I might try formatting the card and see if that helps.

How much space do you have free? Or is it the 2gb with nothing else on it?
Ive had backups larger than 2gb.
But I've also never gotten touch clockwork to finish a backup. It freezes on me.

Are you sure it is not the known ".hidenandroidrogress" problem?
While doing backup either in system or data backup hangs forever
Backups take like 750mb. After you format a 2gb card, that's about half of it. Make sure its empty. Or better yet, backup to internal storage and transfer. Just don't backup to internal then format, that's no good.

i'm running Clean rom 5.0
it worked before on Stock and Liquid smooth RC7 and RC8
no one? come on...
All I can say is try a clean install see if that fixes it, probably not that helpful but worth a shot.
You may want to backup everything to a computer in case this sd card fails on you. You should reformat the sd card (to Fat32) and see if this resolves your issue.

After doing a hard reboot, there is a 50% chance the phone will soft reboot again within 5 minutes if I don't clear the cache/dalvik. After doing a soft reboot, my SD card is not recognized and then I have to hard reboot... You see my problem. Do you have any suggestions on what to do so I don't have to clear my cache/dalvik every time I need to reboot? Thanks!
I am running CM 13 Nightlies
Try to reboot your Phone without your SD Card. Maybe your SD is faulty. If your Phone is working ok without SD, then Backup your Data on your SD in PC, format it to FAT32 and try again to reboot with SD Card.

You can still try rebooting your phone without the SD card to test it. Some of the apps may not appear but that's about it. Be sure and turn your phone off before removing or inserting the SD card. I would suggest using the phone to change the card back to a removable media card before putting it in the PC to format.
Just a few questions before I do anything. Will reformating my SD card wipe all its data? Can a FAT32 formatted SD card be used as adoptable storage? Will a FAT32 formatted card be able to have a swapfile on it? I use a ram expander

Yes, formatting the SD card will wipe all data on the card.
No, a FAT32 card cannot be used as adopted storage, only a card adopted by the device can be, that process formats the file system as an encrypted ext4 system.
Maybe, but I'm not sure Android normally use a swap file, so you might have to make some manual changes which would be overwritten every time you flash a nightly build.
TBH, the RAM Expander is probably your whole problem, the low processing power and I/O speeds of the device plus using an SD card are probably causing delayed writes and extreme lag and cache corruption. You should have at least a UHS3 card, even then I would suspect the RAM Expander is the root cause of your problems.

Try another rom then... CM is hardly the only option, and some devices do better with different ROMs.
Otherwise, give us something concrete like a logcat or something.

Ok I'll upload a logcat as soon as I get it to break again.
Here is a logcat I got. I'm not sure if I caught the first failed reboot but it soft rebooted a good 3-4 times so hopefully there's something worth looking at. Thanks for your help!
BTW - it's in a zip because it's exceeds the file limitations for .txt files on xda.

I did a quick glance though the file, I'm at work and will look through it more later, but two things stuck out to me... there seems to be a lot of package errors, and the theme is not happy.
When is the last time you did a clean install, and then reinstalled your apps from the Play Store (not restored from TB or similar app)? Also, does the problem still occur when you use default theme?

I did a clean install about a week ago (and reinstalled my apps from the Play Store). I haven't tried it with the default theme but I can do that this afternoon.
Just rebooted with the default theme and it booted up fine but then i rebooted with my previous theme and it also booted up ok so basically idk if its the theme yet.
