[Q] AT&T users. - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Love the Nexus 5. By far the perfect phone. But my question is does anyone get any drop signals? At times my data will just go completely blank then come back. Could be the my area. But just had to ask.

No problems with AT&T in SE Michigan.

Well it could just be the area that I am. The wife has a iphone 5s and she gets none of the drop calls.

No issues with me in STL.

I definitely think that the signal is a bit worse than it was on my One X. It tends to drop completely in areas where my One X had marginal signal but still connected. I'm in Northeast Florida.

I've actually had this the last few days, a split second of no service and then back to normal. This is in thy southwest and west suburbs of Chicago.

I notice the signal strength shows low (2-3 bars lower) compared to my old S4 but when I make a call it jumps to max. Could this be a battery saving thing?

Just to be clear you did not flash any custom roms with radios or anything right?

No issues here. I travel weekly for work and so far I can say no issues in the following areas:
Lexington, KY
College Station, TX
Atlanta, GA
Houston, TX
Knoxville, TN
Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if it is just AT&T and in your area. I carry a Verizon Galaxy S4 and my Nexus 5 on AT&T around. I can consistently get awesome coverage and 25-35mbit speeds on my Verizon phone. Sometimes I question if AT&T data is even working, and a speedtest will show only 5mbit down. I know its not the Nexus 5 because I can have other random people I am with on AT&T do speedtest on various phones and have the same issue.

I work in central Mass, and the signal in my office is horrid... for LTE. If I force it to only use HSPA+ (Settings > More... > Mobile Networks > Network Mode > 3G) I have full service of HSPA+ and no dropped signals. Coming from an HTC One (where there are like... 25 bars to display signal) I'm thinking it's just an aesthetic change for me mostly.

2 biggest battery drains are screen and radios. Newer radio chips are much better at conserving juice. And why turn up the radios if you don't need them. S800 soc has a lot of battery saving features, and newer lte chips use a lot less juice.
In other words, yes, that's a battery saving thing.
Coming from a gnex, this has great battery life, and has double the cores and clock speeds, and a graphics chip that compares to a lower end pc add in video card. Gotta love that technology!

Sprint reception getting worse ?

This week my signal in a formerly decent area has become atrocious.

Has anyone else experience this?

I've seemed to notice that my 3G signal has been dropping to 1G often on my drive home (from Queens NY to Suffolk County)... maybe Sprints doing some work?

Its a trend. 1-2 years ago I got 1.5-2 Mbps on average since then its been getting progressively worse on any phone I try.

I was having similar issues in Fairfield County. The Guy at the Sprint store told me they were doing a ton of tower work in the area and it has been causing issues. He said it was suppose to be done by the end of April. We will see.

I have been experiencing this with whatever phone I've had (Palm Pre, Epic, Nexus) here. It was just FLAKY with the Pre, but the Epic and Nexus recently my 3G has been the pits. It will show I have full bars and my phone will crawl. Called Sprint and they said there is a "outage" in my area and that they were working on it.
My company gives discounts for people on AT&T, and if this keeps up it might be time for a change...........I hate the idea of having tiered data but what's the point of having unlimited usage that I CAN'T USE?

If you switch, take a look at TMo. They are great here and their pricing/data plans are good.
ATT speeds are good here too, I have them but am grand fathered into unlimited data. Don't know if I'd recommend them to a new customer.

Yeah I'm in NY as well and have been facing atrocious signal issues. Manhattan works fine including some parts of Queens, but once I head out into Long Island, forget about it, I see my bars drop to one, to none, and sometimes 1x.
Sprint is pushing out the update, just confirmed the release date to be the 25th. Hopefully, this will solve the signal issue that so many of us wishes to be finally resolved.

North NJ here and my signal is horrible..... sprint 3g is the worst...i had Verizon b4 i came over to sprint 2 months ago and boy do i regret it...
Same here in Stockton, CA. Been getting weak signal and when I use data it actually looks like my signal drops a bit.
I average speeds of .5 megs. Which is just terrible compared to other carriers.
BTW dont use the speedtest app from the market. Its borked, use a test through the web browser.

I agree... I live in Clifton, NJ and work in Woodcliff Lake, NJ. At work, I no longer get reception at all unless I'm roaming, when last year I had full signal.
At home, I had to get an Airave because I never have more than half my bars, this also used to be full.
i'm not getting reception at all right now and i normally have full bars inside my house.
On top of that when i do get reception, the white bars never turn green so i can't even call my voicemail WTF
Same for me in san. Diego CA. I hope they get this fixed soon. If not they better refund us the amount of money we paid for they're "premium data plan" that we can't even use.

To add to it,
In CT I'm in an area with "Good/Fair" coverage, or whatever. I hardly get enough of a data connection at home to load the facebook app.
The past few days, however, I've seen my phone on 1X a lot, and even no service at all for extended periods. But I'm wondering if it's from Sprint or from the latest nightly I just flashed. >_>

T-Mobile US One S data connectivity known issue

T-Mobile acknowledges a known issue with data connectivity on the One S:
http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-4288
I'm guessing this is the same issue others have reported on the EU One S(wherein the data indicator jumps back and forth between H and 3G and takes ages to load), but the T-Mobile US software, like on all their recent phones, is modded so the indicator will only ever say 4G.
Reviewer has also stated that using EU-based ROMs on the T-Mobile US One S will cause "data bugs," so I'm wondering if this is what he is referring to. If it is, the bug appears to exist in both the T-Mobile US ROM and the EU ROM.
Has anyone had this issue in their T-Mobile US One S? What are your experiences? I've mostly been at home and on wifi since I got the phone a few days ago.
I had an issue with using an EU rom and the data switching back and forth from H and 3G. I reverted to stock nandroid (provided by reviewer) and haven't had an issue with switching between 3G and 4G while at work. As with you I am on Wi-Fi at home so I'm not too sure if I am affected. But I do know that while I was on the EU rom I had drastic drops in signal and network speeds as compared to the stock rom.

Interesting. I am using stock US T-mobile, as of yet unrooted because I might take it back. Connectivity is soo spotty. I have not contacted t-mobile yet because I want to collect as much info as possible. It's either 4g or nothing, that's true. And often, it's nothing. My old 3g phone would drop to edge and stay connected. This one will just drop the connection and that happens to often.
I've been using the One S for about a week and zero issues. My residence is only covered by edge but Park City and Salt Lake City I get solid 4g with zero drops or hiccups.

I don't have any data problems only time I see it low is when I turn it on it goes from 2g 3g to 4g. I haven't encountered any problems yet other then WiFi dropping then reboots when I try to reconnect
Sent from my HTC One S using XDA
I'm affected. Many times when I open the browser to search for something, I'll get the No Data Connection window pop up, even though status bar shows 3G or 4G. I close that, reload the screen, try again and it usually works. It's as though it fails to hook up to the network until it tries a few times.
I dont really have data drop issues. My 2 issues are that it switches from hspda to umts periodically, but that doesnt affect data.
I have a concern though that I feel like reception is poorer on this phone. my gs2 would hold a better signal. In fact on the gs2 i never dropped calls, whereas on the one s i had a few.
Can a radio update fix this?

u think a radio fix can correct an issue with one handset getting a stronger signal than another? isnt that a hw issue?

What? You're comparing two different devices. A radio issue can cause lower signal so a radio update can give you more signal.

I just performed one, and got the delay/interrupt, my results were:
Download: 110kbps
Upload: 710kbps
A previous attempt last week netted 9102 down, 2065 up....that was obviously WITHOUT the bug.
I am near Chicago First let me just say for some reason my reception really never goes past 3 bars and sometimes I have none at all in places the sgs2 would have plenty dont know if this is just me...but man when data is good its phenomenal I have got up to 25mb down and 3 up but the interruptions in reception and data kill that pretty bad..so I am very torn about this phone I hope it isn't hardware related because the EU version has the same bug..
Same here most of the time I only have a max of 3 bars and I noticed sometime when I have all bars when i pick it up I lose a bar or two
Yes, phone does have connectivity issues. I live in New York and my previous phone would never go down one single bar on 4G, except in my job where my 4G goes down to 2 bars.
Now my bars go up and down like waves and jumps from 4G to 3G constantly, and in my job I just get 2G. It really sucks. Let's hope it's fixed with a hardware update and that it's not the actual chip.
Experience is exactly as you specify. Stock Rom always displayed 4g....custom Roms flip between 3g, h and I even saw an e today?!
Although time with stock was limited...I do believe, whether just a label or not, seemed data was faster with stock. Regardless....no complaints.

I don't think I have ever had a phone with Tmous where this wasn't a problem. I just figured it was T-mobile's network kicking me off so I wouldn't hog all the bandwidth. In other words, every smartphone I have had with tmobile has had this issue.

Verizon GSIII signal levels

Can anyone coming from a thunderbolt, bionic, razr, or resound give me a comparison of signal levels on LTE?
My rezound currently I sit around -90dBm in my house and sat about there with the other phones listed. When I had the gnex I sat about -110dBm if I could even keep 4G.
Anyone who can give me a signal level in the same spot with both phones would be awesome.

Hope someone with a Rezound or RAZR chimes in soon.
I wish I could tell you.
My friend with a Droid Charge complains about poor signal, but my Galaxy S3 gets amazing LTE reception. I have yet to drop off the 4G network except when I leave the city.
I will see how it compares to his directly today.
not sure in comparison of other 4g phones, but my 4g signal has been really good in Centennial, Colorado (south of denver)
My phones as of 2223 EST
SGS3 -75 dBm 8 asu
Nexus -83dBm 2 asu
Well this guy's post comparing to his wife's RAZR is giving me hope again. Hmmm.
Sorry I didn't see this earlier. I came from the thunderbolt and can tell you that I normally was at -80 to -90 dbm 4g at my house, my sg3 won't get 4g here and sits at about -95 dbm 3g. Went to the store, got a new SIM, no change. Called tech support, got to level II support and was told to pull the SIM and reboot (eye roll) No change. I'll hang on and see what kind of"fix" comes out for it, if you recall the thunderbolt had a very similar situation at launch. We'll see what happens. Good luck.

Not sure what to expect. Everyone seems to be near a 50/50 split. Just going to pick the phone up Tuesday and see what happens.

Same issue here (low 4g signal/4g disconnect). Battery life is terrible because of it. Replaced my SIM as well. No change. Might swap the phone to see if that helps. I'm so fed up with this. Don't feel that this is much of an "upgrade".
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
As promised, I have an update. I went to the VZW store and they swapped out my SIM card. No change. The same issues I described in the OP were encountered.
I've performed the following testing to help determine if my specific phone had an issue or whether it was just the LTE service in the area. This isn't the most extensive or scientific test, just a quick and dirty test.
The procedure was as follows:
-Compare phone signal strength in Settings -> About Device -> Status (within phones approximately 5 feet of each other)
-Compare speed test results using the SpeedTest.net app
My office:
1 person in my office also has a vzw galaxy s III. We are running the same stock system.img (I535VRALF2).
- On average, his signal strength was -88dbm, mine was -84dbm. Definitely within normal range for a decent LTE signal.
- His speed test results were similar to mine (within 10% for each direction)
1 person in my office has a Droid Razr (non MAXX) running ICS (important as ICS measures signal strength differently than GB).
- On average, his signal strenth was -95dbm, mine was -91dbm.
- His speed test results were very different than mine:
GSIII - 66ms ping, 8.5MBit down, 12.2MBit up
Razr - 61ms ping, 18.9MBit down, 9.1MBit up
A friend's house:
My friend also has a vzw galaxy s III. We are running the same stock system.img (I535VRALF2).
- On average, his signal strength was -104dbm, mine was also -104dbm. A fairly poor LTE signal.
- Our speed test results were similar (approx 4MBit down, upload was intermittent (would sometimes stall out) approx 0.5Mbit up)
VZW lists 4g coverage as "Verizon LTE (non-extended)" in both areas.
Conclusion:
The difference I encountered between my GSIII and the Razr was alarming, but again, this wasn't the most scientific test (and anyone familiar with the speed test app will tell you that it's usually best to run it several times (unfortunately, I was pressed for time). Just wanted to get an idea of encountered differences.
I can second what tillithz heard about an update being released to address the 4g connection issues. I heard the info from a VZW store employee (so take that with a grain of salt).
I'll be keeping my eyes open for details on the rumored update (and wether or not it breaks our current root/CWM/custom boot.img flashing abilities).

Any of you have this?
(I have one and wanted to hear from the group)
How did you get it to work?
(Mine was installed using instructions and followed as one should)
What's your thoughts?
(IMO it just doesn't work)
My signal is like a Gotdamn roller coaster, LTE forget about it, I have to swap to 3g/2g to get signal.
Sometimes I get full service but will lose it a minute or two later.
I frustrates the hell out of me.
Any suggestions?

Thanks for input guys.

To xtrawho: AT&T and tmobile use similar cellphone frequencies and technologies. So getting an AT&T booster will do nothing for a Sprint signal.

Thanks for the info with tmo and att being GSM and sprint being CDMA/iDEN it should work great.

Did the CelFi really help your N5?
I have one, and it seems to do nothing for me... I found one link which suggested that it does not boost LTE... and since my N5 seems to prefer a crap LTE signal to an excellent non-LTE signal, it stays on LTE and makes having the CelFi rather worthless.
Or at least that's the only explanation I can think of. Can anyone confirm?
Hell no! It just collects dust, most worthless POS I've ever used. At least att and sprint offers a real booster.
As far as the LTE forget about it.
Hell I can force 3g only and still see no difference with that POS on for it being off, running signal strength in developer mode it doesn't change one bit.
Tried with N5 and 2 other T-Mobile iphones nothing, no boost at all.
BTW tested on KK and L, pushing 3g only, 2g only and LTE.
You can force by dialing
*#*#4636#*#*
If this is the older 1700/2100Mhz HSPA only booster it is a sucky device. I am swapping mine for the new LTE model.
Here are some tips on getting the old model working. You need to put the window unit in a spot that gets no more than 2 bars(If you get more bars the repeater will lower transmission power). Put the repeater unit as far as possible from the window unit. Window unit should be as high as possible( mine is in the kitchen on top of a cabinet). The repeater unit should be waist high or lower. If the repeater unit shows 6-9 on it's display that is good. Lower or higher is bad. The signal drop you see when using lots of data(ex. Speedtest) is because the booster has limited power output. Repositioning may be needed.
Also if you have 2 or more bars of signal throughout your house you don't need the booster. Your phone will constantly switch between the tower and your booster thus causing disconnects.

How are you getting a newer device? I did not know they offered one

Very bad reception (GSM/3G) + weakish Wifi

So I bought a Nexus 5 the other day, a used D821) and I am a little displeased with the reception. It's very, very bad. A lot worse than on my HTC One and the spare Gnex I borrowed for a while (my One's being repaired).
I've googled and searched like a madman but nothing helps me. I do not use 4G because it's not in my plan (don't want it and don't need it). I can hardly get 3G on this thing, mostly 2G and sometimes not even that. On other phones with this carrier I have awesome signal reception in my room at home but with the Nexus 5 it's hardly 1 bar. Also the wifi is kind of weakish and I didn't expect everything to be as good on a budget-ish phone as on a top price premium HTC One but the signal shouldn't be this bad.
When I'm out I hardly if ever get 3G signal. I have edge pretty much all the time and sometimes not even that. On my other phones I have awesome reception. I tried flashing an earlier modem (.17) that was said to work better but it didn't help.
No dust in my sim tray (I just cleaned it..) and my sim card's just fine.
Almost 100 views and nothing?

Not much to say I think. The signal is the signal.
I find my N5 nearly as good as moto x. And both far better than my S2.
Not much can be done about signal strength.
Sorry I couldn't help.
