[Q] Verizon GS3 super slow after root. Please help - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi I'm new here but I visit the site a lot for tips so thanks to all of you who take the time to post info. I rooted my galaxy s3 (sch i535, android v4.1.2, kernel version 3.0.31 1152558) with Odin 1.85 and CF Root. It is now running extremely slow, like 3mbps download speed on speed test. I unrooted, wiped the data with the stock recovery and reflashed the stock firmware but it is still extremely slow. While rooted I downloaded a cpu controller and maxed out the speed just to see if it would work, but download speed still remained painfully slow. (Prior to rooting I was seeing 40+ mbps download speeds). Can anyone give me some guidance on how to fix this issue? I would greatly appreciate it, thanks!

OK a couple of things.
1. Rooting, CPU speed, and download speed are not related. They will not affect each other. Changing CPU speed will not affect download speed.
2. Is this on a router? If so reboot the router. If on LTE it could be the tower you are connected to. Maybe maintenance.

Operating on LTE. As soon as the root was complete I noticed and overall lag in the operation of the phone (screen transitions, loading pictures from my gallery etc). I perfored the speed test right before I rooted and it was showing 40+ mbps, from the same tower I am now getting 3mbps. It definitely seems like this problem was caused by the rooting process (maybe I screwed something up). I'm not sure why my phone won't kick back up to normal speeds even after I've reflashed with stock firmware. Am I missing a step somewhere?

Radio will likely be the same, it will be the same download speeds. Connect to WiFi. Test it against other devices. If they get different speeds, it will be the device, if not, then just a fluke with the network probably. Test against another LTE device if you have it. Are you stock rooted or running a different ROM?

Rooted Using Kernels from Adrynalyne- Anybody Getting Slow Upload Speeds?

Sorry- I'm new so I can't post in the development section but I'm using the 4.3 versions of Adrynalyne's kernels and I'm getting slower donwload speeds and much slower upload speeds (closer to 500k). When I flashed back to the stock kernel the dl and upl speeds went back to normal. Anybody else getting this?

Kernel has absolutely nothing to do with your network speeds. That was likely a fluke.
Network speeds are affected by a number of things-signal strength and network congestion being the biggest factors.
Do several tests different times of day and you will see that 3g can vary from 30 to 2100 kbps download speeds. As for 4g.. Idk what typical speeds are, but it will have a similar range.

Thanks AdhvanIt for the response but I tried testing them within minutes of flashing kernels and did numerous tests. With stock kernel I was getting about 8-12mbs donwloads and believe it or not upwards to 25+ mbs uploads (and that's consistently) while with the Adrynalyne's ROMS (using different versions- a-c) I was getting about 3-6 mbs downloads and 1-2 mbs uploads. Granted 3-6 is good enough but the disparity between 3-6 and 8-12 for uploads and 2 and 25 is quite a difference. You mention that kernels have nothing to do with speed but I was wondering if undervolting has any effect on the radio? Is anybody else having donwload/upload issues?
The upload speeds on the speed test app are completely wrong. If anything, the Adrynalyne kernel brought it closer to what it should be. Tether the internet from your phone to your computer, then go to the speed test web site. That'll show you what it should be.
Tried tethering (which always seems slower) and got the same results with the 4.a - 4.3 kernels. If anybody is trying this kernel are you getting the same results? I really love this kernel and Adrynalyn's work is always top notch. I don't know if this is just my phone with maybe a bad radio?
that has to be the kernel.. check for updates... or try somthing different.

Has to be?
I'm all ears on the explanation of why it has to be.
Hi Adrynalyn. First, thanks for all of the work and time you put in. I can't post in the development thread or otherwise I would have posted this thread there. Also, thanks for checking in on the thread. Is it just my experience with the download speed using the 4.3 kernels? Thanks!
Im using his 4.3b and my speeds are fine. All his kernals have done well for me. As stated above 4g speeds should be around 7-12down and 4-6up. At least in NY that is the usual besides some slighty higher numbers once in a while.
I would redownload and try flashing again. Are you using rom manager to flash or going into recovery. I have done both and it seems fine...
Not to jack the thread... but
I am new and can't post in the dev section yet. Adrynalyn, just wanted to express my gratitude for all your hard work!!! Tried a couple other ROM's, but just LOVE yours and came back within minutes of each experience...
In my strongest 4g LTE area I get 15/5 pretty regularly on adryns kernels and from what I understand thats all your really sposed to be seeing...
Thanks to you guys for responding- it looks to be unique to my situation then. I'm flashing via recovery. Would that make a difference? I'm in San Jose and I had been getting incredible upload speeds- frequently hitting above 30mbs. My donwloads have always been lower but flashing with these kernels I haven't been able to duplicate. Maybe it's because I'm using the stock but rooted ROM? Jrocker23- are you using the stock rom, too?
Yes, all I did was root via adb and added Adranalyne's kernals. Im running .06 stock. Also flashing from recovery should work fine. Are you using setcpu or running with the stock kernal speed?

Funny you say this because I am in the San Jose area and before would hit 15-30mbs and now with adryns~ 4.3a kernel I get only 3/1mbs @ speakeasy website. This is rather weird.. Let me try a different kernel and report back with speeds.
Smok3d-
I'm also from the San Jose area. I was getting blazing uploads but now I can't get it over 2mbs. Something to do with our area's towers? Smok3d- could you revert back to the stock kernel? I did and was getting the regular speeds- I wonder if that's it too?
Ok there is definitely an issue going on here with kernels and speeds.
I was using Teslacoil with the included kernel and my speed in 3G area was snappy, when running speed tests I'd consistently get around 1.5 meg.
Yesterday i flashed the latest Virus rom with recommended Ziggy BFS kernel, and i almost automatically noticed my speed was running considerabley slower. When running a speed test, I'd get only around 100 KB down.
So today, i flashed the latest Virus rom again but this time i flashed Imoseyon normal lean kernel on it and now my speeds are back to 1.5 MB.
Now i know that speed tests are not accurate when run from the phone itself, however, the difference in speed is so dramatic that you don't even need to run a speed test to notice it right away.

And what is it with adrynalyne kernel that is the problem? I would love to know. I'm running it and my real speeds are great. You are running speed tests, bet if you didn't you wouldn't even notice the speed. Just because you are getting a certain speed from a TEST doesn't mean you will get the same in real world performance. Do research or provide facts before you make statements you can't back up

L00k above at my post... I automatically noticed my speed was considerably slower before even running a speed test. Then i change kernels, and its magically back to normal.
I'm no dev, so i couldn't begin to explain what in the kernel would cause it. And just because you aren't experiencing the issue doesn't mean it doesn't exist for others. Who knows? Maybe it was just a bad flash or CWR didn't clean cache properly before flashing, anything is possible, but we should work together to bring resolution to issues that arise, even if it is just happening to some...

Slow internet speed after rooting

I rooted my HTC inspire (with Coredroid) yesterday and i've been having slow upload and download speed since then. prior to rooting, I had upload speed above 1000 but the max i get now is 350. and my download speed was up to 3000 before rooting and now i barely get 1.5K
When you rooted did you restore the stock radio? I'm going to guess you're still using the downgrade radio.
Or is the ril matched to that radio?

I didn't do anything with radio.. I rooted it using the one click method and downloaded coredroid.. so Coredroid doesn't come with an updated radio?. What do you recommened?

In some markets, many of the custom ROMs have slow data speeds unless you do a few tweaks. A simple APN reconfig (found in my thread here) is usually all that's needed to get you back up to stock speeds. If you want to push up your speeds a little further, the methods in this thread will get you the absolute maximum current speeds that AT&T is allowing us.

thanks!..i followed the instruction for coredroid in your thread. but i saw no change in my speed.

Unusual LTE speeds EP1f nameless kernel

Hey, just seeing if anyone has a fix for this. I am using the new nameless rom and it is amazing BUUUUTTTT my data speeds are only about 5mbps when I was getting 26mbps prior. I switched back to straight stock and it still is slower than I would like. Any advice on what I can do?
I have heard on a couple of threads that the speedtest.net app doesn't work right with this leak. Try using the speak easy website and do a speed test off that to see if your speeds change at all
Also this probably should be in the general section not the development section.
I've never pulled speeds that high I'm stuck st five and there a lte coverage throughout my whole city???

Not to say that you are wrong, but the kernel itself won't effect your data speed. If 4G turns on and is functional in the sense that you are able to use the 4G network, then the kernel is working as it should. It's possible that your area put a cap on the speed you were seeing, and now you are not seeing it. However, if you flash another kernel and are back up to the speed you were seeing, then I will definitely investigate.

I'm with him. Radio/modem would affect data speed, not kernel.
Has anyone tried the EE4 radio's I released yesterday?
I have read everywhere that 2.3.4 does not like speedtest
Kudos to this thread not getting roasted. I'm jealous. Especially in the development section.
Sorry, I put a new last night. The ep1h radio. I am going to try Kejar's EE4 radio tonight and hopefully that will fix it!!!
The EP1H radio will fix your problem and you'll be able to keep the GB leak, as you can flash the EP1H radio-only via Odin.

I have been running it all day and it's been working just fine. No more static when I receive phone calls. Thanks a ton for the EE4 radios.
Speedwise, running speed test from speedtest.net from my labtop via wireless tether, I'm seeing speeds of 10Mbps down and 1.3Mbps up. The speed differences for me in my area are the same from both the ep1h and ee4 radios. I ran 5 sets of test for each radio to the same server.

I didn't mean that gingerbread in general i just meant it seamed off using the speedtest app in these leaks. When i used the website i always averaged 3 or 4 extra mps down and about .5 to 1 mps up. I even used the same servers on both of them. I also heard the same for others but when i compared the website speed for the leaks to the speedtest app of froyo(EE4) they usually matched each other. So i have just been blaming the app for the mix up.

[Q] NexusMod ICS Zero Beta 7 UCLD2 Radio slowness

Yes a noob to Android and yes, first post
Before my quick question I have to say thank you to M0D1441 for this ROM (and his contributors - it is absolutely amazing, and by far - the best ROM out there for Galaxy Skyrocket I727 users.
Flashed this Rom from stock I727R Rom last week and have had huge success with it and cannot wait for the update to this Beta 7.
However, since flashing the UCLD2 radio I notice significant slower speeds compared to whatever the stock was using. I have followed all procedures correctly, am able to auto switchover from LTE and HSPA+ and have had no issues with this ROM that anyone else has reported other than significantly slower speeds.
Max down on HSPA+ has been between 5 - 7 Mbs with upload at 0.2-0.56 Mbs and LTE down: 16-22Mbs (which is not bad) but have full bars and 2.78 up.
Even my home WiFi (802.11n) connection suffers from this new radio with dowload @ 18Mbs and up @ 0.56 compared to stock ROM speeds at least 38.6Mbs down and 3.7Mbs up.
My speeds with all connections with stock radio were, at bare minimum, double to what I am getting now.
I have flashed the UCLD2 radio a few times following procedures and still no change in speeds. I have read nightmare stories about switching back to older radios on the I727R and am nervous to do so.
Wondering if other Rogers users have experienced the same issue and if need be, what radio change to?
What was stock radio on Rogers I727R and is it compatible with the NexusMod ICS Zero Beta 7?
Is/can this UCLD2 radio be not fully compatible for Rogers customers in Canada?
Thanks a million in advance!
I'm on att and I haven't noticed a drop in speed I know its not Rodgers but I can't imagine its all that different

Keep in mind the modem is for AT&T, so not surprised you're seeing slower speeds on Rogers. Also, the modem, a.k.a. Radio has no affect on Wifi as Wifi is part of the kernel.
Bottom line, your experience is more than likely going to be a "best effort" at best; think of it like trying to install a Ford part on your Chevy car.

Thanks for your input. Yes, I figured this radio may only indeed be for AT&T but it is such a great modem/radio. My battery life is far superior with the UCDL2 as opposed to the stock KJ7 radio. Guess it's a toss between speed or bat life
As for WiFi, I realize this radio should have no effect on it but it is definitely slower with the UCLD2 modem. Strange - I will have to try and get this under the microscope and see how/if/what is effecting it.
This may be a dumb question (sorry) but can you use the stock radio with any ICS ROM or is that just going to cause nightmare issues?

Wow. Really? That's what I figured would happen for me but... not happening. The only thing I did not do was install busybox but I can't imagine that would make any difference to the radio.
I just want to make sure i am not damaging my phone by using this modem. maybe it just needs some settling time but it has been almost a week.
What kind of speeds are you getting?

I totally hear ya. However, I have noticed something interesting which completely makes sense. After having the modem settle for a week now I have noticed that my daytime speeds on HSPA+ are slower compared to daytime. Now, Daytime on average is 9.51Mbs down and 1.27Mbs up (which is actually not bad) compared to night (after 9pm) getting an average 13.72Mbs down and 2.73Mbs up. I can't really complain as this seems the norm for GTA on Rogers.
LTE daytime speeds have now been an average of 23.7Mbs down and 3.78Mbs up compared to night time speeds of 31.2Mps down and 5.71up. And, this is on the outskirts of LTE in the East end!
However, my Wi-Fi speeds still suffer. My LTE speeds are far exceeding anything I get through my 802.11n router which maybe something in the Kernel which I will check out.
So really, I can no longer complain Guess it just took some time to settle in the device.
As for the Rogers ICS, according to this article: http://www.androidcentral.com/samsung-reveals-us-ice-cream-sandwich-update-list , " The big picture is that if you've got a Galaxy Tab or Galaxy S II-class phone, chances are you're in line for an ICS update later in the year."
Ouch! Yet no announcement has been officially been made for North America. And, don't forget Rogers will need to test and ram it full of their bloatware before we see it!

Same here, on any rom/kernel combo whether its TW or AOSP and whether I use Faux, KT747, LK, or the regular AOSP and TW kernel I have super slow speeds on my WiFi. Granted its only 12Mbps, 1.2 to 1.6 MBps, but unless I am sitting beside the router I can't get full speed and even when I am beside it I only rarely get full speed. It usually jumps from 80 KBps to 200KBps, sometimes it'll get a little higher but immediately drops back down. On my laptops, kindle fire, and my girlfriends S3 it will max out and stay maxxed out until the download is done but for some strange reason mine won't.

Sometimes going into router interface and changing the DNS to Open DNS will fix it. Mine same speed as PC using 2 Wire DSL. Phone may not like the DNS server you are using.
I flashed a backup of another ROM and WiFi was still slow so I'm thinking its a hardware issue.

Sometimes going into router interface and changing the DNS to Open DNS will fix it. Mine same speed as PC using 2 Wire DSL. Phone may not like the DNS server you are using.

I have no earthly clue how to mess with the DNS server. I have never had any experience with routers or high speed internet until 6 months ago, I live in the sticks and Charter wanted $45809.27 exactly to bring me cable. I just loved how they added the 27ยข.
Anyway, it seems like we will have very similar routers, I am taking it you have AT&T and so do I. From what I've read they're the only ones who really use the 2 wire routers.
