Music skipping - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anybody have this issue? At first, I thought it was just a Google music issue where songs either stop half way through, or skip. But, it happens on most streaming apps such as slacker radio, fusion player... Anybody else? I wonder if it is a KitKat bug?

Very annoying, only Pandora seems to be working okay. Even spotify has issues, but that's a whole different story, mostly with album art

Hmm interesting, well just have to wait and see if the developers can fix it. I've already contacted the developer of player pro and told him about the problem. You might do the same for your favorite music apps

It is due to a regression in flac decoding on KitKat: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=62562

Use an other kernel is ok

I flashed Cataclysm rom and kernel by faux123, the problem is fixed!
I think flash only the kernel is also ok

is the phone in your pocket when it starts skipping? like could it be the proximity or g sensor?

Random Zapping noise while listening to music

Not sure how to exactly describe the sound but I randomly get a ear piercing zapping noise while listening through earphones or connected to aux wire in the car. After it happens the volume gets lower and I have to pull out the wires and then restart the song. Anyone else experience this?
Fyi my setup is latest synergy r147. But it also happened since I had r125.
Maybe its just hardware related.
this is only happening in poweramp and not the stock player.

Not necessarily. It could be that your audio cable is damaged or there is a grounding loop if you're charging it as well

poweramp seems to be the problem
I tried playing the same files on the stock player but never got the squealing noise. and if i unplug it it still squeals. and it happens when it is cold outside. pls help i cannot figure it out. seems like poweramp is the problem so i deleted poweramp and reinstalled it. and only restored data from TIBU. and after a while the noise comes back. i don't know what to do

It's the file format themselves then. Which file formats do you notice cause the squeaking? For me, I noticed that wma and m4a files cause constant squeaking in PowerAmp whereas mp3's work fine. I have zero issues playing those same audio files in the stock player. Basically, any music files that I placed on my phone from Windows Media Player and iTunes cause music popping/cracking unless using the stock music player.

It's ridiculous that those two file formats cause issues for me. The worst part is I have those same exact files on my HTC Droid Incredible and have absolutely no issues. It was something I noticed immediately once I received my GSIII in July but previously had no issues with. Months ago I sent an email to the PowerAmp dev to inquire about this and they told me it was an issue with Samsung's firmware not their app. It seems like Samsung sabotaged music file compatibility with third party apps. I still love PowerAmp though.

I've been having the same problem. Whether its my ear phones, AV cable in the car or, at work it does it. Even on different apps (native music player, play music, and podcast app). I have an otter box so my ports are good and clean and no water damage. No idea why it happens but I've got a replacement on the way for an unrelated reason. So hopefully it won't do it too.

Fwiw I think I found the problem....it was a low voltage problem. When my voltages for kernel settings were tweaked to be lower I would immediately get the zapping sounds. Can't say what the levels were but anything I setup away from stock...it happened. Hope this helps anyone.

[Q] Music Playback issue S3

I am having issues with Google Music playback. I am running rooted stock 4.1.1 and am unable to get Google Music working properly. It shows my playlist, and plays 2-4 songs, but then stops playing. The program will show the last screen it was on, with a pause button as if it was still playing. But it does not play the music, or respond to any button being pushed. I can still search through my playlist and even choose other songs, but they will not play, and it goes back to showing the last song it was playing. I have downloaded some music to the device and it seems to still play the music stored on the device. This has happened both on mobile data and wi-fi, though often more on data,

ive had the same issue, even after pinning music from the cloud to my phone. my workaround has been to close all recent apps and clear ram in task manager. it is frustrating though.
My phone does the same thing ever since the jelly bean update, I'm stock and not rooted. My fix is to use the task manager and force quit Google Music then relaunch it, like stated above. After that it seems to work properly for a few days. Sucks though because it always happens when I'm on my run during lunch and nothing kills momentum more than having to stop and do this!

Yeah, mine doesn't show up in recent apps on my task manager when it happens. I uninstalled and reinstalled Google music. Working so far.
So question, does this problem affect the stock rom as well or just custom roms. ?
This will be kind of a big problem for me since this is how I listen to all my music in my truck.
Well happened again today on my run and tonight at home on Wi-Fi, sick of this and all Google suggested was what we are trying what a bunch of crap. I'm trying something new, I uninstalled updates and returned it to the oem version and see how it goes. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Well 2 days on the oem version with no updates installed and no problems so far. Looks like this might be a temporary fix until Google figures out what's going on.

Rebooting will also fix the problem.
Does this problem happen with other music players?
If not, what music player are working?

I ditched Google play when it was doing what you explained. I remember buying power amp 2 years ago. Downloaded it and works like a charm. Downloads the cover art for all my music. And the equalizer brings out the best sound from my oem s3 ear buds.

It might be easier for you both to just post which version of Google Music you have installed. If you're on two different versions then you can troubleshoot better.

Technically you already have two music players pre-installed which is the stock player and Google Play. People end up downloading other players as those have better sound with and without audio enhancements along with good headsets. I also at one point had a play back issue so I downloaded another player and had no playback issues.

Anyone else with Google music issues?

On top of the new update which doesn't detect on device music, does anyone else have constant issues on any version with streaming skipping around and clutching up?

Use a build prop editor to make sure lpa.decode is set to false for streaming problems

I had some issues for about 3 hours the other day with streaming music. It would skip and freeze. But, I haven't had any issues since.
Like 90% of the time my locally stored music just disappears from play music. Works fine on other players though.

It's been working the best it ever has on my end, apart from the build prop tweak. But that's not from Google music, that's Rom specific.

It stores the music in android/secure, so when flashing anew rom and wiping, it erases all of it. Made me mad the first time I did it because I had downloaded about 5 gb, and I re flashed anew rom a couple days later and it was all gone.

Thanks, but I was actually talking about my non-play music. Stuff I put on there myself. After clearing the app's data it all shows back up but after downloading any play music or adding more songs to the library and then rebooting, it disappears again. In the end I found it's best and easiest to just re-tag and move any downloaded play store music and use apollo or the htc music app.

its like from now, if I add music files, more specifically, .aac files, the time of the track has seemed to double, yet starts at the middle of that doubled time, so it plays normally. why am I looking for a new player is because it actually cuts the track at the end too early, and I want to actually listen to entire track.

I don't know about the doubling thing, but the end of the track being cut off is probably because of your crossfade / gapless settings which can be adjusted.
Personally, the only music app I ever used was Poweramp until I switched to Google Music All Access when I bought this phone. I haven't looked back.

Doubling of track time is a problem with the specific music file and not with PowerAmp..
Even I have faced this a few times but it was because of the bad file... I re-downloaded the file from a different source and everything was ok!
Seriously, there isn't any music app which I've found better than PowerAmp and I've been using it since ages!
