Is there a purely stock, rooted, fully functional rom for the Relay out there? I know how to use ADB and prefer doing so as opposed to odin and other methods. Not interested in CWM either. I just need root[for firewall and backup utility reasons] and will debloat manually after installation.
The only method to root the Relay is by using a custom Recovery of some form and ODIN or heimdal. We can not use adb to flash a Relay, it does not have fastboot. ODIN or heimdall are used to flash a Samsung device.
I made a stock rooted, debloated rom. On the Relay, I think you will want to use heimdall (or Odin) to flash CWM. From there, you can root the stock rom or flash custom roms.
The other option would be finding a root exploit.

Magamo, You are VERY wrong. I have used ADB to flash my relay from the original T-699UVLH1 to the rooted version. So using a "custom recovery" is most definately not the only way to do it. Perhaps you lack the knowledge to properly use ADB. And I just re-verified, The Relay does indeed have "fastboot". Your post was wrong on so many levels...

Ya, not interested in heimdall, odin and CWM methods. Just looking for a purely stock rom with stock recovery, both in the rooted state.
Well if you can root via adb, then just flash back to 4.1.2 and root it.

I'm not really certain what you are trying to prove here. If you have a better way, then post your steps so that we all might learn from your awesome knowledge, oh great one. Meanwhile, I'll stick to doing things the proven way for our phone that doesn't involve things that have been unproven, and risky. More than likely, the only way you'll be able to root the relay using ADB only, is by having a modified kernel installed, which... Means you will have had to have rooted the phone already. So you're talking yourself into a catch 22 already. But please, post your process. I'd love to verify the veracity of this.

I can't think of any way to root it solely with adb, are you attempting to push psneuter or some other program to root this way? I guess I just don't see it happening, but please tell as I'm a curious learner
Also how did you re-verify the relay has fastboot? I only know a handful of Samsung devices that have a bootloader capable of using fastboot and am shocked to know this phone does, can you please tell me how you were able to do this?

I first learned how to root on my old LG C800[My Touch Q] here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1752704
I ultimately decided that I didn't like the CWM parts and looked for a way to just push the ROM and recovery to the C800. Then looked up a tutorial on how to use ADB properly[can't remember were that was] because of problems with the C800 recovery and discovered in said process, that MOST[dare I say all?] Android phones have a fastboot mode as it is part of the recovery runtime mode. This includes Samsung devices. After finally successfully installing a rooted stock recovery on the C800 I discovered the problem I was having with it was not something I could fix as it was software problem on LG's side[headphone volume issue]. Got rid of it and bought a Relay.
After finding a few different methods rooting the Relay, I decided to use the ADB method I already knew would work. I downloaded a stock rooted ROM[UVLH1, found here on XDA] and painlessly installed it using more or less same methods and procedures that were used on the C800. Installing the recovery was equally as painless. I have had zero problems with the Relay and love it. Have been curious about the update to JB though and have been looking for the aforementioned purely stock rooted ROM. Thing is I like and use a few of T-mobile's preinstalled apps so a debloated ROM is useless to me. I know which software to remove[CarrierIQ for a start] and which to freeze and prefer to do so on my own. So Gee One's rooted ROM doesn't have what's needed. I can fully value and appreciate his work though.
To answer one of your questions directly, I did not use a new bootloader. While CWM is a very handy tool, I don't ROM switch enough and haven't changed the ROM on this Relay since getting the rooted UVLH1 on it.
As for the "instigate" remark, I think the word you likely were looking for is "provoke". You are asking honest questions presented in a lucid and civilized fashion. My response to "Magamo" was invoked because he/she/it came off as a complete dolt and posting woefully inaccurate information, which not only does a dis-service to anyone reading this post, but makes himself look like a monkey diddling football.

Not trying prove anything. And it's not MY "awesome knowledge". ADB was created by, let's think.... OH ya - Google, for use on and for the Android platform. As for your proven/unproven comments, can you be any more misinformed? I've rooted 2 of my own personal phones and dozens of others for family, friends and coworkers, all using ADB. Hmmm.... Your above statement only proves you don't understand or know how to use ADB properly[if at all]. Here's a great idea for you, read a tutorial about how to use ADB and verify it yourself.

I simply used ADB to flash a pre-rooted ROM[UVLH1] to the Relay. I'm currently on 4.0.4 and would like to try 4.1.2, but need a few things you seem to have removed from the ROM you posted. If you happened to have a stock + rooted ROM, could you post it? And if you do would you all like me to post a step by step for installing it using ADB?
There is a stock mc5 rom that has all the stuff that I took out. You could use that to add back in the pieces that I took out of my version. I think you might need simg2img to convert the stock system to an ext4 img file that can be loop mounted,
I think the http://samsung-updates.com/ site should have the JB rom.

I'm not seeing where this hostility toward Magamo is coming from, I'm sure he knows how to use adb as he appears to be on team apex who devs for this phone. But I still am not sure how you were able to root your relay just with adb, I guess I just wasn't able to find the method you used looking through the mytouch q thread. Again not trying to instigate or rather provoke you but could you lay it out for me, just not wrapping my head around this
And also I only know of three or so Samsung devices with fastboot capabilities, all of which are nexus devices, can you explain how to get into fastboot, this would be super cool to me, as for answering your question on stock jellybean ROM can you not just update your phone via ota or did your root method break this, thanks

I've posted a stock MC5 Image that's been run through simg2img on the Stock ROM thread. It's in update.zip form, it also contains a boot.img simply unzip that, and there you go. I've also posted a stock recovery in the same post.
And lexluther, you still haven't posted the steps you took. I'm still quite interested in verifying the veracity of this, considering that the stock image and kernel has adb root access disabled, so how did you enable fastboot, especially since as we all on TeamApexQ who have disassembled both the software and hardware of the relay never found a way to, hence my posts. Instead of being insulting, confrontational and provocative with me, how about you just be rational and helpful, hmmm? Saying you did it on a completely different phone by a different manufacturer is ... less than helpful.

Sorry mate, I would have if I'd ever seen this message. Sadly I don't have the Relay anymore, battery popped and killed the phone with it. If memory serves you needed to have a stock rom[before the update] and then pushed the rooted rom to it through adb, then letting it update itself that way, but I'm not sure as it's been so long.

OK...I've read the Wiki and the Glossary, I've searched the forums, I've been obsessively reading this forum for a week, and I still have some very basic questions that I'm hoping someone can either point me to a link or just drop some info for me. I know many of you have been at this since the Dawn of Android, but sometimes I feel like I'm walking into my first day of med-school when everyone else has been here for 5 years. Assume for a moment that I am a tabula rasa where the rest of you are now writing in the margins of a dense technical manual. Because that's what it feels like for me.
First, some background info: I want to learn how to do all this stuff, but this phone was expensive! I don't want to break it. So I'm cautious. I'm not a programmer but I'm not technically inept. I am good at following directions. I don't panic when things go wrong. So I think I can root, flash, and all the fun stuff that comes with having an Android device. But I have some questions that are still unanswered. I'll try to be as concise as possible (too late, I know):
1) I have the SPH-D720 model. I see rooting guides for the I9020 but not the SPH-D720. Will those other guides work for my device? I've seen other people ask this same question get sent to BuglessPete's guide so I'm assuming so, but I want to be sure.
2) I know that GRJ90 and 2.3.5 just came out. My phone is updated to both. It looks like most of the root guides are still referring to 2.3.4 or 2.3.3. Should I wait until someone releases an updated 2.3.5 guide, or is the method still the same?
3) Backups...these are different than saved settings, yes? So when I root my phone (which apparently requires unlocking the bootloader now) I'm going to lose all of my apps/themes/settings, right?
4) Do any of the developers offer tech support?
I now throw myself to the mercy of the masses, prepared for flames, but hoping for help.

It's the same.
- fastboot oem unlock
- flash a custom recovery for your device (crespo4g) using fastboot
- boot into CWM, mount system and flash the su binary

No change unless you are trying to flash a modified boot.img for adb remount (this is not necessary if you merely want root access)

Yes, fastboot oem unlock wipes everything, including the SD card.

Is it possible to back up all of my settings and whatnot, and then quickly put them back after rooting the phone? No biggie if not, and since all of my contact info is on Google that sync happens automatically.
Another question - when I'm installing the sdk, do I need all the other stuff that it automatically selects or can I dump all that and just download the USB driver package?

You could use something like titanium backup, but watch what you restore as some things cause issues.

So...I can't get the correct driver installed. In all the guides it says I should have the Bootloader Interface listed as the driver. But that is not one of my options - Allgamer's guide says there should be 3 choices, but I only have 2:
Android ADB Interface
and
Android Composite ADB Interface
How do I choose the Bootloader Interface?
You need to be in the bootloader on the phone I believe. I am new to the nexus s so I am not 100 percent sure.
Didn't work from the bootloader either - still showing Android ADB Interface.
I guess I'll uninstall everything and start from scratch.

I believe you can, but you can't use a one click root method. Everybody still says it's easy to do, but I don't quite get it. I'm not an idiot, but I just don't understand some of the stuff they say to do. Apparantly you have to "install nvflasher through clockworkmod". I see where I can download clockworkmod, but it's just a bunch of DLL files and an exe I think. Then I saw something about installing drivers and they lost me. My only guess was the drivers it installs when you plug your phone into your computer via the usb port? I don't know. Anyway, after installing the nvflasher, I guess you can just flash roms. I don't quite understand how to do that either though, lol.

Are you saying this method works on the stock Gingerbread rom? I thought SOC didn't work with GB on the G2x.

Just a heads up...I don't think this will work. Unless SOC updated to a new version. Just search the forums use this "how to root after OTA " I recommend NVFLash CWM then if you want 2.3.3 rooted search "stock OTA rooted." Posted by xboarder. Or use a custom rom. This has been asked to many times. Yes it is possible to root some other way. That to is covered by xboarder also. Unless SOC has a new version out with in the last week it wont Work.....read post 4665. But I do have great news......the search options in the forums do work and even Google searches will direct you to xda. If you find a post about something read all of it. Then read the OP(opening post) 3 to 4 time looking at dates and change logs..
So to recap
1) SOC will not work. NVFlash clockwork.
2) use the search/Google.
3) if you read this and did not see xboarders name at least once befor this post, reread.
4) read and reread.....keep reading....the answers are posted.
5) read the OP. Look at dates and change logs.

Yeah, I might look at it again and give it a try later on. There's still a few things i'm confused about though.
I didn't know you could flash roms without rooting first. But I guess flashing a rooted rom technically does root your phone? It's just a different way of achieving root? Also, if you are gonna flash roms, I thought you had to do the nvflash routine.. which would root your phone anyway.. lol.
I believe some cases that could be true. Root could be needed to install a flash recovery. Our phone use nvidia. The nvflash utility makes it easy. Some one please correct me if I am wrong. When you nvflash you are replacing the factor/stock recovery with CWM. At that point you could put any Rom you like. I kind of see it like a boot disk. Root allows you to see system folders and such. Kind of like having admin rites on your computers operating system. Root also aloes programs to modify system information. To compare this to the common computer root is like an admin account in windows. Unroot is like a user account that companies give you on their computer. CWM is like having a boot disk. I hope I cleared that up for some one.

so I hope the Moderators and the developer for eaglesblood dont mind my following anouncements ne flashing NCFlash does not give you su permissions therefore for people like me (i consider my self a super user and i want to steal a phrase from another post i seen " i got the new gx2 and i have not made it screem my bit** yet" meaning i dont want my phone to act like anyone else phone I have diffrent needs) i do however like the stock rom and Eaglesblood rom is as close to stoc as can get but is rooted i am working on porting a recovery that is just like the stock room when you get it this will take a little time to do and i will start it of by modding the eaglesblood romso i hope that does not make them mad anyways i will not post on here when i am finished with it i wil post on my "LG G2X (official) group on facebook and the link to that is... well it want let me post a link yet so if i could get a moderator to post it that would be great

Yes and no, in that order. You can use nvflash to replace the stock recovery with a custom recovery, such as clockworkmod recovery. Using custom recovery, you can flash any rom that's compatible with the phone. Most of the roms have superuser privileges (root) built into them.
Good news i found a root for and it works i am so happy and now i dont have to mess with the eaglesblood rom (now offence) but you do have to flash clockworkmod recovery in order to flash the su root package for my info go to facebook and search LG G2x (official)

Hey everyone, I just want to let you all know that I was able to do the NVFlash, backup everything, and install CM7.
I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE HECK I WAS WORRIED ABOUT!!!! It was so incredibly easy.
CM7 is installed, however I'm having issues with my APN now working and losing its information, I've posted for help on that in another thread.
Thanks again, and to those out there who worry like I did...have no fear....CWM is a neat tool, ESPECIALLY for backup of your entire phone.

I found the sticky with instructions about how to root the Infuse but, when I downloaded it, Kaspersky blocked it stating it contained a Trojan. I know there are false alarms off and on, but it makes me nervous, nevertheless. Also, I can't tell if it will work with Froyo 2.2.
Can someone confirm that the file is okay? It comes across as http://.....rageagainstthecage I thought it was odd since that's not the file name. It also crashed Kaspersky, which really did make me nervous.

To gain root access to android, you have to basicly find a weakness in the code and exploit it. Rage against the cage is such an exploit.
People have been using this method for some time. If I'm wrong someone please correct me,. So it will trigger a good antivirus.

RATC is fairly old - most people here use SuperOneClick.
Do note that due to its nature, I believe a lot of antivirus programs treat SOC as a trojan.
The problem is that the same paths we use to get root are the same paths malware uses to get root. That's why a lot of the methods for rooting were closed in Gingerbread.
For Gingerbread, the usual way to grab root on Samsung devices is to flash a kernel that roots your device using an initramfs script.

I think I'm supposed to type in a command, but I have no idea what command to type in. I used a Blackberry for 7 years, so the Android OS is new for me, well one month old, anyway. Thank you again. I'm heading there now, but I just read something that makes me nervous. I should probably stop reading. I guess I'm a little gun shy since I don't know the system yet. "It IS a dangerous tool in the wrong hands...Exercise common sense"? What does "common sense" mean? "Fork bomb"? I'll need to Google that one. I know root gives the owner admin rights, but how it does it, I haven't a clue. I guess I have to do more reading...good grief

It IS a potentially malicious payload, BUT it is being used with owner's consent to root the phone.
The DreamDroid malware use exactly same payload - they are trojans, but this is a helpful tool.
It IS a dangerous tool in the wrong hands, but this is a root exploit, so you should exercise common sense and a little understanding of what it does and how it works.

Just follow the instructions in the OP, and it's quick and easy. I trust it way more than super one click. Basically, the thread is about an odin package that takes you back to stock, and it just so happens to be pre rooted and has the modified recovery already installed. With super one click, you still have to install the modified recovery after rooting before flashing a rom, which I found to be cumbersome. If you use the ultimate unbrick, you get root and modified recovery in one easy package, and you can go right to flashing roms afterwards. Also, it's helpful to know how to use the ultimate unbrick just in case you end up bricking your device in the future.

The package referenced above returns you to "almost" stock - it's stock + root + recovery.
The other option is to use Odin or Heimdall to flash a custom kernel that injects root from the initramfs. For Froyo, I believe the Defuse kernels will do this.
For Gingerbread, any of the Gingerbread kernels will do this - but when you flash the kernel you'll also have to flash a Gingerbread ROM.
I purchased a Galaxy Exhilarate last weekend. This phone was just released by AT&T a few days before that. After playing around with the phone, and doing some reading, I can admit, they've done a decent job. Of course, it comes with all the standard "bloat" that all the phones have, but it also has a few nice things too.
For one, reading using the Barnes & Noble Nook App is not bad, esp. since I own a Nook. To read the same books I'm reading on my nook, just tell the nook app the same account you use for your nook, and all your purchased content (including games) will be available. Of course, my Nook is hacked with Android, and I can do far more than just read books on it. Anyway, I'm off topic here.
After toying around with the phone, I decided it was time to delve deeper into it, and look at rooting it. I did a quick search, and, well, there's NOTHING out there on how to root it!
I also wasn't sure how to get into the Android Restore mode.
After looking into it, I figured it out on my own
1) Power down the phone
2) Push & hold both the UP and DOWN volume buttons and then push and hold the Power button.
3) "Samsung" will come up, and then disappear. AS SOON as it disappears, release all the buttons
The phone will now boot into the Android System Recovery mode.
As I'm just getting started, I'll post more when I get to that point!

Rooting the Galaxy Exhilarate
Hello , I'm new to the forum , but I also purchased the Samsung Galaxy Exhilarate recently. I'm sad to say that although you SHOULD be able to "root the phone using a standard technique for Android 2.3.3 to 2.3.7 Gingerbread" , I cannot. I follow the procedure for rooting Androids 2.3.3 to 2.3.7 Gingerbread (using the attached file that you provided), and it gave me a message stating "E:failed to verify whole-file signature. (new line) E:signature verification failed". I'm a noob when it comes to Androids to know what this message means, however I'm hoping you can provide me with some much needed assistance
P.S. I've tried to research around, very thoroughly in my opinion, so this is a last resort of sorts haha

gicuenitro: I'll see if I can get one done. It may be a few days. Next week I start vacation, so I plan to spend a day just messing around w/ this.
You cant apply unofficial updates through the stock recovery as it will check to see if it is signed by samsung. Either patch the recovery or find another way to root.

I used CWM Recovery to flash Custom ROMS to my SGH-i717 (AT&T Galaxy Note) As Soon as i Find that version I will post it. be patient Rome wasnt built in a day and i would hate for your phone to become one expensive paper weight lol:good:

I have used CWM before. I look forward to your solution. I think the Exhilarate is similar to another AT&T phone that may already be rooted, but I don't know if one phone's hack/root will apply to another, similar phone.
Anyone else have any suggestions?
Made several unsuccessful attempts to root this device with SuperOneClick v2.3.3 and DooMLoRD_v4_ROOT for Skyrocket (i727). On a side note, rebooting restores all uninstalled at&t bloatware.

Flash a kernel with a patched recovery then install the su files from the recovery.
That's how antsm did it for the galaxy ace 2, try give him a message and see if he'll whip up a quick kernel for you. I would give it a go but I don't have a Linux machine right now. Remember to ask him politely though.

If someone could get a system dump I would greatly appreciate it. I somehow manage to screw up the stock recovery and now my capacitive buttons only respond once or twice after booting and then they appear to lock up. Attempted to do a full restore through Kies with no success. Chatted with samsung and they say at this time there is no way to do a full reinstall.

Ok, been trying to get root access and/or do a system dump on the phone.
So far, no luck.
However, I have been able to get the phone to dump its system properties...

I used the ADB to get shell access to the phone. When I type the command "su dd if=/dev/block/stl6 of=/sdcard/factoryfs.rfs" I get "su: permission denied".
So, assuming "su" is superuser, how do I get that if my phone isn't rooted???

Ok, I've got my phone to boot into "ODIN Mode". I downloaded ODIN3 1.85. I've opened it up. Not sure I want to push something to the phone just yet (sure as hell don't want to brick it). ...

I pushed the skyrocket cwm and my phone did not like it. I think cwm is actually trying to come up but it's ugly and not usable. The phone still boots but the capacitive buttons are locking up. I have since pushed the s3 stock att recovery and the s3 cwm with no success. I'm using my htc aria because the phone is mostly useless without the buttons. I'm up to custom binary flash count 3 now. I will probably get a chance to play more this weekend but i just started a 5 wk probability and statistics class and a history class that are eating all my time during the week.

I think you may have gone the wrong way about this - however, I am working on a manual root for the phone - and I think I may have something soon!
If/when I get rooted, I'll make sure I post the original img so you can at least recover your phone back to stock.

I was originally trying to root to be able to install cwn through rom manager, but since that didn'tr work I was trying to push CWM thru Odin so I could do a a nadroid and then try to flash superuser and busybox through cwm. I admit I don't know much about it.This is only my second android phone and the first time I've had a backup if I mess something up
I keep searching trying to find stuff. I found a thread on another forum that led me to getting root. I know patience is a virtue, and all, but I should would like to see some work on roms, and recoveries, and for there to actually be a section on XDA for this device.
Yeah I accidentally tried to flash a bootloader from the "Verizon-GS3-CASUAL-Revision131a" java program. I lost my backups in the process so can anyone give me a hand with a backup from thier Stellar?
Hey I actually found the open-source kernel and platform for the Stellar at Samsung's Open Souce site.

If you got ClockworkMod recovery onto your phone (as I saw you got it rooted) you may be able to give me a zip and I think I can make it into a .tar file so Odin will read it since Odin mode is the only mode my phone will get into right now.
I'll keep looking around for some other methods of backup...I also heard Titanium Backup wasn't too bad...

Hmm...you bring up a good point. It's best I not ask you to put in a new recovery mode since we don't know what exactly that will do to the Stellar. I will say that before I bricked the phone I actually did make it work...barely so lets not do that.
Can you try using some programs that access the phone through the computer?
Google this: Index of /romdump
You should find a little program calle Romdump. It should extract the roms without messing anything up.
Do you know about ADB? If not I do have enough experience to help you with that.
You need to have a clockwork mod recovery that is built for this phone, or whatever phone you are using, in order to get it to flash. Without a custom recovery for the galaxy stellar, or at least a recovery that is sure to work for this phone (I think I heard about some S3 stuff that works for the stellar, like the root method I think you used) the recovery will not flash and your phone will not load until you reflash the stock recovery.
Do not flash any recoveries until you know they work for your phone (i.e. someone has tested them), or without a backup of your stock recovery.
Since you are both saying you're not devs and don't really know what you're doing (neither do I really) I would suggest not flashing any recoveries that have not been confirmed to work for the stellar. Yes, many people use CWM and TWRP but there is a custom build of those recoveries for every phone, they are not universal.
I'm really interested in this phone so I'm hoping some development starts. Without community support and development I don't think I would bother switching to Verizon to get this phone even though its free. I hate cell phone contracts...

I thought there would be a lot more people like me who needed a new phone, didn't really have money for an upgrade, so they went with this phone like I did. Doesn't really seem like it has gained much interest in the dev community. It still doesn't have it's own subforum on here. I am starting to really regret getting this phone. Half the fun of having android for me was the dev, and community support for the devices I had in the past. I had the galaxy s, and the inspire 4g, both of which had really big communities, and they started pretty much right at the release for those phones.
Has it even been out an entire month yet?

STOCK ROM!
HEY guys I rooted my phone already. Things were going great, until i decided to download some kind of font switch. I guess it is required for the phone to be root. Then it asked me to restart my phone, that's when my phone froze on the samsung logo screen . It' stuck there ever since. I did a factory reset, and that didn't work either. So i downloaded ODIN and im waiting for a STOCK rom! can anybody help me with that and PM me?It would be great THANKS!

Sovereign738111 and I worked on this yesterday and got the recovery, system, and bootloader images off of my phone and into a couple of files. Now we just need a developer to give them to...In the meantime I'm also reading up on how to build a custom ROM etc. so that I can get familiarized with it. That way I can possibly try it myself. I know how to compile my own regular Linux kernel and add packages and things of that nature, and looking at what I've seen so far, figuring this out for Android shouldn't be too difficult.
I don't have the Stellar but I would be willing to work on a ROM for you guys. If someone would give me the files I need, I'll gladly do it. Just need a couple of people to test also.
