Hi,
I am a NOOB, definitely. I just figured out how to root my Sony Xperia Arc S using Eroot_V1.3.4.exe Seemed to go well, and I now have the Superuser app on my phone.
I don't know what to do next. I realize I have more freedom with a rooted phone. I want to free up memory so I can install more apps (my phone had very limited internal memory for apps). But, in general, what steps should I follow next, after rooting my phone? I have read about remove bloatware, installing new ROM, etc. Just not sure what I do next. I installed Titanium Backup Free, but wasn't sure what to do with it next, so I decided to put on the brakes and write this post.
Thanks for your input.

As u said, remove some of the unwanted bloatware apps that u never use in the device in order to free up the RAM & ROM a little. Then try a custom rom for ur device in order to boost your device's performance.
Hit thanks rather than typing it now Free

You already Know most of the things :good: ... It depends on you and how you want your phone to be. If you don't like how your stock rom is then you can flash a custom rom. If you don't like the random apps using the phone memory then you can also remove them. Also you can change the boot animations. It simply depends on you

I rooted my phone using SuperoneClick for mac/linux, and it was very simple. It said my phone was rebooting and that my phone was rooted.
Now what do I do? What can I do with rooting? I don't see any difference on the mainscreen. What I did was went to look at my applications and realized I have "SuperUser" now.
When I click that, I have LOG, Apps, and settings, the only thing listed is settings. How can I remove certain bloatware that I don't need?
Get titanium backup so you can uninstall bloatware- if you pay $6 you can freeze the bloatware instead of removing it completely.
A program like Root Explorer can help you get rid of the bloatware as well. Just navigate to System/APP and delete what you don't want. Just be carefull not to delete the wrong software, I think there is a list in one of the threads here of what is safe to get rid of.
Yeah, just get an App manager that uses root access (I use Anttek App Manager). You can either freeze such apps or delete them entirely. You can also change CPU speed, and eventually upgrade to CM7 when it's released, and quite a few other things!
Before doing anything though, I'd recommend backup up your phone with Rom Manager.
Okay, so your steps should be this....
First download ROM manager to back up my system?
Then I download app manager so I can freeze/delete? Freezing might be safer for a newb like me.
that is what I did
I backed up the phone using ROM manager, but where can I find where that backup is to make sure I did it successfuly?
If you are thinking about getting into some serious tinkering, custom ROMs, Kernels, etc. You will probably want to use the NVFlash method to load in clockwork recovery. This method and a good backup of your system should help bail you out of the most circumstances.
Yes, but I'm not sure where to find the backup? I want to make sure the backup was successful. Please someone help
Backups will be found in the clockworkmod/backups folder. Check there to make sure u are doing it right and have a backup.
What can you do with root? As a beginner I would recommend you go slow:
1- Install interesting apps that require root: http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/07/13/8-great-apps-every-rooted-android-user-should-know-about/
2- Learn how to make and restore nandroid backups w/ Clockworkmod Recovery.
3- Freeze bloatware with Titanium Backup Pro.
4- Eventually get to flashing custom ROMs once we get some !
Backup should be on your external sd card in a folder called clockworkmod/backup

I backed it up, went to clockworkmod and my backup, but it doesn't say anything when I click it, neither does it show up in the manage and restore backup
bump, anyone?
try again?

why would you do this to your phone and have no idea what it does or how to take advantage of it?
that's like hotflashing a bios just because it sounds cool.
I'm new to it and want to freeze bloatware? And plus, I can google on how to do stuff and "take advantage" of it =) Thanks
And I just made a back-up and that one is not showing up, gave it a name and everything, would the best thing to do is to uninstall rom manager and install it?

that sound like an easy way to get in over your head
rofl, i still can't get even make a backup, i tried making the back-up twice, and it's showing me the first one, but when I go to manage/restore, it doesn't come up
Do u have an sdcard mounted? If not u need one.
How To: Backup Your Apps, Data & Settings BEFORE You Root/Change ROMs on Your Device!
I recently rooted my Evo 4G and since I had been using it for a while didn't want to lose all of my settings and data and didn't want to sit for hours installing apps and trying to set them each up the way I had them beforehand. None of the root guides that I've found seem to cover this critical first step before they get into the process of rooting the device. So a lot of people root and flash a new ROM and then realize all of their stuff is gone. So, here's how to back everything up before you root or change ROMs:
1) Locate/Download/Install Z4Root to your device. (It appears as though it was removed from the market due to people using it to get temp root in order to use hot spot tethers. The apk can be found in a thread on this forum here)
2) Install Titanium Backup from the market (I recommend the full version because it makes the restore process a one touch option whereas the free one requires you to click 'Install' and then 'confirm' for each individual app which can be a royal PITA if you have lots of apps)
3) Install 'Root Check' from the market
4) Launch Z4 and use to gain temporary root access of your device. Use Root Check to make sure you indeed do have root access.
5) Launch Titanium Backup and grant superuser permissions where necessary
6) Click the center option at the top of the screen after Titanium checks all possible scenarios. Scroll through the options and find the option (usually has the highest number on the right... or real close to it) that backs up all your apps + system data and settings. Allow it to complete this process which can take a bit.
7) Once this is complete back out of Titanium Backup and reboot your device. This will remove the temporary root access from the device. When the device has settled run Root Check one last time to make sure don't have root access.
8) Proceed with your favorite root/ROM process & enjoy not having to waste hours setting up your phone again the way you had it. When you recover make sure you chose the option to recover all missing apps and all data/settings because if you choose to recover ALL apps you can run into issues with the apps it tries to override.
Now, sometimes there are minor issues from ROM to ROM or device to device when you backup from one platform and then recover on another but for the most part it will save you a LOT of time. You can also try a reboot or two after you recover which can help with some settings that don't show up immediately after a recover. I did this before rooting my Evo 4G and it worked flawlessly.
Thanks and hopefully that helps.
Cool. I never thought about backing up while in temp root. Good find.

Should be fine as it's still just app data. I haven't personally tested it to confirm though so proceed at your own risk.

Now that you have root you have 2 options I'm aware of for our device. What your trying to accomplish is a link between your actual data folder where apks get installed by default on your internal memory to a replicated directory on your external storage. The device will install data to its default location but then this link will just move it for you to the mirrored directory. Zedomax and tweaker have both made a script to do this. Tweakers script seems to be a cleaner better method but is more user intensive to implement. Zedos script, which im using now is simple to use and it gets the job done. I've had no issues using it on any rom that has init.d support. Stock firmware will not work however, even with root so you'll need to install a rom with init.d support. Theres the recent stock jelly bean in android dev that has this now. Also our dev community has been busy and you got a few choices if youd like a custom rom as well.
To make that happen youll need a custom recovery that youll install with a pc program called odin. Thats a simple procedure shouldnt take more than a few minutes. Also you could do the same with an android app called mobile odin though I haven't done it this way myself so I may not be the best person to ask how. After the recovery has been installed youd want to backup your stock rom then flash your init.d supported rom of choice after a full wipe, then once thats completed flash zedos script, reboot and then everyones favorite: profit!!
If your still reading this at this point and thinking youd like to give it a shot let me know, I can point you to the relevant threads and maybe fill in some blanks on some areas where you need to read between the lines. Good luck and know I think its worth the time my redemption install is terrific, definitely an improvement over stock jellybean imo.
Hello I've a Lava Iris 405 running Android 4.1.2 on a Mediatek processor. Likely you haven't heard the product name since its India specific. Still Id like to know how to remove preinstalled apps ? They gave me Facebook twitter rock stand and other crap. Together with three useless games they total up to around 80 MB of the 512 MB available on internal memory.
It'd be great if I could get rid of them permanently as I'm not sure I'll miss any of them or that any are integral to the system. I checked system<apps which listed the core apps but there was no trace of these crapware.
Help please. A non command line solution would be preferred since I'm a coding noob.

You may need to root your phone to remove preinstalled apps. If you goto manage apps and hit "all apps" you may be able to remove it there or at best, delete data and remove updates. If this is no use you will need to root your phone and use a third party app to remove an application. If you want to remove a game, that should be fine but if you want to remove an app you think you don't need but the risk is it maybe important to the operating system. in this case it would be better to freeze the app and see if your device works fine for a few days. If you can do everything as normal, the chances are it is safe to delete.
Be warned that some pre installed apps cannot be retrieved from app stores so if you decide you want it or them back, you would have to factory reset your device or reinstall whichever rom you removed it from.
Hope this helps... you should google or use the search here for answers as this type of question has been done a million times thus the solution has been fully answered too, many many times.

2.install costum recovery
3.take nandroid backup
4.install titanium backup
5.u can uninstall app from titanium backup and take backup in sd card also...

Thanks. I primarily want to get rid of Facebook Twitter Rockstand and three games (FlyBoy Private Sheep and Cricket fever). Don't think any of them are system critical.
My device is rooted using the scatter file method, with CWM and Root Explorer installed. Honestly I don't give a damn about warranty since the company isnt exactly Samsung or Nokia.

Hey guys, i am interested in maximising my HTC One Mini 601s storage space and have seen this but i am unsure if i would be able to use it on my phone, or how to for that matter.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2348256
Straight out of the box the storage is 5.2GB / 16.00GB used and id love to remove the bloatware apps but for some reason using titanium backup with root access wont get rid of them (they just appear again after reset)
Im pretty novice in the ways of android at the moment so i dont want to go deleting files using root explorer and brick my phone.
I thought about putting on the magio rom, but i hear it can potentially be unstable or mysteriously drain battery life.
I guess what i am asking is, what is the best way to bring my phone right back to stock android, remove bloat and maximise space?
I'm using Magio R3 and haven't had any battery issues. For me the best version of android for our phones, though I only used stock for a couple of weeks before rooting. I'm able to use the JMZ kernel which has some nice touches, and I don't suffer any wierd bugs. Though with this version a few paid apps are blocked from play store. But easy enough to grab else where and send them a cheque in the post. Magio has some apps removed but not all that can be. I'm still testing which can be removed and which can't.
Anyways.. Only had a glance at this rom cleaner but it might just be for Samsung phones. You wanna search for a HTC one. Personally I don't like these system app removal scripts. They always take something you use and leave stuff you don't. Plus they can still brick your phone if not specifically designed for your phone.
Personally I make a nandroid backup and use Titanium Backup to remove system apps. If you find an app your unsure about Google it, there are a lot of descriptions for all the htc apps on Google.

Thanks for the reply Ruffbuster,
Ill keep away from ROM cleaners since i can only find a htc one x version.
I don't think i am ready to replace a kernel, but installing the Magio rom could be on the cards later.
I have two questions though
1) Can i completely 'format' my internal storage before i put on the rom, or will that just brick the phone
2) Any idea why Rooted Titanium Backup cant uninstall bloatware (they just re-appear upon reset)

When you are i recovery ready to flash your new ROM, if you want to COMPLETELY loose all your user data, then you wipe a factory reset, then FORMAT data, it will ask you to type "yes" to make sure you actually want to do this....
You can't get rid of the system apps as the system is write-protected - this can be made read/write by either s-off (advanced) or flashing a custom rom (Magio) with the custom kernel built-in.
To debloat, check my post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2568061
Say thanks if this helps!!!
You both deserve a thanks, I didn't see that button haha.
Okay so turning S-OFF, I can only assume doing so will also practically roll out a red carpet to hacks and viruses, and that unrevoked forever app seems to make it easy to turn it off, but instructions are vague at turning it back on.
Just out of curiosity, is there a wiki for general android hacking and terminology?
And i will try your custom romcleaner file, it sounds promising since you recommended it to someone with a HTC One Mini
You guys are great, thanks for being so helpful
I assume you are rooted? If so, I can give you a step by step guide to s-off, back to s-on etc - it's easy to do, I've just taken out all the tech talk etc....
You won't become open to hacks, viruses - quite the opposite in fact, as you will be able to install adware and malware blockers etc.
PM me if you want to try....

Yeah dude i rooted it and its got superuser 1.0.2.8 installed
Perhaps later, its 11PM and im on painkillers for an ear infection so its not the prime time to be messing with my phone
Is there anything wrong with using moonshine/rumrunners/unrevoked
they seem fairly straight forward methods
I'm not keen on that method - the binary involved, revone, is 400kb, rumrunners download is 25MB.... Personally I'm not keen on "wizards" doing things you can't control.... Plus, you never learn if everything is automated... Hehe! Either way, feel free to give me a shout if you want advice or help.... Take it easy....
