Something I just noticed with my Nexus 5 - reading an article on a browser window that's all white, I sometimes see the backlight level change suddenly for no reason. The phone is set to max brightness, auto brightness is off, so no change should be happening.
The change is very slight, but it's definitely happening.
Anyone else see this happening?
EDIT: Just reproduced this - opened Gmail, scrolled down a few times to force load of a few pages, waited, brightness stepped up a notch by itself.
The first time, it happened after about 16 seconds, the second time after about 25 seconds.
It might be tied to processor activity and power usage, I'm thinking.

Hmm, saw this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2516915
Looks like the more phone-tech-knowledgeable among us have seen it too.

Is anyone else having issues with the auto screen brightness? I'm in bed now with all the lights off and my screen is at it's brightest. As far as I can remember, the screen has never gone dim for me. I have always had to do it manually.

Same problem here.

Mine seems to work. I always thought it worked based on where the bar is set prior to the checkmark.

I use Quick Settings to adjust the brightness. The auto on this phone definitely isn't working correctly.
Mine works just fine. Dim when it's bright around me, bright when it's dark around me.

I feel like mine does change some, but it never seems like it's a really accurate change to the condition... or maybe I just think it does, hmm.

That's backwards. You want the brightness down when it's dark, because less light is needed to see the screen, and up when it's light, because more brightness is needed to see the screen.
I as well have had issues with the auto brightness. It never seems to change. I manually set it, or leverage a widget.
Mine works but it adjusts too frequently. It was annoying to see it going brighter and dimmer every minute or two so I tuned it off and use a widget.
Thanks, Robrecht

Glad to see I'm not crazy and imagining things. Very surprised at how many little quirks HTC let slip by on the thunderbolt.

I have always disliked auto-brightness. At night when I'm reading a book in bed, it is just way too bright at the lowest auto-bright setting. Though it was nice to automatically brighten up when I'm outside. Now days, I just stick an Android power control on the home screen and manage it myself. 0% for when I'm in bed reading books, 30% for normal every day use, 100% for when I'm outside. It seems to help the battery quite a bit too.
Its best to adjust it manually anyways... Just add a widget on your home screen lolz
What's best is not always whats preferred. It's little things like auto not working that make me miss my cyanogen'd droid 1

Same, but I came from a CM Eris
Hey everybody...
I just got a new note & everything is excellent except that I've been noticing some weird flickering in the screen... Its not even flickering, its more like it goes dark for milliseconds & its not that frequent. Should i be conserned or its a software issue... does anyone have such an issue?

Have you got auto brightness enabled? If so try manually setting the brightness, also check your screen timeout in setting /display set it to a 1min not 15secs

Auto brightness is off. The same issue is happenning with my galaxy s3.

Go into Developer Options in Settings and set animations to .5x.

Take it back. It may be a defect.

I dont think it is. Because on the home screen & some apps like youtube the issue is nonexistent, Strange

I have not seen this issue yet. Had mine since launch.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
After some testing I found out that the screen issue is related to some apps only such as chrome & xda's app. Most other apps work just fine such as s note, photoshop, youtube, all games & the home screen shows no flickeri g whatsoever.

I have seen this, I was worried but it is very difficult to return my unit as it is a grey import.
I totally didn't notice that it went away after changing screen timeout to 1 minute. Battery life is good enough to easily cope with this.
Setting back to 15 seconds to see if it re-occurs.
fyi, I leave brightness auto.

I can confirm that the problem is solved. The whole issue is that some apps are conflicting with the hover function for the s pen. Once you disable that function in settings all becomes completly normal without any issues.

I have the similar issue on my Note 10.1 - the browser is the biggest 'flasher' and it seems random. I called Samsung support - They had me reset to factory and the issue went away, but eventually came back. I don't want to have to keep resetting to factory as that is painful for me to reconfig everything and I tend to believe that if I restore to ClockWorkMod backup, the issue will still be there.
Hi.
l had the same problem earlier. Simply deactivate the hovering S - Pen icon, and voila!

Anyone having issues with auto brightness not functioning correctly? Many times ill notice it seems pretty bright for such a dark room. Fiddle with the brightness slider and then click auto and it's back to correct auto brightness. Happens on all jb roms I've used. Forget if I had this issue with gb and ics

Default values are too bright for me, adjusted them down to a reasonable level. (on CM10)
Hey guys again, I found a bit more information on this problem. Noticed while I was in bed with phone and it on auto brightness, when I turn screen on, it "recalculates" and even though it's a pitch black room, gives me maybe 30% more light? When I toggle brightness in my power widget through and back to auto it corrects and goes to lowest brightness. Any thoughts?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
Mine works, but I had to tweak the default settings. By default, it only checks the ambient light sensor when you unlock the screen. I changed it to periodically sample so that it dims/brightens as the screen is on but ambient lights changes (e.g. Turning off bedside lamp).

Where exactly did you go to do that?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Don't remember everything, but here's my Settings/Display/AutomaticBacklight that I think are involved:
Enabled: checked
Window: 5s
Reset threshold: disabled
Sample interval: 1s
...
Allow light decrease: checked
...

I was about to upload my screen shots into the battery thread when I realized that my WiFi had been used. But it's been manually turned off since the day I got the phone as you can see. You can check the screen shots. Any one have any ideas?

You have to go into the wifi settings and uncheck the always scan. Its under the advanced wifi settings.
Settings, wifi, advanced, "scanning always available" makes your wifi available for location purposes even if you have it "off" in settings. Do you have this box checked?
Go into WiFi settings and then go to advanced settings and disable "Scanning always available".

Strange, my always scan is off on my n4 and WiFi had been off all day at work. When I got home you could see where it had been on briefly throughout the day, not to concerned but I suspect always scan isn't being disabled fully when it's unchecked?

I had this exact same issue and was going to post on this 'bug'. It can really drain your battery over night! Luckily, unchecking the 'always on' feature under Advanced really did make the timer stop ticking.
Tell me about it. noticed this on 4.3 - its a battery killer
when you first login it says wifi will be scanned and used to better determine location even when off ... I clicked that permission off in my initial loading of the phone...curious if that is the issue?
Anyone have a problem were the music is playing but cant hear it sometimes ?
Mine has the same issue no matter what settings I use.

What do you use for brightness. Auto? Full? 50%? Share!
Full looks best but image burn could be an issue with IPS displays..
Auto I feel like it jumps around too much depending on your lighting situation

Seems as though this thread should be in General Discussion.
At any rate, I usually steer towards Auto Brightness. On my Nexus 5, auto works just fine. Roughly 65% looks good to me and that's where mine usually stays with auto.
Why not add a Poll?
I never use Auto. Currently set to ~50%
Most of the time I'm almost at the minimum (indoors) and use Lux to adjust the brightness to a fixed level when I'm outside.
Can't add a poll :/ idk how to be honest. I tried editing the post on the website. Still nothing.
