[Q] Any way to make MX video the default for ALL video? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Picked up the N5 yesterday. Installed Mx Video thinking that everything would work as it did with my two previous EVOs and s3. I would choose MX as the default for video streaming and it would work throughout every website, all local media, etc. Now when I stream through various sites, the default video player or chrome wants to play video. Cleared defaults, cleared data and cache for MX, uninstalled, reinstalled, cleared cache/dalvik, fixed permissions. Chrome or the default video still wants to take over.
Any ideas?

I think there's a setting buried deep in MX Player's settings area that pertains to default apps for local and network streaming. Check those out.

Went through every option. Couldn't find said option :\

Just set it as the default when you open up a file. It can't be that hard... there are what, like 3 or 4 common video file extensions?

This is what I thought too. Not all apps(chrome) make you pick default. Sometimes they automatically just play in chrome

Audio but no video? Also, Play Store disappeared?

Stock unhacked 32gb black.
For AVIs and MKVs, I've always used BSplayer without problems. I've put my first videos on the Nexus 5 today, and AVI and an MKV, and they play perfectly fine, except without video.
I got the impression this is a problem with my Nexus 5, but so I naturally cleared the BSplayer's app data and cache and uninstalled, rebooted the device, and reinstalled just to rule out a bad install as the problem. Sure enough, no video again.
So I go through the ritual of clearing, uninstalling, and rebooting, and tried to grab a different media player from the store to rule out media players as the problem, but this time I don't have the Play Store! WTF? I just reset my device and I'll keep you guys posted, but is anyone else having or hearing about these problems? Particularly the lack of video playback, because I can just side load the Play Store if I don't feel like resetting the device.
After resetting device, still no video playback in BSplayer, even after switching decoding modes. MXplayer is able to play the MKV file perfectly, but crashes with the AVI...
I am having same issue. BS Player is my go to. I don't have video when streaming along w local files.

Cannot play video from ES file explorer smb share.

Hi,
I have a NAS that share video file with smb, I used to open these files in ES file explorer and it will give me the option to open it in MX player. Recently I got my Nexus 6P with Android 6.0.1, and there is no such option anymore. The video will always default to use es file explorer video play. Anyway I can fix this?
Update:
I noticed in the app details page on the phone there is a "Open by default" option and inside there is "supported links" which has the value "*" . Maybe this is the cause? I used to developed an app that forwards intent to mx player and if I use "*" it will not work. I had to provide mime type so mx play show in the open list. Another thing I noticed is the problem is not only for MX player but for all other video streaming supported players. So it must be something changed in Marshmallow.
Thanks.

Is this a empty answer?
@ktsamy seems your post got posted blank.
Regarding the OP, hmm, I wonder if instead the problem is on ES's side. I don't know much about this area, though.
Same here, I can't get to make mx player appear in the list of players capable of playing a video from a smb share or a local dlna renderer
Issue still exists.

@CDB-Man
The issue is from the android itself.
There are 2 major issues.
1. Android 6 has a issue which will lead to disappearance of Apps. If you set app as default & Then clearing the defaults, many apps including MX, BS, VLC have disappeared from open with list. There is no way to bring them back other than uninstalling/disabling the app which you have set as default earlier in order to bring the missing apps back to list. The issue was reproducible even in Stock Nexus devices. But, it was fixed in 6.0.1
2. Pathpattern no longer works with many third party apps in newer android versions when host is set to *. This is one of the major issue. But, When you remove the host entry as you suggested, some apps will list MX Player incorrectly for unknown contents for a unknown reason. One more thing is that Google Chrome & Stock brower doesn't list the app for video files when it's removed. So, it can't be removed straight away.
BTW, after lot of test & trails I have found the solution for the issue. I have forwarded the same to the MX Player developer as well. It's now fixed on MX Player code base. Next update will bring the fix to both issues.
Thanks for your effort. My workround is to make MX player default for all required file types by opening files from local storage. Than MX Player will be default for smb files too.

[BUG] or [PROBLEM]: since phone update, MX Player no longer default for browsers HELP

Background: Purchased MX Player Pro. Watch a lot of video in my mobile web browsers Chrome and Dolphin. Often for work (training). Used to be that in either mobile browser, I would browse to the video and when I told it to play MX Player Pro would be the player in which I watched the video, which is critically important and MX Player has video controls (like swiping to go forward and backward) that the system video player doesn't.
This morning my Galaxy Note 5 from Verizon got an update, update N920VVRU2BPG5. Since then, in both browsers on my phone, the video only play in the craptastic system video player. I've looked for a way to change that default and I do not see any options. Again, what I am trying to do is make it be the way it was, with videos played from either of my mobile web browsers Chrome and Dolphin being launched in MX Player by default, not the system video player it seems to have defaulted back to. (To be clear, we are NOT talking about setting a FILE default).
I don't know that this is considered a bug or not, but it's a giant problem.
What's the solution?
Thanks.
This *may* be a a different kind of thing, I've done some more testing in Dolphin and found that when I enable Dolphin Jetpack for Flash, it goes back to working properly. I'm not sure why, my two conjectures are either:
a) MX Player is not in the mix at ALL, but that the recent update swapped my browsing player from Flash based to HTML5 based, and HTML5 video players do not (possibly) support swipe gestures, or
b) By switching Dolphin Jetpack for Flash on, it enable dolphin to properly router the video playback to the MX Player.
Either way, that seems to be the fix for Dolphin, now I have to see if a similar fix can be applied to Mobile Chrome.
Thanks.
@sindyr
If chrome plays on itself it may not possible. If it's forwarded to stock player it might be different issue raised from Samsung's idiotic implementation of default apps.
FYI, in almost all samsung marshmallow devices if you select a app it's always set as default. Unlike LP there won't be a option to select once. Just go to Application Manager > Select Video (If Stock Player is default). From the "Set Defaults" option "Clear Defaults" & set the App Links to always ask. Now, Chrome will ask again to select. But, keep in mind that when you select the any other app it will be the new default.
It's not possible to intercept a html5 video from a browser. Nowadays most of the browsers are implementing their own mediaplayer based on android mediaplayer API.

Default video app settings missing in my Android 7 now? SOLVED!

Just today 17th February 2017 Nougat OS had been working fine since installed on 11th Feb but today I could not play video files from within other apps ie whatsapp where it had been work fine. Videos open up but will not play and when I went into the Honor Video app properties via settings I noticed in Open By Default there is No Default set now and there used to be.
But if I open the video app directly and play a video they play or open video from a folder the also play..
Did try with another video app VLC same problem...
Anyone had this problem..
UPDATE.... Fixed now!
Uninstalled WA, VLC and reinstall WA and restore the backup of WA, videos play now with Honor Video player. So went ahead and install VLC again and videos play now and the option to select video player is back..
Oh well all good for now

Not seeing such problem on my H8 (L09 with B360), it could be bug of other app, most probably the video player.
When you tap on a video in Whatsapp to play it, does it prompt you to choose a video player to use? If you don't see this prompt then you probably had already set a default player. Go to Settings > Apps, check on all the video player you've installed to see if it's set as default player, if yes then you can click on the Clear Default button to clear it.
After that you can tap on a video again in Whatsapp to set a new default video player, or like me, just use the "Just Once" option and don't set any default player.

Changing the default video player

My previous phones were a Samsung S2 & S4, and one of the features I found useful, was being able to change the default video player (usually to MX Player). However, on my G7 Power, I can't seem to be able to do this, and there isn't a video player option in the app defaults.
Is there a way of doing this within the OS, or with a 'hack' ?

I can change the default player to VLC or x-ploer without any issue.
There is an option when you first time open a video file let you choose which program to play it as default

I don't get that option on my G7. If I go into Files, and pick a video, it just opens with the default player; to open it with another video player, I have to select a video and then go to the three dots at the top, and choose Open with.
I have tried resetting the default apps, but that didn't give me the option of picking a default video player, it just stopped half my apps working, as they lost their permissions

From app management to clear the default app , you are ready to go.
It was because you already selected the default player at the first run (or you didn't have the second player installed at the first run), so you won't see the option again until you clear the default
Here my moto G7 power, it still has option to choose which player can be chosenView attachment 5046801
Unfortunately I can't see your attachment, if I click on the link, I just get the message "Invalid Attachment specified"
When I look in Default Apps, I don't have any default apps for video - see attached screenshot

When you installed a second video player, next time to click a compatible video file , you should see the option to choose the player , also there would be a "default" option's check box

I have now tried UPlayer & Xplayer, and clicked on a mp4 file in my downloads (in Files app), and it still always open the default video player. I tried granting one access permission beforehand, but that didn't help. There is still no video player showing in default apps either. I can't find any reference to the default/stock video player in the apps list or recent apps, so I can't even disable it, maybe it is part of the files app?

Were you ever able to solve this issue? I'm having the same problem with my G7 Plus. Even if I remove/disable all the apps in the "Open With" menu, something else is still always opening videos by default.
