[Q] photo viewer via otg cable and card reader - HTC Inspire 4G

Running "Random Rom". Specs say it supports otg cable. Trying to use sd card reader to view trail camera pics. The reader did not power up (led indicator) so I built a y cable to use power from laptop to verify the sys would operate. Got the reader to power up. Using Otg helper or stick mount from the app store neither recognized a drive. If it were to work I was going to get an portable battery source to get power for the reader. The card reader is an old one but works fine when hooked to a computer.
Has anyone been able to do what I am trying?
Do I need a newer reader?
Any info would be appreciated.

Card Reader and Other USB devices

I have a quick question. I have TnT lite 2.2 installed on my Gtab. If I plug in a USB thumbdrive, I can find the files on the Gtab. If I use a USB card reader, I cannot see where the files come up. I have gone through every folder, and the reader simply does not show up (yes, with a card in the reader).
Also, do all USB devices work? Where do they show up?
I am used to PC work, so getting used to this tablet is a bit of work

I tried that folder and it did not recognize the reader. The folder was empty.

try and reboot and then plug it in. if it still doesn't work, then maybe it just doesn't read the reader. only reads usb drives directly. it would be in the usbdisk folder btw.
Also keep in mind a lot of card readers (if not all) act like a bunch of drives even when there's nothing installed in them. That's why Windows pre-reserves drive letters for every slot on the gadget.
Readers like that may not work due to lack of proper drivers in Android ? Just a guess.
I don't have a portable SD reader at the moment (time for a DX order, I think). But, I have a microSD reader - one of those pen drives where you can add a microSD to it. That works fine in the VEGAn build, and I believe TnT Lite as well.
Tried the card reader for the CF cards from my camera. Had to plug the cable in 2 times but the card was seen and readable.

Was it a dedicated CF card reader or one of the multi readers? I have a multi reader I tried but couldnt get to come up. I am looking into a dedicated reader to see if that works.
It was a dedicated CF reader.
Since there is more than one slot, and Windows treats them as more than one drive, I would assume that one of the slots gets assigned as /usbdisk and the others are ignored. You are probably using one of the slots that is ignored.
Hopefully when we get the source, we can address these kinds of issues.
So essentially to get this to work, one needs to have just a dedicated reader for whatever style of memory card in use?
Cryofix in IRC has said that his 5-1 card reader worked. USB hubs work, so I don't see why these wouldn't. If you can, try putting a card in all of the slots to see if one is detected and then you'll know priority. There may be a way to remount the drives to different orders, but I have no idea how you would.
If you're rooted and have shell access you could manually mount the drives provided they're seen. They should be seen, I've had 6 devices hanging off a hub for mine and other than not knowing how(or not having the driver) to mount the DVD's UDF/ISO filesystem they all worked.
Count me in among the TnT Lite users who haven't yet figured out how to get their SD card reader to be recognized or mount. Mine has an LED on it that doesn't light up, leading me to believe it's not receiving power.

USB Stick Mounting

Anyone running Vegan build able to mount a USB stick to access files?
I've got a 50 in 1 USB reader that I am using.

Yep. 16, 32 and 64gb work fine for me.
Mounts memory stick without problem.
My suggestion would be to place the card into the reader first and then insert the stick into the USB port. If you do it the other way around i have had trouble.
Solved
Thanks for confirming. I did some experimenting. I originally had a micro SD card installed and tried rebooting and powering up from cold with and without the USB reader with no success.
I decided to remove the micro SD card and try the USB reader which worked great. Maybe there was something with the cached data preventing the USB reader from working. The red light on the USB reader was illuminated but it wouldn't mount it in /mnt/usbdisk.
After removing the micro SD card and inserting the USB reader everything works fine. I have them both inserted now and I can view all the files at ones from both locations
Thanks again for confirming.

[Q] Connect Sony ebook reader as a USB drive to the Transformer?

As I am using the asus pad as my primary device when at home or travelling, I would like to be able to connect my Sony ebook Reader to the Pad via the USB connection on the keyboard and transfer files like with a normal USB drive. This works like a charm on my work pc, when connected the Ebook Reader shows up as a usb drive and I can move my books around. Howver when I try to connect to the pad, the reader is charged and on the reader it says it is connected via usb, however no removable drive shows up in the file manager. Anyone know how I could get this to work?
Thanks
Noone have any suggestions? Would really love to be able to push books onto the reader from the transformer.

[Q] micro usb to usb adapter

Here's a cross post from the Mesmerize thread where I'm not having any luck:
I have a 2.2.1 (rooted) Mesmerize and I can't get it to recognize anything plugged into the Samsung Micro USB to USB Adapter I just bought.
The phone is set to "Mass Storage" for USB and I've tried both USB Debugging on and off.
I can't get it to recognize any of 5 thumb drives that I've tried connecting to it. So either it's a bad cable, or something else in the phone is preventing the connection. Help, please!
EDIT: I'm possibly naive in assuming that this (reading a USB thumb drive from the phone) will work at all, but since they (Samsung) sell the cable and tout it as being capable of it, I must just be missing something such as a setting or the necessary version of Android or a wonderful hack from this group.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
What you are asking for is a USB host function on your phone. As far as I know there is none for the Mesmerize or android. The cable is to connect your device with a pc or other that does have usb host drivers.
there are probably other, better ways of getting extended storage. what exactly are your trying to accomplish?
I just figured it would be cool to read off a thumb drive (or usb card reader set up as a thumb drive with an sd card or micro sd card attached) from my phone. For instance, if I'm out somewhere and I take a picture with my camera and I immediately want to get that picture from the camera to the phone (without using a pc as a bridge)... I could just remove the sd card from the camera, plug it into my card reader, plug my card reader into the micro usb to usb adapter and then plug that into the phone. Whereupon the phone would recognize a thumb drive is attached and let me navigate it the way I navigate the internal micro sd card.
yeah I don't think usb hosting was available until 3.1
I don't even know how easy it is with newer devices.
What about with a custom mod/ROM?
mad towner,
i would like to know how did u root ur phone. i have a tab with same os as yours. but i find it very difficult to root.
thanks in advance.

OTG not working. Anyone help?

I've tried a few different otg cables and none seem to recognise the sd card reader. Is there a setting I need to enable to get it working?
Thanks in advance.

I don't have an sd card reader handy, but my fat32 usb key works fine for both reading and writing, although I had to use File Commander as EStrong File Explorer incorrectly states that it supports FAT32 and NTFS; it doesn't.
Sony Xperia Z3 USB OTG
I can confirm that with the Nexus Media Importer app, the Sony Xperia Z3 can read & write to NTFS file systems. I have a USB OTG "Y" cable (a female micro USB port for extra power). Without the paid app though, the Z3 can only read exFAT and FAT32 file systems, stating the NTFS as an "unsupported file system". As an added bonus, the smartphone is able to charge itself if you charge it by the magnetic port! I have a Deff magnectic adapter. Another device that can power an external USB OTG device while charging itself is my Google Nexus 5 with a special USB OTG "Y" adapter.
