Backing up APNs - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm just curious if we need to backup APNs on a Nexus. I just setup the T-Mobile $30 plan and was wondering if I need to backup or write down my APNs before I flash a kernel or ROM.
Thanks in advance

There are apps on Google Play that store all APN`s on your phone.

This I know, I'm just curious if it's necessary when wiping and flashing a new ROM to back them up.

Usualy they don`t get wiped, but it might be good to write down the settings, its better to be safe than sorry.

I've taken screenshots of my APN settings and keep them on my phone. I always have to put them in manually after flashing a rom

Help With Nandroid To New Device

So I cracked my N5 and got a new one today. Did a Nadroid via CWM on the old phone and was looking to transfer to the new and then restore. I see that it's located in /mnt/etc/etc/ but I can't tell if I'm transferring it correctly or not.
I'm doing adb push (file) to /mnt/etc/ but since it's almost a 2gb file, I can't tell if it's working or if it's crashed out.
Is what I'm doing correct? I'm hoping once the transfer is done, I can just restore in RomManager.
Thanks guys!

First of all do not use Rom Manager as it is a buggy, unstable and crappy app. Uninstall it immediately and never use it again Flash CWM or Philz Touch CWM to make or restore a backup. Just place the nandroid you made via usb in the /clockworkmod/backup/ file and see if you can restore it in recovery.
- Edit- as @rootSU said don`t restore EFS or it will mess up you`re phone. Can you restore apps with Tit. Backup or Helium or adb?

I wouldn`t restore the backup cause the EFS files of your former and current phone are different. You will mess up your phone severely. Its best to restore your apps by other means.
So what's the best way to "clone" my broken device to the new one?
If you're using philz, you wont be backing up efs by default so restoring nandroid is fine. Can't talk for TWRP though

Unless you we`re able to isolate and delete your old EFS files from the backup and replace them with your current one i wouldn`t do it. Don`t know if thats possible and i wouldn`t know how to do that myself anyway. I`d just restore the apps and its data and set it up as you want to. Maybe someone else can give you better advice but thats what i can tell you.
Backed up and restored and everything appears to be going great! Thanks guys!
Is there a main thread for Philz so I can familiarize myself?

I am glad I can finally get the right date and time on my backups plus it adds the ROM name and version +1. :good:

In the Time settings, I set the Time Zone for my region and Time Zone offset to +0 min and used the Qualcom Time Daemon to get the current date and time.
That is what worked for me.
There is another recommended way?

I would say no. I just remember some people doing this would and it replaced IMEI information from previous phone and could potentially screw up your new phone. What is so important that you need to restore for TWRP anyways. A fresh flash on a new phone is the best route to take my friend
We make too much of simply taken the time to restore and reset things on a new flash.

HMMMMMMMM... The OPO only backs up: boot, data, system and cache. It does not backup EFS nor would i check it on the restore menu,

cool and yeah I know that but I just dont see the reason to take the risk at all. I see so many take shortcuts and then we have a million how do I fix this that and the third threads. Glad it worked for you
I was going to say yes even if I never tried it as nand only backs up system, boot and data which should be no problem to copy and paste to a same model phone...you tried it first by yourself so good move

Shouldn't be a problem part of restoring to stock on some other phones is flashing a twrp backup and stock recovery. It shouldn't be a problem atall
As long as your not restoring EFS your fine. I have done this many times on many different phones.

Files Not Being Recognized

I have a Nexus 5 that I have had since December that has been functioning flawlessly (Google replacement for my last one with busted glass)
I have not done anything to this device (no hacking, no ROMSs, no rooting), beside replace the battery....
A few days ago, I noticed that a bunch of my "custom" ringtones were not working anymore. They just stopped showing up on the ringtone picker. The same goes for my "custom" alarm tones. I also noticed that when I go to attach a picture (to a hangout message, or SMS) that the "Recent" category shows only 1 or 2 pictures (instead of all recent pics). However, when I use RootExplorer and look at the directories, all of the files are there. The ringtones, alarms, pictures, etc. In fact the only pictures that are showing up under the "Recent" category are the ones that have been taken since I began having the problem.
There is also some other weird things happening, like I have lost some contact pictures and the phone has been acting weird.
This phone got the 5.1 update and I have already tried to wipe the /cache partition. Again, all files are there, but Android is not recognizing them...
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you don't know how to see that then probably it's locked because it comes locked out of the box. So I'm afraid you will have to wipe your device data to fix your issue. If you're still wondering how to see that you must turn off your device and hold volume down + power button, phone will turn on and green Android will appear. At the bottom you will see lock state of bootloader

Yes, it probably will. If you are that worried about it, backup your data first. Odin will work even with the bootloader locked. Locked bootloader does not prevent you from loading official firmware.

You have to go in odin and select PDA and then add the entire md5 file! If you don't want to do it that way, then you have to download a zipping app like 7z or similar and create the .tar yourself.. Which is pointless unless you're planning on flashing 1 file like the boot.img for a reason or other.. The md5 file has all of the files that need to be flashed there's no need to unzip the files. Just flash as is!
If you're downloading from the OP then you need to unzip the file from the .zip because you can only flash .md5 or .tar.

Is it an actual Verizon phone? And do you know for sure that it's Verizon? Go into settings then about phone and tell me what model it says. If it says other than SM-N920V then it's not a Verizon one.. You can only flash firmware for a specific carrier.. Also check the APN settings too.. And about the modem no you don't have to use the same exact one from the same firmware version you can try a different one however I don't think that'll fix the problem.. Try checking the APN settings first.. Also if you just dropped a sim card into it without first giving Verizon the IMEI then it's not gonna work! You'll have to give them the IMEI and if the IMEI is bad the phone will never work at least not with Verizon.

It is indeed n920v clean imei through verizon prepaid. It gets apn through SIM card which is accurate I have signal T all times and internet/mms work. However when I boot my phone or randomly every so often it will say 'searching for service' throughout the day while still full having signal. During this time I don't receive calls/messages/internet notifications and it is stuck that way until I notice it and dial my voicemail which it then displays "Verizon wireless" and then all notifications come through.

Maybe try using this downgraded version from my Android File Host and flash it using odin but before flashing take the sim card out and after it's done flashing immediately do a factory reset by holding the power and volume down button and after the screen turns off and then back on select shut down and then boot into recovery and do the factory reset after it's finished put the sim card back in then turn it on and go through all the setup and see if it works.. Let the phone charge some first don't try doing this at 3% battery cause if it shuts down in the middle it can brick the phone. Not likely but it could.

Wanting to Flash my Note 20 Ultra and I don't know where to start...

I've never flashed a cellphone and I don't even know if I can flash this one. I bought the phone through and when I was still with Sprint. I'm sorry. It was a little late at night and I was trying to put the child down for sleep and was in a hurry. But I'm looking to just flash a stock ROM to get the vendors (Sprint) pre-installed apps off the phone. So I'm not looking to do anything to fancy.
Try flashing non vendor specific rom. But before that simply keep copy of rom which is installed currently, so in case something went wrong, you can restore it.
You can download stock firmware with friza or Sam firmware tool (little search over xda you can find it)
Okay, so I used Frija to get the file and now I'm using Odin to flash it. I have the BL, Ap, Cp, CSC, and USERDATA files. Only issue I have is I have two CSC files and I'm not sure which one to use? One is called HOME_CSC_OMC_OYN_N986UOYN1DUB5_CL20936746_QB38027387_REV00_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5 and the other is CSC_OMC_OYN_N986UOYN1DUB5_CL20936746_QB38027387_REV00_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5. I want to say it's the second one I mentioned but I want to make sure.

What data is the Home file saving? Also what's the USERDATA file?
All other data that you have addled other than factory set.
Some apps install as non system, that known as userdata
Okay, Odin said it passed and my phone restarted to a Android Recovery section giving me a ton of options and now I'm nervous... The options are.
Reboot system now
Reboot to bootloader
Apply update from ADB
Apply update from SD card
Wipe data/factory rest
Wipe cache partition
Mount /system
View recovery logs
Run graphics test
Run locale test
Power off
Repair apps
Do I just want to reboot it?
Okay so I restarted it and the phone works, but everything is still the same. If I do a factory restore will that remove Sprint's apps? Or should I redo the process without adding the CSC and USERDATA files?
Sorry for bumping this but does anybody know the answer to my question?

From what I remember once you flash an unlocked firmware (ie. Not carrier branded) you need to factory reset to remove the carrier stuff from the old firmware
But don't quote me on it, just what I remember reading from others threads, I've not had to try it myself

Which ROM you have downloaded?
If you are flashing same sprint then it will always remain there. Make sure you are flashing unbranded firmware.
