[Q] Total newbie on Android, some simple quesitons. - General Questions and Answers

Hi people of XDA-Developers, I have a few questions to ask about Android, I've been an iOS user for around 3-4 years and I was very familiar with jailbreaking, iOS softwares, and almost everything. I knew what to do on exactly every situation but then I got bored of iOS and then I thought of switching into a better OS and I thought Android was good. Now I'm in Android and I don't understand a single thing about it. Compared to Android, iOS is a lot simpler, easier but also boring. You can play around with the Android but I really don't understand much. By miracle I didn't brick my phone after attempting to Root it, I was so lucky that it worked because I didn't know what I was doing . So here are my info and some questions.
Phone:
-Samsung Galaxy S4 (T-Mobile)
-SGH-M919
-Android 4.2.2
Questions:
1- Ok, so I have Android 4.2.2 on SGH-M919 which is on T-Mobile, I bought the phone on the US but then I left to another country (Panama), I want to upgrade from 4.2.2 to 4.3 and I want to know if it is already available because some websites say that it's coming on the 18th of November. I want to know if it is available.
2- If so, why can't I download it? When I do software update it says that: "Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available", I already used Triangle away to reset the times flashed and it's already on the "System: Official" (it was on "System: Modified") , I've already erased the cache and even factory reset.
3- I've seen somewhere on Google that you can manually update it (with Odin and/or with an external SD card)
4- Not that I really care THAT much about updating but what I want to do is to flash it to a ROM, in this case, the PACman ROM. But it says PACman 4.3 and I don't know if it is possible to use the 4.3 version on the 4.2.2 Android and I won't risk it so I want to know if there is a way around it. I really want to flash it before moving everything from my iPhone to my Galaxy.
I would really appreciate if you answered these questions, the simplest way possible, please and thank you in advance.

You can run PACman 4.3 on the S4, but going from 4.2.2 to 4.3 you should do a full wipe first to prevent any install issues. 4.3 is just an upgraded version of 4.2.2 and is still in the JellyBean series. You can find the PACman Development thread here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2295673

Ohh now I get it, now I updated from 4.2.2 to PAC 4.3.1. I think I understand how this works. The PAC 4.3.1 is just like an update, I thought you had to be on the same version to flash ROMs. Thank you for your response :good:
There's one more question, now that I have PACman, it comes with Trebuchet, I want to know if it's possible to organize the apps in my App Drawer in a custom way, not my name or by the date installed. If yes, how. If no, is there a way around it? If yes, which one. Thank you in advance.

[Q] Updating galaxy tab2 10.1 p5113

Forum members:
I recently user rooted my device per the forum excellent instructions but now am unable to to update the firmware for the android OS. When I get the popup notifying me that an upgrade has been downloaded, I go through the drill of rebooting to the Odin screen and then reboot but am then advised that the upgrade failed and something about using Kies. I user rooted the device in anticipation of installing Ubuntu but haven't done it yet. I intended to be able to dual boot depending on what I am working on. I use the android OS most of the time and it works ok but will not upgrade itself. I have searched the posts regarding the inability to upgrade android when the system is rooted but haven't found anything that I understand or that tells me whether or not it is even possible to upgrade the android OS when user rooted. Can anyone answer the question succinctly and if it is possible point me to instructions on how to do it. Any help is sincerely appreciated.

Hi. That's right, you can't make OTA official updates anymore if you rooted the tablet.
You can however download the new firmware version from sammobile (official non-rooted) or some custom version from XDA, then flash it with odin or mobile odin (for official), or CWM (for custom "zip").
Here's a tutorial for Galaxy Note, but it might work for your tablet too - anyway it gives you an idea of how that can be done. The written procedure is here.
going through the same issue...
I am having the same troubles as the person who started this thread. I rooted my samsung galaxy tab 2 10.1 from the instructions that I found on this forum. I also installed ClockWork Mod recovery as per the rooting instructions. Now that I am hearing that I will be unable to update to jelly bean (official) because I rooted my device what can i do to work around this problem?
What if we reboot into Clock Work Mod recovery and use the option to restore device to stock firmware? If we did that option it would restore the tablet back to its factory resetting and then could we upgrade to Jelly Bean using the "software update" option?
Or is downloading a firmware from sammobile the best option?
I am really not sure about what to do next...
Hope to hear some kind of response on what to do next...
You can get JB stock from sammobile and flash it with odin. Or you can get a custom JB rom from xda and flash it with cwm. There's nothing complicated about upgrading, both ways are good. I would pick the second one, this way you stay rooted.

[Q] Help please!

With the release of Android 4.4 coming, I'm thinking of flashing the latest Cyanogen rom. But, this is my first time owning an Android phone, or any smart phone at all. So I was wondering:
Can I upgrade my Samsung Galaxy S2 SPH-D710BST to the latest version?
If so will I have to reinstall my apps and etc.?
If I use custom firmware can I still activate and use my phone to call? (This is all assuming I still haven't gotten around to activating my phone)
If so will i have to use Boost Mobile to activate my phone? (As indicated by the model number)
Thanks in advance for any advice!

hey there, welcome to the world of android friend! so if you were to have cm 10.2 (android 4.3) on your device and decide when a stable version of 4.4 comes out you want to flash it, you will have to reinstall all your apps, if you were to come from android 4.1 to 4.2 you wouldnt have to reinstall them. android 4.1-4.3 dont have very much changes, just a little of ui change and hardware changes to use left memory. now to see if your galaxy s2 will get 4.4? nobody will know, i dont think anybody knows if cyangenmod will make more roms, they recently annouced something that sounded like they were making their own android handset. if you use custom firmware, yes you can still use it as your phone and activate it, im sure not allot of people would flash roms to not be able to use their phones . i looked up the model number and it looks like the carrier is boost mobile. hope you figure out what you want man, please if you have any questions i would love to answer them, i love to see the notification numbers go up xD
Thanks! I already knew my phone was from Boost, I was just asking if activating it with them was a MUST. Also my phone has that manufacturer's error with the dropping cell signal repeatedly activating the menu. I tried the fix where you clear the cache partition, but that was only a temporary fix.
So, to fix the phone I have to get it repaired at a Sprint?
If so, how much?
Or, alternatively, could re-imaging the phone with a new "OS" fix it? (Only asking since the cache wipe worked for a while.)

[Q] To Upgrade or Not to Upgrade - that is ze question?

Hello, I only got my HTC ONE mini yesterday and its says there is an upgrade to version 2.12.401.1 - thing is I quite like the firmware at the moment that I am on which is 1.32.401.2 and 4.2.2 - now as i see it the new firmware update will put me on 4.3 if i am correct so say after updating i dont like interface of 4.3 then what am i going to do, i mean i wont be able to go back will i without rooting the phone and installing custom rom, so i dunno whether to update or not, i suppose if it had camera enhancements (bit of over-exposing going on and colour too strong) then that might be a good reason to update but i dont honestly know what to do, update or leave it as it is. Any views/opinions?

If I was you, I'd stay where you are - kitkat 4.4.2 will be coming in February - it's a VAST improvement on 4.2 and 4.3..... Unless you actually want to stay on a stock ROM, I'd recommend installing a custom slimmed down kitkat (you'd root and have custom recovery)....

Well after a short research I found a ROM called Resurrection Remix, loaded with 5.0.2 (or Lollipop) however now everything is force closing and I barely got my laptop to see it as MTP again after installing a new Binary (glad that did that trick for that) but I cant get it to boot into CWM Recovery bc I cant access the app the only thing it will let me do right now is change the Binary.
How can I fix this issue?
Edit: Okay so I got that solved with doing a factory reset twice, booted in CWM, loaded up the GApps. Now just wondering if there is away to make it not seen with phone options like the dialer or msgs as its jus a plan old tablet, doesnt take a sim card and has no carrier. I do have the source code but I am not tweaking that til I get a better understanding of it.
After a lot of research and tries (amazingly without bricking) I am now running an even newer version of a CM 13 Marshmellow

How to upgrade & root Note 10.1 N8013, running stock 4.1.2?

Hello all! OK, I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (GT-N8013) that I'm still using and love, still running stock everything (Android 4.1.2, Build JZO54K.N8013UEUCMA3). Ideally, I'd like to upgrade to 4.4.2 and root it.
I checked the "Software Update" link on the device (in Settings), and sure enough, it says that I have I have an update downloaded...I'm thinking that it's an update to 4.4.2 that was pushed out to this device some time ago, but I'm not sure...I'm worried that it's some sort of "Samsung-software-only" update or something similarly useless that I may like less than what I have. So I have several questions:
1) Has anyone else experienced this before who can say what this update most likely is? If it's not 4.4.2, what is it?
2) I want to root this device, but from the different forums I've been reading, it appears that it's easier to root 4.1.2; rooting 4.4.2 seems to have met with mixed success, and that makes me nervous. But if I root, I won't be able to do the software update (and I don't want to deal with the custom 4.4.2 roms out there unless I have to, as the process seems very involved).
Does anyone have some insight or advice? Am I wrong about the difficulty involved in rooting stock 4.4.2? Thanks in advance for all your input!
4.1.2 is the last release for N8013 .
Custom Roms have 4.4.2 .
Question is why do you want to root ?

Hello JJegan...thanks for responding to me!
I successfully rooted my phone (a Samsung Galaxy S4) some time ago, and I love it...rooting gives me more finely-grained control over my device, particularly since a lot of apps ask for (in my opinion) rather intrusive permissions (e.g., why should a word-processing app want to know my location?). I have an app on my phone that monitors permissions requested and gives me the option to allow or deny access; I feel better having that and I just wanted to add that to my tablet.
If you're saying that 4.1.2 is the last release (that's what my tablet came with), then what is this software update the tablet is referring to? Also: I have noticed a few custom ROMs available for the 8013, but a lot of them are quite involved and require some unsettling jerry-rigging (e.g., after installation you must disable the phone portion of the ROM because it is added in by default, then you must install a Wi-Fi fix afterward that some users have reported does not always work, etc.)...so I'm worried about that option. But even if I find a custom 4.4.2 ROM that works great, would I be able to root after installing it?
Thanks!
But even if I find a custom 4.4.2 ROM that works great, would I be able to root after installing it?
YES via SuperSu

I have SuperSU on my rooted phone: correct me if I'm wrong, but SuperSU only allows you to manage superuser access for your apps, right? I don't think that app itself can give you root. I'm thinking I'll have to use the second of two methods mentioned in this post, but there have been conflicting reports of whether this works on an N8013 running 4.4.2.
Oh, and for anyone else who might be researching this thread with similar questions in the future: I managed to reach someone in Samsung customer support (wow!): If you have the stock Android 4.1.2 on your Galaxy Note 10.1 GT-N8013, the software update that the machine may say is available to you is an update to 4.2.2 and that is "the most recent update" (read: last one) provided for this model. You'll have to find a custom ROM to get it to 4.4.2...very disappointed in that!
Long time since i actually rooted . As i understand the supersu zip flashed through TWRP recovery will root your phone .
https://download.chainfire.eu/1003/SuperSU/SR1-SuperSU-v2.78-SR1-20160915123031.zip
4.1.2 is the last listed release from Samsung .for N8013 .
N8010 is up to 4.4.2 as stock rom .
