Hangouts does not support Short Codes - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was stunned to discover this morning that the DEFAULT messaging app cannot send SMS to Short Codes. I'd have to say I'm more than a little shocked that our texting app is missing core functionality.
I've already submitted a topic on Google's Product forum.

I just realized this myself and probably looked ridiculous standing in front of a short code and not being able to figure it out...

are you sure it's hangout's problem? what's your carrier?
I can send short code without problem.

Well i feel dumb... you just need to scroll past all the G+ bs and contacts to get to the send sms option... it shouldnt be all the way at the bottom but whatever...

I have no problems sending to and receiving from short codes using Hangouts. Don't know why anyone else would have this problem. The first time I received one, it prompted to possibly incur charged from my Service Provider, but past that it acts just fine.

On T-Mobile I got that same popup, and it says that the messages have been sent, but I do not receive any response back from the short code. Like the local radio station here is 48258. Usually you get a auto response saying thank you for txting blah blah blah. With hangouts I do not get that response.

Yeah, see - I don't get that problem. I can properly respond and receive a response back and so on. I'm on AT&T - don't see why that would be carrier specific.

Not sure, i have been much to lazy to download a 3rd party sms app to test it to see if its actually hangouts or carrier having issues. Might give it a try tonight and report back.

I always stored those few short codes like #225# or #932# in the Phonebook & dial from there. It's a Pop-up showing the info onscreen but not saved to as incoming SMS, unlike traditional non-smart phone like the old LG or Sony. Hangout is on the MMS path and that should explain the reasons for not being able to use it.

I just did a test from couple different SMS apps and none of them get a reply from 5 digit numbers. Also my google voice number is not getting a response, so I have no idea if it is working or not.

[Q] [NS4G] Getting weird texts from Sprint via 9016

I have received two very unusual texts that don't seem to make much sense to me.

Not entirely sure what this one is referring to. I don't use Sprint Voice mail because I use Google Voice. So my voice mail messages should be on that instead. I've never even bothered to set up the Sprint voice mail as I never have any intention of using it.

Not entirely sure what this one means. Googling it showed that it meant a text was successfully sent and for some reason my phone didn't filter out the message. I didn't send a text when I received this one though.
Both of these were sent from the phone number 9016. Looking it up this seems to be a Sprint number of some sort. I asked some other Sprint Android users if they got anything similar, and they had not. So is anyone else with a Nexus S 4G getting weird texts like this?
Sounds like sprint spam. That's weird that your phone is displaying code. I'd just ignore it.
I just received this today also. Messages exactly same as the OP and on the same phone and carrier ...
Not sure what it is all about either .. any detailed answers?
the message is how sprint handles visual voice mail. did you happen to have a phone before that had visual voice mail and never reset your voice mail settings when you got your nexus?
Joeykrim, big fan.
Try going to messaging app and do the following: send a text to 9999 and as the message type: Block 9016. You will get a text confirming blockage of that #

Had an Evo for 29 days, but I'm brand new to Sprint beyond that. I never set up any voicemail beyond Google Voice though.
Haven't had another instance of these texts yet though, so I'm just assuming a glitch on Sprint's side.

multiple 9016 text messages.
I think i have found a fix for this annoying problem.
Ive found that it happens when u install some other text message app to handle your text messages instead of the stock messaging system.
I believe the 9016 messages are suppose to be hidden or silent messages and not actually get displayed, but when you set another program to handle all the messages, it doesnt know its not suppose to display it.
*So the FIX that i found that works is to,
tell the new text message program to Not Disable other message notifications. Meaning, remove the check mark associated with that option.

[Q] NS4G not sending SMS?

Have any of you heard of this?
Yesterday my phone decides it's NOT going to send SMS through the stock messaging app. I don't get an error, it appears as though it sends, but my recipient never receives it.....most of the time. Sometimes they go thru, sometimes they don't. It seems to mostly NOT go thru.
If the SMS does NOT go through, I can never see it in Google Voice.
If I use the Google Voice SMS app on my phone, recipient receives 100% of their SMS, same with Web interface.
If I disable my Google Voice account via the web and sign out via my phone, my recipient receives 100% of their SMS using the stock app.
I have all the settings nailed. Google Voice is set to sync, background data enabled, etc.... It was, has been working flawlessly up until yesterday with nothing on the phone changing.
I have wiped, reflashed, tried different ROMs, etc....
Today I called Sprint, they re-provisioned things, then basically said since it's a third party app they can't help. I want to beat my head against a wall here.
Anyone have any idea of what the problem could be?
I can't offer any help but I can tell you I saw the exact same problem all day on the 16th and 17th. I've since switched the Google Voice app to use it's own notifications and turned off the text notifications. For the time being, I'm not even using the stock messaging app.
I remember Sprint having an SMS problem a few months ago one afternoon, but it wasn't specific to GV. Maybe something in their GV integration system is a little wacky right now. People said they got about half of the messages I was sending before I switched to the GV app full time.
Good to know I'm not the only one. Looks like a couple of other people have the same problem over in the Google help forums. I de-integrated my account for almost two days, I'm getting ready to re-integrate it now, we shall see what happens. The support for these phones is god awful. If this doesn't resolve it I'm driving to the nearest corporate store and returning it through their window.
LOL! I'm hoping it doesn't come to that, but if you do decide to "return" it, you may want to attach a brick or something. This phone feels way to light to do any damage without a little extra help.

Here's a little update. Not really a good one, but whatever...
All of the text messages I had tried to send though the stock messaging app must have made it to Sprint at least because they all just dumped en mass upon their intended recipients. I got a pile of very confused responses.
Maybe the issue has been resolved. I'll switch my settings back and experiment a little.

That didn't happen to me, but it does appear that my texts are going through. There's one person who says she never gets some, but I can see they're sycning to GV now, where they weren't before. Everyone else is getting my texts too. I have no idea what happened but I'm a little at ease knowing someone else had the problem. I hope it never happens again, I rely on SMS for my business.

[Q] SMS notifications on top, but message does not appear in conversation

Hey there, I hope you're doing great!
I'm creating this thread because I was wondering if the issue I am about to describe is a known bug or if it only happens with me.
The problem I am experiencing is sporadic, as I cannot determinate a specific cause for it; it sometimes happen right after reboot, and sometimes after long usage, after a call, simple idling, etc.
Of course the issue is that when I receive an SMS message from a contact, I see it pop-up at the top as a notification, but when I want to see it in the threaded conversation, it is simply not there. I can continue texting, and they continue receiving my messages properly, as do I... only by looking at the top status bar though, because other than that, the threaded conversation remains the same during the whole exchange.
My phone is not rooted, it is a brand new LG-P999 from Videotron (They call it the LG Optimus 2X here!) and it runs Froyo 2.2.2!
Thank you very much for your help, and of course, excuse me if this issue has already been looked into! Otherwise, have an awesome day!
Is it possible you are using a third-party text app? I ask because I mainly use Google Voice for my texts, but every now and then someone will text my phone number, which of course means it goes to the phone's message app. As you mentioned, you get the notification and can respond just fine. However, if I don't pay attention, and go to my Voice messages, their messages will not appear, and I have to switch to the built-in message app to see their conversations.

Thanks for your reply, but I am actually using the stock SMS app!
Hmph, started looking into the "Messages" app settings and found something called "Text messages on SIM card" and found all the messages I was "missing".
What causes this?! =O
*EDIT*
I looked on the Internet a bit but found nothing pertaining to the LG-P999/G2X. I, however, found information on the matter saying that this is usually caused by reaching the maximum capacity of SMS messages in your phone. I have about 120 messages all in all, which is certainly a very small number! I also have about 4.50GB of free space on my phone!
Thanks for the help!

Thanks a lot, it is definitely a relief to know that this is a known bug. Do you know how we can change the default storage of the voice mail, or I need to root?
Thanks!
I just wanted to add that I successfully found a permanent workaround to this problem by installing GoSMS Pro! No more "disappearing" text messages

Text Messaging Bugs

I can't send/receive text messages via the stock client or 3rd party (Handcent). I get no error, but the people I send it to never receive it nor do I get theirs...
Any ideas?
Anyone have this issue as well?
its a known bug, you have to go to the messaging app to see the texts, it wont notify you, a incoming software update, probably within a month, will fix it,

That is not the same problem that is described in the OP.
No i don't have the same problem. It sounds like you need to call AT&T Tech Support about that.

Ok, this is not a bug. This was a case of my ATT rep wrecking my new line addition. I was adding a line, so they converted it to a family plan while keeping my individual account active and somehow deleting messaging for my new line (OneXL). Frown.
Mods, you can delete if you are inclined to do so.
Thanks everyone!

[Q] Why doesn't anyone receive my text messages?

Hey everyone,
ever since I updated from Android Kitkat to the L preview and the final release of Lollipop, I've had an issue with text messaging. I use the google hangouts app to send my text messages, I've verified my number within the Hangouts app and I've also selected it as my default messaging app. So the problem is: whenever I send a text message, the app says it's been sent through sms and money from my prepaid is taken as well, so I know it was actually processed by my carrier. But for some inexplicable reason, no one I text actually receives the message. I've tried to use an alternative app like tetra and the new stock messaging app from google with the same result. I haven't got a clue what could cause this, but because it occured after the update, I'm guessing it could be on the software side.
So has anyone experienced this and knows how to fix this? All answers are appreciated.
(I've a Dutch carrier, Vodafone)
*edit: Calling works fine.
**edit: fix: Make sure the APN of the hangouts app is the same as your phone's, apparently this may differ which causes complications
***edit: it didn't fix it, reverting to 4.4.4 did

alright, will do, thanks!
I would like to add something new, it is very strange. I swapped my sim card with another person's sim card who also happens to own a nexus 5. When the sim cards were swapped, we were both able to send each other text messages from both phones and sim cards. But the moment I put my sim card back in my phone and sent a message, the other person didn't receive it. It seems like it isn't the phone's fault neither the sim card, but yet it is. I'm extremely confused.

Ah I fixed it! Apparently the APN from my phone's settings can differ from the APN of the hangouts app. By default it was onpda.stm.sk.ca instead of live.vodafone.com, I don't know why or how this is possible. Just glad it's fixed, thanks for the help anyway!
They may have blocked you
Alright I found out what the definitive problem is: Android 5.0
When I reverted to stock 4.4.4 I had NO issues whatsoever. But with the L preview and the official release I did have problems. I also tried to update from the stock 4.4.4 to 5.0 but I still couldn't text. Anway I hope it's just a carrier incompatibility thing that will soon be fixed.
If anyone knows how android 5.0 can impact and or can come up with a way to fix this manually, please let me know!
Additional update, I've contacted my Dutch carrier (Vodafone), and they informed me that they will look into it before the OTA update is released.

Nope it wasn't, it seemed lik a fix because I was able to send a message to 1 person but to no one else. So as I said, I'm back on Kitkat which is actually a permanent fix. I've contacted Vodafone about this issue and they said they will resolve it before the OTA comes out. But I can safely presume that you have the same issue? Let me know!
(My apn is exactly the same as here http://forum.portablegear.nl/mobiel-internet-instellingen-vodafone-apn-t7.html)
Thanks. Yes I'm having the same issue. Also tried those APN settings, but it didn't help.
Well I'm not sure weather it works.. Just give a try
In the settings->apps->Hangouts->uninstall updates
and then try sending some messages ...
if that does not then update the app from the playstore again and then try sending...
If still the problem persists then it is your SIM card problem try PORT or alternate SIM CARD .
Have you tried talking to your phone provider? Might be something on their end.
No it is Lollipop + Hangouts. There is a bug in the way it handles non-US texts. Watch the outgoing number and if it changes to +xx where xx is the country code then that is where your problem is. Google Lollipop country code and you should find some info.
It is also the same reason that I can't SMS short codes from Hangouts using Google Voice because it adds a +1. Hangouts on the PC or the GV app work just fine.
