Hi XDA members and developers
I was thinking that the "camera problem" of the moto g maybe it's caused by a too high compression. I mean that any photo have a size of 1 MB, but on the Galaxy s advance is around 3 Mb at photo. So, anyone can mod the stock camera to make it better, for better photos?
Has it improved on kitkat does anyone know?
Does it improve with a different camera app?

No theres been threads on this nothing has changed.
As for compression theres nothing we can do, its up to Motorola.

Why not simply replace the camera with another app?
CAMERA ICS
HD Camera
ZOOM Camera
The camera isn`t bad realy considering the camera and sensor but it will never be turned to a top camera though because of the hardware limitations.

hardware limitations? my 3M camera on optimus one was better than the 5M moto g camera... my gf has xperia go and her 5M camera is also way better. so i dont get it..
Mixture of hardware and software. I've read several reviews that say prost processing causes loss of detail. However this maybe due to the camera without it producing very noisy shots. In an ideal world I'd love to have an option whether or not we want to have our images processed by the software, that heavily.
Compared to the Moto X's response the camera, Moto Gs is nothing which is why I think Moto are reluctant to look into maybe toning it down a little.

You mean software limitations imposed by Motorola, likely to try to keep people from filling up an 8GB Moto G with minimally compressed pictures.
They dont want the Moto G to be to good, or Moto X and Nexus 5 sales will drop too much. Its up to the devs to mod the camera to make it beter.

Megapixel count has almost nothing to do with image quality. In fact, the average lens performs better on lower resolution sensors if their other features like size, light sensitivity etc. are the same. When it comes to image quality, the three major bottlenecks are the lens, the sensor quality and the imaging algorithm. My impression is that the Moto G has an average camera hardware with bad software.
BTW setting the aspect ratio from 16:10 to 4:3 improved the image quality on my device, I guess the software does not just crop the picture but it does some extra filtering too.
Ad i had wrote on che first post, i'm asking if someone can mod the camera app to make it better with less compression and maybe other modifications

This is exactly what is happening. Motorola either messed up or made the camera bad on purpose to try and save battery/space when taking pictures or to not make the Moto G as good as the Moto X.

The AOSP camera worked well for me, if you don't mind losing the HDR function and the one finger zoom you should try it. Check this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2602054

Lol what kinda silly conspiracies is that lol...
Especially the last one :/
Im very sure its neither.
Its Motorolas software processing the photo in order to reduce noise
As GsmArena indicated
"Unfortunately the overly agressive noise reduction results in eradicating a fair amount of fine detail and an oil painting effect is visible whenever you shoot grass, foliage or similar.

There is a method to make the noise reduction less aggressive?
The biggest issue with the camera from pixel-peeping is how strongly it post-processes, is there an app that overrides this (shoot RAW)? I know Google had confirmed plans to add RAW support in Android back in November or so, hadn't read anything more recent. It would also have been nice to be able to set resolution in the native app but you can't -- using Camera Zoom FX app atm instead of the default.

Nope there's no way to get past it, seems only Motorola can change this.
Changing bitRate of 720p to 20000000 and image quality to 99% in media_profiles.xml did the job. Obviously file sizes are now much bigger, but clearly can see the difference. :good:
Also forgot to mention audio bitRate can be improved from 128000 to 288000. If you not sure how to do this changes better leave it unchanged. You could brick your phone so probably the best is to do a backup of your android or at least of media_profiles.xml file.

Can you apply this mod to the camera apk?

Hello,
I have one Cubot One and the phone is amazing, but I think the camera is the worst thing in the phone.
The Cubot One have a Sony IMX111 rear camera that is the same in the Nexus 4 and other equipments. But the Nexus 4 images is much better than the Cubot!!! The Cubot images are very granulated... I think that it is a software problem (maybe autofocus problem no?!) so I ask if is possible to fix this problem? I try many camera apps, including a lenovo super camera app, but the result is the same: very granulated images... I think that the kernel would be changed. Is possible use nexus 4 as a guide?
Anyone with Cubot One have a green halo when use the flash?
Thanks
Hi There,
I was just checking out the phone tear-down for the Moto G and saw the front camera is pretty easily replacable. So I was wondering, could I replace the front camera sensor with another higher resolution sensor that fits the same connection slot. Has it ever been done to other phones?
Thanks again, Cheers

Hello!
It looks like the S6's camera can take better photos than Note 4/Edge, though as it's the same camera module, why Samsung is not releasing a Rom update to match the S6 camera quality?
Samsung is just trying to copy Apple that's all they don't intend to make things better for all level of users they try to create a smartphone class difference
Although they have the same Sony sensor, the s6 has an i.r sensor and more. It's more then software differences

maybe its my phone but my camera sucks. i mean i haven't looked at them on the pc but just taking normal indoor pics they seem very grainy and blurry even with ois
Then your Edge should go in service...the same problem I had a few weeks ago,and after samsung change the camera modul, everything is perfect....wish you good luck ...

I was trying to use the this barcode scanning application to scan a barcode and for some reason the main camera does not want to focus when anything is only several inches a way.
I thought it might be the app but when I tried it in the stock camera app I noticed that the camera cannot focused on anything close up.
Is anyone else not able to get focused macro shots?
Yes, it's impossible to focus on a object that is close. I don't think it's a problem but the (****ty) way this camera focus. I wonder if any fix regarding this and the slow focus can be done by ROM devs.
Nexus 6 Camera suffers blurry close ups too
https://www.reddit.com/r/nexus6/comments/31e0aw/for_those_unimpressed_with_the_nexus_6_camera/
As you can see in the above link this guy has the same exact problem with focusing on close object that my Moto Maxx has on both video and still shots.
He RMA'd his phone and the replacement works perfectly fine.
Isn't the camera on the Nexus 6 the same as on the Moto Maxx?
Can anyone else confirm if they have this problem with the Moto Maxx or not?
Thanks
SOLVED!
So I was able to solve this problem by opening up the phone and replacing the rear camera module itself.
I purchased a Droid Turbo XT1254 Camera Module on Ebay for $25.00 shipped.
Took me about 15 min to install using a Droid Turbo Teardown Youtube video as a guide.
Now I can take photos of barcodes, labels, that are clear and about 3 - 4 inches away.
Hope this helps anyone with the same problem.
I also solved this issue by replacing the camera as rbalfury suggested but I'm not happy with the performance of the camera. I blame it on the software side since it doesn't allow me to manually focus the damn thing and my lg g2 could take awesome macro shots and could see very fine details with it. This camera focuses automatically and before it finishes focusing you can see for an instant when it's adjusting that it becomes crystal clear but then blurs up the shot a bit which sucks. Need a camera software with manual focus but no luck yet.
