[Q] How necessary is it? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello there, I've been rooting since day one. So I know all about android and it's internals, and I have always rooted all of my devices and others (quite a handful). And it's always to install something AOSP such as cyanogenmod, AOSP is my thing, I've never had an AOSP device before, until now, I just purchased the N5, and it already has the latest android on it, so I'm wondering is rooting this device even worth it? It seems to already have the latest and greatest, and doesn't root remove the warranty? I've never had that before so I never had to worry about it, but since I just purchased this and it already has the newest AOSP, I'd like the warranty to stick, so is rooting even worth it on this phone?

It's not "necessary". However it is fun. You can return this phone to stock condition for RMA super easily as well.

Well yes root has always been fun to me, and it can be fully returned to 100% stock for warranty? And what are some things root can bring for this device? I mean I've only ever really used it for upgrading phones, but this phone seems to already have everything, what more can there be to add?

Everything CM, AOKP, PA, DU, Slim, and others have to offer. Like a brightness bar slider. Halo, Pie, Ribbons. A lot. lol
As far as returning to bone stock check the guides in the general forum.

The only thing I saw out of that as worth adding is Halo but I can't really get into that since it removes the hotkeys, if I could have halo AND stock hotkeys then I'd be interested

There's always custom kernels as well. lol For me there is know other way to go. If your happy with it as is though you have your answer.

What are you kidding me? Hard to believe you even saying that coming from someone who been rooting since day one. It does not have everything. What about lack of support for usb otg, lack of support for ntfs, exfat. i am sure we could go on for days about what else can be added with root....

And really stock doesn't support OTG? Thanks for telling me that that really matters to me, and ntfs/exfat? Can you explain those?

Lots of reasons to root but for me its beeeing able to create backups, flash a custom kernel (Franco) for solor and soundcontrol and UV, installing LMT launcher.
Does anyone know if qemu.hw.mainkeys=1 still disables the hardwarekeys?

Yeah, for a device without sdcard, usb otg is sorta a must. The solution is stickmount with root as usual. Scroll to the bottom of stickmount description and you will see the additional hints on getting ntfs and exfat support. NTFS file system are fairly popular for larger portable hard drives and exFAT are popular on 64GB+ sdxc. Need support for these file systems or else when you mount these drives, your n5 won't read it. Here's a condensed description to get the additional file system support after getting stickmount installed.

Was able to get this to work on my nexus 5 and nexus 10. This is of course just one of the few benefits of rooting.
Did I also forget to mention you need root to also enable wifi tethering block? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2512674&page=7
Personally, I really don't know why we should even have to spend time to root to do this. A lot of these should be default features. I am sure there is always some bs business reasons...

Rooted and have some questions

Let me start off by saying I am not in any way new to Android or rooting (I don't know why I felt like adding that, but I did).
Anyway, today I rooted and installed the Voodoo Lag Fix. Are there any NOTICEABLE changes? Everything seems to be just as slow or fast (however you want to describe it), and the colors seem to be the same (I read that it enhances colors).
Also, I want to keep my phone running quick, so I want as few apps installed as possible, but I also didn't root for nothing. SO: if I remove bloat that's safe to remove, will I have any problems taking the Gingerbread OTA when it comes out? I remember the DROID X used to check for all bloatware or else the update would fail. Also, are there any good root apps to check out? I know about most of them, but anything specifically recommended for the Charge? I've never overclocked because I read it can overheat the phone, but I guess if it IS a better experience, I should give it a go, right? What's the recommended overclock setting?
And finally, should I accept the GB OTA when it comes to us? Will the rooting method be the same, just with different files?
I know it's a lot but I'd really like some answers. Thanks in advance!
Lots of questions in one paragraph.
I would suggest taking a look at flashing with the Gummy or Humble Rom, they both have bloatware stripped.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116086
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1146103
I have used both, and they both work very well.
No idea when GB OTA will be released but I'm sure if you do it OTA you will get extra bloatware. It is safe to OC the charge to 1300mhz.

Because it seems like this phone is kind of different from the other Androids I've had (X, OG, and Incredible 2).
Also, like I said, I want the best for my phone to keep it up and running as fast as possible haha. Metaphorically, it's my baby.
Also, I'm about to install this theme on stock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1127382
Why are you installing a theme before you root it? I'm starting to doubt your 1337 r00ting skills.

To ROM/kernel devs.

I have a question but yet a request to ROM and kernel developers.
I came here from the HTC First community, which has a descent size user base but base no Dev support, literally none. And I was wondering if anyone could take a look and see what they can do. If you can't, that's fine, but its a great device with lots of prospects if someone could get a custom ROM up and running. At least give it a look guys.
Much thanks from the whole HTC First community.
It's that bad over there huh? It runs near stock Android, right? Just use Xposed framework and set it up how you like it. That's what I would do, even if there were 100 custom ROMs available.
Nobody is going to build for a device they don't own, unless they have an extremely good reason to do so. When one builds a ROM and/or kernel, they build it to their liking - impossible if you don't even own the device.

Yup, and considering only 5 people ever bought that phone... what are the chances of one of them being a developer? Apparently zero.

Our point still stands. Asking in the Nexus 5 section won't change anything since nobody will develop for a device they don't have/care about.
If the people there want 5.0 that badly, maybe one of them should step up and do it.

You made no mention of wanting 5.0 in the OP, you just said custom ROMs. I simply offered an alternative. Xposed is awesome, and you can use it to add a crap ton of features to the stock ROM.

That's what I used on my First. Xposed rocks! And no I just mentioned any custom ROM or kernel.
Yep, I think it's the single greatest Android mod ever conceived. Both of my Android phones have Lollipop available to them, yet both are staying on KitKat and Xposed is the primary reason why.

Is the Pixel 2 right for me? Opinions appreciated.

Hi all,
I am enamored by the Pixel 2 for the camera, general size and clean android experience. I am coming from a Moto X (2013) DE, which I have been using for almost three years with no complaints. I am on Verizon GFUDP, am unlocked, rooted and using Xposed framework. I use the phone for tethering quite often. I don't generally use custom ROMs,; once I am setup and got everything running nice, I stop playing around with the phone and just use it.
That said, I am ready to upgrade and still want an unlockable, rootable device, which has a really good camera and will allow me to tether at will. My thought is to purchase the Pixel 2 through Google. I see that there has been some bumpiness in the road to root success, and I am wondering if this device will eventually (if it's already not) become stable enough to do what I want without a lot of fooling with it, or fear of accidentally "bricking", or other issues down the road.
So in the big picture, do you feel that the Pixel 2 can be set up, forgotten about, and just used, as I describe above, or do you think that the device will need to be tweaked on a regular basis? If so, do you have any recommendations of devices which better fit the parameters listed above?
Thanks in advance!

It should be good in the long run. In my personal experience after using a lot of ROM's/kernels/mods since 2011 I would say the max your needs would come to is getting a custom kernel. With no disrespect to the developers who have worked on providing great roms throughout the years, google has really developed 8.0/8.1 into a completely viable solution that till now has not got me to even consider rooting the device to get some custom features on it.

As far as I'm aware you can achieve this with Magisk root and a Magisk module.
Buy Pixel 2, unlock bootloader before you set up the phone (get the factory reset out of the way), then just use it as-is indefinitely until you find you need something that only root can provide. If that's the case, then install Magisk, and keep on rolling.

My Pixel 2 is rooted from awhile back. I want to update/upgrade

I really just want recommendations for what should I be upgrading or switching to in terms of which recovery I should have installed and what is the latest version for my phone or whatever.
Can someone PLEASE tell me if what they think of any of the FEW custom roms available? I will take the first recommendation...lol. Maybe the best recommendation is to just use stock like I am because it's fine but I still want to do a refresh and get the latest and greatest updates since I am probably not receiving OTA updates
For a long time I had been REALLY hoping to install a custom ROM on this puppy but sadly, even though I love my Pixel 2 and having it rooted, noone seemed to care be making custom roms for her at the time. Development is/was slow it seems unless I am viewing it wrong. strange.
I find that really strange because I recall claims that google is ok with you rooting this phone and does not in fact break the warranty.
Anyways, yeah please any simple advice would be helpful to me as I am just a little out of the loop since I last updated my phone
I don't really understand the point or see the need for me to install a different kernel but can't someone please tell me what might be cool about doing so?
I just want my phone to have a try with a different ROM installed that might be sleeker or more efficient and customizable somehow, just to try it and see.
if you dont know why you need a different kernel then dont do it.
if you want a custom rom on your Pixel 2 for the COOL factor. dont do it.

I agree with the sentiment as far as the kernel is concerned, but disagree for custom roms. There are a lot of features on custom roms for other phones that are pretty cool, so his question makes sense. Personally, I used to flash custom roms on older devices, and I'd pick them based on what features I thought were "cool."
As for the OP, I've been running rooted stock on my Pixel 2 since day one, and I have no desire to try custom roms. There's nothing appealing to me, offered by custom roms, that I can't get on stock with Magisk Modules and other root apps, such as Substratum. As far as which recovery to use, just check out the TWRP thread, it'll have the most recent. If you want to update your stock rom, just download a factory image from Google and flash it. Just be sure to remove the -w from the .bat if you don't want it to wipe your device.
This is the first phone that I have not rooted since I got it. The process is very cumbersome and the phone seems to run really well stock. I used to like wise also be caught up with custom roms but now it's just nice having everything work although unfortunately root is much harder to get as well

It's just more cumbersome. I rooted my Pixel 1 and not having a dedicated recovery partition like the nexus did just made things a bigger pain in the ass than they needed to be. If I made changes, etc I had to always fastboot into TWRP then reflash. I think I just miss the way the nexus was. Right now I cannot use CDMA on the OnePlus, but if the merger happens with Sprint and T-Mobile and I can I'm going to consider it.

Same. I know lots of people say "just flash twrp after each monthly update" etc but the reality is why make something more complicated than it needs to/used to be. For the Pixel 2 it seems every TWRP update is a "I'm going to make a backup image of my phone and cross my fingers it works when I need it" feeling. I don't personally enjoy that so like you I'm sticking with stock on the P2 for now.

I have not tried to make a back up since the Pixel 1. I'm sure things have improved however before when I first had the Pixel 1 and tried to make a backup I had issues and never tried again. Also the updating process, I would just flash the new boot.img and system, when I tried it with the pixel 1 it kept erasing despite removing the w- flag.
The Pixel 2 works well enough plus it's my daily driver and the process has just become cumbersome esp with work and others things I am doing. Probably at some point I may look at it again, and I have CDMA, but if I want to really run with that stuff I'd probably just get a OnePlus which is oriented more towards modding.
Plus more and more apps are not working with root and while you can get around that with magisk it's a cat and mouse game constantly. I don't even know how to do it anymore but I remember last year you had to flash this, then that, etc, etc in a certain sequence, then if it didn't work you start all over etc etc.....It's just a hassle.

Question Plan to get a new Pixel 7 Pro

Hi all
I plan to get a Pixel 7 Pro pretty soon.
Decided to go for it as the added telephoto lens could be useful even if I don't take photos much. How has the camera been in your expereince?
I also plan to use custom ROM on it. Have any suggestions for those? I may want to use Google Pay with it. Graphine does seem nice for the privacy angle though
P7P has one of the best cameras on the market no doubt.
Stock firmware is missing nothing, for anything else there is aosp mods.
I dont know of any custom rom that will not let you use gpay.
I dont like the battery drain of the p7p but i dont know any phone where i like it tbh.

Yeah I always wondered why one would use a custom ROM on the best android phone in the world when it comes to software pixel exclusives.
I've stated this many times but using other devices I needed root and custom ROMs to keep the device going past the original manufacturer life cycle, in these days a new phone comes out every 9 months.
Pixel/Nexus/Samsung/Google keeps the devices software updated at least 3 years.
Security is priority for me should be for everyone..
Lastly, I want to root just to install a custom kernel but always running stock android on Pixels.
I haven't seen or heard any one say a custom ROM ran better in three years than stock pixel.
After Google drops support then custom ROMs are needed imo...

Stock is fine, those features I referred to are not in stock though. You can root and use AOSPmods or something to get features, but I feel a custom rom with the features you want integrated is always the better choice. There is a thread about custom roms you could take a look at.
Mint has a deal for the 7pro. $689, 12 month service with 6 months free. I saw somewhere when researching about a Japan version being received by some ppl. I am on T-Mobile and tested mint on my tablet. No difference or issues I could see. Just a bit concerned with the model they have. Looking around I didn't see anyone else this low. I can do the mint deal @ $58 a month, get a Pixel phone and come out cheaper cause T-Mobile is $70 a month. really a no brainier, and I have wanted a Pixel phone for last 2 phones but couldn't handle the price. So anyone have an issue w getting a foreign model and mint mobile?
