Droids outside US - Droid Ultra Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Will it works outside of US?
I mean GSM and UMTS(3G), not LTE. Can I use it on some random operator for GSM calls?

Yes, you can use it outside the US without restrictions. GSM\3G should work.

I got it with VZW card inside, but could not pass initial screen. Will I pass then when insert MTS sim-card ? xD

I bought it and use it in Malaysia (No Verizon here). When I first got the phone it will not pass the initial setup without a sim card. Got to trim my sim down to nano sim, pop it in and everything is alright. However I can't use LTE (due to different band) but tethering works by default without entitlement hack or root.

Tnx

Just to confirm, bought droid maxx from verizon, using on Telcel on Mexico, Getting H+, not getting LTE.

Moving to Italy next week, will update everyone when I get there an pop in local sim

Just to let everyone know, in Italy now, works like a champ!! H+ out of the box, no extra setup needed.
Sometimes defaults to EDGE, but under settings>mobile networks, just switch it to UMTS, and it'll switch to H+
Good download speeds, definitely comparable to some high pop LTE zones.
Sucks 3gb is the max data

Works with RUIM in CDMA mode in Ukraine. (EVDO).

Could I ask all of you that which version contract of Droid maxx you bring outside US? Most of Verizon phone was restricted with data plan monthly, right? Or you have to buy no contract version? I am not in US so I really confused with this. Thx

regardless of contract, the phone is the same.
Should work flawlessly outside the country. When I reboot the device, I just have to enter the 4 digit sim code, and boom, everything works.

Where do you guys bought your Droids where they ship it outside the U.S.? Verizon said that they don't ship it outside U.S., only place I found was ebay.
Also is it correct that tether is unlimited outside U.S. carriers, wifi/BT/usb, all working?
Thanks

Hi, I bought the droid maxx from Ebay. I'm using it in Malaysia, everything works, even tethering works without root or entitlement hack, so yes there is no limitation in using tethering. The phone is automatically unlocked when it is not used in the US, you do not need any unlock code. The only thing not working for me is LTE, due to different frequency.

Can I simunlock i9020A for international use?

I'm about to buy a Nexus S i9020A (AT&T) on eBay, but I need to know if there's an application here to simunlock it or a good site to buy a code (if you have a website, please tell me price). I've been reading and in one thread someone replied saying It's already unlocked and that Nexus device sold has always been sim unlocked (even those sold subsidized by the carriers)... so I don't know what to think about it. In another thread the user said he bought on in Craigslist and he said it was unlocked and rooted... which got my attention the "unlocked" part... so, there's a way to simunlocked or not?
Please help me.
I'm waiting for your response to buy it.
Best regards.
It will probably be unlocked but if it isn't, the Nexus is is one of the easiest phones to unlock. Look up a tutorial somewhere here on xda, or wait for a more senior member to give you his advice here.
Good luck

"Unlocked" wrt/Nexus S refers to bootloader unlocking. IIRC the Nexus S cannot be SIM-locked at all - the baseband doesn't support it.
It doesn't need to be Sim unlocked. They are all unlocked by default.

It's obvious it doesn't work with a T-Mobile SIM card.
The Nexus S GSM has 2 versions:
i9020A, working on HSDPA 850/1900/2100
i9020T, working on HSDPA 900/1700/2100
Both are GSM, but different bands. They're not "software locked" but simply unable to connect because it's a modem issue.
So if you have a T-Mobile SIM, you need a Nexus S whose model number is I9020T

Wrong again, in parts. Since we're not talking about the US only.
Not all operators around the world actually serve their users with 2G. Just up north, in the beautiful country called Canada, many operators only offer 3G, including mine. Thus, in the end, you end up with no service if 3G isn't supported.

You need a i9020a for Rogers, so that's good. Check for broken pins in the SIM slot. Happens too often with the Nexus S.

Using 3G data in Europe

So I'm looking into traveling to Portugal this summer and I'm wondering if I can grab a 3G data only card from Vodofone and pop it into my S3. I know the phone needs to be unlocked for this to work and I have seen a long involved tutorial on here on how to unlock the phone, but I've also heard Verizon will unlock a phone for you if you are a customer in good standing. Is this true? If I can get Verizon to unlock my phone should I theoretically be able to use this data sim card in Portugal?
Also, I know Vodafone lets you make calls to other Vodafone users for free, will I be able to do this if a get a sim card with some prepaid data on it only? Am I still considered to be on Vodafone's cellular network?
Thanks so much!
As a side: If anyone has an experience with Vodafone's 3G in and around the Lisbon area let me know how it is!! I'm mainly looks to tether my phone to a laptop and do some development work while I'm over there.

I'm pretty sure the thread they're referring to is the GSM travel thread. If using a JB TW rom, one just needs to edit the apn's like you mentioned.

I've also heard that the Verizon GSIII does not have the radio's for internation GSM 3G, is this correct?

I would say that's incorrect given the thread I posted which contains plenty of user experiences contradicting that statement. I'm eager to do this myself if I travel again this year.
The primary thing you just need to do is have an international sim and also use one of the mentioned apps that adjusts your APNs.

Thank you! When you say 'international sim' do you mean just a sim from another country or do I have to ask for some specific type of sim card? Meaning, if I got to a Vodafone kiosk and get a prepaid sim card would it work?

Yes, I mean a sim from another country.
From what I've read, that's pretty much what you do. You just pay for whichever plan you want then follow those steps in the link. I can't speak from experience so I'm useless there. Depending on the carrier and country, some folks seem to have gotten HSPA others have gotten 2G. I'd love to know what you're results were after your trip either here or in that thread.

[Q] US GSM Moto G won't work on AT&T

Hi guys,
Just got my Moto G from Amazon. Upgrading from a SG2 skyrocket. Went to AT&T store to get a micro SIM. Before leaving the store I made a test call, worked perfectly. When I got home I wanted to test the HSPA+ speeds. It won't connect to mobile network. Called AT&T and they said the IMEI is not recognized in their system as a phone, and as such, will not be assigned a data plan. I called Motorola and they said since I bought it from Amazon, only Amazon can help me.
So I requested a new unit from Amazon, but then I got thinking...is there a way to fix this without having to return it? I don't want to go back to my SG2 for a week while I wait.
As a secondary note, I had my SG2 look for the Moto G via bluetooth and it was recognized as "XT-######". I thought that was strange that it wasn't called Moto G or something similar.
Any help or ideas?
Thanks,
D.

You need to find out what AT&T's APN settings are (Or whatever carrier you're using) and double check if they match with the one you've chosen on your phone.

AT&T also has its own prepaid (GoPhone) where you can get unlimited voice/text for $50 no data (wifi only) and aren't required to purchase data. However, it's cheaper to go through an mvno like he said.
I'm on GoPhone myself but I'm debating if it's worth the potential customer service hassles to move to a cheaper MVNO like H20 or Airvoice.

are you sure? Because in my situation, the line already has a Data Block. I read somewhere that as long as you do the data block on the line before switching sims, they can't know it's a smartphone. I may just try it and see if they find out. I'll disable Mobile Data from the phone and make sure it always has WiFi.

[Q] Using the verizon variant internationally

Hi,
Just bought today the verizon variant of the galaxy s6, and I need help with a couple of questions:
I'm moving to Europe in the near future, would I still be able to use the phone?
From who do I get software updates? Will I get updates from verizon even if I'm abroad?
Would it be able to flash international firmware on this phone in the future? Are the models fundamentally different from each other or are they just handicapped by firmware?
Thanks in advance

Yes it works internationally, I'm using it on GSM right now and plan to use it in Egypt over the summer. You will get updates but I think verizon needs a verizon sim to check for updates but when one releases you can always check through a computer if you need to. As far as I know verizon one is the bay because it supports CDMA radios and GSM radios and comes pre unlocked while other versions like tmobile only support gsm. That's the only hardware difference, the rest is all software.
Also be careful with your phone! Nor sure where in Europe yuppie going but some classes visited Spain recently and lots of them we're pickpocketed and had something stopen.

Hi,
Didn't u have the same issue with texting?
I bought my s6 from verizon on a trip in the USA, but I live in UK and using 3 network. The only issue is the texting. I spent lot of time to figure out what is the real problem, and it seems like it is sort of prefix problem. If I receive message from someone with new number with +4407 (obviously all of them start) and I reply, message is not going to be sent and I always get a message: " Your text to speech message to 0114407..... has been rejected by recipient phone." I never use text speech btw, and it definitely prefix problem because if I send to 07... only they receive it. I changed all my contacts to 07... but still after that I couldn't reply to messages for a long time just only with the Handcent next sms app. But If I receive a new message from a new number I'll get with +447.. and I need to save it and change the number to 07.. otherwise it will never work. I found some people had the same issue in the past, but there was no final solutions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2106370

I am just wondering how is this gonna work abroad if I even can't use in the UK. I rooted and put clear rom, but still same.

Correct. You may have to set up apns for data though. But text and voice should work out the box.

How do I add a new APN? I found Settings -> Mobile networks -> Access Point Names but the "Add" button is greyed out
I am seeing it greyed out as well. I was planning on getting UK 3 sim cards for our trip next year.
