[Q] Restore SMS from N4???? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In the past I used Titanium Backup and/or SMS Backup and Restore to move my SMS message between Android phones. Neither method is working on N5 and hangouts. Has anybody been able to restore text messages from N4 to N5? Thanks for sharing.

Use go Sms go to the backup option. It does text but not MMS. It also gives you a choice to backup to the SD or the server. I use the server so I don't have to deal with transferring files between every phone.

My backup pro was able to restore SMS and MMS. I did not try using it to back up on one device and restore on another but it should work by copying the backup folder it uses over.

I used SMS backup and restore and it worked fine. The app sets itself as the default sms app for the restore and then you can set it back to hangouts and voila!

I also would like to know......

backup to you gmail, from the gmail export to pc.
what i do is use mybackup and create a backup of my sms and use myphoneexplorer to copy it from my sd card to my pc so i always have a backup of my phone
why do you want to back up your sms's anyways?
SMS backup - in market. Backs up to GMail.

Is there a way to keep my text messages when I install another ROM?

I'm sick and tired of loosing my conversations whenever I want to flash a new ROM. I've heard there are ways around that, but I do not know any of them.
Try "SMS Backup & Restore" in the market. It allows you to save all your texts to your SD card and then reload them. And if you have any more questions, please direct them to the Q & A Section - this section is meant for development purposes.
Peace
I use Titanium Backup to backup my both messages and Handcent. When I restore those 2 things everything is back where I can use it for blackmail
I just wish dialer would back up too.

For dialer use Call Logs Backup & Restore, made by the same person who made the aforementioned SMS Backup & Restore.
Here is the SMS Backup/Restore - http://www.appbrain.com/app/sms-backup-restore/com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore
Call Log Backup/Restore - http://www.appbrain.com/app/call-logs-backup-restore/com.riteshsahu.CallLogBackupRestore
I have not tried call log backup, but if it's anything like SMS, then it won't disappoint

not true. i used titanium only backup programs, it didnt save messages for me. i learned that the hard way and lost all my messages.
use message backup to gmail, it saves all messages to ur gmail account under text label

u should definately use titanium backup for this.
sms backup and restore is so slow if u have lots of messages as it restores 1 message at a time.
another vote for SMS Backup & Restore. I use this for my text, my apps are backed up with appbrain (and a few I keep handy with ASTRO backup), and everything else is synced in the land of google.
why not just NAND before flashing. It should save your conversations(sms)...then flash the old rom. It does like that for me.

...what? If you restore a Nandroid you lose all of your current settings/ROM.
SMS Backup+ is great as well.

I use SMS Backup to backup my txt messages to my gmail account. It seems development on this app has ended but a new developer has created an app called SMS Backup+ with the same funcationality as SMS Backup plus the ability to restore the backed up conversations to your phone (though I have not tried this). He is also working on adding the ability to back up your MMS as well.
A second option is to install the latest version of Handcent. One can now create a Handcent account (on their website for free) which allows users to back up their messages and all their Handcent settings.

How to restore SMS?

Hi I just updated the Aria from FR008 to CM7. I did a Titianium Backup the update. But not nandroid.
After successfully installed CM7 I restore every apps that I had and just realized that all SMS is missing. I tried to push the mmssms.db into the phone but it just won't show up.
There is a solution in my mind: Restore Aria back to FR008, restore all settings via Titanium backup, use a SMS Backup to save the SMS, Restore CM7 and restore SMS via SMS Backup. This would possibly work but it would take 1-2 hrs. Therefore I request if anyone had experience and any better solution?
Thanks in advance.
If you didn't specifically back up your texts and you didn't do a nandroid then they are gone. If you used a SMS backup program then its as simple as using that program to restore the texts. Titanium backs up the app/settings, but I don't think it backs up the actual texts.

It does, but it doesn't do a very good job of restoring them if the roms aren't 100% compatible. I ended up buying mybackup pro or whatever it's called ($6) to migrate my mms/sms from my hero cdma to my aria today. I'd suggest reflashing your FR008 rom, TI Restore, then use mybackup pro or similar.

The same thing happened to me; the thing is some of the HTC SMS dbs have some additional columns the 'stock' gingerbread does not have; Titanium did backup and restore your db file, but the MMSSMS app can't handle/interpret/parse it correctly and ultimately you end up no text messages being displayed.
I did a quick re-structure of the dbs using SQLitebrowser and I got all of my messages to displayed, but had some issues that i didn't care to investigate any further.
My advise is to follow s0be's advice, but this time make sure you create a nandroid back-up first

I suspected as much, but never cared to investigate further. $6 for the backup program was well worth it.
Thanks a lot. Seems I need to do all the FR restore just for the SMS. Sad HTC is not using a standard db system.

SMS Backup+ is free, and it saves all of your texts to your gmail account, so you can search and view all of your conversations from there.
edit: and MMS

I have used that app with no problems. Are you getting an error when you restore the file? I've noticed if I try to transfer the xml file through google drive, it doesn't work. When I email it to myself though and download it as an attachment it works. Also, if you're having issues restoring you have to set SMS back up and restore as your default msging app, but when you are finished restoring you have to change it to whatever msging app you're using. Hangouts won't see your SMS msgs if its not the default app as well.

SMS Backup+ does not restore my old text messages

I've been trying to restore my old text messages to my M8.
I tried before rooting and it didn't work.
I tried after rooting and it didn't work.
I tried after doing the MicroSD hack and it didn't work.
Anyone else having this problem??
please help, thanks!!
Try MyBackup in play store. Worked for me. Hope it helps.
Hmm sms backup has my backup sms saved to Gmail. MyBackup will restore my sms from there??
Thanks for the reply

Try changing it to the default messaging app before restoring. When I used my SMS backup app it told me it has to be default for it to restore the messages. After its done you can go back and change back to whatever messaging app you were using. You can find the option to change apps in settings then more towards the top where the WiFi and Bluetooth selections are.
I use Hangouts as my SMS client and restoring via TiBu does restore my texts.
Hancent has a backup built in but it saves them as xml files I believe.
Never determined how to backup GO SMS.
For me, I want to use TiBu to restore all my texts and have now gotten use to the interface.
YMMV

I should say im trying to recover my SMS but i dont have it on my old phone anymore. It is only saved on my gmail account. Thats how SMS Backup+ backs up the SMS.
thanks
SMS Backup and restore has been working flawlessly for me from the thunderbolt to
DNA to the M8. Great program and even can upload/backup to Dropbox or Google drive.
If you have your old phone prior to the M8..I'd extract those old texts you want on it..then use another program to back them up on the older phone..then get that new program on the M8 and extract the text backup

It has always worked for me as well. Going from GN, to S4, to G2, but for M8 it hasnt restored it.
I have tried a few times and it just says "8548 restored (8547 duplicate)" something like that.

I think you are using a different program than I do. Mine is SMS Backup and Restore by Ritesh Sahu....I think yours is SMS Backup+ by Jan Berkel?
So if you have your old phone still, I'd restore all the texts on it (I am assuming that would still work)...install the program I use...back it up and upload the backup file to dropbox or google drive.
Then on your M8, install the program I use and then bring down that backup file from Google Drive (or Dropbox) and get all of your old texts on the M8

Hope it works! And as previously stated...to restore messages in Kit Kat..
SMS Backup and Restore will prompt you telling you it needs to be the default messaging app. Allow that and then you can restore....then go back into your settings and change the default messaging app to whatever you use for texting...probably the stock messaging app I presume.
