Trouble hitting soft keys - Droid Ultra Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't know if this is my Maxx or if this is because I have an Otterbox Defender case on it but is anyone else having issues when hitting the soft keys? Often when I hit the Home button the Google Now icon comes up and sometimes the back button takes a couple of presses to register a press. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Yes, the latest update changed the Google Now launch behavior. It used to be that you had to long press the home button to get the google now arc to appear. Now it appears if you slide up on any of the capacitive keys, or press just above the printed part of the key, but below the display. It's a bit of a pain. I noticed if I press back or recent apps keys and the roll my finger up a bit, the google now arc appears.
I could see a case like that possibly affecting where you press the keys.

You aren't alone. I've noticed more than a few times that I had to hit the buttons repeatedly just to get them to work. Not every time, but enough to make me wonder if I was going crazy.

Agreed. The buttons are now a pain since the new update in my opinion.

Any good software to help with the D-Pad issues?

I bought and used GScroll for a while and liked it... but ran into a few too many issues with that program active. Often when I wanted to hit a button and my finger slightly slid over the button, it would do a left/right movement or up/down movement.
I read of another app from here that makes the call and end buttons act as left/right buttons. But that application appears to only be designed for game use. As in, when you're done playing the game, you close the app.
Is there anything similar to that yet that runs all the time? I think the perfect app would replace the phone buttons with the following:
A long press of the green or red button would do the normal phone duties.
A quick press of the green or red button imitates a left or right press.
Is there anything out there yet that does that?

When I press the menu button sometimes, keyboard comes up?

Sometimes, when I go to press the menu key on the phone my keyboard will pop up. When it does, the menu button's light turns off while the back key, search key and home key stay lit. It takes about 7seconds and then the menu button lights back up and I am able to hit the back key to take the keyboard off of the screen. This has happened on my home screen and in several other programs and even in settings menus. Any ideas on this? I'm not tech illiterate, but I can't find anything else on it. I am NOT holding the button down like a long press. I am aware of the fact that this is a normal function otherwise. But, this is acting strangely and very aggravating.
Edit: did a factory reset and deleted any apps having access to keyboard and the hold down menu for keyboard function is no longer there so that may have been a third party app. Hasn't done anything in a few minutes like it had been so maybe I lucked out. I also turned off haptic feedback on softkey presses to see if tmay help

Okay, I am on the second factory reset and no apps just a fresh nexus s 4g and still persists to do it. It brings up the keyboard every once in awhile hitting the menu button and disables the other soft keys still. Won't let me do anything for about 7ish seconds
I'm having the same problem. Did you ever find a solution?
Your keys are damaged it sounds like. I dropped my nexus s in the pool but caught it just as the bottom hit the water and afterwards the buttons wouldn't work or would all long press. Return it to the company or call your insurance.

[Q] Question about touch buttons.

I've remapped some of the touch buttons to control buttons in emulators (ex: In a NES emulator, Search is A, Back is B.
The buttons work, however, when I press them they "disable" the screen and vice-versa. I'm thinking this is by design so you don't accidentally press a button while using the screen.
What I'm wondering is, does anyone know of a way to disable this?
I'm also trying to do it for SCUMMVM since many games are hard to play without right click. Right clicking is done by holding down the search button and then tapping the screen. And the Triumph only seems to let you use either the screen or the touch buttons, not both at the same time.
The phone is rooted by the way.
Thanks for any info!

[Q] Button issues

I am having an issue with my OPO where it is acting like a button is being pressed even when the phone is not being touched. If I have an app open I have noticed my phone will keep going to the home screen and I can feel the haptic feedback like when a button is pressed. This happens even when the phone is not in my hand and I am browsing with either my finger or a stylus. if the phone is on the home screen, it acts like I did a long finger hold on the home screen and brings up the the settings where you can arrange your home screen or select a widget. Even if the phone is just setting on my desk not being touched, the screen will turn on and off like the button on the side is being pressed. Has anybody else experienced anything like this?

Hard press home button options

Anyone know if there's a way to make the home button only work with a hard press? I'm not referring to unlocking the phone or turning on the screen, I'm asking about when using the phone or an app and wanting to press the home key, I would like the ability to disable a simple tap and make it feel more like a button by utilizing the pressure sensor. Anyone know if this is possible?
Thanks in advance
Look in Settings, Screen, Navigation bar, Home button sensitivity.

Try this-
set/display/navigation bar/Home button sensitivity
Sensitivity can only do so much, I have it on minimum for purely comfort, because it's much more effortless to unlock your phone when the tap doesn't have to be so intense. And if I really am force-pressing on the button area at any force, I am trying to unlock the phone, so I don't really see a point in having to press it with a lot of effort.
But I've found out that the button is very largely hardware-based, since it works and vibrates even when changing themes, when things like system UI are not active, and normal nav buttons and status bar are gone. So I doubt that any sort of third-party development will be done for it without root access, since the hard press function seems to work as a real button press, and not a virtual press.
