Will we ever get "touchless google now controls" like the Moto X? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible since the N5 has a somewhat always listening feature to have the same feature as the Moto X always on feature?

KLP supports that. You activate Google now just by saying OK, Google. Even when screen is turned off.

No. The Nexus 5 supports using "Ok Google" to launch into Google Now only when the screen is turned on, and you are on a homescreen.

Sorry... I thought Snapdragon 800 supports these things as it haves all the cpus that Moto X has.

It does, but I imagine there is some sort of proprietary software that Moto uses that Google has chosen not to use, otherwise what would be the point of buying a MotoX instead of a Nexus 5?
Just my thoughts.

The Moto X actually uses a separate chip design specifically for that functionality. No other phone currently has that. Snapdragon 800's do have a SIMILAR built-in chip function which could potentially do the same thing, but no apps are currently able to take advantage of it. It would require system drivers to even make use of it, and then a rewrite of the Moto X Assist app to run.

From what I've read, the Moto X does thing a bit differently. It actually has an extra microphone and a microprocessor in order to take care of it, rather than use the Snapdragon 800's built in capability. So it looks like we're going to have to make it ourselves, or maybe it'll be released in Android 5.0

Any chance Samsung's new funcionalities on the S III can be ported?

I'm pretty tired of Samsung's awful design capabilities, and attention to detail (from my experience with Galaxy S and Galaxy S II), but I'm actually pretty suprised with the S III's user-experience-functionalities.
My point is, Samsung introduced some cool new features, but I've had enough of their Galaxy's cheap plastic and want to move on to an HTC One X.
What I was wondering was, would there be any way to get any (if not all) of these features on any Android device?
- Direct Call: If you pick up your phone near your ear while reading a message, it will automatically dial that number. (Seems easy to port/mimic)
- Buddy Photo Share: An intelligent way to tag your friends in photos you take, by selecting their faces. After you've tagged them, the device will recognize them in future photos.
- Pop up play: This is actually pretty cool. If you're watching a video, you can pop it out and keep on doing other stuff, while the video is playing in a separate, moveable window. Could be handy.
- Smart alert: If you were away from your phone and someone called you, once you pick the phone back up it will let you know someone called by vibrating to inform you.
- Social tag: Once you've tagged a friend in a photo of his (see "Buddy Photo Share" above), while you're browsing through pictures of him the device will automatically link his tag and show you their current status on social networks.
- S-Beam: Actually pretty simple NFC file-transfer, by touching two compatible devices' back, it will transfer any file automatically between the two.
- Smart Stay: One of my favorites. Using the front-facing camera, the device will automatically brighten/dim the screen depending on whether you're looking at it or not.
There are other features, but I just thought these were the ones you'd actually use on a day-to-day basis.
Anyway, is there anything out there that can replace the features I just mentioned? Or even better, do you think it would be possible to port these exact features from a Galaxy S III to any other Android phone?
TL;DR: How to obtain Galaxy S III's features (above, in bold) in other Android phones?
Thank you for your time!
I think developers can do this touchwiz is not hard as htc sense.
Before you jump to any conclusions, ask yourself this "Will my phone handle features that were made for a quad core phone?"

No...no it won't... Wait, unless... YES! YES IT WILL! The International HTC One X IS quad core!
Thanks for your help, Sherlock!
Some of those features sound pretty cool, hadn't heard of this stuff before. Hope other manufacturers clone them in their phones or Google adds them to Android officially.
check this: OpenDesign:
"Our goal is to have features coming from various manufacturers user interface overlays be seamlessly integrated into your phone. Why is it cool? All CyanogenMod 9 enabled devices can enjoy software features for which manufacturers would rather you buy a new and expensive phone. "

Pretty good info, although they are saying they will do most stuff for Cyanogen Mod, whereas I would prefer having those features in, say, HTC One X's stock OS, by means of an app, for instance.
Anyone else got some thoughts on this? Do these features seem easy to port onto another OS?

Exactly, I'm planning on getting one myself. The only thing making me hesitating is that the S III will have all those useful apps. Still, I don't believe that THAT'S worth sticking with Samsung's plasticky feel, among other things.
Help?

Moto X Google Play Edition

So, we all know that Google Play Editions of devices come with completely stock Android. However, with the new Moto X confirmed to have a similar version in the works, I was wondering what everyone's thoughts were about it. Since it's a Google and Motorola made device, would it just be a normal Moto X but free of carrier bloatware, or would it be a Nexus experience (sans all the voice control, camera, and notifications)??

Maybe bumping a dead thread that I found from google, but I think it'd be a nexus experience. e.g. stock 4.2 framework/camera and motorola valueadds removed.

I'm wondering if it would come with anything related to the always-listening capabilities. That's a very "Google" thing to do, and doesn't require anything that wouldn't be present in the hardware. Kind of like how the GPE for the S4 and One retain their IR blaster capabilities.
I think it would be stupid not to have the always listening, on screen notifications and the quick camera access features. The two dedicated processors would go to waste! Maybe it'll have an option to disable them, though, for people who need extreme battery life.

Yeah, and like Tatanko said, it's not as if the hardware would be taken out of the device. Even better battery life, maybe even approaching Maxx-like longevity (wishful thinking of a Canadian longing for Moto's extended battery life ) would be awesome.

Moto X style Google Now?

So from what I understand, the Nexus 5 does not quite have the same Always Listen Google Now like the Moto X has, because on the Nexus 5 it only works from your home screens.... Does anyone expect that custom ROMs will be able to enable a truly Always On Google Now like the Moto X has? I would love to be able to use the Google Now Voice searches without having to touch the phone at all while my phone is on the nightstand and the screen is off.

Thinking of getting honor 8

I'm a big phone junkie. Would like to try various phones. Used bb10 for a long time and since then I've tried many android phones before settling down on the new BlackBerry dtek50. Big fan of BlackBerry android features such as hub, productivity tab, swipe up short cuts etc.
Is it worth getting the honor 8 in my case? Not a big gamer - heavy business's user with phone, email, text and browsing. I'll probably miss the BlackBerry features a lot. But reviews for this phone is pretty good. Would u guys recommend this?

Go to best buy if you can and try one out. The UI is not the best the phone hardware is amazing though...

I would love to. But I'm in canada and no one carries this phone for a demo.
The emui 5 update is supposed to be a lot better than the current one. Not sure whether i can update the honor8 with that yet. The websites say its available only for UK users.
It will update on Honor 8 at some point

If you have High priority for your camera, then you can go for Honor 8. Else OP3T will be good.

Im not a big fan of big phones. 5.5" is too big for me. Max is 5.2-5.3"
Sent from my STH100-1 using Tapatalk
I am going from a Nexus 6p to this phone. After it updates with the latest FW its actually not a bad device. A lot of reviewers highlight problems that are now fixed such as the backlight and a few interface glitches. The audio is not as good as my 6p headphone wise but it is live withable. I am thinking if I root it and see if viper audio loads it may fix that issue. The fingerprint reader works faster then on my n6p however it does have to be more on the reader (my 6p would unlock if I had half my finger on the sensor) but also acts as a button and swipe commands.

This is purely speculation, but I'd guess they'll roll out EMUI 5/Nougat for everyone in a month or two. The US closed beta has already started and I really like the changes. There's one going on in India and China as well.
My biggest reservation when picking up the phone a little under two months ago was the software. Reviews made EMUI 4.1 sound like the worst thing ever. I wasn't a huge fan of the task switcher which scrolls horizontally and shows the recently run apps as unstacked screenshots with a tendency (for me at least) to overscroll when I just wanted to move one to the left or right, but it worked well enough. The notification shade is also split between a left tab with notifications and a right tab with settings. You can swipe left or right on the opened shade to go between the two and there's an option to pick which you want to access by which side of the top of the screen you swipe down from. But I have tiny, Trump-like hands, so I use the swipe down on the fingerprint sensor to access it usually. Accessing it that way will open it to the left tab with notifications if you have any currently, but defaults to the right quick toggle options for WiFi, NFC, flashlight/torch, etc if you do not. I don't think it was the best way to set that up, but I pretty quickly got used to it.
You also have to manually whitelist apps you want to have continue running when the screen is turned off and enable notifications to show up on the lock screen. The average person might have trouble with this, but I'd think most people reading this forum either figured it out for themselves or you can just post here and ask how to do it (there's already a couple threads on it).
If you do pick up an Honor 8 I'd recommend a case and screen protector as I find it rather slippery without one.
As was previously suggested I'd try the phone out in Best Buy and see if you like it. Now's a good time to buy one if you do as there's a bunch of sales going on. Overall, I really like the phone and the EMUI 5 update has made it even better.

emui5 does look promising
Agree with the UI not being the best but the software is amazing, the screen is sharp and the dual cameras are superb. EMUI's gestures are really useful too.

[APP IDEA] 2 smartphones, but the main phone shares its screen across both

I have an idea for an app, LG is already basically doing this with their dual screen phones. Essentially, they use an accessory screen / case combo, that connects the main phone and shares its screen to the secondary screen built within the case.
My idea would be an app that is installed on two android smartphones. One would be the main phone and the other would be used as the extended screen.
I have a oneplus 8 5G from t-mobile and the other is the Google pixel XL. I can run android 10 on both, and once my bootloader is unlocked on my oneplus 8 I can actually have them both either running paranoid android quartz android 10 or the same lineage OS build. I don't think both devices being on the same exact OS would matter but I think it would help.
So my main phone the oneplus 8 would extend its screen to the Google pixel XL. Basically turning it into a dual screen smartphone. The benefit would be that the pixel is another full powerful Android smartphone and not simply a display. I think it would lag less and be able to use the Google pixel ram as well as oneplus ram and everything.
Apps would be able to split screen, and I would most likely 3D print some kind of custom case they both could fit in.
I would like to discuss the possibilities of this idea, the benefits, the roadblocks and problems likely to encounter, etc.

Honestly, it's a ridiculous idea. Put your time and effort into something more useful than this novel idea. I can see differences in hardware and kernel between the two devices being a major issue.

I wouldn't call it a novel idea seeing major company's are passing dial screens now as well as foldable devices. But I see where your coming from, making it actually work on 2 devices that might not be compatible, especially with the amount of different android devices out there would be very difficult.

Yes, that is true, but they aren't using two different devices or different hardware in the two "halves", they are using hardware and kernel that were specifically made to work with each other. That is why I mentioned that differences between hardware and kernel between devices would be a major problem. It is a completely different scenario when you are talking about using two devices that are completely different from each other.
