What Zandeer said. On the nexus 5 the stock tethering built in is the best and honestly only one you should use.

I'd like to know the answer to question the OP posted, not what we should use. Included hotspot is based off your data plan...

Exactly, this app currently saves me about $30/month. Wondering if it works and what is needed for it to work

I need this answer too. Its true I don't want the built in app because then network provider knows I am using tethering. I am on Straight Talk and I use Wifi Tether occasionally when I am outside probably once every few months or so. Appreciate if someone can reply to this.

they cant do anything about it.. although if you do hit 5GB bandwidth, they'll throttle your 3G for that remaining month.
thats about it and you can monitor it via t-mobile.com -- you should be fine as long as you arent using it to download huge files

Hotspot troubles

The hotspot has been working great, up until the past week or so.
Lately it will stop responding, and I will have to simply turn on/off mobile data on the phone and it works good again, for a while.
I'm running bamf 1.7.
Should I try a different radio? Do others have this issue?

Using the one built into the OS.
Anyone else with this issue? Does everyone else's hotspot work great?
Mine has always done that, even with good stable signals.

100% stock without the OTA update. I reverted from the update cause of the rebooting. Hotspot sucked with the OTA as well.

Honestly, not even sure what you are asking. Why do you want to appear connected to a Wi-Fi connection if you are on anything but Wi-Fi? Am I understanding this correctly? Either you are on: 3G, 4G, Wi-Fi, etc. when connecting to data/network. Can you please elaborate more on what it is that you are wanting/asking?
I was trying to use video chat on the road and it told me i had to have wifi. I have 4g and i conveniently had my gfs phone to use as a hotspot but i was just wondering if she wasn't there i would have to stop somewhere with free wifi

True, video chat apps most likely will require a Wi-Fi connection in order to perform.
So i figure that there would b someone who knows a way to manipulate it

You can always try one of the many apps from the Market: Skype, Tango, ooVoo, Qik, etc... see if one of these works for what you are trying to do.

Favorite Tethering Option

So what is everyone's favorite tethering method? Rooted/unrooted? I honestly haven't had the need to tether with this phone yet, but on my old device I was a fan of WiFi Tether and PdaNet depending upon what the situation called for.
I either use the built in mobile hot spot or foxfi. Of course modded the mobile hot spot so I can use it for free

Unlimited 4g workaround

Unlimited 4g. I'm sure you've all heard about it. I went and checked it out. Apparently the only catch is you can't hotspot. But since I'm rooted and running cm7 I should be able to still use hotspot with a third party app, right?
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
Tethering is built into cm7, no need for an app.. and you might need to change the user agent on the device you tether so you don't get the tmobile redirect.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app
I am on the unlimited 4g, if I use Firefox, default settings, it seems to work fine. IE blows in the first place, but for the sake of mentioning it, and doesn't work, routes everything to a page telling me to buy tethering. I can also torrent just fine. I guess part of it is just the port it's set to listen on, 80, and if there is activity on other ports, so what.
Edit: also, SSL sites work.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
I use the hotspot for my laptop and my lady's g2x. She is on the monthly 4g I'm not concerned with using my laptop, it's her g2x that worries me. I don't see how tmobile would catch on. But I wanted to run it by you guys before switching and potentially voiding my contract
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
so what your saying here is that if i switch to the New Unlimited Nationwide 4g data package i wont be able to tether my tablet to my phone?
That's what they told me but (I may be wrong) if you are using a custom rom or just rooted with a thrid party hotspot app tmobile want be able to detect or stop you, right?

So far it's not given me a problem at all.

Nevermind catching a tmobile redirect on my laptop. Working on getting around it
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
I use Google Chrome & change the user agent. Give that a go.
How do you do that without an add-on
I figured it out. I sometimes forget Google answers all.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
bit the bullet and switch to the unlimited 4g plan and i havent had any problems with surfing the web or streaming media on my tablet tethered to my phone. i have gtab 2 with cm10 and g2x with cm7.
