I have the same problem, I deleted the partition /persist and now does not turn on Wi-Fi, my folder has only one binary, do not know what the solution.
Edit: We need a binary and a folder in that partition, I guess flashing one. Zip partition be solved, just do not know how to do it, I need the files to assemble. I do not know if we can assist in that, since I have already used the RSD lite for flashing full firmware and nothing, you can not, brand error...
*Sorry for my bad english* :c

Hello, I'm having the same issue, but I don't know how to execute those steps(I copied WCNSS_qcom_wlan_nv.bin to /persist but I don't know where and how to put chmod and chown) . Could you help me with a detailed step by step? Thanks.

Any Terminal Emulator/SSH client (connect to local) will allow you to type chmod (modify file permissions)/chown (modify file ownership) commands - you need to be comfortable with using command line interface in Linux.
Alternatively, most file explorer apps (like ES File Explorer) will also allow you to change file permissions/ownership.
You will have to allow root access for the terminal emulator or file explorer.

I have the same problem. It's possible to have the solution step by step please?
I have Windows and the official ROM is in Motorola Razr HD (4.1.2).
Where to copy the file?

You have to put that file on persist folder and you are ready to go

Also went nuts with formatting and I formatted both Persist and Firmware, now wifi does not work. I have the pacman rom, can the experts please give detailed steps, sorry really a newb...
I do have Terminal Emulator and File Manager (both came with Pacman Rom)
1. Am I supposed to create a folder called persist and move the bin file in there?
- This did not work for me
Please Help, thanks!!!

Got it to work, here are some instructions that worked for me, used the bin file as opposed to zip and root explorer made things easier...

I forgot about this thread and somehow learned how to use it by trying xD Thanks anyway!
And also I suggest to use Root Browser and change permissions there.

Recovered my phone
I had this issue as well. I'm posting my results here in hopes that it helps someone somewhere who encounters the same issue.
I have a XT925 (Motorola Razr HD) with Clockwork mod recovery, unlocked bootloader and Slimkat 4.4.2 Build 3 Rom. I decided to update my bootloader to 4.4 compatible version, but in order to do that I first needed to downgrade to stock 4.1.2 I follow the stepshere for my device.
I somehow ****ed it up with an old version of RSD lite and after much work with command lines, flashing different recoveries, backups and shifting through kitkat versions I ended up with out wifi no matter what rom i was on. I flashed back to stock with RSD -no wifi, restored a backup -no wifi, upgraded rom version -no wifi. I cleared partitions, wiped numerous times.
To make a long story short, the solution in this thread worked. Simply put:
Ensure you have root access and a working ROM.
download a copy of the mentioned wlan bin file (mirror at the bottom)
get your hands on es explorer
connect your device via USB
place 'WCNSS_qcom_wlan_nv.bin' file somewhere where you can find it easily using ES explorer
enable root add on for es explorer, its in the settings list
move it to /persist, it's in the root.
hold on the file and select 'properties' or something to that effect.
change (or rather ensure) the permissions are READ & WRITE only for both owner and group (-rw -rw ---)
underneath permission you should see owner: set that to WIFI
exit and reboot
I know this is just reiterating what xXLuHXx, and many others have posted, but i wanted to ensure it was clear. You can do this via command line with adb I'm sure, but this is a fool proof way, and it worked for me.
Here are some links:
Es Explorer apk
Mirror for WCNSS_qcom_wlan_nv.bin (not sure if its the same link as the others have posted, but it's here)
Hope this helps someone

build.prop update.zip

Is it possible to make an update.zip file that replaces the build.prop file, or any way to replace the build.prop file without doing a full restore?
I did it using adb commands.
Well I tried using adb shell to swap the file, but when I ran su I got "[1] + Stopped (signal) su"
So I guess I'm going to be forced to do a nadroid restore of my system
Just use root explorer to copy the file to /sd, then use astro to edit it, and root explorer it back to the original spot and reboot. You don't need to change file permissions or any thing. No computer needed.

Hi Clienterror,
What if the system is not booting?
I had installed an application which changes resolution and now ended up with a boot loop.
I have searched for ways how to extract the build.prop and correct the error, but none appears to exist.
I was asking if it is possible to extract the current build.prop via the update.zip method so that the build.prop can be repaired...
I read that from the update.zip you can execute code, would it be possible to use a similar method for extracting files from the system folder?
Thanks

Hi korockinout13,
I have tried to refresh from a rom i got, but I am prompted an error with Nand version.
The android in question is not common (Subor, a chinese Android Tablet) and have not found any firmware for my particular model except for the one supplied by the supplier, which still does not install.
At this stage reflashing is not an option, so I am looking for something else...
Thanks for your time

Actually there is a potential option... can you get into recovery? And does your recovery have a file manager? If so go into mounts and mount /system. Then use the file manager in recovery and you should be able to access build.prop. copy it to your SD and then you should be able to mount your SD to your computer through recovery.
Edit: when you mount /system make sure you mount the SD as well or you won't be able to copy to it while you're in the recovery file manager.

You might have to flash stock KK4 at this point and go from there.
What kernel do you have for it not to have a file mount? I believe even stock kernel has it Since you can get in download mode, I would flash a newer kernel if I were you (with Odin) to be able to mount in recovery.

NEW Root method for Motorola Android Phones

Hi! I just created this thread to let you know that thanks to user dettofatto and me, there's a new root method for Motorola Android Phones (I don't know if it will work for other brands).
NOTE: I tried this method with Gingerbread, I don't know if this will work with other versions.
The method is far from easy, but it works if none of the existing exploits and tricks don't.
Ok, there are some simple-like steps to root your phones:
1. If you have an unrooted gingerbread, ask for a rooted gingerbread userdata partition image (aka CG37) with a modified local.prop file and USB debugging enabled.
The value that you need to modify is ro.sys.atvc_allow_all_adb from 0 to 1.
IMPORTANT: The best you can do is to double wipe the phone and then modify local.prop an allow USB debugging, so the data partition doesn't have any of your personal information.
Then you can create a userdata partition image by typing this in the shell (with root access)
Code:
dd if=/dev/block/userdata of=/sdcard/CG37.smg
or
Code:
busybox dd if=/dev/block/userdata of=/sdcard/CG37.smg
and let it do its work.
2. Once you got your CG37.smg in the SD card, you will have to boot into linux (so you can use sbf_flash).
3. When you are in linux, you need to extract the folder contained in the zip that you can download here mediafire.com/?n100jj66130lgra
4. Then you need to copy the CG37.smg and your original SBF (the non rooted one) to that folder.
5. Now you'll have to start a terminal with root permissions, and move to the folder by typing
Code:
cd <folder>
(where folder is the folder I just mentioned, without the <>, you can drag the folder to the terminal if you don't want to type its address)
4. Then you need to resize that partition to 200 Mb, since sbf_flash won't allow you to flash a big image (approx. 1,1 Gb). You have to type this
Code:
efsck -f CG37.smg
resize2fs CG37.smg 200M
5. Then you need to type
Code:
chmod +x sbf_flash
and then you need to start your phone into bootloader and connect it to the computer, then you type
Code:
./sbf_flash -r --userdata CG37.smg ORIGINAL.sbf
(where ORIGINAL corresponds to the name of your SBF)
and let it its work.
5. Once the phone started up, you now need to run this command
Code:
bash finishroot.sh
And let it finish the work.
6. Now you have your phone rooted. You can just reboot into recovery mode and do a double wipe, because the files that we needed are now in system partition.
Great!!
can't unzip attached!!
It seems xda forum doesn't allow me to add attached files or links. So look at the step 3, the link is there.
didn't upload the sbf_flash, the one i use it stuck in waiting for devices. can't enter bootloader mode, when press @ doesn't appear the menu option. any ideas?

Done! I uploaded the zip file again with the sbf_flash included, the one I used to flash my phone
Do you actually need the full userdata (I mean userdata as initialized after first boot following a wipe)? Or is having an essentially empty userdata with just the adb directive in local.prop all that's needed? Or does local.prop get ignored if you trigger some "first boot after wipe" tripwires? XT720 is eclair/yaffs2 so some details would be different but the concept is good. I'm just wondering about the "how could you get a rooted userdata" chicken/egg problem if no other rooting method already existed for the phone...
It's gone! Thank you!
I suggest you to reboot in standard recovery... and do it a double wipe..

I've just created a thread there, let's hope someone helps us
Do you think we could use the CG37 from other (similar) devices?
For example, as far as i know, the milestone 2 is very similar to the defy and the Pro looks similar too.
We just need it to boot, so we can push the needed files to system.
Have you uploaded your CG37 somewhere, so i can test in on my MS2?

Any word on if this will work on DX 621?
I posted on DXF to see if one of the people who took it will try.
Could it be possible to re-upload the required files? The mediafire link in the OP says it has been removed for violation... I was going to try this method for a DX 621, despite having the 604 root method, it would be nice to actually have the 621 kernel.

File removed for violation ... ??
I am working on this for the DX right now, there's an issue with making the .smg via dd, as the data partition on the DX is 8GBs. Most microSD cards are FAT32, which doesn't support an 8GB file (4GB max filesize). I got around this by piping dd through gzip and moving the file off for testing.
You can follow my progress on this over on rootzwiki; rootzwiki.com/topic/19318-important-information-regarding-621-system-update/page__st__320#entry635557

N8013 restore efs - no backup, not even nv_data.bin

Dear all,
it is time for me to pay back. I have found a lot of information and tips from this forum. However, when I bricked my device by erasing the efs folder (trying to install Linux on my N8013 Tablet) I only found partial fixes, like creating the directory FactoryApp and the file factorymode with ON inside it.
I have searched forums and forums and I could not find a comprehensive answer. I tinker and tinker with my device and at last I recovered the efs folder and it does not get wiped out on boot.
Before today, I had to boot my Tablet and create the FactoryApp and file factorymode with ON inside it to make my Tablet not showing the Factory Test have stopped and to show the lock screen. Now all is back to normal.
When in recovery mode CWM the efs would not mount!!
Thanks to too many people, I have been visiting so many sites I do not remember the names of all!!! Thank you all!!
Ok, this is the procedure it worked for me.
1.- Install CWM recovery in your rooted tablet.
2.- Install ADB in your pc to be able to communicate with the tablet via com window. Install busybox as well.
3.- google a nv_data.bin file if you find one. I found one. I could find the download link if someone ask for it.
4.- BOOT your Tablet in Recovery mode push both the power and the volume up button (the farthest to the power button). When the First letters appear, release the power button, not the volume up until entering in recovery mode.
5.- Go to your PC, connect the USB cable to your tablet and go to C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools>
6.- Type adb shell and hit return
7.- if you see # good, you have access to your tablet. Do not type su because does not work. You are root (I assume).
8.- type busybox df -h and check you do not have the efs mounted. In fact it does not even appear.
9.- Try to mount mmcblk0p3 (mount -w -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p3 /efs ) YES 0p3. I have found a lot of forums saying it is 0p1 but not in the Galaxy Note N8013. I tried with the 0p1 and did not work.
10.- Of course did not mount!!! That is the error. So we have to....
11.- Now try to make that partition, by typing mke2fs /dev/block/mmcblk0p3
12.- Now try to mount it again by typing mount -w -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p3 /efs It worked!!
13.- Now you have to keep the downloaded nv_data.bin file in the root of your sdcard, and a text file named factorymode with the letters ON inside.
14.- do busybox ls -ltr and you will see there is a folder called sdcard -> /data/media
15.- create a folder inside the /efs/ folder named FactoryApp
16.- Copy the factorymode from the root of your sdcard to the /efs/FactoryApp folder by typing: busybox cp /data/media/factorymode /efs/FactoryApp
17.- Copy the nv_data.bin from your sdcard to your efs folder by typing: busybox cp /data/media/nv_data.bin /efs
18.- Now change permissions to all those files inside efs with 0744 by typing: busybox chmod 0744 /efs/FactoryApp/factorymode
Do it with all!!
19.- Now change owner of the directory efs down with: busybox chown 1001.1001 /efs (I think there is a switch to change all at once, but I forgot so I changed all directories and folders inside efs.
11.- in CWM go to advanced and fix permissions.
12.- Boot in recovery mode.
13.- Try to mount efs partition and it works!!! Check with ADB that all your files are there and a lot more.
14.- Reboot the Tablet and the efs is there for good.
15.- Install in your computer EFS Pro and do a backup ofthe efs folder.
16.- I am sure the IMEI is not the good one, but the N8013 is not used as a phone anyway.
Please be careful and backup all the partitions of your tablet before doing this. It worked for my N8013 but I do not know if it will brick yours or if you have another model.

hey man,
thanks for your tut, my device is n8000 and it doesn't boot due to me installing tablet rom by mistake anyway, i did everything you did except i used .jar root explorer from here in the forums and transfered the files after i mounted it and choose 0p1 , im not sure what went wrong but anyway after that i used the commands to give permission and owner like you but they get wiped after restart, any ideas ?

Geez, I am far from an expert here. What folder/partition gets wiped out? efs? Because searching the web I realized the 0p1 is /system (maybe I am wrong) and 0p3 is /efs.
Did you try " mke2fs /dev/block/mmcblk0p3" or with 0p1? What happened?
Did you try "-w -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p3 /efs It worked!!" What happened?
I think, those are the most important steps, because it allows you to mount in recovery mode the /efs partition.
Later on, an important step is " cp /data/media/nv_data.bin /efs" but I do not know why?
Of course changing owership...
I am very sorry is not working for you. Please, try it again. I know what frustrating it is!!! I have had my tablet broken for more than two months and by trial and error finally got it working. I could send you the nv_data.bin file if you wanted. However, it will set your serial number to 000000 and I assume a wrong IMEI. But I do not use my tablet as a phone anyway.
I hope it helps!! Thanks for reading!!

Geez I forgot, if you are in a PC using ADB use the command window and do mkdir to create a directory.
However, let me take a look at my step by step procedure to put myself in context.
I have been disconnected due an emergency trip, but I will be back in couple of days. Sorry for the late reply!!!

Well, first, turn off the phone and charge it so you don't loose battery.
Second, never install another recovery on top of an existing one without knowing what you are doing - ask first.. (You get into the built-in recovery on that cm10.1 by tapping the volume down button at the end of the red moto logo when the lights come on).
Next, you could possibly fix your system with adb and switching some files.. but that would take a lot of explaining if you are not familiar with it.. plus, you might not get adb recognized during the bootloop.
So, you need to use the FXZ files for your phone/region... Or, just flash the system.img only.. See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41436876&postcount=1106 - and see the link linked there.
EDIT: If you can get adb recognized, you might be able to just run these few lines to fix things from the command prompt:
Code:
adb shell
su
mount -o rw,remount /system
rm /system/bin/hijack
sh /system/bin/finalize_release
exit

I am very confused at what you want to do. That link is only to root your device. But, if you are bootlooping, you need to replace your system.img.
You should download the entire SBF/FXZ zip file for your device/region/firmware. Then unzip it into a folder on your computer (best if it's close to C:\ with spaces in the path). Are you using a Windows OS on your computer?
Then, grab the restore-to-ics_win-batch.zip AND the restore-ics-system-only.bat.txt (remove the .txt extension) attached in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=36834775&postcount=108
Mix those files in with the big FXZ files that you just unzipped. Then run the .bat file to flash the system.img only. If that doesn't work, then open the other .bat file (use Notepadd++ or similar), check that everything that is being flashed is actually in your folder and has the same name... and flash the entire FXZ. If none of that helped, then you probably flashed the wrong files to your phone.
Just flashing the system.img only is probably the safest.. Because if it's wrong, you can just flash another one. The other files in the FXZ package can mess up your phone if they are not for your specific device.
EDIT: If you still did not flash anything else, you could try to use adb... Get that restore-to-ics_win-batch.zip that I linked above.. Unzip it to your desktop. Power on your phone so it bootloops and connect with USB. Open a command prompt on the restore-to-ics_win-batch folder by holding down shift and right-click. Then type adb devices - if it returns a number with the word "device" (not the word "offline"), then you can try to use those adb codes I posted in my previous post. Otherwisem you need to use fastboot and flash fxz or system only.

Unzip the sbf/fxz - all the files in a single folder, on your desktop or in the root of your C:\ drive (like C:\ InlineFlashing_Edison_XX-XX-XX_CFC_P3_APBP.xml - where that is the name of the folder)
Then put the .bat file and other files from my restore_to_ics zip and the restore_system_only .bat in that same folder.
Then, connect with USB while in AP fastboot mode, see if it says "OK to program", then double-click the restore-ics-system-only.bat

Sorry to intrude with my following off-topic statement, but that was a lot of detailing you did there altered. xD Great job and it'll serve well to assist others who need the same solution.
Now on-topic;
Yes it's okay to root with any of the ICS root methods available.
