Can internal SD card be switched out? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well this may be a stupid question (I tend to start a lot of threads like this lol) but is the memory of the nexus 5 just an SD card that's no removable inside the phone? And would it be possible to switch it out for another SD card by taking apart the phone and putting in another one? Im guessing if it would work someone else would've tried but thought I'd ask to make sure.

There's no internal sd card. The memory is soldered to the motherboard. Android just refers to that storage as the "internal sd card".

OK thanks I guess it was too much to hope for. 16 GB is enough for me but I was thinking it would be nice if we could get that extra storage for cheaper. But I guess if it were that easy then no one would buy the 32 gig lol

a2sd?

can we move dalvik cache to the sd?
Lol?

I can't figure out where to put my SD card.......I should figure that out before I think about a2sd....
Really though...apps to SD was a fairly large enhancement to Froyo...why would any Nexus come without an SD slot?

I'd assume my sarcasm wasnt as obvious as I thought.....
App2SD is needed when your "internal" partition of the memory runs full. As the size of the internal partition increased on Nexus S, App2SD is needed less than it was on older phones. If you want to, you still can move applications to the "sd-partition" of the internal memory.
Unfortunately it seems as if the memory inside the Nexus S is soldered to its board. No way to eject it except for the heat gun.
i know it doesn't have a physical sd card but it still has storage so i just figured there was a way to move dalvik to it.

Infuse Deletes Music

So, I've been running Serendipity 7 on my Infuse for maybe 3 days until I went back to stock firmware, but it seems everytime I try to put all my music onto my external SD, it deletes it all and saves 3-4 bands with scattered songs from the album. I had this same problem with my Captivate, but it would put the files into LOST.dir instead of just deleting them. I've looked around on Google since I started having problems back in June/July and couldn't find anything.
Right now, my Infuse is running stock Froyo and rooted. I haven't really done much else. The SD is a Sandisk 32gb.
To add a bit more, when all 19gb of music is on the SD card, I safely remove it and then plug it in just to make sure it's still on there. The music doesn't delete till it's plugged into the phone. I've tried using the SD card slot on my computer and USB through my phone and it always deletes either after I disconnect from the computer or when I plug the SD into my phone.

Do you have any .nomedia files on your phone? I don't think the media scanner is the issue here, but it's always a possibility. Did you try storing the music on your phone's internal memory instead of the SD card? Maybe the card is going bad?
I haven't put any .nomedia files on my phone. As for the SD card, it is brand new. I can put the media ob my internal, but when I move it to the external it deletes itself.

Now it's deleting apps that are installed on the external SD...

It's most likely a faulty external sim card.
I should stop buying from eBay. I've only gotten one good SD card from them. This I've was still in GE case too. It's like it will only allow 1-2 gigs of the 32 before it deletes the files.

Search e-bay for this problem. They are also selling cards that are fomatted to show more space then what they have.
I once bought an 32gig usb drive, it would look like everything that I copied was there, but would only play the first 4gig.
These mostly come from china. Like I said, do a search and you'll never buy memory off e-bay again.
Very good point, I completely forgot about that. Thank you so much.

Now there are a bunch of no extension files in my LOST.dir. They just now showed up. Damned Chinese products.

I make it a rule to never buy electronics off eBay. Local craigslist only for me. That being said, it definitely sounds like a borked SD card.

Yo, easy as pie to fix this. if your SD card is in deed broken. Wally World (walmart) is your solution, go buy a San Disk 32 GB like yours then switch out the cards and return the faulty one. Thank you.
I'm telling ...
But to show my age, back in the early 80’s, when we were hacking drives to copy 5 1/4 discs, we'd burn out drives in a few weeks. So we'd buy a new one and swap out the internal components.
Cranky...

Can we change internal sd

Or does it have one I want to put a new SD on phone instead of using external one

The internal SD cards are in a completely different physical format than micro SD cards we're all used to. The micro SDs are made for transportation/transerinf purposes. The internal SD cards are soldered onto the motherboard inside the phone. I'm sure it can be done, but there's a good possibilty that it could completely mess up your phone rendering it useless. So, I would say that it's not a good idea to do so. Especially yourself. I don't know of anyone trying to do that kind of modification.

Your phone holds an 8 GB internal SD card. A good place for info on your phone would be either the LG website or gsmarena.com.

App does not work since ICS release. Apps must run off internal. There are workarounds but more hassle than they are worth.
Not sure why someone would even need this feature in this day and age. It was only invented to deal with shortage of space before cell phones caught up with the times.

2 fried sdcards in 6 months?

Has anyone else experienced this? I'm currently running Synergy r118 and I woke up this morning to find my SanDisk Class 10 64 gb sdcard unmounted and not working. I just replaced my 32 gb card about one month ago from the same problem.

A week after I got the s3 my sd card did the same thing. It sucked big time, had all kinds of data that wasn't backed up(stupid me). Reformatting the card fixed the issue and it hasn't done it since (knock on wood lol).

Just for mine last Friday, put my 16gb one from my old phone in, died before I got off work. Trying another one. It seems quite a few people have this problem.

I can't even get my SD card to show up on my computer. I have no way to reformat it. In my case it seems the cards have completely died

Sending in my patriot card for replacement. 2nd one to die. I'm pretty sure it's the phone killing them. This does seem to be a problem abs Sammy needs to fix

Mine did the same thing the other day. Class 10 32 gb. Hadn't had a problem with a class 4 having shuffled it thru a few different phones over the last couple yrs.

FWIW everyone I have seen with those issues the card has been formatted in exfat or whatever format phone uses by default. Apparently it corrupts something. You might try putting card in a computer and using a application to format SD card as fat32 and see if it helps?
I believe mine was fat32 from when I was using it in my incredible. Can't say for sure though. I will format this once though. It's a [email protected] when it goes all of a sudden, especially when it's hour 2 of 8.

I always format mine on the PC to fat32. I actually had a notification saying that the card was damaged. Dunno,I'll see if it happens again...
I've heard of this problem quite a bit but when I used an SD card in my GS3 I never had the problem.
I was using a Samsung microSD card.
Had the same card for a while. No problem here. Thing is my phone happens to randomly eject and remount the card every so often when I set the phone down.

Whatever it is, I can't afford to keep buying 64 gb sdcards regularly. I've had 0 issues with this phone until now, and burning up sdcards frequently is a pretty big one. I put in a spare 16 gb card after formatting it in the pc for fat32 tonight. *fingers crossed*

The same thing happened to me, and a lot of other people in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1856564
I got a SanDisk card, and got one of the "breathable" cases to keep things cooler, and I haven't had a problem since. Not sure if that's a real solution, but I'm happy with it
Now that I'm thinking about it, I remember that when I got this last sdcard, I formatted it to fat32 based on what I was reading. Not only that, it's a Sandisk, which half of the above thread stated to get. Now I'm really concerned that it's a hardware issue and I'll end up with someone's piece of crap refurb
Mine borked on me again this morning. (32 gb Sandisk cl10 fat32 format)Said there wasn't a card inserted and then after I pulled the card and re-loaded it,it said the card was blank or the data was un-readable. All my pics on it were visible in the gallery and I added some more thru out the day. Sometime this afternoon for no reason it seemed to straighten itself out and is showing up in storage. Other than cleaning the contacts on the card wtf-over?
Haven't had a single issue with mine, haven't even touched it since it went in when I bought the phone in early August. It's my old 16GB out of my Bionic so its nothing special
