Collaboration - strong minds required - General Topics

(Dear admin - please feel free to move to more suitable cathegory if it doesn't fit here)
I'm quite discouraged with my current search for simple to do / daily planner / agenda app for android.
The selection is really vast but I cannot find anything for myself to be frank...
I would like to create suitable app for myself and like minded people with the help of experienced
developer and graphical designer. I have good project management skills and I'm also happy to pay if necessary.
I decided to write here instead of getacoder or other places, because this forum groups really great people
with relewant skills. No other place in the web offers anythimg similar.
Please drop me a line or reply to the topic if you would like to collaborate.

[Assistance] The Application Design Movement

This thread has been generated off of the idea by AbsoluteDesignz, found http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712525&page=9.
It has been brought to my attention, and to many others, that the average Android application, has a lack in design and the ability to present its self as an application of great use, because of it's looks.
The point of this thread is to list and assist those developers in need.
We will start by creating a list of current applications that are useful, but lack in the design area, we will then contact the developer asking if they would like assistance. If so, we assign a graphic designer to the application and they work with the developer to recreate the applications design until the developer is happy.
We will also reach out to new developers looking for assistance, if you are looking for a graphic designer, do not be afraid to ask!

Graphic Designers:
1. Wisefire - Private Message or [email protected]
2. AbsoluteDesignz - Private Message or [email protected]

--------------------------------
If you are a graphic designer and would like to join this movement, please PM me with you contact details.
I would also like users to start posting in this thread with useful applications that they feel need a "make-over."
Thanks to everyone willing to help, and a special thanks to AbsoluteDesignz for inspiring me to start this.
If this is truly a movement as opposed to a service offering might I suggest that you get together with the developers and come up with a standardized API for skinning or allowing user customization as well?
We are hoping to create a base of designers that several app devs can reach out to if they feel their apps are subpar in the design department. Get apps to shy away from the very basic black BG w/ grey buttons or iPhone style interfaces.
We want Android apps to reach their true potential and no longer be bombarded with all of these horrible looking apps or apps that do not match the stock Android experience (good icons that simply do not match, iPhone UI, etc)
Android does allow a lot of room for app varience, but there has to be some consistency when it comes to icon, UI, and UX design. even widget appearance.
I hate seeing screenshots where it looks like a bunch of first graders grabbed any kind of crayon and wrote all over a wall with no rhyme or reason.
Check out these apps to see good design:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.threebanana.notes
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.tvshowfavs
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.evernote
But those are just basic designs...you can get non-standard but still be visually appealing. Android lacks that in some of the most useful apps. that shouldn't be.

Choosing an engine for a game

So, probably asked hundreds of times before, I already searched for it and know some candidates, but since the oppinions I have found could be outdated, I'll ask again:
I want to jump to game development as a hobbie. I already have a job programming, and know C++ and Java very well (not a guru...yet! ). But when I search for game engines there are SO many to choose from.
I'd like to pick one which:
has a big community of users (for example, PlayN looks nice, but I think lacks of this. just try to google "PlayN push notifications" and nothing will appear)
is free (since it's just a hobby)
and would be nice (not mandatory) if it was possible to port to other non-Android devices (iOS, Windows8...). AndEngine looks great, but it is only for Android, and I don't know if Cocos2Dx is reliable.
extra points if the engine includes multiplayer capabilities or push notifications. I have not found information about this for PlayN, AndEngine or Cocos2Dx, so I guess they don't have these features and aim only for graphics. Moai looks promising here, but I don't want to learn to use it and then discover than the free edition is too limited.
So, I'd love to hear oppinions from game developers around here: please tell me your experiences.
BTW, I'd love to create a Civilization-like game, that's why I'm interested in push notifications and multiplayer. But I'll start with a card game, because I'm just not that mad (yet).
PS: After reading forum rules, I guess this question goes here, in Q&A, but feel free to move it to Android Game development subforum if you think it is misplaced.

Everyone knows the value of the Internet, its benefits, advantages and opening knowledge’s borders.
It's an amazing opportunity to get an answer to a question in any area that interests the user, and the knowledge can be both encyclopedic (theoretical) and practical, that real people provide, using their experience in this or that case.
“Tell Me” app specifically developed for Android, is a perfect example how the Internet can help a person to solve a particular problem situation, find an answer to which he can’t by himself. This app offers everyone who wants to see the interesting questions of various categories which are submitted by people from different geographical locations. This is not only useful, but also fun.

[APP][4.0.3+][1.0][machine learning] Gluru Smart File Manager alpha - feedback needed

Hi all,
We’re a small London based team with a mix of past experience directly at Android, Amazon & Apple and having built successful apps in the past such as utter! We’re creating a smart text based file manager called Gluru - built around the objective of trying to save time & trying to predict what you need (hopefully before you even know) - as a result we’re recruiting early testers and looking to get much needed feedback to improve the app. It’s really early days! The app is free for XDA testers - simply request an invite at: www.gluru.co
OR @ via the Google play link here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gluru.android.core&ah=uGBuHY10kqclbX5pnZdQIWsNjus
Ultimately as we develop this and role out future updates we believe this will supercharge workflow collaboration as a file explorer with a brain that learns from you either individually or as a team. It’s early days but we believe we’re on to something pretty exciting with the machine learning platform & algorithms that have been built and of course the early version of the app available at the link below - which we’re also quickly going to iterate because we know it’s not perfect. This is where you come in! As mentioned the app is free for XDA testers - simply request an invite at: www.gluru.co
Couple of example use cases to get the juices flowing (feature list further down):
- need a file for that call? receive a call and get the files you need immediately for that conversation
- need the slide deck for that meeting? get the files you need for that meeting in the moment.
- looking for that file and can’t remember where it is? search across & view all your connected sources in one simple place.
Gluru learns from you the more you use it. Simply swipe away the less relevant file suggestions and it will optimise itself.
We need your feedback to help tweak our event interaction. What use cases do you think we’ve missed?
You can give us feedback in 3 ways:
- via this forum
- via the specific XDA email address we’ve set-up: [email protected]
- or via the feedback form here: https://gluru.co/feedback/
We really want to understand what’s useful, what works, what doesn’t, suggestions for improvements, ideas for new features and just general feedback if the mood takes you Feedback is super valuable for us at this stage to help us build & iterate quickly.
A ‘highlights list’ of Gluru features is below for more info. We’ll endeavour to get back to all comments as quickly as we can!
Many thanks for all you help & valuable feedback!
Tim & Ben
Gluru - a simple file manager with a brain
Highlights:
- simple local file manager
- connect and manage external sources to consolidate storage in one place: Gdrive, Dropbox, Box, Onedrive, Evernote, Gmail, Gcal, Exchange
- create virtual hierarchy across all sources, simply add files from any source without physically moving them into a ‘virtual’ Gluru folder
- a simple view showing the most recent files sent by your contacts
- via the Gluru Footprint, get a quick understanding of the important stuff about each file - every file is summarised into its most important points, related files are surfaced, anyone who has touched it is surfaced, all links are extracted and any relevant news related to your file is highlighted
- switch smart notifications on or off so that files are sent to you in the moments you need them
- the more you use Gluru, the more it learns from you to enhance your recommendations
Please note - Gluru does not move your files unless you decide to - Gluru is just the connective link between them. They remain in the storage sources you’ve designated.
Gluru is currently in alpha invite stage - so we really value your feedback. As we can’t respond in detail here, please do leave any comments, feedback or bug reports via our feedback form here:
https://gluru.co/feedback/
Known bugs (that are being fixed!):
- Events - fix some swipe actions, fix dismiss/ delete animations
- Lag - occasional lag in some areas as the app is caching
- Visuals - improvements in some areas of design resolution
- Footprint news - related news accuracy not upto scratch - big(!) improvements coming soon
Coming soon:
- Auto-push - designate a cloud source and all email attachments which automatically pushed to a folder in that source
- Multiple user and device support for teams
- Notification learning acceleration
- Projects
- People Improvements
- Events Improvements
Platform & apps:
Gluru works by using its patent pending smart machine learning platform. The platform is accessible through the Gluru android app. There will soon be a website, an iOS app & an api for developers & enterprise to use the platform.
Language support:
Currently Gluru assistant is optimized for English. Other languages are coming soon.

Security & Privacy
The security of your data is of the utmost importance to us.
We don’t have access to the login details you provide to the Sources, instead we request a temporary token, which we use to access the data. This access can be managed and removed from your Source settings at any time instantly.
We want to be as transparent as possible, so if you’ve any concerns or suggestions, please do let us know.
That actually looks sophisticated. Any chance that you'll open the source code so we can be sure you won't do evil things?

Hi Rosa - thanks so much for posting. We're committed to being transparent and open. Security and privacy mean everything to us and as a result we've been careful to build this in a way that maintains that. We've talked about open sourcing this at somepoint in the future but we're not quite ready yet. Very happy to answer any questions that may come up and also keen for people to test the app and give us feedback. You can deauth the app at any time which deletes your account instantly. I hope this helps!
OK, thank you. I filed an invite request. :good:
Thank you all for the fantastic feedback so far via our direct email and feedback forms. Can I encourage direct postings on this thread so that any answers can benefit the community. Many thanks!

Open source app development

Hi guys.. first of all i'm new to android dev and this forum. so excuse me for any mistake.. The reason im posting here is i had an idea for an app i always felt need about and couldnt find on play store. I call it irevise.
Its a simple notes making app for students(yes there are many) but with a change. A homescreen widget with additional features to make it easy and convenient to revise/memorise the study material. am studying myself and so had started this project.. have got it into a decent app as of now for my use but there are many additional features to be added, and due to lack of time/expertise/funds i may never complete them all.. so came up with the idea of opensource. Ive released it under Apache license 2.0 on sourceforge. sourceforge.net/projects/irevise/
Invite you all to come and develop together to make this into a cool app
Am providing brief info below for anyone intrested..
Description
Well we all sweat trying to learn those nasty chemical formulae, or the weird biological names or maybe some antonyms and synonyms.Whatever it is anything which can make us learn our books better is just a boon. And when it happens automatically, its just amazing. This little appdoes exactly that. Now quickly make your own small notes for things you feel are difficult to learn.Save in the tiny I revise app,and add the widget. And it makes the notes available on your home screen so they cross your eyes every time you unlock your phone. And they get changed automatically so you get them all... Simple huh? Yes but very effective!! And with so many exciting features lined up it could end up as a really awesum tool.. So why waiting, lets code it !!
Features
Quick Revision Tool For students
Supports android 2.3+
Homescreen Widget (Auto Updating)
Backup/Restore Notes (to be added )
Share Notes (to be added)
Study Circle (to Be added)
Inviting everyone to work on the features mentioned and any extras which may be useful.. Also haven't been able to publish on play store as my old account was suspended by google(dunno why) and i dont have an additional card.. so apk also available there only...
its a nice oppurtunity especially for newbies like me to improve our sills, work as a team and get a useful app built in the process.. the biggies can always practice and show off their skills too
