Sounds sometimes play muted ( music alarms ringontes ) - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yep, as the title suggest my N5 sometimes makes no sound when there should be music playing!
It happens with every single music file, not specified to a special one.
It happes in the stock music app, it happens when i get a call, when the alarm clock rings...
Please try out if you got the same error by doing one of the following:
Press next in music app, wait. Do you hear a sound? Do and Repeat.
Set a mp3 as ringtone or alarm and then repeat and repeat click on it in the option menu. does it sometimes makes no sound?
Also confirmed it by calling myself with another phone.
1. call: n5 rang.
2. call: n5 got the call but no sound was playing.
yeah. this is kinda annoying ! Stock N5. (Also my Alarm Clock was 8 minute late once?? Maybe the mp3 was just muted 5times? Dont think so..)
Besides... as we are speaking of sound... does your Titanium ringtone and Argon alarm tone also sounds distored trough the speaker? (Also on low volume!!) Crystal clear on n4 but kinda annoying on n5..

Same here! Just yesterday, I was with a friend who was thinking about buying a 32gb N5, and asked me to demonstrate playing some music for her. I started Google play music, and tried to play one of my many saved albums. To my surprise, I couldn't hear anything. I checked all my sound settings, and nothing was muted. I ended up rebooting the device.
After reboot, everything worked as usual.
Weird!

This is apart from how it behaves for me.
When a song is muted, restarting the song, or forwarding to another part helps!
But hey, it's not cool if the alarm is silent or incoming calls make no sound 3 out of 10times or so.

This happened to me for the first time last night when using the Music app. Song played fine, but no sound. Restarting the song fixed it.

Same issue as well. KitKat has some bugs and that's one I encounter besides others.

Same here I thought it was just my MP3 files whicj were corrupted. A little worried about alarm tings though...that's something I don't want to find out
This sucks

I'll probably return my N5 and stay with my N4 for the time being.
Not because of this problem, but because of the distortion of the speaker (even default ringtones are distorted on low volume).
This is not the *****ing of others, its a real faulty speaker.

Since I purchased my N5 from the Google Play store, what's the return policy? 14 days, 30 days?

Hmm, it seems so strange, i have a melody set as ringtone and after a period of inactivity the phone vibrates without ringing!
I'll try setting a new ringtone from the default ones to see if it still happens.

Same here! Got 2 nights in a row where my alarm didn't set off so I almost overslept an important appointment...
Never had any problems with that the first week but today I also got a call where the N5 only vibrated but didn't make a sound at all. Still on stock but looking forward to CM11 to arrive at a reasonable state (including all my loved features).
I'm now trying to convert the mp3 files to ogg and put them directly under /system/media/audio/

It's not a Nexus 5 defect, I'm with a Galaxy Nexus with android 4.3 and it happens to me as well.

ogg helps!?
I *think* using ogg is more stable. When I hit the mp3 when choosing the ringtone multiple times (hammer on it) sometimes the sample will NOT start to play. Using an ogg, I ALWAYS got an immediate response, no mute at all.
I'll watch it the next days using ogg files (and cutted to about 1:30 min) now.

Just to let you guys know: since I use .ogg files for alarm and ringtone I never missed any! It seems ogg is much more reliable...
So I'm thinking about doing a new ringtone app that converts (and maybe allows to cut) mp3 to ogg and use them as ringtone/alarm/notification.

[BUG] Crackling sound on calls and music, can anyone help?

Hello,
I am a proud owner of a couple Android Phones since the HTC G1, the HTC Magic and so goes on.
Now I was very excited to get the Nexus S, but on the first day of use, after making all the updates to 2.3.2 and installing all my usual apps, I noticed a crackling sound when hearing music from the speakers.
I can not find the reason of this but would like to know if someone had a problem similar to mine, and if yes, if it was possible to solve it.
There are some facts about this crackling noise that I point as follow:
- The crackling sound is not present all the times. The phone works well when playing shorts sounds like ringtones and notifications. I can hear everything crystal clear;
- When I start to hear a song (tried many different players, all the same problem), or when I am playing a game that uses constant music or sound effects, the crackling sound starts after some minutes of perfect sound (usually between 01:00 and 01:30 of good playing);
- It seems like a irregular white noise, like playing a corrupted MP3 file, that gets in the middle of the media;
- It beguns with a low volume compared to the media and gets louder as time passes, until it gets more frequent and as louder as the music playing;
- At first I thought of a broken speaker, and checked the headphones, but the crackling sound appears when listening music on both headphones and external speakers;
- Then I noticed the crackling sound appears on long voice calls too.
Well... I thought it could be something related to the software, so tried the OEM recovery process (Settings > Privacy > Factory data reset), but it was not sucessfull.
[Q] Does anyone had a problem like mine?
[Q] Could someone point what could be the cause of it or a possible solutions?
Thanks in advance.
Jon
I noticed the same thing while listening to Pandora. Not sure what's going on. I'm on Modaco and don't know if its something in there or not.
I hear the noise after about 30 minutes of pandora.
I'm having the same issue running Modaco while listening to music via Spotify.
Just got back to the stock ROM, I'll see if it's any better and keep you guys posted.
I can now confirm that stock ROM is not affected by this issue.

[Q] Ringtone's not playing right

I don't guess anyone has had this problem but me. I'm running Eaglesblood 2.3.7. I've checked the settings for sound and the preferences in google voice and the cyanogenmod settings and can't figure this out.
When my phone rings it never rings with my selected ringtone. It rings with a ringtone I used to use months ago. And when I miss a call, the phone plays an mp3 of a song I have that I have probably only listened to once. And it plays that song to completion unless I mute the volume, and steals the audio focus so if I'm playing some other video when it happens, I can't hear the audio until the song finishes playing.
I tried clearing data on the dialer app, which causes the app to flash and then play the missed call song. I delete the two offending songs and the phone seems to be trying to play them because now I have no ringtone at all. All I can do is use talking caller id from the app market.
Anyone ever heard of this?

[Q] All sound through bluetooth

my old HTC Aria would send all sounds, even notifications, through my bluetooth speakerphone adapter for the car. So, I could be listening to music, and hear my email notification tone, then the music would play again. I was using CM7.1 on the Aria.
So far, the Skyrocket does not do this no matter which ROM I've used. I will be listening to music through car speakers, then hear the phone speaker play my email notification, then my car speakers play music again. It's a bit odd. I haven't used CM on it, because it doesn't appear to be a "daily driver"...
Any word on if the thing will do it, or how to make it happen?
I'm fairly sure all my ROM's have done this. My stereo is a JVC.
One ROM and I wish I knew which it was, would even give my GPS a separate volume indicator so I could make the GPS much louder than the music.
None of the ROM's I've tried since then do that. They all put everything into one single Bluetooth volume.
I am using stock unrooted UCLE2, I think its called, and it works for me through the Bluetooth stereo in my Camry.

Our note ank skyrocket both do this. It has something to do with system media but i have not had time to look into it. Back when I was playing I noticed that if you use an app like zedge or video caller id to set the notification it plays over bt or headphones...if you set through system menu it plays through phone only Or sometimes you get both...

Playing music and phone calls with headphones

I've got a really annoying problem; when listening to music on the headphones that came with the phone and a call comes in, the music appropriately stops to answer the call. But when the call ends, for any app other than the stock touchwiz music app, music will not start playing again until I unplug and replug in the headphones. It says music is playing, but no sounds comes through. The stock music app is mehh, I far prefer play music or power amp. Has anyone found a fix for this problem?

No, but it is annoying. You can also pause for maybe between one and two minutes then hit play again to make it start.
Also found that unplugging/plugging doesn't work if done too close to the end of the call.
Edit : fix ... see two posts down:
On beans 11 play music works. The only problem is occasionally when a song ends the next one won't start until I turn the screen on. But in terms of phone calls it fixes my problem

Okay, figured out the problem.
Go to settings, then motion, and at the bottom of the list uncheck (palm touch to mute)
Especially being in a case, it triggers the proximity sensor and mutes the music.
Haven't had a problem since I found aand unchecked this setting, so at least foe me that's what the issue was.

Phone stutters if notifications come through while playing music

Hi all,
So this is a stock Nexus 5 (root only) and I have noticed that if I am playing music with PowerAmp or streaming music with Xiia, if a notification comes through (email, viber etc.) the playback stutters for a few seconds and the notification sound is never fully played. On my previous phones the music volume would go low, the notification would play, and then the volume would go back up. With the N5 it just stutters.
Anyone else have this issue?
I think it just mutes for a split second if listening to music. It's not a stutter, I'm sure i read it got changed so if you had headphones in you didn't get deafened my a loud notification sound coming through
