[Q] Help with rom choosing - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Okay i am on a Carbonrom 4.3.1, i have not flashed any kernels because i know of none but would like to, and i want the best rom out there if its touch wiz or Aosp.... I like touch wiz messaging but other then that i like stock... give your most stable, best battery, performance, kernel and rom i should try out.. :cyclops::cyclops::cyclops:

Sigh... I see several of these threads every week. They All get closed. Look I gonna give you the short version. Go read the threads in the developer section and pick one at random. Give it a few days and if you don't like it then nandroid and flash another. No one can tell you which is the best because people have different usage patterns. General rule of thumb is touchwizz tends to have better battery life and better signal then AOSP. Other then that can't really tell you anything else. Just go to the different ROM threads and read the OP at least 2 times from top to bottom. Look at screen shots. Same goes for kernels. For the record I'm enjoying Axiom

I dont know if you meant to come off as a **** or not but i have, and ive had no luck finding a kernel or information on a new user for one, spent hours before i got the phone and last night.. I came from a S1 (fasciante) and there were plenty of options on those things.... So i thought some people would know from personal experience. sorry.

No not trying to be a ****. Giving constructive criticism. The kernels are in the Original Android development section. BMS And KT747 are real popular.

The problem is that we all have different experiences with each rom to be of help to anyone. The truth is there isn't a best rom out there as what works for one person can be crappy choice for someone else. Lastly by asking that question alone can cause a debate over which rom is the best.

Hello everybody!
So i'd like to check out what roms people use and why.
Me personally i'm practically stuck with stock RUXLF3 because of the GPS is only working with it. I'll look into that later.
I've switched out Browser and Email apps for AOSP ones because they're graphically more appealing and the GUIs are more effective.
But if it weren't for the GPS issue i would be on Embryo 6.
What roms do you run and what makes you choose the one you choose?
Mine is slimbean forever. I chose it because I was using orthus 5 and was having too many lockups and freezes. I stay on it for 1 (well 2, stability) reason only. I don't have to turn my data on and off to send or receive mms. Major turn on for me as its a pita to do that as I'm on lowest data plan I'm required to have (I would have no data plan if I could since I never use it).

How's that? Does it turn on & off data automatically for MMS? Sounds pretty effective, i have my data turned off most of the time too to save battery.

Ah that's ok because this isn't a best of thread, it's good for research purposes. You're not supposed to list all of your favourites, you're supposed to say what your daily driver is no matter if you like it or not and share with us the reason for it being your daily driver. So one rom per person that is.

gps shouldnt be an issue, sometimes it needs to relearn, just give it time when switching radios, flash it twice no cable plugged in, or are you talking about roms in general, so yup you should look into it
i guess we'll wait for the mod to decide if this is a "best rom" thread, now let me see, which rom should i pick?
It'll be interesting to see what the MODs decide.
To me it's a vote so the OP isn't asking anyone to tell him what to use. He's set this up in such a way that if people do vote it might be beneficial in the future. When people open "best" threads they could just be linked to this and the thread closed. Then those people can see what percentage of votes each ROM received. I'm by no means saying that whatever ROM that get's the most votes it the "best" for any individual but it's a good baseline for noobs.
I personally hope that mods don't close this; don't think of it as a best of thread, think of it as figuring out what the community happens to be running. I'm gonna need to pick a new ROM soon since the one I'm on is discontinued. It'd be nice to see what people have so far.
It would be perceived as a "best of" thread mostly due to the fact that it may cause people to compare and possibly become a debatable subject. But let the mods decide.

I agree in principle, but I just don't see this thread ending any other way than two morons fighting to the death over ROM A vs. ROM B.
I'm not planning on changing the ROM on my Rocket anytime soon; kinda like the one I've got. I've also settled into a daily driver on my Note II; been a very boring month or so in terms of flashing.

Where is cm 9.1.
Now that is a ROM.
As TJ said this may end up badly
There is no objective best ROM test
People have preferences based on their usage (a gamer, for example, would want a snappy rom as opposed to me who wants battery life -which again is a function of your usage)
I got my best rom which I'm loving and is snappy with great battery life. But I'm not telling

Honestly I don't know what setting allows it, I just know it does. Put slim on my sons cappy because he was having a problem receiving mms with his data off and now he can leave data off but still send and receive mms. Same with my rocket. I have asked several separate places about what setting it is that allows this and have never gotten an answer.:what:
This is horrible no wonder devs leave xda. Best threads are nothing but crap.

What CM instability are you experiencing? I've had problems with some of the nightlys but I always do a backup so it's easy to revert if needed.
Please read ddurandSGS3 comments, what works for me on my phone may very well not work on your phone. You'd think that a bunch of mass produced phones would be identical but they're not, they're all different and I've learned that with several different brands of phones. A ROM that's absolute perfection on my phone may not even boot on your phone, believe it or not!
Next, you have to consider all the different ways people use their phones.
I've been pretty pleased with Clean ROM but currently I'm back to CM.

I have been using andybones bonesstockrom v1.5 and can say I like it. I am not a big fan of multi windows so I don't use it. I think moar is a good rom as well. Just read the op threads like others have said and and try one. I think I have tried most of them and they are all good.

Thread closed as "Best" rom for one user is not necessarily the "Best" for another.
Users are encouraged to read and determine what is best for them by reading the knowledge shared via posting.
These threads always spiral into arguments about one rom over another, and thus, trolling ensues.

Looking for good battery life rom suggestions

So I had CM 10.1 for a good while and decided to try something new song trues Jellybam. Everything works smoothly but my only complaint is my battery life has gone done significantly. So I'm looking for a pretty highly customizable rom that's stable, smooth, and has pretty good battery life. Any suggestions?
I don't really have the time or patience to try out a bunch of roms at the moment so I need some ideas... Thanks
By posting this you will end up doing exactly what you claim to have no time or patience for. The universal fact is that what rom works for one person doesn't always work for everyone else. Also these threads get closed as these can lead to unwanted debates. In the end you are better off trying out the roms yourself to see if it works well with your device but you don't have time for that so good luck in your search.
I'm not looking to go out and try 200 roms and then find out the one I want is the one I didn't try.. I'm just looking for ideas to narrow down my options
Well your op didn't help much as pretty much all of Touchwiz roms are stable so are most AOSP roms. You want customization there are the following:
Bonestock
AOSPA
Chameleon
MOAR
Plasma
AOKP
Pac-Man
Avatar
Goodness
Carbon
Mysterious
Xenon
Vanilla Rootbox
Jellybeer
MIUI
Axis
Hyperdrive
Synergy
Obsessed
Liquidsmooth
See I pretty much mentioned most if not all the roms with high customization options and results may vary in terms of battery life.
Thank you, and sorry I'm fairly new to rooting. Do you have any opinions as to which ones I should try first?

Well you can try Chameleon since it is pretty good rom. When it comes to this section it helps to be specific in your threads as it helps when solving problems also avoid posting suggestion thread as like I said the moderator will close them down.
I got the best life out of Bone Stock or literally the factory 4.1.2. I got the worst battery life out of AOSP ROMs.
I'd say try bone stock, and if that doesnt work try the factory odexed rom - it was the only rom I could get power saving mode to work on.

Also if you are willing and have the money, get a note 2. I switched and I get noticeably better better life.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app
if youre unwilling to put in the work, why should anyone help you?
every device runs different and you need to read and try what works for you.
if you dont have the patience for reading and trying then maybe roms arent for you.
not trying to be a jerk but he answered your question when most would avoid this type of thread.
I've looked around at quite a few roms. it's just since there is so many I don't know where to start. I'd like to try a few roms that quite a few people recommend and work down from there. It just seems easier than trying rom after rom after rom for a week or two when I could ask here, get a narrowed down list so I could only spend a few days, find what I liked the most and move on.
Ok thanks for the help.. sorry I wasn't to specific in the op :/ I'll start with chameleon and work my way around the list.

[Q] Best Stock Android ROM?

Hey guys, apologies if I'm not posting in the best possible section for this, but I've been wondering for a while.
I've been getting sick of TouchWiz. Not just the launcher (I got Nova the moment I could, and am still using it) but the customizations of the phone itself and the small annoyances that Verizon baked in, such as the always-on WiFi indicator. I've been debating going to a stock ROM for a long while, and I've made my decision to break free of the ridiculousness that is Verizon and Samsung's customizations, as they've made the phone slow, and I know it can run much better than it is right now. So here's my question:
What's the best stock Android ROM currently? I'd preferably want one that is
Being currently developed. I don't want a ROM with a lazy developer. (If ROMs are a few weeks late, I won't mind, but I don't want to be waiting forever to get the next .1 added to my version number.
Quick and minimal. Literally as close to stock Android as it can be. If there are things that need to be kept, such as the camera app, that's fine, but I'd like to rid myself of as much TouchWiz as I can.
Free of bugs. I know most ROMs aren't perfect. I'm fine with that. I need something to work as a stable daily driver, and I don't much care to hop on the next nightly I can find.
On the latest version of Android without bugs.
I have experience with rooting and flashing with Odin, but I haven't done it in a while, so if the method to root+flash is more than a one click or a couple of console commands, I'd like to be guided if possible. I have no want to brick my phone, as you can well imagine.
Also, if there's a list of stock ROMs for the Verizon GS3, I'd like to be pointed in that direction, if possible.
Thanks! I hope to hear from someone soon!
Not being rude but, if you were to take the amount of time you put into making this thread and actually looked throughout the forums you'd find a thread already on this or get this, you could go to the development threads and read the ops. Mind blowing right?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
Yeah, I know that. I could surf through bunches of ROMs, but I posted here as a question for community feedback on a bunch of them, that might help me make a decision.
Is asking for opinions and information less efficient than going through a list that's new territory for me?
I'm not stupid. I want advice and info from experienced users. Is that so hard to ask for?
Great thread idea. Surprised no one else has done this.

You described most of the roms that this phone has. Most give you an option to keep phone stock, Based on each thread, they're all amazing to use daily. As far as being on the latest version you simply have to look at the thread title.
You'll definitely need to go through several threads and try them out to see what suits your needs best. It's not an easy task when there are several awesome developers on your phone!

Thanks! Didn't know I was delving into such a huge bunch of ROMs. Back in the X and Droid 2 days, I had to surf through a bunch of different ROMs that really weren't reliable. I know things have changed, but this seems pretty extreme.
If you know of any, which ones have you heard are the, well, "god-tier" ROMs? Any developers who are notable that I should check first?
Thanks again!
I wouldn't judge god tier roms, I'm happy to say that all of these roms on this device forum are just as reliable, it's only a matter of how your phone plays with the rom you end up choosing, since all devices play differently. Even if these threads are meant to be locked since they bring nothing but just opinions.

I will say that there isn't a rom that is the best. It is all about your preference. I have had bad experiences with Synergy,Axis and CleanRom doesn't mean that these are sh***y roms.

Well, I was just looking for information on the best Roms for the GS3, but since all of the Roms are apparently great, could you list a couple? Even if they aren't "god-tier", are there at least some that fit the qualifications and are well known? I know there's not going to be a "These are the best ROMs ever" list, but are there a few that are highly maintained, or some developers that are well known besides CyanogenMod?
Sorry if I seem new to this whole thing.
Barebones stock is pretty much all I've been for almost a month, and at this point I'm not ashamed to admit I'm a flashaholic, but i only flash his updates (andybones) and the great news is that he keeps the rom consistent in updates and solid Smoot performance.
Also hypredrive just got updated to rls 15 and that's another amazing rom that gets a monthly update and its worth the wait and a very determined developer.

You should give every rom a go, but you can start testing with Synergy. Try it for a week, and then test another rom
Sorry, "Best" is a term that is subjective and can only be defined by the individual, the post above/before me is a good idea.
XDA is not a support site, users are expected to use and test on their own.

[Q] Best 4.4 ROM?

I am currently on SlimROM 2.2 and I've been on Slim since beta 2. I absolutely love SlimROM but I really want to try 4.4. Should I wait till next week when SlimKAT beta releases or should I try out one of the already available 4.4 ROMs? Which 4.4 ROM do you like best and why?

KitKang, @mastamoon's builds, @sspencer10's builds. All are great

Hopefully this thread doesn't get shut down. I like the objective discussions on roms. Helps make decisions.
Anyways, I've tried all but the new gummy rom, and I've had the best luck with mastamoon's. Hit 5 hours of screen on time (probably 15 total on the charge). All the 4.4 roms are pretty smooth, to be honest. They do have the typical aosp issues of wonky camera's/galleries and signal issues in low signal areas. Also a bit different navigating to the SD card. I'm back on tw right now for stability, but will probably get my flashing fix again in a week or so.

Threads like these are always shut down as this is a development site meant for those who are making the ROMs ,apps and mods. The community helps with getting these things to work and with solving problems you may have with the ROMs, apps and mods. I am sure one of the moderators will mention something similar before closing it down. I personally wouldn't mind helping but I have read these types of threads and they usually lead to unnecessary debates.
Yeah this is gonna turn into an argument about roms. I would say try Slim Kat beta since ur on Slim already. Otherwise I would go with Invisiblek's builds or my current Paranoid Android 4.0
Definitely agree with you both. These usually turn into fan boy brawls, although I wish they didn't. It's nice to simply hear someone else's experience with a rom. However, even that has to be taken with a grain of salt because of user error, different phone, bad downloads, etc. So many variables. I just don't like it when someone says "just try it" when simple friendly Q & A in a forum may help someone make a decision that ultimately benefits them. I read a crap ton of each thread before I go asking noob questions, but sometimes it's nice to defer to someone who's been running that rom for a while to answer, especially if you haven't been. Many times the op instructions are outdated and people say "what you want is 10 pages back, read it why don't you." I have no problem with someone asking nicely looking to gain knowledge about any of this stuff on the site. To expect someone to read everything is a bit ridiculous. That's why these discussions, if handled correctly, are nice. Just my two cents.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
All the above, and the fact that XDA is not really a support site. Users need to try them all to make this determination on their own.
And, yes...thread is closed.
