One S Asurion Replacement - HTC One S

I haven't been able to locate my one S since this morning when I went to the gym. I called/went back and no one has turned anything in.
My question is, is it even worth it to go through Asurion at this point? I have a $150 deductible (I believe) and I'm afraid they will just give me a low end Android phone. Are they still replacing the the S with an S? Or should I just go through T-mobile and get a new phone?

Well, a One S for $150 isn't that bad of a deal.
Going to get a new phone from T-mobile will be more expensive than that. (if you are still under your 2 year contract)

It's not, but I'm wondering if they would still replace it with a One S? When I had to get my original Nexus One replaced, they replaced it with the original Galaxy, which I hated.

You really have me thinking about what I would do if I lost my phone.
Now, I just read this. Maybe you could lock it.

Anyhow, back to you. I still think the best deal would be to go through them, you may need to put on your "jackass" hat and complain to them until they give you something that you like.

using that link, I just located my phone.
I'm on Maximus HD Rom, I just checked the google settings, The Lock Phone, factory reset option was unchecked. (I have now checked it) But the locate phone option was checked.

Hi damir831! Great question! Our goal is to get you reconnected as quickly as possible with a like-for-like device. Occasionally your original device may not be available at the time of your claim, so we will offer a comparable model to get you up and running as quickly as possible. There are several factors that could create this situation; for example, if your device was discontinued or no longer produced. If this were to be the case, we would discuss your options with you at that time, so you can make an informed decision.
Since inventory changes by the moment and can vary by carrier, we cannot confirm availability until the claim process has begun. We encourage you to visit www.phoneclaim.com to file your claim. If you are not happy with the device available at the time you file, you can cancel the claim at that time or reach out to us to discuss other options.
When making your decision about next steps, please keep in mind that our replacement devices come with a 12-month limited warranty and do not require you to renew your contract to receive a replacement. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance. We are here to help!

[Q] stock rom or close to stock rom

Hi
can someone direct me to some stock/close-to stock roms for lg g2x? i sold the phone. do you think i need to revert it to unroot and put back 2.3.3 stock rom before sending it out? what would you do?
Thanks,
sold it to a private party? no reason you "have" to do anything to it. the stock rom can be found in the dev section though.
yes i am selling to people on ebay. thats private i guess. i search through the development section but it not easy to spot it.
Second page in the Dev section...
Stock Gingerbread OTA 2.3.3 Rooted flashable zip v1.0.0
Yeah, you WANT to set anything you sell on eBay back to stock....
Why? Because they might take it for tech support after they buy it.
I learned that lesson the hard way 2 or 3 years ago...
When I got my G1, I sold my old HTC Touch Vogue on eBay. It was unlocked and running a Rom from the forums here on xda (NFSFan's I believe)... It stated so *VERY CLEARLY* in the description.
Well, the buyer took it to the Sprint store to activate it. Now, I knew it could be activated because I'd activated it on another line just to make sure. However, the guy at the Sprint store took ONE LOOK at it and refused to activate it since it wasn't running Sprint firmware.
The buyer emailed me back asking for help, and I assured him that it could be activated, and gave him a link to instructions on how to do so, and even gave him my phone# in case he had any questions.
Next thing I know, a chargeback hit my Paypal account for the full purchase price of the phone... apparently the guy took it back to the Sprint Store who again refused to activate it - and this time called his credit card company from the Sprint Store and the rep told them the device was broken.. So they charged back my account...
Thing is, nothing was wrong with the device, and the buyer knew what he was buying. Not only did it get charged back, but Sprint confiscated the device claiming the reason it couldn't be activated this time was that it was stolen (which it certainly wasn't)... so I was out the full sale price PLUS did not get the device returned...
I learned my lesson - NEVER EVER SELL A ROOTED/CUSTOM FIRMWARE DEVICE. Ever. Period. Sell it in FACTORY CONDITION because you never know what kind of idiot is going to get it on the other end.
sorry to hear your unfortunate story. i guess i will unroot it and do a factory rom install

Need some help

So I decided to try AT&T(Currently with Sprint) just to see how much better the network was due to how horrible Sprints network is. So I went and purchased the AT&T One X. I absolutely loved the phone and the difference in download speeds is just ridiculous. Well I had the phone for about a 1 1/2 days and was having a problem where the phone would just randomly reboot and was getting to be a major pain. So I went to AT&T and asked if I could swap it for a new one. After about 30 minutes of going back and forth and threatening to cancel my contract they agreed to give me a replacement but I would have to pay the $35 re-stocking fee, but they didn't have the color I wanted so they found another store that had one. I went there to pick it up and noticed that the seal on the box had already been cut. I thought, maybe they just cut it open while I was on my way. I also noticed the guy couldn't get the phone to turn on and come to find out it was completely dead, which was weird because the first one I bought had almost a full charge when I got it. So I took the phone and after I got home I was looking around in the settings menu and noticed that the battery had over 2 days of use and I only had the phone for an hour. So I called the store and asked the guy why that was and he told me they were probably doing tests with it in the store. I told him I didn't want a phone they were messing with in the store and that I wanted a brand new one. Well he hung up on me. So I went back to the store I bought the first one from to see if there was anything they could do and they said for 1, I can only swap out the phone once within my 30 day period and 2, since the phone came from the other store they would have to be the ones to replace it and if I wanted to cancel my service I would have to pay another $35 restocking fee. So my question/questions are, (1) Has anyone noticed that there battery had been used for any amount of time when you first got the phone and (2) For anyone that may work or has worked for AT&T in the past, am I entitled to a new phone since clearly my phone had been used and was not new? Sorry for such a long post but I thought I would get the best advice if the whole story was laid out. I know getting a phone that had been played with for a couple hours may not be a big deal to some but to me I paid for a new phone and that's what I want. Thanks in advance for any help or advice you may be able to give.

When I got my one X they opened it for the first time right in front of me, it still had the plastic seal on the box.
Go back and demand they give you a new phone. You should never have had to pay the restocking fee for the first one and you sure as hell shouldn't have to get stuck with a phone that wasn't new. Good to see you here, btw. I hope you decide to stick with the One X, it's an amazing phone... I don't miss my E4GT at all now that I have this thing. Gonna be theming for us?

Thanks guys for all the feedback. I really appreciate it. Ya, they made me feel like I'm crazy for wanting a new phone. As long as they agree to give me a new phone I plan on keeping it and I definitely plan on building themes for it. If not then they can have it back and I will stick with what I have. I have never been treated so bad. One thing I think they could get a few lessons in from Sprint are Customer Service. By the way, good to see you here as well.

Ya, I took it in and the guy that was there said he was the one that personally opened it and he opened it to show a customer and may have forgot to turn the phone off. He said that he would not take the phone back because there was nothing wrong with it. Even after I threatened to cancel my service he said, that's fine but I will not take it back since there is nothing wrong with it. He said if there was something wrong with it that would be a different story but since there isn't then there was nothing he could do about it.

That's kinda BS but whatever... if there's nothing wrong with it then I'd just keep it. Think of it this way, it's still for all intents and purposes brand new, still has a full warranty (though not too many of us here care about warranties lol), and if something does turn up to be bad with it, then you can exchange it. Don't let your bad experience with a couple idiots at the stores overshadow the excitement of getting such an amazing phone. I know I am completely obsessed with mine, I really feel the same way I did when I got my OG EVO 4G 2 years ago... not even my E4GT was able to give me that feeling again. This thing is so damn cool, just enjoy it and forget about all this BS. That's my two cents

I agree. It really left a bad taste in my mouth and I was really considering just canceling my service because the customer service I've received from AT&T has been horrible so far. But I absolutely love this phone and it's almost impossible to think about giving it up. Thanks for all the advice.
I'd call at&t customer service and complain about paying a restock fee on that first return. defective devices NEVER should have a restock fee. Since you're new customer, and can cancel service with NO penalty, I'd be shocked if they didn't give you some kind of account credit, probably more than the 35 dollars you were charged. I've found AT&T's phone reps to be very good in the past and as always you catch more flies with honey.
Good luck.
Tiff,
Was this a corporate store or one those preferred retail stores? If it's a corporate store you need to call AT&T over the phone and tell them how you were treated. Let them know the whole story and that you were charged $35. That's not what is suppose to happen.
If it's one of those preferred retailer stores, I'd return it and go to the corporate store and buy it there.

You should definitely call AT&T and get the restocking fee back. It's crazy to make you pay extra just to have a working phone.
Don't know if they'll give you a new phone though. Did you do a factory data reset on the one you have to wipe it?
Call customer service and ask for retention department first off when they transfer u tell the rep Ur thinking about canceling and tell them y(Ur story) and see what they say..also u could call att corporate hq I did that once...filled. formal complaint with presidents assistant and Mr. Riko griffin called me back next day and gave me..I said GAVE me TWO vivid at no cost all cuz some dumb a** told me that he COULD give me a discount but wasn't going to and didn't have to tell me y lol so if u tell them Ur story they will fix it

[Q] Question about returns of damaged devices

Hi, and if I'm breaking any etiquette or there's a post someone can point me to, feel free to give me a smack upside the head!
Here's my issue. I've had the S3 since release, and it's been a great phone to me. On my birthday this past weekend, a friend decided to play a prank and was going to do something to my phone (probably change my background to something stupid, who knows.) I noticed my phone missing very quickly, called it using another phone, and in his drunken stupor he tried to "cutely" hide it in his jacket and completely missed the pocket and threw the phone, quite hard, onto the floor. This resulted in a crack screen, but the phone does turn on yet.
Now here's my issue. This phone has been rooted since the instant I was able to, and was running a KitKat ROM at the time of the accident. I did have the extra insurance, which I utilized and filled out honestly without thinking about the fact the phone isn't stock (next day I was still a tad drunk. Mid 30's crisis and all that.)
So now I have to return the phone. What is my best bet? Should I attempt to get it back to 4.3 using these instructions (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2586319) if I can even get into the recovery blindly? Should I damage it more? Am I worrying for no real reason at all? I'm at a bit of a loss here. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks all.

If you filed an insurance claim, don't worry about it. Asurion doesn't check to see the OS, like Verizon does when you try to 'warranty' the device. If it's broken, they sell it for parts or they refurbish it, flash it stock and Verizon is never the wiser to what they had to do to your device.
I speak from personal experience.

Great, that's excellent to hear. It's in pretty bad shape, honestly. I generally take good care of my devices, but it's been around the block a few times now. This is the first time I've actually ever had to use my insurance, so I wasn't sure about how they handle it.
I had heard some bad things about the replacement devices they send out due to being refurbishes, but so far the replacement device I've gotten works well. It's battery lasts for quite a bit more than the two I switched between before, too, which is nice.

Don't worry about the refurbishes... I've had 5 total in my years with Verizon and have never had serious issues. AND if you have the 'extended warranty' coverage with them, like I do, if the phone wonks out, take it to verizon as a warranty replacement. The only problem I ever had was a wonked modem (hardware) on an old Droid RAZR; I took it to VZ and they warrantied it it, giving me a brand new one. Note, you might get a refurb through the warranty process, but VZ has a lemon rule, so if you have to return 3 of the same device, you can get a different model, brand new.

Lemon rule is not true. You MIGHT get an employee who is soft and doesn't want to hear you complain about your phone anymore and make you an offer they're not supposed to. If you do, good for you I guess. But there is no lemon rule. Your warranty covers the phone you purchased, not a different model.

I'm a tech in a corporate call center. They don't have techs in corporate stores anymore. I don't know about vendors, but all replacements go through either tech support or customer service. Like I said, you might get someone who just wanted you to go away and offer you something you are not entitled to, and of course there are instances when exceptions are made, but as a policy, warranty covers purchased device.

Yeah definitely don't worry about "refurbs". Most refurbs are phones that have nothing wrong with them and were sent back because of user error or they wanted a different phone and thought if they said there was something wrong with it they'd get a new one. Refurb really only means it can't be sold as new.

I dealt with a similar situation in my old compy shop 10 something years ago. We were resellers for a few brands (Acer, Lenova, some others) and the Acer "refurb" units were pretty much all returns to big box stores from people that decided that the laptop didn't fit their needs. Lenova refurbs, on the other hand, were just that. They were still very reliable, though.
Ive heard of the "lemon rule" but never had the option. Wat ive heard from am employees its not a policy but they make exception like that to keep customers happy and coming back. Its more of a YMMV type of thing. Honestly i wanna work at a vzw store ill put xda as my reference . Once i was opening up an insurance claim over the fone the lady was nice look up my info amd told me of i had extended warranty wich i did to go tp vzw and ask for a new fone. The lady was nice most reps would of jst taken my money. Is the deductible still $100 for thr S3

[Q] MAXX Dev Edition is no more .. recommendations?

I have a MAXX Developer Edition that suddenly dropped dead a couple weeks ago. Off it went to Motorola for warranty repair.
Now they say they don't have parts to fix it, have no idea when parts will be available nor replacements. They are offering me $$ back or another model (presumably with appropriate compensation, it'll be a couple days before I will have a chance to call them to talk about it). I don't have a sense whether waiting for a batch of parts to be manufactured will do me any good, since the dev edition has apparently been out of stock for some time.
I really liked the Maxx because of the big battery, but I also really want a phone I can root. I am one of those who is not comfortable with the mystery overseas unlocking service, so that option is out.
Anyone have any suggestions? I'm considering waiting for the Galaxy S5 to come out, but I'm not fond of the huge amount of crapware Samsung loads on their phones, not to mention what Verizon loads on. Plus the rumors of the limitations on using an sd card on the S5 to begin with.
Thanks for suggestions,
ken
They're still listing the Dev Edition for sale and they don't have parts to fix yours? Call me crazy but that's a load of malarkey if I've ever heard one - but then again, this is Motorola we're talking about, I suppose. I'm staring at the order page right this second in another tab... just put it in a cart... just verified it's in stock and ready to go.
I think you should call/contact Motorola and as soon as you get the first person on the phone, immediately say "I want to speak to a Supervisor," and when that person gets on the phone say "I want to speak to your Supervisor or Manager..." and don't back down till you get the third person and then lay it out for them:
If it's a legitimate warranty repair (I'm guessing that it is since you sent it back to 'em or dropped it off for the job) and they're lacking parts, they need to replace the entire phone, period.
I'd be all over 'em like stink on you-know-what and I wouldn't get off it till they shipped me the replacement overnight just for the trouble they've already caused with the BS excuse.
But that's just me... <hint, hint>
If moto gives you the run around and says it's still out of stock but you still want the maxx unlocked you have one choice. Get them to send you a regular maxx and use the China boot loader unlock for 40 bucks.

I have a dev edition and there really isn't a full warranty to begin with. Moto told me that if you unlock the bootloader you have the warranty, but if you root you don't. As if people aren't going to root their unlocked phone.
Really didn't know that. If you decide to go this route I would see how much a maxx is now off contract. If they are replacing a dev with a regular maxx I wouldn't pay the dev price.
Sent from my Chinese connection unlocked and can't be stopped Droid Maxx
What a load of crap, unless they can no longer repair stock Droid Maxxes, too. The parts in the developer edition are exactly the same as the stock Droid Maxx, except the printing on the back that says it's a developer edition.
The developer edition was back in stock on their web site yesterday. It's still there now. http://www.motorola.com/us/shop-all...r-Edition/m-Droid-Maxx-Developer-Edition.html
I'll try to give them a call tomorrow, and see what they say. If the DE is truly in stock again to order new, they have no excuse not to cough one up.
I'll post whatever response I get.
p.s. Yes I was perfectly aware about the China Connection. As I mentioned in my OP, I don't feel comfortable going that route. I am aware IMEIs in stock at retailers are not kept secure, but I see no sense in just handing it to persons unknown (I mean, why don't I see anyone posting their IMEIs on this public board if it's such a nonissue?). To each his own, everybody has their own risk calculus. I'm certainly not griping at anyone making a different choice.
Also, I coughed up the $$ for DE so I could muck with my phone without losing the warranty. That's important to me too - though that calculation will change if Moto gives me a runaround when I actually try to use it!
p.p.s. theycallmerayj: I am skeptical that the person who told you that has a clue. Certainly there is nothing in writing saying that, and Moto went through the bother to include a very explicit warning sheet about unlocking in the phone's box (on top of the phone, no way to miss it). Likewise in their unlocking pages, they go through a lot of words warning that unlocking will void warranty except for DE phones, but not a single byte spent mentioning rooting. *shrug* Besides, unlocking is kinda a weird thing to do if it isn't immediately followed by rooting or flashing an alternate image ...
I saw you were uncomfortable with the Chinese method I was just stating it is your ONLY choice if they don't have the dev phone and you really want an unlocked boot loader. Guess you have to weigh your immediate need vs. being uncomfortable.

OK I spoke to the second-tier support folks. They are indeed unable to get parts or do anything with my unit. Nor can they just send me a new one from stock. They are unable to access that stream of hardware. Go figure.
However what they did offer was if I ordered a new one from the Moto website, and send them proof-of-purchase, they would fully reimburse me. So it's essentially the same thing as a replacement, just done the hard way.
My guess is warranty support is handled by a third-party contractor, not by Motorola themselves. That could explain the inability to access the stock of new units. I'm further guessing they could only replace units with refurbished ones but the DE has not had enough volume for there to be refurb units available.
Well, a new unit is ordered, I'm now waiting with bated breath for the 7-day waiting period (whatever they call the shipping latency they mention on their website).
So my post title "Dev edition is no more" has been shown to be wrong. I like being wrong.

Well, it was out of stock for weeks, and wasn't even listed under developer phones to backorder, so it sure seemed like the dev edition was no more. I just stumbled onto the listing the other day.

I can appreciate everything you said there, but as noted, the Dev Edition and the regular consumer model of the Droid MAXX are the exact same phones - there is no difference at all in terms of the hardware, none of it, the difference lies in having the unlocked bootloader from the factory in the Dev Edition and a locked one in the consumer model. Sounds like the people you've talked to are just coming up with excuse after excuse to not do what they're legally obligated to do: fix the damned phone or replace it, and now with that convoluted mess of a solution - "Buy a new one, we'll pay you back..." - there's just something not quite right going on there.
Seems like Motorola is still doing the same old crap that infuriated me a few years ago when they pulled the "screw you" thing with the original Atrix and Photon in terms of ICS updates: they just love doing things that piss off their customers it seems. Only reason I have a Droid MAXX at this moment is because it was completely free, I traded a donated laptop for it so it didn't cost me a cent out of pocket - I made a promise to myself that I'd never actually purchase Motorola hardware again so at least I haven't broken that yet.
I can't comprehend why Motorola would make such ridiculous claims over "parts" and the Dev Edition warranty repair you're rightly allowed to have access to - personally I would have just paid some local shop to fix the microUSB port issue (given THEY would be able to get the part(s) needed, of course, and with the popularity of Droid hardware and the fact that the Droid MAXX and Droid Ultra use effectively the same hardware in that respect) and then paid to do that Chinese unlock and seen what happened.
Regardless, good luck with the final resolution, I hope it all works out and you're back up and running with a Dev Edition soon.

Setting up a replacement Pixel

So I have been loving my pixel and I baby it. However this morning out of nowhere when the phone vibrates it sounds like it is buzzing and probably something is loose inside causing this. Seems others have had this. Long story short looks like I need a replacement. I came from an iphone so it took me a while to set up this phone as ideally as I want. I have rooted it and have TWRP flashed.
Is the best way to set up my new phone when it comes in to back up this one with TWRP, root the new one, flash TWRP on and restore a back up? Will this remember all my settings? Will it back up my apps and info, photos?, notes?.
I'm looking for the fastest way to get set up again
Thanks in advance.

You should use Titanium Backup to back up all user apps+data. Copy that backup to your PC. When you get the new phone, root, install TB and restore. Done!
Do you have a Verizon Pixel? If you do, and the replacement device has the latest security patch, the previous advice is moot since you can't root it any more (locked bootloader).

Is the replacement on the way already? When you get a new Pixel there is a way to transfer all your programs and settings to your new device at the initial setup even without root yet. But you will want to unlock the bootloader first which will cause a factory reset and then do the transfer. I did it from my n5x and it worked great. I wasn't even unlocked or rooted and I'm still not. I haven't used Titanium backup obviously and don't feel the need to any longer. But if you want root then you might as well backup everything and restore what the transfer misses. Best part of the transfer is that all your settings get ported over to the new device, i.e. sounds, preferences, security settings etc. Titanium will not do that.
Alternately, you can set it all up again which is sometimes fun. It lets you change a bunch of stuff and make it like a new device all over again. But as you said, that does take time. Anyway, good luck with the new one.

Well currently arguing with google. Since I didn't buy it from google store but a carrier they want me to send the phone in first before they ship the new one. If you buy it from google then they send you a new one first and put a charge on hold on your CC until old one is received. I asked them to do the same for me but they said it's policy. I'm having the issue escalated.
The steps you mentioned is exactly why I want google to send me one first, through my carrier I would probably have to swap it right away and never have both in my hand.
If I get google to send me one, i'll do both things. Root then transfer via google's method and then use titanium as well for the rest of the stuff.

I don't remember seeing your response on this on your thread. Why wouldn't you guys return at Verizon? You bought these at Verizon, right? Something doesn't add up. Just curious now. I've never had a Verizon exchange not show up at my door the next day, if ordered before 4pm.

I haven't been back on XDA until now and I haven't checked my thread until just now actually lol. But I bought mine from a different retail store called Nebraska Furniture Mart they have a store in Kansas city Mo where I live and they sell the Verizon variant. I called Verizon first and they told me to contact google. Maybe there was just a misunderstanding with the rep I spoke to? I have tried lots of different options but all are pointing to sending the phone in first because I'm past the 14 day remorse period?

Mine is not from verizon, i'm in Canada. With it being christmas my carrier currently has this phone online only. They have a $300 off activation credit going on right now so have had a huge amount of order and it's couple of weeks back log.
Just to back up the fact that Verizon requires you to go through the manufacturer if it's still on the OEM's warranty, the same happened with my LG G Pad 8.3 LTE (VK810). I was paying for the absolute best Verizon warranty on all three lines, and less than six months after I got this device I had a problem with the screen on the LTE (not dropped or cracked, just not working right), and Verizon wouldn't lift a finger to help me and said I had to go through LG.
Totally off topic but luckily LG gave me the absolute best warranty service I ever received. They had me take my device to a FedEx, LG paid for FedEx to box it up and have it shipped to them. I dropped it off on a Monday evening about 5 PM and the tablet was back in my hands fully repaired (not replaced with a refurb) on Friday of the same week around the same time. Sorry for the OT part. Too bad LG bootloader unlockable devices are rare except maybe through some other carriers (T-Mobile?).
