LightFlow and Hangouts? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Maybe it's just me, but I've not been able to get LightFlow to work with Hangouts. I've set up contacts, and specific colors/sounds, but they get over ruled by the default Hangouts notifications (for SMS at least). Has anybody got this working? Do I have to disable the default Hangouts notification for LightFlow to work?
Version 3.12.5 - 07 November 2013
- Fixed android app store links
- Contact specific notifications for google voice
- Contact specific notifications for hangouts (with some limitations)
- Workaround for nexus 5 not being able to have the led always on
- Fixes for kitkat stock email app
- Support for sms hangouts integration in kitkat
- Better layout of notification list for full hd screens
- Fixed clearing of some sms messages in android 4.3 upwards

just wanted to say i also have this problem.

Light Flow has had a problem playing nice with Hangouts so far, even after the newest update which claims to address these problems. They were working somewhat okay before (albeit notifications were highly inconsistent), but now they just don't work at all with Hangouts. If you read the comments on the Google Play page for Light Flow, a number of users have mentioned this too. So I'm hoping it's a known issue and will be fixed in the next update.

Mine works fine. 3/4 of the time. There's sometimes it doesn't clear the notification. This is for the SMS integration in hangouts. I have custom contacts for colors too. And I have to manually clear it.

try going into the individual notifications you have set and for the clearing method for each one select :Screen on, rather than manually do so etc etc.

I'm now getting duplicate notifications for my specific contacts that I set up in LightFlow. I can get around this by disabling the SMS Hangouts notification, but then it doesn't make any sounds for the contacts that are not set up in LightFlow.
I wish Google/Android devs would actually let me assign different notification sounds (similar to ringtones) for SMS/Hangouts from the contact itself... I've already requested this in the Hangouts product forum https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!forum/hangouts

Use "ledblinker" it works great! Make sure to restart your phone after installation! Lightblow doesn't work

when you search leadblinker in the playstore, it's one word btw

Have you tried contacting the developer through the app? It'll include a diagnostic log, and just explain to him what the issue is. I did this and he literally replied a minute later, explaining that there is a fix on the way and also a workaround to use in the meantime.

it's not a problem with the app, because it's working correctly, but it's an annoyance due to google designing the way hangouts can notify.

I'm pretty sure mine is working OK. I checked settings and I have the following checked;
Enable Light Flow
Root Mode
Run in foreground
Enable Clear All
Accessibility Check
Then for Hangouts SMS and MMS
Enabled
Pull Down
Switch Screen On
Last, set pulse notification light on in Settings, Display.
Hope that helps. Oh, I also have the Lite version.

Mine works fine for SMS and that seems to be about it. I don't really get other notifications often so I can't recall if they work, but SMS is most important to me... root mode, does NOT run in foreground, and SMS apps + MMS set to white. Hangouts is set to yellow but I use it for SMS and it notifies me in white.

After the recent update of Light Flow, now my hangout SMS led notification doesn't work. I tried resetting my phone and doing all the tricks for Nexus 5 but it would not work. The only way to make it work is to set up all notifications for hangouts and disable the SMS notifications. Im wondering if they changed the SMS notifications for hangouts or something. Other then that I have no problems with it for now.

Thanks, that works on my Galaxy Nexus running 4.4.

Light Flow seemed to be the source of much battery drain for me. I'm having more luck with light manager.

I use Light Manager and it works like a charm, however, I don't have it set to different colors for SMS, MMS, and Hangouts since I use the Hangouts app for all 3

I thought the LED (hardware) is white only.

[Q] Wake up on notification

One thing that bugs me about the Captivate is that I frequently miss notifications while my phone is locked and set to vibrate (the vibrate is very weak for notifications). What I would like is a way to force the phone to "wake up" when any notification is received. By wake up, I mean for the screen to turn on for the default screen time out.
Is there any way of making this happen with an app or a mod? The NoLED app is a good idea but a battery drain... I'd prefer something than only turns on the screen for a minute when the notification is received.

Isn't that just for text messages? I would prefer something that works for all notifications including GMail and Google voice.
Try searching for mmf in the Market. It doesn't do the exact thing that what you want, but it will turn on the backlighting and flash the screen on/off when it receives sms, voice and gmail.

Thanks! That is a good start... if he adds GVoice support, it would be almost perfect.
EDIT - Did not realize you were the author! If there is a way to add GVoice support it would be awesome.
I've looked around, but couldn't find a method like they did with Gmail. I'll see if I can figure out indirectly watching GV's notification tones though.

Yeah I think the guy who wrote the NoLED app ran into similar issues with GV and other notifications... it not work in vibrate mode. Thanks for checking it out.
A blank/silent mp3 might work w/ vibrate... GV right now just doesn't seem to have a way of announcing that a new message is available like Gmail. I've put an updated version on the Market with notification tone monitoring. Seems to work fine with the limited testing I did with GVoice. It's disabled by default for now, so just toggle it on. hth

Double notifications / mystery notification

I have a Samsung Charge, and I have noticed that every time I receive a new GMail message, I get two notifications.
I started turning off various notification sources, but I still get an audible ring & phone vibration whenever a new GMail message arrives.
Where is the mystery / duplicate notification coming from?
Thanks,

Which notification sources have you turned off?
The GMail app has its own notification source. And, I *think*, you can set it per account (not sure).
There is also Sound setting Notifications, not sure if GMail leverages that or not.
Are you using any third-party email applications?

I have my GMail set for "Email Notifications" disabled. I would think that would be enough to prevent getting GMail notifications.
I also have ADW Notifier installed, but it doesn't really have anything about displaying notifications other than the number bubble. Regardless, I uninstalled ADW Notifier, and didn't see any difference.
I also have K-9 Mail. I turned off all notifications on that, and also saw no effect. K-9 doesn't even interface with my GMail, so I don't see where it would make a difference anyways.
I don't have any other apps that should be associated to my mail programs.
Bump.
I have found that I only get the "Notification That Can't Be Killed" now just with new GMail messages. No other "mystery" notifications are occurring.
To see if I could fix this, I started using the TouchWiz Email application to consolidate all my email accounts, including GMail. I got rid of my K-9 mail app.
Now, I get a silent GMail notification from the TouchWiz Email app (which is what I want), but it seems like I still get an audible default notification tone from Google's GMail application whenever new GMail arrives.
I can't figure out why the GMail app Notifications are occurring. I think I have them all disabled, but I must be missing something ...
Please help ...

I have found one solution to fix this problem, though it shouldn't be necessary:
I purchased "Bloat Freezer", and "froze" the Google Gmail system application.
I'm curious (though, I didn't see many responses to this thread), has anyone tried turning off their GMail notifications in the Google GMail app?
I am wondering if turning off GMail Notifications even works on the SamChg.
I'll try later this evening when I'm not at work.
I actually always run my phone in silent mode, I am kind of against ringtones, chimes, etc. and thus have never had any issues with Gmail notifications because I've never needed to really turn them off.
I'll report back.

Thanks, burningembers! I'll be interested in what you find out.
BTW, I don't know if this is important, but I am running the Debloated v.4 ROM.
Sent via my Borg implant over the VZW network.
I have another nugget of information on this problem.
I unfroze the GMail application, and set my SamChg to sync my GMail again. However, in the GMail application, I set a different notification tone than the default notification.
Now, when I receive a new GMail, I get 2 audible notifications: One for the newly selected notification tone in the GMail application, and a second tone that is my default notification tone. Sometimes, they will play simultaneously.
I'm guessing that undesired, second "default" notification tone is generated as a result of the Google "account sync" itself.
How can I turn this off? And, again - Can anyone test this out for me to see if it is a global problem, or just my configuration?
Thanks!

[APP][>= ICS] GMail Unreads Notifier

Hi,
I present a new application, compatible with Gmail for Android (versions for Ice Cream Sandwitch and higher).
I will implements recurrent notifications for unread messages (in inbox or prioritary inbox).
Due the limitations of the Gmail API, that exports the total unread messages count, nor the messages, the notifier can't detect new messages in certain scenarios.
By example:
The notifier works fine in this cases:
* Receive a new message
* Read messages in the device
The notifier not detects a new message if
* You have X unread messages and (in another device, like PC) you read Y messages and Z new messages are arrived before next phone sync (and Y + Z < X)
In other cases, the app works fine.
Comments are welcome!
For use it, you can disable ringtone notifications (setting notification sound to silent) in Gmail (prioritary or normal inbox depending of your choice), but not notifications (i like gmail notifications and I don't have included in my app),
the go my app and configure repeats, sound and vibration the enable the service in the top-right of the screen.

not working for me
I am running android 4.1.1 and gmail v4.2.1. App doesn't seem to do anything.
I configured:
1. Gmail app notification on but silent.
2. On your app picked acct, turned off priority inbox (to monitor plain inbox), picked ringtone, turned off silent hours.
3. To enable, the on/off switch says off in gray (when disabled it says on in blue - a little confusing).
When new Gmail comes through, I am only getting the standard Gmail visual notification. No sound.
Am I missing something?
I really want this to work because I too like the standard Gmail notification, I just want it to repeat.

It works now (D'oh!). I swear I tried both toggles before. Oh well, thanks:good:
Well, I still have a couple suggestions:
1. Change the on/off to "enabled" and "disabled". The problem is that on/off refers both to the state of on and off and to the process of turning on and turning off, so you're never quite sure what you're doing when you push the button.
2. If possible, and this sounds more complicated, make the beeping stop after the notification in the pull down has been dismissed, even if the email hasn't been read. The reason I like the standard Gmail notification is because you can see what the email is straight from the notification area and dismiss it without even opening Gmail. But if you keep on getting beeps, you have to open it anyway, so there's no point.

Hi,
Happy to known that's working for you!
1)
love the switch, i think don't need to be changed.
2)
not possible to make that, due to the limitations of the Gmail API, that exports only the label names and the number of unread messages, but with the new Gmail app (published just a few minutes ago), you can archive emails from the notifications bar

sorry,
possibly i don't understand, but i think the switch is ok.
if switch value is "on" (blue color) the app monitorizes the gmail inbox or prioritary inbox and notifies the new messages (and the repeats)
if switch value is "off" (gray color) the app don't monitorizes (and don't repeats).
is not?

Yes, the blue color indicating on is great. Playing with it some more, what confused me is that when it's on and blue and you press the on (right side of switch) it changes state and vice versa for off.
So when it's blue (on), only the left side of switch should respond to touch. You should not be able to turn off by clicking "on" or turn on by clicking "off". The fact that I was confused says something (besides "what an idiot!").
But anyway, I'm really curious about the new Gmail version. I went to update and nothing showed as an available update.

chompSMS with Gear S2 3G?

Is anybody successfully using chompSMS as their default text app and getting all of texting features on their watch? (I have a Galxy S6 on Verizon in the US).
Following an old thread for this issue on the Gear 1, I was able to get most of the features working. The issue, lies with the fact that the watch wants you to use the default messaging app "Messages" on Samsung phones (which is horrible). I have notifications for the default "Messages" app turned on and silenced on my phone and not showing notifications to prevent duplicates on my phone. I will copy the process from the other thread and link it below.
The best I am currently achieving is that when I receive a text on my phone, I get the chompSMS notification on the watch and can quick reply to it by viewing the text through the notification screen, or when it firsts pops up on the watch face. But if I go to the "Messages" app on the watch to look through a conversation, all I can see are the sent messages from the phone, and not the replies. I am unsure if this is because part of the chompSMS functions are working, or part of the "Messages" app on the phone are working. Either way, Id like to be able to see both the sent and received texts here.
Upon opening the "Messages" app on the watch, I get the message "Unable to receive messages on the Gear. Change the default messaging app to "Messages". I just skip past it to get to the messages.
Has anyone been able to get all of this working with chompSMS? I am unwilling to switch apps on my phone but if you have gotten other apps working, the process could be helpful to me. I would think there would be a way to trick the phone to use two default messaging apps or trick into not requiring one. I haven't rooted my phone but would consider if somebody has gotten it to work that way.

This is what I did...
I uninstalled Go SMS (I'm not sure if this is necessary), and reinstalled.
In the Go SMS :
In the "Notification Settings":
Enable Notifications --> checked.
In the Defualt notification settings:
Vibrate --> checked.
Blink LED -- checked.
In the "Other setting" menu:
Disable other message notification -- Un-checked
In the stock messaging app:
Under "More" tab:
Notifications --> checked
Select ringtone -- > set to "silent"
Vibrate --> Un-checked
Preview message --> checked.
Open the Application manager in the settings of the phone:
Swipe over to the "ALL" tab, and scroll down until you find the "Messages" app. Un-check "show notifications" This will prevent double notifications in the panel.
This should do it. When I received a text, the first time I clicked "show on device", the option popped up on the phone to select the default program between Go SMS and stock messaging. I clicked Go SMS, and set to "Always". Now it opens up Go SMS everytime.
Hope this helps some of you!
Thanks for any help you guys. Much appreciated.

I use Handcent and can't get it to work either. The watch always tell me to change the default messaging app. I asked Handcent (through their facebook page) several weeks ago if they were going to update it to support the Gear S2 and they have totally ignored me (and anybody else that posts there). They have a google group now that I submitted a request to join WEEKS ago and its still pending. Because of that, I switched to the default messaging app so it would work on the watch. Apparently handcent isn't interested in helping people that use their app. Perhaps you have better luck with ChompSMS than I have had with Handcent.

Interstingly, I emailed the people at chompSMS the other day and they got back to me very quickly that they have notified the dev team about it (who knows what will come of that).
It seems simple enough. In fact even if the third party apps could be used without being the default messenger, and not show the "make default app" banner when you use them, everything would work great. You'd just follow the instructions i linked above and all the features would work because the stock Messages app would be the default but not be giving you notifications.

Edge Lighting not responding to Facebook Messenger

Facebook notifications work however Messenger doesn't? Seems rather odd, anyone managed to get around it?
Is fb messenger set as the default messaging app?
Edge lighting has a list of apps you can enable but Messenger is not in there. Facebook app is in the list but Messenger isn't for some reason. I'm wondering if it's Samsung or Messenger developers who have to tweak something for Messenger to be in that list and have Edge lighting working.

Same for me, but at least we found why edge lighting was not working, it's a good start. To have the actual app notification message instead of the Light Flow icon, I think the app needs to support natively "wake up screen" for notifications.
I don't know if the Light Flow developers would be able to pass the notification informations (variables?) from the app to Lighting Edge but maybe it'd be a good idea to give them a hint about it. I did send an email earlier today to Messenger developers about it but I doubt they'll receive it or open it, let alone actually do something about it.. but I tried.
I really like the Edge Lighting concept and I hope Samsung will keep developing it and one day soon we'll be able to choose the lighting colors for each app, because right now it's blue, no matter what app.
Got it to work, Kinda!

The full fledged facebook messenger app didn't work for me, so I tried the messenger lite version, and much to my surprise, the pill notifications with edge lighting now work when I receive facebook messages!
The main downside is that quick reply in-line in the notification card is not supported in facebook messenger lite, although I think i can make due without this, because when I used direct reply, the notification badge would never go away until i long-pressed the app and manually cleared it (even if I opened the app and viewed the "unread" message).
Hope this helps! I have managed to get most of my apps working with edge notifications with playing around. Sometimes I have had to go into specific apps notification settings and play around with toggles and they started working all of the sudden. The last one I'm trying to get to work is the stock email app, but it seems like there's a fundamental flaw because even with edge lighting off, no notification card pops down when I receive an email. May switch to gmail again, but I was also reading that people were having trouble with notification cards on that app as well.
I cannot post a URL to the facebook messenger lite app on apk mirror, but if you go to that site and search for the app, just download the most recent version: Version: 7.0.0.9.280 (57368212)
I've just across this thread after trying to get FB messenger to work, like others have already said the edge lighting is a bit random. I have the default messenger app working when screen is on or off, Whatsapp only when screen is on and FB messenger just not at all.
I used to use lightflow before to customise my notification light, didn't want to go down the router of installing it to fix something that should just work.
recently I find out that the calling screen of OTT applications which have calling feature such as facebook messenger, viber... will be overridden by edge lighting screen (only when screen is off) if you enable edge lighting for these apps, because of that facebook tell samsung to remove their messenger app out of list apps that support edge lighting
enable edge lighting when screen off for viber then use another phone to make a viber call to your S8, you will see what I am trying to say
Edge lighting seems useless. I mainly wanted to use it for Facebook Messenger and pretty much every app is in the list except that. I also enabled it for Gmail and Messages but have never actually seen it work.
Hello. I've got solution. This app translates old style notifications to new style notifications so all the apps have edge notifications enabled. You can customize color for any application and turn on/off edge notifications. Very good application, not like the others, which creates fakes color effects around display. It even works on AOD display, which is perfect. Ofc it has few bugs, like if you enable notification and scroll up than back, it shows like it didn't save your settings, but it did. Just set all your apps, turn off app and on and you can see, that it remembered all your settings. I've reported that bug, so I hope it get fixed. play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.movisoft.edgelighting&rdid=com.movisoft.edgelighting

I can get it to work on my text app, but not Facebook. How did you get it to work on Facebook? I heard that it won't work on Messenger.
