[Q] Unable to identify component top right on the front of phone. Please help. - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Thank you for reading this. It would be greatly be appreciated if someone could point out what part is on the top right of the front of the phone. This is not on the display screen, but is right above it. On the top left is the front facing camera. What about the top right? They appear to be two small circles, similar to lens, When viewing the mentioned two circles, the circle on the left has a more distinguishable small golden/brown circle or mark inside of the lens or right next to it. Hopefully this is not a defect.
Again, any help is much appreciated.

that's 2 sensors. one is for light for auto brightness. which i believe also triggers turning the screen off when you put the phone up to your ear(or maybe that's what the second sensor does)

Is the golden dot in left sensor normal? Or defect any ideas?

As to the golden dot on the "left sensor", is that normal, or is that a defect? It's more distinguishable then the sensor to the right.
Thanks again for your quick reply to my thread.

Hey there, I think everything is fine so first of all relax! You'll be alright guy. The sensors on the right side are for light and proximity (not sure which is which), the light sensor is for tuning the brightness of the screen dependent on your surroundings and the proximity sensor is for the phone to turn off the screen when it's by your ear so you don't press something with your cheek. Can't be 100% sure if theres a defect till you post a pic.
EDIT: The left sensor in the upper right is proximity so the right must be for light.

Sensor, or LED directly below camera lense. What is it?

I have asked this elsewhere but have yet to determine what this is. It's right underneath the camera lens. It looks like an LED but there is no "Flash" function in camera program. It also looks like a light sensor for the screen backlight. But it seems like an unusual location to place such a sensor. Being on the bottom, or back, it would only receive indirect light and at many times get unintentionally covered up by ones fingers while holding the handset with keyboard extended. I also thought it could have been a sensor for the camera. But it has no effect on cameraboperation (eg.. autofocus, white balance etc). Any ideas? Thanks
It's the mute button when the phone is placed face down.
You must have lost the button or something, since there is a pic of a mic on it, but if the button is gone, I could see how you would think it was a sensor of some sort.
That's just a piece of translucent plastic that goes over the real mute
lighted-switch w/c is in the phone body. The screen backlight sensor and proximity sensors are up front by the earpiece.
Thank you! I would never have figured.. or even guessed that. Once you said ''button'' , I went to push it ....sure enough lol. There is an image on it, but its too small to make out. Bummer, I was hoping for an LED thanks again.

I can make out the picture quite easily. You may want to consider glasses. I'm not poking fun really, I can see a traditional broadcast mic with a slash through it, suggesting it's mute capabilities.
I think he's looking at it with the cover off, in which case it does kinda look like a sensor of some kind.

[Q] Lumia 820 Proximity Sensor issues

Hello,
I recently replaced the front frame of my Lumia 820 due to dropping it. While the touch screen now works, I'm having issues with the proximity sensor in regards to calls, where it turns the screen black and doesn't come back on when taking my face away from the screen.
I took it all apart again, used compressed air to blow any dust away and made sure nothing was blocking the sensor.
Is there
a. any way to disable the proximity sensor?
b. does it anything to do with the Amber update? (works fine prior to this)
c. is there a way to go back to an older version of the firmware?
Thanks in advance!
Hi,
I have same problem. Anyone find solution to that? Probably proximity sensor need to be calibrated, but I didnt find any site with software and information how to do it.
Brg,
Pawel
I have the same issue
I'm having the same problem. I replaced the touch screen and the frame.
Alon.
Same issue
I am experiencing the same fault as what you guys are describing. I've even ordered from other sources to see if it was a faulty batch of screens, but still blank in call. Is there something in the fitting process that is going wrong? Any update or Fix would be great!

My friend had the exact same issue after replacing the screen. He finally took it to his local Nokia Care centre, they noticed straight away that the replacement screen wasn't a genuine Nokia part, fitted a Nokia one & he's never had a problem since.
simply make a call and try pressing the left side of the earpiece

just make a call and when the display goes black, simply press the left side of the earpiece, then you can see the display. its the problem with the new touchpanel. tigtly fix the touchpad to the panel and you can get it working. not a big issue. i too faced the issue and noticed the solution accidently. hopes it ill be usefull to you guys

Hi. I have been tightening keepeng pressing on top left... Simply took it off digitizer have cleaned to clear proximity glass on digitizer. Cutted very small peace of business card and glued it in between sensors gap on actual sensor and assembled back. Works fine

Hey man, I'm having problems with the same issue but can't seem to work out what you mean with gluing the business card in between the sensor gap? Also in my case I have to push quite hard on both sides before the proximity sensor works, even after tightening it all the way.
Hey. Disassemble your phone. On digitiser a designated hole for proximity sensor. I have cleaned that tint place and made it clear. Now look on proximity sensor. Its rectangular shape and has 2 lenses on it. In between , a very tiny space. In my case i took business card, as it thick, then i have cut very small piece of business card and glued it in that place. Give me you email, so i send you a picture

most of china digitizers work ok but many of them have got extra not cutted plastic in upper left corner (see picture)
this extra plastic makes bigger space between digitizer and frame that's why proximity sensor "think" it's covered.
There is no hope to make it work without cutting such plastic. Unfortunately this cut must be exactly "in line" with line from digitizer operation lines so it's almost impossible to make. China manufacture must make new type of digitizer with thinner digitizer lines and always cut such extra plastic. Then digitizer will be exactly flat on frame and proximity sensor will be close to his hole in digitizer and will work 100%.
Proximity sensor solution: request for clarification...

Hi,
How did you remove the color coating to the lens? And do you think that made a difference? Or was it the extra pressure the tiny strip of card put on the sensor?
Thanks,

Rear camera off-center

Probably a silly question. But I want to know whether the lens's position cause any effect on OIS when it's being completely off-centered as signified by the red circle in the image attached.
Thanks
I don't think it is a problem. If there is no black edges on screen when taking pictures, everything is fine.
And to see if OIS is turning on, just shake your phone (with camera off) and you can hear camera moving . Go to the camera app and shake again, you will not hear the camera moving. It means OIS is on.

I didn't mean whether the OIS will work or not, what I meant was whether the off-center will have any effect on OIS's working resulting in a bit more shaky video relatively?
Turn your phone around and it's centered.

I don't think so. I say this based upon my examination of the eight S7's I've possessed so far. Turning any one of them upside down appeared to merely cause an optical illusion. The illusion was that, if the back camera lens seemed off-center when right side up, flipping the device 180 degrees simply made it appear that the relative lens position had changed, often then seeming more centered.
If you look carefully at your S7's back lens (a magnifier helps), you can easily see that the lens itself is considerably recessed beneath the surface. That is, it is set back below the protective surface glass and the surrounding circular port opening. This means that when you look at the lens straight on, a crescent shadow is cast around a portion of the lens. And that makes it only appear to become more centered or more off-centered. The crescent shadow will change position depending upon the direction of your back lighting. You can hold your S7 facing its back panel, look at the lens, and pivot around in a circle to change the direction of the back lighting. You should notice the illusion of the lens moving from one side to the other as the back lighting becomes oblique from the opposite direction. A similar thing will occur when you turn the phone upside down.
Out of the eight S7's I've possessed, only one of them had a near perfectly centered back camera lens. As long as no portion of the lens is overlapped by the circular port opening, there should be no performance loss with the camera function. As stated, an off-centered back camera lens is actually only the position of the internally mounted camera module as relative to the external circular port opening. And the movement illusion is the shadow crescent moving around. The OIS movement should be so minimal that it will be undetectable in terms of how centered the lens appears to be.

Hi there.
I just got my S7 Edge today which seems to have the same misaligned camera and circular cover.
Did you notice any effect this has?

Small light bleed on midnight black s8

I never even noticed this before but I read a thread about it and than I looked at my phone and there is a barely visible light bleed above the light sensor like if it's just light barely peeking thru the glass it's not on the display. It's where the top bezel above the front camera meets the frame. Is this something I should b concerned about. It's only noticeable in the dark. Is it it defected or is it normal.

I have it too with my s8+, there is a little dot on the left side of the device where the plastic connects with the screen.
It's a production variance - you could argue it shouldn't be like that, but you'll never get a perfect phone due to variances in the tolerances during manufacturing... Mine has it too along the side (as did my silver S7 Edge before it).

Depends on if its just light from mossing paint or an air gap.
The front glass is glass so its see through, and then there is a black flim/coating put on it. Then it is glue to the frame of the phone.
So if a piece of the black coating got messed up then your get light showing.
Now if its not glue down all the way and there is a gap then the water proof is gone.
There was a guy on xda that got his coarl blue s7e and one corner was missing some of the blue coating.
I have this light bleed over the iris scanner and the front camera. Then I searched where it comes from. I saw if I had a white screen (for example settings) and a high brightness a big light bleed in the front camera if you look from the top of the phone to the bottom of the camera. There I see light from the screen. It's not a problem for me, but have you guys this too? The question about water resistant is interesting in this case.
hope it's jus paint that is missing. That's fine with me. If it's not glued down right I'm gonna have to go exchange it. I'm gonna have to check it out more and see what it is.
I'm seeing something similar with my unit...but I think this is more of a light reflection off the interior of the case because of the space/void created by the two sensors in that area. I say that because the reflection occurs directly about the sensors and it moves around a bit as you change viewing angle. Am I crazy?
It is a reflection that gets passed on to the IR LED. Not a sensor.
Harmless, and seems to be on all units I looked at.

How bad is your bleed? I JUST noticed today that mine has bleeding on the right edge? But it seems to go all the way down the side? Mostly visible when there is something bright on the screen? There is also a little on the bottom left side of the screen..
So, can we say that the light bleed above the front camera is normal then? I have it too.

brightness sensor

Hello !
I believe I understood that there was a "three dimensional" sensor on this phone,
Above the flash I saw a sensor, but for the front face I think there is nothing
In use, I often have the screen that gets too dark, because my hand must hide this sensor, or the rear face directed towards the ground and therefore less light towards this face
Also, if I use my phone flat on a table or desk, it goes to a minimum, which is very disturbing since I like using my device a lot. ?
With the sun, we can see under the panel the fingerprint sensor in the middle of the screen, a small rectangle not very straight, moreover, but also a small circle at the top, where I imagine it Is there a light sensor, am I wrong or someone has some info to confirm this ?
Thanks and good day !
