Volume buttons does enable silent mode. It's just one "up volume" click away from vibration. So it goes Vibrate -> silence -> volume 1 -> 2 -> etc.
If that doesn't work for you, long press your power button so the power off screen appears. Right under turn off there are 3 icons, for silent, vibrate, and sound. Click one of them and voila.

i think you mean one "down volume" from vibration? at least on mine it goes silent, vibrate, then ring. if you hold down volume down, it will go straight to vibrate. push volume down again once on vibrate, and it will go into silent mode.

I made a small workaround that is very handy!
I used Nova Activities widget to create a shortcut to the Sounds and Notificaitions --> Interruptions activity.
Whenever I want to sleep, I simply tap the widget on my homescreen, turn off Calls as priority notifications and go to sleep with peace of mind.
As soon as I wake up, I simply enable Calls as priority interruptions again by using the Nova widget
I know this is a workaround but this is the best way I found so far to solve this irritating problem on Android Lollipop.
I would also love to hear about any workarounds that anyone else on XDA has hacked together! Probably whip out a dialog UI using Tasker?
Hit thanks if my post helped you :good:

App to silent all sounds?

Is there any app for the xoom that will turn off all sounds for things like meetings? On the phones, there is one where all you do is press the power button and then choose silent sounds. Thanks!
Tasker , you have to do a step by step config , or try silent mode timer .
use the volume key to bring up the volume on the screen then click on the speaker, mutes everythng.
Lordao
OP: Use what he said in the post above. It's built into the system, and literally takes half a second to do. That's what it's there for, right?
volume plus(+) app. it has two widgets, one is a profile shuffler. three profiles so either one or two clicks on your homescreen.
probably beats having to bring up settings or pressing the a bit hard to press volume keys.

This works well for the alarms and ringers, but certain apps *ALWAYS* ignore this setting and use full volume anyways.
Personally, I like and use Quick Settings. It works very well and lets you change settings quickly. You can quickly choose between silent, vibrate, sound only, or sound and vibrate with it.
I use AudioManager. You can set up widgets for whatever sounds you want/dont want.
i.e. I have 4. One for only Media sounds. One for only Systems sounds. One for all to be up, and one for all to be off. You create the widget and press it once and then profile will be applied. You can set each setting to a specific volume. For example, if you want to watch movies at a certain volume, create the widget, during the creation, choose the sound volume and save it. Same can be done for music. You can create a widget to have some sounds on, and some off. Its totally customizable and i highly recommend it.
They have a pro version as well.

I forgot there were physical volume keys. Thanks for the pointer except it only handles 2 of the 3 things that has sound to it. If you went to settings and then sound, you will notice that the third one with the clock is not set from the volume keys. The 2nd one is when you click on the 3 sliders icon on the right side after clicking on the volume button.
With phones, I use Silent Mode Jammer which basically turns off all sounds when pressing the power button but on the Xoom, even with Silent Mode Jammer enabled, pressing the power button only allows shutdown of the device.
Xoom doesn't vibrate are you using this for silence?

I installed Volume+, the paid version and I don't see the widgets when I tried to add widgets to the home screen, what is it called? Is Volume+ the app with the volume knob for it's icon?

Never thought about it lacking vibrate. LOL. Haven't found anything to silence it other than using the settings and the 3 sliders manually.

mute mode with Android 5.0

Hello,
I just passed to Android 5.0 yesterday and no way to go to mute mode.
Before, when I press down volume, after i had vibrator mode and one press down again and mute mode.
Now, if I'm on vibrator mode and press down volume, no mute anymore .
Thanks.
It's a known issue, (or maybe bug)?
It seems the only way to get into mute mode is by turning volume down to vibrate, then tap volume up one time and... Reboot. After reboot you're in mute mode.

Mute is required!!!
Just press volume up/down and tap "PRIORITY". By default it will be the same as "mute" mode.
In 5.0 the "mute" just became customizable

Except you'll still get notifications in "priority" mode and make noise. I had everything unchecked and some Facebook notification came thru when I was sleeping the other night. If there is some way to disable all notifications (but keeping the alarm) short of killing the internet connection I don't know.
This sucks in Android L. Hope some skilled dev can do something about it.
Or maybe Google will fix it if enough ppl complains: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=79445

Tap a volume button and click "NONE". That will turn off ALL notifications, either indefinitely, or for the period you specify (defaults to 1 hour, but you can increase it by tapping)
[Edit] Oh wait, I just saw that you said "but keeping the alarm". Oh well...
No way there is no soulution for this problem dudez!

Silent Vibration mode as on iPhone

Hey folks, I've switched from an iPhone 6s to the Pixel. Zero regrets about that decision but I'm really missing on feature. The Silent/Vibration Mode you can activate with the switch on the side. Unfortunately the do not disturb mode kills all vibrations, when you're getting called f.e., but I would still like to get notified when getting called but just the vibration not the sound. Do you have any ideas, because I haven't found anything in the settings. Thanks in advance :highfive:
My phone never makes a sound, I just have it on vibrate only.
Use your volume switch and slide the "Ring" slider all the way to the left. If you hit volume down from there, it can go into do not disturb mode. Volume up again will put it back and vibrating only.
Also, if you go to Settings > Sound make sure that 'Also vibrate for calls' is turned on.

Silent mode

When pressing the button down, it doesn't go to mute(silent) only have 2 options, vibrate and volume.. Everyone phone I've ever had had mute when pressing the button all the way down. Am I missing a setting somewhere?
i'm searching for the same thing... my note 4 i could hold the vol down button and it would go past vibrate and into silent/mute...
i have noticed that you can pull the drop down top and tap on the volume setting and tap thru sound, vibrate, and into silent/mute... still not the same thing tho
That's how I have been putting my phone on silent at night... Much easier Imo to just hold the volume down button. Still can't find anything unfortunately

Un-desirable ring tone

Hi,
When you switch on the phone , you have a ringtone I would like to disable, is this possible ?
I didn't manage to find anything in the parameters.
Thanks
There isn't an option like Motorola or other OEM, but if you turn off your phone in "silent mode", when you turn it on again there will be no sound.

OK , I just tried..... and it works.
I wish I had a sound symbol to press on and off like wifi, torch light etc.... may be with an update later on who knows.
Anyway thanks a lot for the tip, I appreciate very much.
When you press a button of the volume rocker appears on the screen the slider to adjust the volume, right? If you press on the ring bell next to the slider the device goes in "silent mode" without changing the volume and in place of the ring bell appears the vibration symbol. If you press on the vibration symbol, the ring bell appears again and the volume returns to your favorite setting. It is a quick setting that allows you to switch between ringtone and silent mode without changing the volume, but placed in the quick volume menu, rather than in the general quick settings.
As an alternative you have the DND (Do Not Disturb) mode that has its toggle in the quick settings.
Yes this noise annoys me too but I rarely turn my phone off unless there is a reboot due to updates.
