[Q] Apps that use the low power sensor batching feature? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So far, the only app I've found that takes advantage of the hardware sensor batching feature of 4.4 seems to be Moves. Are there any others?
I'd really like something like AutomateIt being able to monitor sensors without taking a bit battery hit. On my HTC One, the sensor monitoring feature really sucked down the juice.

[Q] Difference - Gyro Sensor & G-Sensor

Hi,
Is there any difference between G-Sensor and Gyro Sensor?
HTC Sensation specifications states both sensors
Sensors
Gyro sensor
G-Sensor
Digital compass
Proximity sensor
Ambient light sensor
There is, but it's kinda subtle.
A G-sensor (accelerometer) can measure the change in acceleration of the device towards a direction. If you move the handset with a constant speed (no acceleration) then it shouldn't pick any signal. However, when moving their hand people change the speed slightly so an accelerometer picks that, but it will look sluggish.
A gyroscope can measure orientation, rotation and speed, so it can complement data collected from the accelerometer to smoothen out the reading of movement a great deal.
It's not the most important thing ever, but it's definitely a plus. Apps that use gyroscopes (mostly games and augmented reality apps) behave way more smoothly with it.
To put it more simply: The G-sensor measures the movement of the device. (By measuring acceleration). The gyro measures the tilt. They can work together to get more precise measurments of both.
Thanks for the explanations Guys...

[Q] What's the use of GYRO when we have Accelerometer and Compass?

My phone already has ACCELEROMETER and COMPASS. Why would I need GYROSCOPE? Can somebody give me example of practical applications that use Gyro sensor that the other two cant handle?
thanx
good question. Gyro is an extension to the accelerometer. It help you move with the devise in the same time. I see it being used on google street view (when u turn left/right the map is turning too) and in some shooting games.
Turn left right? Isnt that covered by the compass?
Bump!
Plus about the Atrix 4G...
Accelerometer, still no games utilises 6dof, if there is, not practical (like walking while holding the phone)
I guess the gyroscope mainly assists the GPS info + Compass...
Take it as like this:
Gyroscope assists Compass in rotation speed ( so u get real time)
Gyroscope assists accelerometer in pre-calibration proccess... (+ shaking games)
So I still argue with games like Asphalt 6 not working with accelerometers...
Both Gyroscope and Accelerometer are Fused, or Fusion proccess (combing the raw data map) so it will be enough real time...
Though 6DOF experience using a gyro is too useless for its accuracy... It comes hand when you buy a 400+ bux gyroscope Like headtracking systems...

[APP] Power Switch - the virtual SmartCover for any Android device!

Another Awesome Tool From Fahrbot
Power Switch is a tool for devices with cases - somewhat like the SmartCover, it will turn off the screen when you shut the case. If you have a device with poor battery life, Power Switch can save tons of juice by switching it off entirely after a given amount of time asleep.
The app works best on phones using the proximity sensor. On tablets, the light sensor is the most efficient method of knowing that the case has been closed.
Features:
- Sleep seconds after shutting case
- Automatic shutdown (rooted devices only)
- Set up a schedule using Night Mode
- Configure sensor sensitivity
- Facedown to turn screen off
- Persistent notification
- Plays sound to let you know that the screen has turned off
The app has gone through an extensive testing process here at XDA under another name. Thanks to everyone who helped make it happen, you're the best!
However, this testing showed that some features of that app were not all that useful, and some were conspicuously absent. To save both you and us a lot of grief, we made the second-generation Killswitch.
Remember to adjust the light sensor sensitivity settings in a light environment for best performance, and use Night Mode if you are on a tablet with a poor ambient light sensor.
If you have any comments or suggestions, please use this thread or the in-app feedback tool. Please be aware that we ignore logs without descriptions.
Power Switch Lite

The Lite version of the app is exactly the same as the Pro, only the timers are restricted to a minimum of twelve seconds.

Reserved for tech stuff.
Oh WOW! Ill give this a try
Let me know how it goes...
I have tried this on Galaxy note, it works fine when i test it with finger, but galaxy Note have cover, if i close with it, it doesn't work. I have marked also if there is white paper i keep over cover(black) it works. Does this bug? or sensor have problem to use dark color? itz really weired but true.
If you have a Note, you should be using the PROXIMITY SENSOR, which works regardless of color or density.
Thats the great thing abount my new Tab 7.7 - its the first real tablet with a proximity sensor! Works like magic
I have used proximity sensor. I have uninstalled it, anyway reinstalling n will put review again
Edit :
Set as tablet,
Used proximity + light then worked
Not worked with proximity only.( that i did y'day)
Thnx, had nice talk after long time, when u have launched root call blocker, participated lot on that thread, still using it on note too.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Does running the proximity sensor all the time when the screen is on reduce battery life?
edit: Just tested it on my Note, it works with Proximity only. It'd be great if it could turn the screen on as well when i flip open the cover, without affecting battery life too much!

Indeed dr.k good to see you back in action!
As for battery life, no, the sensor is on all the time anyway.
This is working with my black, light absorbant cover, where others have not. I now have my screen timeout up to 2 mins. Kudos!
I am also having to use both light and proximity in tablet mode.

Please try using just proximity, then try both, then send some logs through "Write to us". Be sure to leave a description like "light and proximity works" or something so we know what to look for.
1.1.4
Added option to disable in landscape
Fixed issue with switching Night mode
Fixed many device specific bugs (Tab 7.7, 8.9, 10.1)
seems to be only working with the light sensor on my galaxy tab 7.7.
how do i calibrate the proximity sensitivity?
Using the sensor sensitivity...
set it to 50. still not working :-(

Hi. Im the dev and i have the 7.7. I also know that there are two roms only atm and it works fine for me at 50% just by putting my hand 3 inches away from the sensor.
Maybe your setting something wrong?
Anything to report?
Guys have a look at our new app META WIDGET:

Anything to report?
Hmm, seems to work really well with my Transformer Prime, light sensor at 10% with a "Mini Suit" case.
Will buy the full version if this works reliably for the next few days.
Does the full version support "silent sleep" without a dialogue box if timers are set to 0 sec?

How to Keep screen off if proximity sensor = covered?

Hello all,
This has been an issue since my first sony. Gravity Box - an xposed module had a handy option in which at every screen wake, it was checking the proximity sensor to see if there is something near or not - it helped avoiding accidental dials and touches while in pocket.
I tried third party apps but the functionality is problematic. I also tried automations such as MacroDroid which held wakelock on proximity sensor - thus battery drain and cpu usage.
Samsung has an option within settings that does just that.
My question is, is there an adb command or a tasker automation (or even app) that brings this functionality back?
Looking fwd for your input. I am not rooted (for now) so the options are limited. Still I hope you guys have some bright ideas on the matter.
Cheers,

Remapping The Heart Rate Sensor

Back story:
Recently I bought these dirt cheap VR goggles, they suck, but for the time being it's all I have.
I've noticed that having a touch control over the phone was prety usefull, pausing a video, recentering, selecting, etc.
My goggles are basically wide open from the back, meaning the camera, jack, nfc (probably), usb and the Heartrate sensor are not blocked.
That in mind, I remembered that feature where you can take selfies with the Heartrate sensor and tought to myself "Heck this outta be easy!"
Let's start,
I need to use the heartrate proximity sensor to create a touch action in the middle of my screen
I first headed to the "Automate" app as it is quite flexible and simple (yet anoying) to use. To my avail, the sensor was not listed.
Tasker it was then!
Turns out tasker has a %HEART value but I am uncertain if it's even remotly close to what I need. (tasker.joaoapps. com/userguide/en/variables.html)
also one of my problems is, I don't even know how to activate the sensor in the first place.
I don't know anything about developping on mobile but,
Here's what I know:
-Samsung offers the Sensor Extension for developpers, but you need to register to ask for the dev kit via Email and apparently they don't respond to them very often. (developer.samsung. com/galaxy/sensor-extension)
-You can activate and monitor the sensors using the Samsung test menu
By entering *#0*# in the phone/call keypad and going to Sensor.
-Technically, for my purpose I would only want the proximity sensor of the Heart rate sensor but I believe they come in a package.
-I could attempt using NFC or bluetooth, but I guess I prefer to not cary something in my hand.
-I am sort of noob/alright when it comes to programming C++ so I can atleast understand code.
I'm asking for someone to shed some light if this was done before, I might be missing some obvious answer or other 3rd party app
I don't want to ask alot to be honest.
I guess other solutions will be much easier anyway, I just like to break my head thinking about other ways to do things.
Thx.
