App to block notifications during certain hours but allow contact exceptions - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The only thing I miss from my note 2 on my Nexus 5 is the highly convoluted Tasker task that I wrote that automates the turning on of Samsung's blocking mode in conjunction with me setting a Gentle Alarm alarm time and canceling blocking mode when I turn off the alarm in the morning. Is there any app that works on the Nexus 5 that lets me at least block notifications to the phone during certain hours but allows me to make exceptions for certain contacts, like if there was a family emergency. I'm not even worried about about Tasker integration at this point.

I use Nights Keeper

app to mute notifications between certain hrs?

Sorry if this has already been asked but is there a way to disable or mute notifications between certain times? Or at least email? This way the phone doesnt go off when I am asleep.
I use Sound Manager. Gives you the option to set the volume levels for media, system, notifications, etc and to set schedules for any of these. I use it to set my notification volume down low after 2:00am and to come back up to high volume around 8:00am and so far has worked just fine.
Tasker works great for this
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Tasker probably can do that but its a ready complicated learning curve imo
Tasker rocks..definitely worth it...
I have the same thing..here is how to set it up in Tasker...
From 23:00 Til 07:00
Silent Mode On
That's it...
I also have it setup for an exception that if one of two people call me from work then it overrides and rings...
I have done a ton of stuff with Tasker -- like turning phone to vibrate during meetings, turning on gps automatically when I run certain programs (and then turn it off again when I close them), Play a sound when the plug becomes disconnected while charging, change the screen turnoff time when phone is charging, etc..
If you can't tell I love it.
Another plug for Tasker. It is awesome. The MacGyver part of my signature is brought to you in part by Tasker. And the letter A, for Awesome.
If Tasker seems hard to get into, check out their site for info: http://tasker.dinglisch.net/
A really nice use I have for it is automatically adjusting my screen brightness when plugged/unplugged.

Tasker does have a bit of a learning curve and if it's just simply turning off notifications, there are probably simpler solutions. But I love Tasker to bits. I have it set so between my usual bedtime hours, the phone goes silent, Screen Filter activates and dims it way down and Orientation turns off so I can lay down and read without it turning into landscape. I seem to always be finding new things to add and tinker.
Also recently added a function where the screen timeout goes away when Maps is activated. Got tired of losing the lock because it takes so darn long to get it back!
I use Volume Toggle - it is free (ad supported) and it has a bunch of different profiles you can customize.
It has a companion program "Volume Timer" (also free) that lets you set days and times for each profile.
I used to use Sound Manager but it decided to stop working, even after re-installing it still decided to quit after using it awhile.
I now use AudioGuru, it works great for scheduling volume settings for anything on your phone (System, Alarm, Ringer, Notifications, etc). Very easy to use and hasn't failed me yet. Recommended.
I use Silent Time Lite. It is free from the App Store and is very simple to use.
Sweet Dreams is available on the market and works great. Easy to use.
Thanks all, Tasker looks like it rocks. I will get it loaded. I like the "if bluetooth connected then read outloud the text messages", this way whenever I am in my car, it will read the tm! thats sweet.

Post your Tasker profiles

Tasker has made my antiquated Touch Pro2 feel like a whole new device, but I've been having trouble thinking of cool stuff to do with it on my infinity. So far, it just auto-triggers wifi when I enter relevant apps, and if I used gps much, I'd trigger that similarly. It's a small time and battery saver, but it isn't like it was that hard to manage wifi before.
Anyone create any cool profiles to make the infinity better?
I've got my first kinda cool tablet profile, care of pocketables. It requires autoremote. Just finished it last night and it works like a charm.
It allows me to set 4 (or as many as I want) alarms across both my phone and infinity by entering a single time. I've added a hook with tesla led and tasker that causes my tablet's flash to come on, and I set it open by my bedside so the light is pointed at me.
I've always set multiple alarms, and it's a ton quicker now. That link has an image that lays out the handheld's side of the recipe. On the tablet side, you have to accept the passover from autoremote (your handheld-side autoremote message should be alarm =:= %Alarm), use the same variable split and base 60 checker from the handheld side and set alarm. To get the lighting, I just set up a new profile to kick on the led when the system alarm goes off.
One weakness as is is that every alarm it sets on one device is the same. Set Alarm doesn't let you customize tons of features that most alarm apps have, it just forces you to use the default set up each time. I'm planning to replace one of them with a prealarm, a softer quieter alarm not designed to get me up, just to stir me a little before the others go off. It'll have to be based in tasker though, not in the traditional alarm area due to set alarm's limits.

[APP][2.2+] Call Filter Alarm - Choose who can wake you!

Call Filter Alarm - Choose who can wake you!
Do you use your smartphone as alarm? Do you want only certain people to contact you while sleeping?
If you simply leave your smartphone turned on, you risk that anybody can wake you up, or... you use Call Filter Alarm!
Using this innovative app, you can define all the alarms you need with the possibility to specify, for every single alarm, who can call you, shutting up all other calls / sms notifications and intelligently manage wifi activation / deactivation, data usage, offline mode.
How it works:
- Define the alarm
- Choose who can call you (if needed)
- Before going to sleep, enable sleep mode
Your phone will ring only for who you decided. Other calls / sms will happen in silent mode and you will be able to see them as lost when you will wake up.
I think it may be useful for who, for example, works the night shift or is often away from home and wants to be able to receive, while sleeping, only calls from his dear ones.
In addition to the particular call and sms filters feature, using Call Filter Alarm you can:
- Intelligently manage wifi activation / deactivation, data usage, offline mode, silent mode with a single button: the sleep mode
- Personalize sleep mode as you want
- Set tone, volume and vibration for allowed call and allowed sms
- Set volume, volume increment, snooze, tone (music or ringtone), vibration for every single alarm in addition to application level
- Daily alarm repetition
- Incremental alarm volume
- Multilanguage (English and Italian now available)
It's simple, immediate and extremely effective.
Call Filter Alarm is available in english and italian, has been downloaded 4400+ times and its current average rating is 4.7/5 (92 ratings)

can u make an automatic option like
enable automatic sleep mode from set hour to set hour (or wake up time)?
...bc there are times a sleep before to remember to activate the sleep option !
Finally someone has made an app for this!
I've been using tasker for this function, but I can't get that to function 100% perfectly.
I have some suggestions that would make the program perfect in my opinion:
- Tasker integration would be nice. Right now my 'sleep mode' is activated automatically when the phone is charging, if it's dark in the room and if it's after 10pm. It is deactivated when i press the 'stop alarm' button when my alarm goes off. It would be great if tasker could enable and disable your app's sleep mode as well.
- An option that when contacts on the white list call you during sleep mode, your phone does not ring, but your phone automatically sends a custom text saying something like: 'this person is now asleep and his phone is muted, you can wake him up in case of an emergency by texting the word 'alarm''.
When a whitelisted person sends you a text saying 'alarm', it triggers the alarm from the app. This way, a whitelisted person won't wake you up by accident.
Keep up the great work!
Pathbreaking, innovative and an awesome app!
Nice work bro, I too had been using tasker earlier, but you really made me overwhelmed by making this app,
P.S : Hope to see more greater app like this!
If I use an external app for my alarms (Sleep as Android) can I use this in conjunction with my other app?
This is awesome <3

I came to this thread to suggest a similar thing, but painy beat me to it.
It would really be awesome if one could preset an SMS being sent to the caller, with custom text.
My solution for emergencies would be for the app to allow the call to be heard if it reoccurs within some preset time. An option for an automated SMS like
"Your call has been silenced because... In case of emergency, call again within ... minutes and the call will be allowed to go through."
would be great.
Moreover, instead of whitelisting, being able to blacklist callers seems to make more sense, as people unknown to you are not likely to disturb you during sleep for trivial matters, in contrast to your closest ones.
Seems like a great app, although usage for some days will verify it's reliability. Keep up the good work!

Hi! Surely the automatic activation would be a useful thing and it would be much appreciated. The problem, however, is that the only source of "support" of Call Filter Alarm is advertising and not passing through the screen to activate the sleep mode, this source would be less.
I'm still considering the publication of a pro version (paid and ad free) which may contain, among other innovations of this type (eg widget), what you have requested.
Thanks for your suggestion!

not sure if sms back will be so great if some1 want to mess around call u like 100 times / night your phone will send back 100sms to him....and most off all i don' t wanna let ppl knows i sleep .
my suggestion it's if some1 who's not in your white list and he really want to talk with you he will try to call like 2-3 times repeatably only after second call, the call to pass thru and your phone should ring normally.
keep in mind it's just suggestions.
Btw, in some next future updates, can you modify and repolish the ui of it?
Use without alarm?
Is it possible to use this app without using the alarm? I have a standalone alarm clock I like to use, but would still like to use the features of this app. Thanks!

Are you referring to the holo theme (the app in general) or to a particular view? How do you think it could be better?

Now you can't. I'll think about it... You'd like to use the mixed tones of sleep as android instead of Call Filter Alarm's tones, right?
Nice App Thanks
App is pretty cool. But, was wondering, can you add a Do Not Disturb Mode, which is not connected to the alarm, and add a widget to turn it on and off.
I know there are many DND type programs, but few of them work correctly, if any. Yours does everything I need, except I don't need the alarm, so just being able to white list people to call me, would be great. Right now, I enabled an alarm that has no ringer or vibrate. When I want to DND, I have to open the app, enable the alarm, and the sleep mode. Now, that is not all that difficult or time consuming, and is definitely what I will do. But, if you can add a DND type function, and a widget, this would be ideal for me, and I think for many others.
Thanks

I don't like the fact that it's tied to an alarm. Maybe I'm in a meeting and I just want urgent calls to get through. I found another good program exactly for letting white listed calls through, the rest remain silent. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farproc.auto.ring

I think he just wants to use your app without an alarm, just for filtering calls, and sleep as android as default alarm.

Sync FitBit when YOU want to!!!

Hello happy Fitbit People!
So, a common problem people have is that they dont want to keep their fitbit on an all day sync schedule and drain the battery that much faster. I also wanted to automate the advantages of the Fitbit to do certain things based on a certain time.
You can do this NOW! You dont have to wait for Fitbit to hear your cries for an independent sync schedule.
You will need the following...
1. Phone (duh) - rooted helps (a lot) but not a complete deal breaker
2. Install and Load Macrodroid
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.arlosoft.macrodroid&hl=en_US
3. Configure Macrodroid as noted. I have attached an image of how I have mine set up......
4. Install IFTTT and send an alert when I have enough sleep logged.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ifttt.ifttt&hl=en_US
5. Profit!!!
Turn off 'all day sync' on your Fitbit app, but leave on 'always connected'.
I have it set to NOT sync until the screen turns off so I dont have the annoying Fitbit app pop up (and I HATE that Fitbit puts 'ads' in the app for whatever new device they have.. .I mean c'mon! I already have your device cuz I am using the app! Why are you pushing more ads on me!!!!)
So it back spaces twice to ensure no ads are left on the screen when I turn it back on.
Mine will sync every 2 hours or so... but only during my normal 'wake cycle'. It will also toggle the Bluetooth in case I had lost a connection during that time (like if I leave my phone home when I go to the gym). It will also note when I wake up in the morning and if it is during a weekday it will send a good morning text to all my friends that I keep in touch with. I have the voice notifications because it strangely wakes me up right before my alarm goes off and because I dig knowing it is working.... You don't have to use them.
I also use white noise apps on my devices when I sleep so this process kills all of them so that I will hear my alarm (and dont have to bother turning them all off)
I am getting 5 days or so battery life and keeping good connectivity with my Note 3 running a Nougat ROM.
**** I take no credit for the apps I am using, nor am I a developer.. I take no responsibility for any changes or loss of data or if you miss that phone call for a job interview!!! ****

LeTV Le1s - Problem with background alarm apps

I am a total noob, with no prior knowledge or experience with android developing or hacking, so when providing solutions, please try to avoid technical jargon.
Previously, all apps that provide notifications used to fail, like WhatsApp and GMail, because of the phone's in-built battery saving algorithms. However, I fixed that by accessing the secret menu (*#*#46360000*#*#) and disabling "Background Resource Control".
But there is still another problem that hasn't been fixed. I have an alarm app called "I Can't Wake Up". It's an additional app that I installed because it has features that the in-built alarm does not. However, the alarm does not ring unless I keep the app active. The moment I exit the app and end it's process, there's no way it will ring. That means I have to turn on the app before going to bed, and let the process run overnight before the alarm finally rings. I am sure this cannot be the norm.
I have already double-checked to see if "Do Not Disturb" mode was active, and it is not. I have also enabled auto-launch permissions. None of this has helped.
