So, even with auto brightness off the screen will dim, seems to be a power saving feature but it's so poorly implented.
Just writting this message the brightness went from 100% to dim to 100% again, is there any solution to keep the brightness at 100% all the time?
Do you mean after a certain amount of time? It could be the dim before it auto-turns off the screen. You could extend the time it takes before it dims and turns off screen by increasing the timeout in display settings.

No, what I'm talking about is that the screen will periodically get dimmer during use, as a power saving measure or because of overheating, I don't know.
You need to be at full brightness to begin with to notice the drop in brightness, it's not ultra obvious but it's definitely there. The device seems incapable of staying at full brightness for a prolonged time.

I found the captivate drain battery too fast, even at the lowest brightness the phone gives. So I am thinking about maybe we could further turn down the brightness of the screen, this might save a lot battery.

I noticed that from JF6 to JH7, the brightness went down one tick lower. When I had stock JF6 set to manual brightness, I used to not have a hard time reading the contents on the display while the phone is on my desk, set to the lowest setting. When I did the JH7 OTA update, I noticed that the lowest brightness setting (when set to manual) is even lower. It made it harder to read. Hope that answers your question on brightness settings. There is more on JH7 than just the brightness settings changes. Plus, there are other things you can do to save battery power than just adjusting the display brightness
When I go into Settings, About and battery use.
It show that the Display using about 60% of the power.
Everything is relative on that page. If all you do is turn on the screen and browse, the "Display" battery usage will be higher. If you're on the phone for an hour or so (which, by default, the display turns off) you'll see "Voice calls" number go up. Etc.

Basically it's saying, the time you've had your device unplugged, 60% of the battery usage has been due to the display. and 40% of it is among other things.
There's an app on the market called Dimmer that will knock the brightness down a bit from the lowest setting. There's a small window that pops up that says "changing brightness from XX to 10" where XX = 30 on the lowest setting via the default brightness settings.
This makes me suspect that the brightness could go even lower, though I don't if it would impact the performance of the screen, given the Super AMOLED tech.

This is normal..All this means is your display is using the most and you don't have any background programs eating the battery.It should always show this as the highest from what I've been told.
In settings you can can either use the automatic brightness setting..or not... it is in Sound and Display..scroll down to display settings and you will see Brightness...Screen Time Out...and Power Saving Mode . Click on Power Saving mode....if you see the green check mark there..you are unchecking it..then open the Brightness tab..click on automatic brightness adjustment if checked and do the same thing ..and then ok. Your screen will darken.. You can then install the power bar on one of your screens by touching a unpopulated area large enough to accept the power bar strip. You will then be able to adjust the brightness by tapping on it..as well as being able to turn on and off wi-fi..blue-tooth..satellite..sync..and lastly brightness.

Theres also an app called Screen Filter which does the same thing as you guys have been describing, except it has a slider you can use to set what you would like, I use it for reading in bed, and it works wonderfully.

I can't help if you are on stock software, but I figured I would throw down a tip for CM10, since thats what I run. There is an option to allow screen dimming. I believe by default, once a screen brightness increases on android the only way to lower it is by cycling the screen. The option in CM10 allows the OS to dim the screen w/o turning the screen off.

I have a cheap Chinese Cube T8Plus that I use exclusively to read comics and books at night.
It works really well for that use, but has 2 very annoying problems with backlight brightness that makes it less than ideal for low light use:
- with manual brightness, the minimum brightness is very high, and even with root and a software like brightness tweak, it stays the same (I can actually increase the minimum brightness, but not decrease it).
- with auto brightness, surprisingly on low light the screen gets a lot dimmer than with manual brightness, it makes a huge difference. But here too there is a big problem; the brightness does increase whenever I the tablet is exposed to higher light, but doesn't decrease back on low light, no matter what I do.
The only way to reset it back is to fully reboot the tablet.
I tried different roms to try fixing the issue, they all have the same behavior sadly.
Of course I know there are screen filter solutions like the twilight app, which I actually use, but it's not always enough, and kills the contrast a little bit too much sometimes.
So is there any other way to force the manual brightness to go lower, that might work for me?
If not can I override the auto brightness in some way?

I have searched near and far and don't see other results. Has anyone had problems with their automatic brightness? On mine, it fluctuates from dim to bright in static light conditions constantly. It makes the feature un-usable, have to set brightness manually.
Have tried turning peek display, attentive display etc on or off. No change.
Seems sensitive, yes. Mine always gets too dim, then, when I angle the phone so the screen is awash in light it brightens right up. Same room, same arm, same position, just tilted a bit. Thanks, I hate it. Defaults to dim instead of brighter - it should default to 65% and go from there.
Android auto brightness has always been a sloppy abortion.
Use manual control, it's far easier on the eyes and mind. You can easily limit brightness to 50% or less so you don't put unnecessary wear on the OLED display
I understand that the P7P is supposed to have a brighter screen then my retired P6P. Yesterday, I had my P7P in the car holder on a sunny day. Even at 100% brightness with adaptive brightness turned off the screen was hard to see.
Anyone else having a problem seeing the screen when outside?
Do you have adaptive brightness on or off?
In Exkm, I see a display option for High Brightness Mode (HBM) which I will try the next time.
I understand at high brightness that power consumption is also very high.
Any thoughts on seeing the screen when outside on a sunny day?

You have to turn it on, unless its max is only at 1000 nits, not 1500 like with Adaptive Brightness.
Turn the adaptive brightness on, you can get 1500nits brightness.
But it drains the battery really fast.

Just an FYI, you won't see 1,500 nits just by turning on the adaptive brightness on. Picture a screen with a white box in the middle and a black background.
Let's say that whitebox takes up 1% of the entire screen and black takes up 99%. The screen might boost that white box to 1500 nits (at maximum brightness slider). So it looks really bright.
Now let's say you expand that box and it takes up 20% of the screen and 80% is black. The screen is going to lower the brightness maybe down to 1000 nits.. even though the slider is still at 100%.
Then let's say you expand the box all the way, takes 100% of the screen, it's all white. The screen automatically lowers the brightness down to 800 nits, even though again the slider is at 100%.
The main apps that I want to see during the day while driving are Maps and Waze. Light mode seems better than Dark mode, but it was still hard to see the maps even at 100% brightness.
I use Velis Auto Brightness from PlayStore to care my screen brightness.

I would be absolutely shocked if Velis can engage "high brightness mode".
If you cannot engage "high brightness mode" by turning off auto-brightness and moving the slider bar all the way to the right, then Velis probably can't do it either.
"High brightness mode" is typically only available via stock Auto Brightness or via rooted options.
It only comes on under special circumstances and you cannot leave it at "high brightness mode" for as long as you want (without using root options).

That doesn't seem right, this screen is brighter than my pixel 6 pro at 100% and easier to read outside. HBM you mentioned doesn't seem to work with EXKM and HBM, or at least for me it doesn't, and have set all the permissions and given it root access. There is a difference but it is so tiny it might as well not be there, and my screen is 75% normal when testing.
