Slow Speeds when GPS is Switched Off - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't know if I have hardware fault or a software bug but have noticed when I run speed tests am getting slow speeds when GPS is switched off. When GPS is switched on am getting normal results from my provider. I don't know how to do screen prints so see links below. Is anyone else having this issue before I send the phone back to CPW.

Been getting in on both WiFi and Data and been happening since last friday I have reset the phone twice already!

Yes, it is slightly higher with GPS turned on high accuracy. Not a huge difference like yours.

Can someone test their connection speeds with GPS switched off/on as dunno if its a problem with just my handset or a bigger issue,

Thanks for testing. I didn't think GPS had anything to do with internet speeds so weird why its also improved on your handset. But least you ain't getting the slow speeds I am experiencing. Just tested it on my s2 which works fine am getting decent speeds so its not a problem with my Wifi or Three so must be the handset.:crying:

Resolved... Downloaded another speedtest application and givng similar results with both GPS on/off. Stay clear off speedtest.net application.

Seems to me that all this is going to do is have the placebo effect that the other "fixes" have had, and give you a coarse location, something my Eternity could do, and not really a fix for the GPS issue as it uses triangulation from cell towers to locate you.

No, one tower can't. However, 3 or 4 towers can, basically you bounce a signal to multiple towers, and the time it takes for a full loop to be finished by the signal between you and the tower can be used to calculate how far you are from that tower. If you know how far you are from three separate towers, you can get a decent lock on your position. That's what the "Use Wireless Networks" function in the Location menu does.
Anyway, I tried this fix, and it didn't change the fact that my GPS signal was spotty, constantly fluctuating the number of satellites seen, and often dropping all satellites, while taking just over 7 minutes to get a lock on me that had the piss poor accuracy of approximately 30 meters.

3 or 4 towers can not give you an exact location, the best I have seen was 200 meters with cell tower location.
All GPS systems fluctuate that's normal but dropping all is not unless your in a big city. for example, I have not found 1 GPS unit that works reliably in downtown Detroit and I have had 9 Nav systems in 2 years.
I turn on tower location and MS assist for faster pinpoints and indoor use .
So far out of over 300 views and 49 posts and emails only 6 people say it does not work for them everyone else says it works.

I would argue that cell tower triangulation can get you to a much closer accuracy than 200 meters. If my eternity hadn't taken a divot to the screen that prematurely ended it's life a month ago I'd take a video with my captivate to prove it. Sadly, you'll just have to take my word that my eternity often got my location right within about 100 feet, and while it would at times be kilometers off this was the exception and not the rule. I'm just saying that cell triangulation (or quadrangulation or pentangulation or however many towers you have) can be quite accurate, especially in urban areas where there a lot of towers to bounce signal off of. And 7 minutes to get a lock on my location within 30 meters is absurd, I don't think anyone would argue that.

I doubt it. Try drive around using Google Navigator and see if you get precise lock through out the time. I'd bet money it won't.
So far, all the fixes are only tackling the initial quick lock on. None can fix the precision errors of the Galaxy GPS.
Hmm actually Auto Config gave me super good accuracy(5 meters), slower lock time and really laggy while driving.

It works for about a day.
If you want to fix your GPS, you have to flash to the JH2 firmware. It contains the real fix for GPS. Whatever setting you play with the JF6 firmware won't make much of a difference after a few days. The driver in all the early firmwares are completely broken.

Granted there may be 2 completely separate problems, with that firmware update fixing one of them, but I'm sad to say that the JH2 firmware fix didnt make it past the 8 hour point for me. GPS refuses to lock without a reboot. I've been fiddling with the GPS configuration as well to see if the combination will be the answer, but so far no luck.
I can go ahead and say IMO its not a total fix with the new firmware, It's better, but my wifes my touch 3g slide blows this one out of the water when it comes to initial lock and tracking. I just flashed the new rom today and the gps isn't all that great now I'm scared about what my gps is gonna look like tomorrow!

works MUCH better with AutoConfig on for me also
and wireless turned off
usually get a lock in 10 seconds or less
occasionally takes longer..
I finally had luck today by going with the supl.google server and changing my accuracy to 100 and my mode to ms based. Locked and was great for a good 3 hours. Later on it took a while to get a lock, but would lose it quickly, then wouldn't lock at all again. I exchanged it for a new one tonight and the gps is working great....just like when I first got the other one >.>
My question is this: If I wait for the "fix" they are releasing and it takes me past my 30 days, what recourse do I have? GPS is a MUST for me, without it this phone to me is broken and I can't settle for it. Do you think I would have any chance of swapping it for another model like the aria?? I hate that gps is that big of a deal but it simply is for me. Love the screen, the power, the speed, all the potential....but come ON how hard is it to make gps work these days? I am very function over fashion. I need my phone to work, if it doesn't I will get a less flashy, more reliable device.

With AT&T - zero, zip, nada. I spent a lot of time on the phone and in the store with them trying to see what options I had in this situation. They were very clear with me that in the case that a real problem with GPS is found but never gets fixed, its Samsung's issue not theirs and that I must go through Samsung for a resolution. They did also say the stores do have the power to make exceptions and possibly allow you to exchange your device for something else, but there is no obligaton for them to help you out.

Wifi Issues

When I move into my room, my laptop gets 90%-100% signal strength from my Wifi, my phone however randomly looses signal completely and especially when I take up the phone to use it. It's very frustrating. Plus when I'm on 3G, it constantly switches from 3G to H too.
The 3g H switching is normal if you are on tmo us and running the eu roms and has been discussed quite a bit
not sure what you mean by losing signal, but i get diff bars diff places in my house. never lose the whole connection as in not being able to dl or browse web
did you run speed tests at these diff locations in house

I think you misunderstood his post. His primary problem is that the wifi on his phone doesn't come close to the signal strength his laptop has when in the same room.
The secondary problem was the 3g/4g switching.
OP -- I have no idea what to tell you.
no, i understood. just saying my phone wifi bars fluctuate even if my laptop has good signal. may just be the way they both display strength readings
i think op should run speed tests btw the two at same time. however both devices are splitting signal so may not be as good as only one running at a time
his speeds may be fine even though bars don't show it

I'm in Jamaica, no T-mobile. I'm not sure if I'm running an EU rom. My problem is that I loose connectivity to Wifi totally randomly in my room with even little motion. I mentioned my laptop for reference... it's like there's poor signal in my room. The phone'll just bit sitting on my bed, I hear an alert and pick up the phone to realize I've lost Wifi.
Speed is not the problem, I've been able to run a speed test to confirm I get the speed I'm supposed to get. Other times though, the speed test could not complete because I moved a little and lost connectivity.

Make sure that your SIM access cover is snapped in place.
It happened to me with the WiFi signal - The phone was losing signal, and had low signal 1 foot away from the router.
I 'pinched' the top-right corner of the access cover (thumb on the glass, index finger on the back cover) - I heard a 'click' and suddenly my WiFi was at full strength. I believe that the WiFi antenna is not connected unless it snaps together.
ok, not sure what to suggest. you could try turning airplane mode on and of and see if that helps
maybe router settings with the phone if you always had the issue
under settings/wifi/ tap on wifi then the 3 dot menu--Advanced. See if Keep Wi-Fi on during Sleep is Always. If not tap on it and change to Always
Also at bottom of Advanced menu is a DLNA setting, you could toggle that
barring that or someone else's ideas--maybe hardware and needs replaced
Try turning on Best Wifi Performance in Wifi, advanced settings.

Turning on best WiFi performance totally killed my battery life, but that may just be me.
If you're losing signal on one device but not another, I'd recommend changing the channel on your router. Interference on certain channels can cause weird issues with some devices. There are apps on the market that will show you which channels are congested in your area.

Hmmm... I'll try that. So far turning on DLNA and Best Performance hasn't made any difference. I'll try changing the channel when I get home later and post the results. I REALLY hope h/w is not the problem.. it's gonna be a hassle sending this back.
It might be worth gently cleaning the contacts exposed when you remove the SIM access panel. As District noted, good contact is necessary for wifi (and probably other features). Dust or a fingerprint may be problematic.
Anything to bear in mind when trying to clean it or adjust it? I'm really paranoid I'll mess it up.
make sure you use electrical cleaner
radio shack sells it, comes in spray can
if you haven't had sim card out or phone long, probably not issue. but, worth try
if you have another router, you can always try that
Nothing seems to work... I'm using channel 11 @ home which doesn't seem to be crowded. I have the same issue @ work with our router. I've been having this problem from I got the phone last week. This is after I initially removed the back cover to first insert my SIM.
I'm going to try and see if I can secure a cleaner... I tried blowing on it mean time. Also turned on DLNA and best wifi performance and all.
DLNA auto-IP setting worked for me.
Hi OP,
I had the exact same wifi issues on my One S. I tried the router at work, the router at home and my mates router with the same results.
Mine seems to work now, with no disconnections or manually connections. What seems to have worked for me -- Wifi - Advanced menu -- DLNA auto-IP setting - toggle on. Then restart, making sure the setting is still set after reboot. Seems to have fixed my wifi issues.
HTH.

Ingress and GPS lag/uncertainty

Has anyone experienced very bad Ingress performance while using this tablet?
On top of that, has anyone experienced incredibly bad GPS lag and/or position uncertainty? I've had times where it stops moving for a minute or more, even when I end up being a block or more away (in my small city, so no sky scrappers or any large buildings blocking the GPS signal either). It's getting to the point where Ingress is a lost hope for the tablet, which it wasn't when I was using my Nexus 7. It actually ran it much better than the TF700, surprisingly.
I've noticed the same problems in google maps and other various GPS programs as well.
Help?
No, I haven't noticed GPS issues. In fact I use my tab to navigate across Europe. Never had an issue. (other than the usual 'below ground or not enough satellites in range')
Then again I haven't tried Ingress. And I disabled Google Maps on day 1. It eats battery even when asleep! Also, that thing won't even work properly on a PC these days, my SGS3 can't find my position at all (let alone load the map itself) and frankly there are much better navigation apps available. (I highly reccomend NavFree.)
Are you sure it's not just a lack of signal strength?

It could very well be a lack of signal strength, but how would I even begin to know that? There's not really an indication in any application what the signal strength is for the GPS.

I am having trouble with the GPS in the TF700. This morning it spent the whole time I was driving around (even tried tethering it to the iPhone) searching for a route.
It seems to me that it was sharper before this latest CleanRom update (CROMI-X 4.6.4 - 10.6.1.15.3/US DEODEXED).
Anyone have some insight? #GPS

Why the hashtag? This isn't Twitter.
It has recently been taking ever longer to find my location. Used to be it could do it in about a minute, now it takes almost 30. I didn't change a thing on my system, not even an update.
There has been an increase in solar activity and geomagnetic interference over the last few months.
Phones and 3G enabled tablets do not have this issue, because the Internet signal is already tracking your position, making it easier to triangulate. (Try turning off 3G on your phone, it'll take equally long.)
Thanks - Understood

HASHTAG from copy G+
Thanks for help.
Honestly, I gave up on it.
MY TF700 isn't really good for Ingress anyway. There's way too much lag involved, and for whatever reason every now and then the GPS just seems to stop functioning. I don't really know why, it just stops at one location for about 2 or 3 minutes. I won't even bother getting into how inaccurate it is.
And just to note, this was before the increase in solar activity.....the solar activity just makes it even worse now.

[Q] Issues/Questions

Overall I am loving this phone. I have never had an Android phone this fast. I can't find a hint of lag on this thing.
I am, sadly, having a couple of other issues and want to get other peoples thoughts on things before I do anything "Drastic".
1) I heard somewhere they boosted the sound by 25%? If I have mine at full... I am hearing static and popping... like it is too much for the speakers. This is when I get a text/ringtone, or when I am playing a game (Robot Unicorn Attack for instance... don't judge).
2) Wifi.... I am getting weird "lag" when I am on wifi. Websites take longer to connect to and load... same with apps and the Playstore. Speed test I am only able to pull down 15MB/s. Low ping... but it takes forever (6-10 seconds) to connect to start the test. Have tried three different routers, same results (Netgear,an E3200, and a D-Link). Everything looks normal under settings. Full strength (in the room of the router... gets worse when I am downstairs). I unchecked the Wifi Optimization. Also it is doing this on 5 and 2.4 GHz.
3) GPS Lag - It seems to be taking longer than normal. I am going on a trip this weekend, and I will really get to test this then... but wanted to know if this is normal for an HTC device now a days (last one I owned was the Thunderbolt.... shivers, and GPS was always wonky).
Any help appreciated. Thanks!
1 - In my experience so far, the speakers are definitely louder, but I haven't found any distortion besides audio files that I artificially increased the volume on for previous devices.
2 - I haven't seen any WiFi lag yet. But I'm on vacation currently and the internet here is only 12mbps, instead of my 65mbps at home.
3 - The Engadget review noted some wonky GPS issues.

If you could... when loading up a web page or something... see if it is taking longer than normal to connect to a web page initially. Mine is acting like there is no internet... then all the sudden it loads up fine.
I am also noticing MMS is taking longer than normal to send (I had an S4 before this and it didnt take half as long... maybe it was compressing it more?)
I have just had radio issues in the past with HTC devices and want to nip them before it is too late.

Sadly I am still having this issue. Now that the phone has been out a week, anyone noticed anything?
I am not having issues connecting to the Wifi, I am just having issues connecting to the internet once connected to the Wifi. I have now tried this on 5 different home routers and several public Wifi areas and all the same results: going to a webpage has a delay anywhere up to 15 seconds before the page starts to load, and apps have issues connecting as well (Instagram will tell me unable to refresh, and Facebook will tell me I have no network connection). I have tried everything: Renamed the Device to HTC One, tried switching to 2.4 and 5 Ghz band, Unchecked WiFi Optimization... nothing is fixing this "lag".
Speaker issues - Still hearing a popping and crackling of the speakers, and I am seeing others are having the issue as well.
GPS - Went on my trip, I think I was getting the typical "Chicago GPS" lag before, as I would normally get a lock on with my GPS in 3 seconds or less while out in the middle of no where this past weekend.
I personally do not want to go through 15 phones trying to find one that has working WiFi, as it seems the One series has been having issues with WiFi since 4.3. Anyone have any suggestions?
Just browsing the forums for a WiFi issue my M8 has, to hopefully find a fix. This is what I have, not sure if it fits your symptoms as well:
Speedtest on network and bluetooth 11.39Mbps down / 3.85Mbps up
on network no bluetooth 13.98Mbps down / 3.98Mbps up
Speedtest on WiFi and bluetooth 2.53Mbps down / 5.53Mbps up
on WiFi no bluetooth 20.79Mbps down / 6.67Mbps up
Basically, if I keep my BT off, my speeds are fine and inline with what I expect to get, but if it's on it's at a crawl. Seems like WiFi and BT don't want to work in tandem. I haven't found much information on my issue yet, but I'm hoping to before I either do a a full reset or warranty replacement.

WiFi becomes Inactive on idle

I have a OPO, Nexus 5, iPad and Galaxy S5 on the same WiFi network and when my OPO goes on idle, it will stay on the WiFi network but lose internet connection after some time whereas my other devices wont. It's not a matter of the settings because I have left WiFi to be awake at all times and even turned off WiFi battery optimization. I'm having a tough time figuring out why this happens. I have to turn wifi on and off to regain internet.

Could be software, does it happen in CM11 nightlies?
Or maybe is the config for the wlan HW, I think OPO has a Qualcomm solution for WiFi, I haven't experienced this in my Nexus 5 (Broadcom WLAN) or 7 2013 (Qualcomm older WLAN I think).

I seem to be having the same issue. it's weird. I've been trying to do initial upload from Titanium Backup to my Box account and it sucks...
network is a netgear adsl router with the wifi turned off, wired to a netgear router running dd-wrt, and I also have a repeater that's a d-link dir-615 running dd-wrt... yeah not the simplest setup I know
Would be useful to know if those experiencing the issue have altered screen timeout settings.
I was managing to upload ~30mb at a time, but now it seems to be much less - 1mb or less. I'm not sure if that's because I turned the screen timeout down to lowest (15s) to see what happened, but I've now turned it back up to 30 mb but the amount I can upload hasn't increased with it :/ Well - except for once where I did manage to upload 30mb again - which was directly after I turned off adaptive backlight. but then after that it was down to less than 1mb again.
Really scratching my head here.
There appears to be a similar thread over on the OPO forums - https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/wifi-slows-to-a-crawl.75850/ - I'm posting this in and watching both

network is a netgear adsl router with the wifi turned off, wired to a netgear router running dd-wrt, and I also have a repeater that's a d-link dir-615 running dd-wrt... yeah not the simplest setup I know
Would be useful to know if those experiencing the issue have altered screen timeout settings.
