I have an odd problem. I'm using Handcent as the default SMS app instead of Hangouts. When I send a text, it shows double text in the app, but it doesn't actually send out double. The other side only gets 1 text which is cool. however, it is pretty annoying and takes up a lot of screenspace in the app.
When using hangouts to send text, it doesnt show double. Handcent recently updated it's app to support kitkat. Anyone else have isssues like this using third party SMS app on the N5?
No issues at all using this:

Confirmed, also having this issue with Handcent. Can't lose Handcent without losing popup message notifications, so I'll deal for now

Solution
Hi,
I had this problem also but think I figured it out! Go to Settings>> Apps>>All Apps >> Google Hangouts and Disable it. Then restart your phone. Things are working well on my Nexus 5 now when I send and only one message is shown in Handcent.
I had the same issue, and I corrected it by uninstalling the Handcent Emoji addon... If you have that installed, it tends to not play nice.
HTH!
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
I tried both suggestions, disabling Hangouts and uninstalling the emoji plugin (rebooting after each), and neither corrected the issue. Hopefully Handcent fixes the problem in an update soon!
I removed handcent and then reinstalled it and set it as default sms app before opening it the other day which resolved the issue for maybe 2 days then it just started showing double texts again
I had the issue, I removed it for now giving Hangouts a try.
I like the idea of 1 application to handle the functionality.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
GO SMS also had this but it stopped out of no where..
I just removed Handcent again and once again reinstalled it and made it the default sms app in settings before opening up Handcent and I'm back to showing one sent text again
Having the same issue, usually a reboot solves it for a minute or five. sent email to developer
i posted a fix one post up although lets hope they can sort it with just an install

not sure if that's a permanent fix. It's not working for me or any of the other methods people been posting about. I hope handcent can fix it soon.
Having same issue with mighty text on laptop. Using hangouts for all messaging on phone and mighty text when texting from laptop
Hancent shows double text in the app

Yes, i have also this problem. did anyone fixed this ?
I am having the same issue and I have made a little discovery: the thing only happen (at least for me) when the mobile data are activated. Yesterday I was turning crazy with Hangout that doesn't rung, handcent that made me send double sms and go sms that shows the popup window.
So I installed Go sms and deleted the other two apps: today when I was using my phone with mobile data enabled, it sent two sms (the other person received only one). Than turned off data, enabled Wifi and the issue stopped. It's quite weird
It's all happening to my handcent after upgraded to 4.4 I am getting double text out but not actually sending double to the receiver

I had this issue. Could never get it fixed. So instead I use 88sms. It took a bit to get used to it cause I've had handcent since the G1 but 88 has a pop up too and it doesn't seem to lag at all like Handcent seemed to do sometimes.

What messaging program is everybody using ? I am using the Handcent at the moment but sometimes it seems laggy.
Handcent is what I use! I like it, The feature that got me was the quick reply for messages. I have found that the lag has mostly gone away from the updates. The only problem that I have found was the option for the light up track ball does not work =\. I have the Hero CDMA.
Neither. Chomp does not handle MMS and Handcent significantly slows down the phone.

I haven't noticed a major slow down.
love Handcent, has very good features. I haven't notice it slowing down the phone either. I have noticed that sometimes receiving an MMS doesn't work. I very rarely get them so I switch to the regular for that. No big deal.

Same here, I just use the stock messages app.
But my gf loves handcent she has it all themed out with different icons for each person ringtones ect ect.
Both on fresh 1.1 and I can't tell Amy significant speed change between the two phones.

stock app ftw.
If I compose a new message, thestock app works great.... but I have hand cent just for the quick reply
I use the stock messaging app with SMS Popup installed. That way I get the speed of the stock and can still use quick reply from the popup. I haven't noticed any lag at all.
I was using handcent but wasnt impressed enough to keep it after the firmware update fixed the battery issue with the dialer.
Should add neither as an option, for those who use the default app.
Handcent. Haven't noticed any slowdown and since the last update mms seems to be working better. I like all the options, individual contact notifications and visuals especially.
I only use Handcent because it automatically resizes photos for you to put into MMS. With a 5 megapixel camera, I don't really feel like manually resizing every photo I want to send.
I use Handcent because the stock app marks incoming SMS one hour behind so my text timelines are all messed up.

Chomp does do MMS now. I used to use Handcent because Chomp didn't support MMS. Now I use Chomp because I think it runs faster and smoother than Handcent.

I found out today that Chomp does that too. I went to send a picture and it said the picture was too big and compressed it to send.
I started using Handcent because of the now-fixed SMS bug. I chose it over chompSMS because it supported MMS, back when chompSMS didn't. I have stuck with Handcent because of the reminder feature...
Is there another app that can perform the same function? ...it doesn't look like chompSMS has reminder capabilities.
I was using Handcent, then switched to stock. Started using Chomp a few days ago, but MMS wasn't working properly so I went back to Handcent. MMS works fine, and no lag so far.
I use handcent only because the default app had problems with the phone at launch and never changed back once the sleep problem was fixed. I used chomp for a while and wasn't to thrilled with it.

Details brother.
Are you using the stock messaging app? Are you rooted? What have you removed/altered?
I'm using hand cent I'm not using sms stock I'm rooted also

Handcent has been having issues for a lot of people lately, myself included.
I actually stopped using it until they fix it. The pop up would show up, my screen would unlock, but I wouldn't get a sound or vibe for 5 or more seconds after.
Aught I'll just use default sms thanks
-Monky_1
OK I don't know what I did, but now when my wife texts me I receive two messages - so now she's doubly annoying an naggy (joke). Anyone know how to fix this (not the annoying and naggy thing, the double text thing)?
Edit: It happens with both Handcent and stock messenger.

Do you get one message in each app or two in each?
If the latter and if she does also, you might try freezing one of the apps. I was getting the same message in both and froze the stock app.
Do have Handcent setup as default to handle both sms & mms?

Yep. She uses T-Mobile as well. For a while it happened why my sister and brother-in-law (also T-Mobile) texted. It's very annoying.
I have the same issue. It seems to be at random for me, with everyone I text. Hadn't figured out a pattern that let me figure out why it happens either. I'm using chompsms and get double texts on it. Weird...

Did that when I installed Hancent over a month ago.
As far I can tell this is a bug. I've had this for a while, sometimes worse than others. Hasn't been too bad lately, but I do get occasional double texts. There have been times it was every text though, sometimes up to 4 of them.N never had this issue with any phone other than this one though
Do you have an app installed called Organizer Widget ? Or any other app that has permissions to intercept text messages ? I had an issue with Organizer Widget where it would not send the "text received" signal unless I was on WiFi calling.
Try uninstalling apps that have this permission and see if it stops. Remember what the last app you uninstalled was.

From everything I've tried to find out about this in the past, it's a known issue with Gingerbread. Back on big red, My D1 running GPA15/16 had this same issue, BAD. My G2x on OTA 2.3.3 gets the random double text every once in a while, but it's far less often. There's really nothing you can do. I did find though that if I froze stock messenger I wouldn't get any text messages anymore (I think...don't really remember all that much). So my advice is just to disable notifications in the stock messenger and try not to get too upset by them.

The issue the OP is having is NOT that he is getting one notification in stock msging and one notification in Handcent, it's that in Handcent he is getting two notifications. He had already indicated that he disabled stock notifications.
OP, I have the same problem occasionally. I have no earthly clue what causes it, or how to fix it, but you're not alone.

I installed Go SMS because i love the features especially the pop notification. Using the app, I've come to realize that text messages are not being sent. It just stays there and never sends. I looked at HTC's messaging app and the text also displays there are being sent but never sends.
Has anyone else had a problem sending texts with GoSMS?
I uninstalled Go SMS and using just the default to see if Go SMS was the one causing the issue
maybe I am the only one.
I've had this issue as well. Sometimes it will just say text not sent and never send.
Other times I will get an error saying text not sent but it did indeed send so I end up sending two of the same.
Best thing you can do with this is pull the SIM card and re-insert it. This problem, if existing, affects more than just people who use GoSMS as GoSMS is just a skinned texting surrogate. Sure, it sends and receives texts, but it does so using the frameworks of the main messaging app on your device. I've encountered this problem with the main messaging app, and I just pull the SIM or put it in airplane mode for a few seconds then take it off and it's fixed it every time.
Hope this helps.

Does the issue go away after doing that or does it come back? Should I turn off the phone when I remove the sim or should I do it while it is on?
If a text doesn't send for me I can still send one right after and that one sends fine.
so for the past 2 days i used HTC's messaging app and everything always sent. just now i redownloaded GO SMS and the second text i sent, it did not send so it must be something else

For what it's worth, gosms works fine for me other than the recipient used to get duplicate messages. I froze the stock messaging app and changed gosms settings to control text delivery and it's been all good so far. It's not an ics compatibility issue, it's sense. Hope that helps

So i have found out what is causing my text not to send. If I reply to a text using the pop notification while I am in another app like Google Chrome or draw something, the text does not send. When I go to go sms, I can see the green arrow showing that it is sending but it never does. The only times I can successfully 100% of the time send a text from the pop up notification is if I am on the home screen instead of within another app. Can anyone else test this for me to see if I am the only one with this issue?

So even if you reply from the pop up notification while within another app, your text message sends?
Since there is no way to root the AT&T HOX without it being discovered by htc/at&t, I haven't rooted and therefore can't freeze the messaging app

I had completely forgotten about chomp. Thanks for reminding me. I started using it and while I still get messages not sending if I reply to a text from the pop up notification, it doesn't do it nearly as much as go sms. With go sms, the message not sending would happen one after another but not with chomp. And even though I don't like the sound, I've set chomp to make a sound after a successful sent message so at least I can tell if my message has sent without having to open the app.
Thanks again for mentioning chomp

I'm having the same issue with texts not sending from the pop up window. It doesn't happen all the time but enough that it's annoying and I always go to the app to make sure it sent, which kind of defeats the purpose of the pop up. I haven't noticed whether it was when I'm in another app or not. However, it's not that it just doesn't send, it's totally lost. There will be no record of it. Other times messages seem to just get stuck sending and I have to click edit and resend in order to get them to go through.
GO SMS has also become very laggy. I can't really type when it's sending or receiving a message. If I'm typing during this time, it's delayed in showing what I've typed and auto-correct and word suggestion don't work. Also, when I leave a conversation and go back to the main screen, it takes several seconds to update the threads. Long enough that I can click on one but then it takes me to the wrong one because it's updated. I thought maybe I just have too many messages. I've set it to limit messages to 700 per thread. Anyone else experiencing these issues? I think I'll try Chomp again until these issues are fixed.
I've just bought a Nexus 5 and when I type text messages with hangouts I can only see the last 4 lines of the message.
I'm in the habit of sending long texts - 5-6 texts long - with my previous phone, HTC One S, using their stock messaging app the message would scroll up the screen so I could see it all until it went off the top of the screen
How can I replicate that with Hangouts on my Nexus, or at least resize the reply window so that I can see more than 4 lines?
Cheers
There's one way I know that can solve your problem.
You need to have your phone rooted and Xposed installed.
Then there's a mod called "SMS Xposed" that gives you the option "unlimited textbox".
Which means "Removes the 3-lines height limit for the SMS typing box".
Hope this helps
Thanks. For the moments I'm not rooted so I've installed GO SMS Pro which offers what they call 'big edit'
When I use SMS Xposed I stop getting notified of messages. Hangouts and SMS.
