[Q] Maybe bricked? Idk? Help please - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hey everyone
Verizon SGS3
Earlier today, phone shut off randomly during use.
Phone won't power on without a battery pull.
Trying to boot normally: can see "samsung" for a split second, phone shuts off.
Trying to boot to recovery: get to screen where in the top left corner it says "recovery booting...", lasts for a split second, shuts off
Trying to boot so I can use ODIN: before I can even hit volume up to go into download mode, powers down
I was hoping I'd be able to get into recovery and then just do a factory reset, but I'm not given enough time before it powers down.
Is there any way for me to factory reset from pc?
Would this even work?
Any help is appreciated

You aren't bricked, it sounds like either a battery issue or a power button issue. Does it turn on completely when it's plugged in?

It does not turn on completely at all and hasn't for several hours now. The best I can do it get it to begin powering up, into the different modes, and then i get a black dead screen. Even if i try to power back up right after getting the black dead screen, nothing happens at all. I need to do a battery pull to attempt again.
Up until this day I've never had any battery or power button issues

I think it's your power button, if it were hard bricked it wouldn't show anything. Those symptoms sound like the power button is stuck in the on position when you're powering it up.
If you're under warranty send it into Samsung and they'll troubleshoot it.

Do you know if Samsung is going to give me a hard time because it's rooted?

Verizon will for sure. Why dont u find another s3 battery and check it first. If battery is bad it will not turn on regaurdless of whether its plugged in or not. Power goes through the battery.

Yes do that first, Verizon will care of you're rooted, but Samsung won't.

Did I fry my phone?!

I really dont understand what happened.
I'm running one of sean's builds for a few weeks now and everything has been running as expected. However, after charging from a higher amp charger, (An ASUS transformer wall charger) my phone now only bootloops. The only time I broke the bootloop was when I plugged it into my car charger.
I don't know what to do, is it possible to save or did I fry it with my charger?
Also, the phone powers on to the first and second samsung boot screens, then the screen goes dark, the phone vibrates 5-6 times, and restarts.
EDIT: I managed to get into recovery mode once, but it turned off from the seemingly bad power.
I have also tried a stock battery as well as an extended battery.
I used a 2A charger to charge my phone a couple of times, the phone only takes as much as it needs so I doubt that's the cause.
Can you get into recovery with OEM charger connected? And what about download mode?

There have been issues with the power button getting stuck and causing what seems like a boot loop. Check that first.

Is it possible something on my ROM spontaneously corrupted?
And my phone can do anything, except it always turns off. Sometimes I can get to the boot screen, but it turns off and tries to restart. So, I'm basically screwed with my warranty because there's enough for them to tell I'm rooted, but the phone won't stay on long enough to Odin.
Also I checked my power button, it doesn't appear to be stuck.
can it stay in dl mode w/o restarting, if yes go back to stock
To be honest the way you describe the issue it sounds like the power button is internally stuck or something. Try measuring how long since it boots to when it restarts if its always the same and around 10 seconds it's probably a hard reset from the power button.
I will start measuring that in a minute, thanks.
And after numerous attempts I finally managed to get it to go into download mode!
After timing it, it's always on 7.5-8 seconds of the reset.
So if that's the issue, is that fixable?
sounds like the power button, press really hard repeatedly on the button until it unsticks

Htc One S dead

Hello guys,
I'm experiencing something bad with my HOS. Briefly, yesterday morning I plug the phone from charger at 06.00 am. Play with it for a while and then go to work. Used it at work for a few phone calls until 10.00 am (so 4 hours on fully charge battery). Then at 10.00 am I went into a meeting and left the phone out of my sight for 20-30 minutes. When I came back from the meeting I realize that the phone was closed. I try to open it (power button) but nothing. Press power for 10-30 seconds with volume down - still no effect.
Then I took the charger (the original one that I always use to cherge it) and plug it, left it for 2-3 minutes and press power. The phone starts but all I have is the white screen with HTC logo and if I press the power button + volume down the phone goes into bootloader. That's all I can do with it for now.
I have stock rom, bootloader is locked and I never try to root the phone. Is it any chance to repair it by myself or I have to sent it to the repair shop.
many thanks in advance.

try holding the power button for 10-15 seconds, until all 3 buttons light up and the phone restarts itself. Let go of power button when after 3 buttons light up 3 times and see if that helps?
I've already do that. When I press power nothing happen. I'll have to plug into charger, let it for 2-3 minutes and then press power. The phone starts, white screen with HTC logo appears and then phone restarts and same white screen and .... again and again. If I hold volume down key then the phone enters into bootloader,I can use the options clear storage or factory reset, and restart the phone then same thing happens (white screen with logo and restart by itself). All these only when pluged. If unpluged nothing happen when I press power button.

Might sound silly but have you charged it for more then a few minutes because last time my phone died I had to charge it for about half hour before it would boot right.
I'll try this, but is strange if the phone run out of battery since it was used for about 4 hours since fully charged. Will be back with a feedback. Thanks for the tip.

Ya that's why I said it might be silly but still give it a try. I have seen odd battery drain where it could drain it in a few hours.
I say it's strange because I was on stock rom with same installed apps for about 2 months. Anyway the phone is now charging and I see something different with the led for charging as it turns orange as it should be when charging. Yesterday, when I try to start the phone, plugged in, the led was blinkering somehow. I'll be back with feedback later, I'll let the phone charge until led turns green.

Good news, after keep it to cherge until the led turns green, the phone boot up. I perform a factory reset immediatelly and an sd card clean up and now I'm installing my favourite apps. I'll be monitoring close my phone for the next days to see if sudden battery discharges happens.
Many thanks for your advice @darknites:good:

Np dude. Not sure where the drain is I used apps to look and it showed nothing and only seen it on sense roms and mostly only happened after flashing and setting it up but if you see it just roboot and it should fix it.
my phone is now dead the same way.
battery was fully drained, when turning on it doesn't go further than the bootanimation ( stays at htc one s logo).
Now i have fully charged the battery (green led) and it still doesn't boot up the right way.
Any help? I don't want to run the RUU.

Could try reflashing the rom if that dont work think you going to have too RUU it but use one that has the same Hboot as you got now.
What do you mean by not boot the right way? Can you pass the white screen with Htc logo? Did you try factory reset? Was your phone rooted?

I believe (but can not back it up) that you could have just re-flashed the boot image only. Still 10x probably.. altho that may have been the charging time, not the flashing.. who knows.

Phone won't boot

Hey guys,
My phone shut off unexpectedly today and now won't turn back on. When I try to power it on I see the Google logo for a couple seconds and then it'll just shut off again. I tried holding the volume up/down buttons to access the bootloader, but right after I get to the screen it just restarts itself again.
Connecting to power (AC or USB) causes it to constantly reboot over and over, it just shows the Google logo for a couple seconds and then restarts again.
Any ideas on what I can do?

Provide more information for a starter - stock? unlocked bootloader? rooted? third party recovery? rom and if yes which?
If it's stock I'd RMA it.
If not what did you do immediately before the problem started?
try holding the power button for > 2 seconds which should turn it off completely, leave it on a wall charger for at least a couple of hours then turn it back on - I doubt it'll fix the problem but it's a simple thing to try...

Everything on it is stock, no ROM, not rooted. I had just taken it out of my pocket to check the time, put it back in my pocket and then felt it vibrate, took it back out to see it at the Google logo and haven't been able to get it started since. There was one or two times when it got past the Google logo and started to show the start up animation (the four colours bouncing around or whatever it is) but then it shut off again.
I tried holding the power button to completely turn it off, but plugging it into the wall charger just causes it to repeatedly attempt to boot like I mentioned earlier. I'll leave it for a while and hope for the best
Sounds like the mobo is bad. Most likely will have to rma it.

Maybe not. Sounds like a stuck power button to me.
OP does the phone just endlessly repeat this cycle? If so it's rebooting itself do to a stuck power button. One other users already reported similar issues and his power button was indeed stuck. Mash the power button hard for a minute to see if you can unstick it.

Thanks so much, really wasn't looking forward to waiting for weeks while the RMA went through. The button didn't appear to be stuck - it was still clicky - but after mashing it for a minute it started up normally and appears to be fine now.

brother the issue is gone, as mentioned "sticky power button" was causing it. read the thread before posting. btw thanks for effort anyway... haha
:laugh::silly:
Hi all. Sorry to reopen an old thread (but xda suggested I check here before making my own thread).
I think we have the exact same problem with a Nexus 5. Unfortunately, bashing the power button doesn't seem to be helping (and makes me feel slightly silly .
Anyone know how much effort it would be to take it apart to get to the part that's stuck? Any good instructions?
Thanks.
Weird, I have the same issue starting a few hours ago. I updated to the Oct 17 beta of Cataclysm then a hour later it happened. But was told it sounds like the power button issue.
Took it apart, tried to fix it. If plugged in I can get into the bootloader, but then it reboots again. I've tried tapping it on a hard surface, and it gets seems like it almost fixes it because it'll connect to my laptop but then reboots again.
Could it be the battery? It was fully charged but then died as I was deleting hundreds of photo's in Dropbox to move photo's over from my phone because it was full.
I too am running into this same issue. My screen cracked so I replaced the digitizer with some success. In the process I damaged the battery and needed to replace it. When I got the new battery and replaced it my phone is now unusable.
When unplugged: I turn on the phone and it's running the ANDROID animation then turns off.
When plugged in: I turn on the phone, the ANDROID animation runs then the phone restarts and continues the process over and over again.
I then flashed the phone with Marshmallow and the same thing happens. Except now that I flashed it I get the Android icon with the spinning gear. So; I flashed it back to 5.1.1, but the same result.
Could I have physically damaged something inside or is it a battery issue? Thanks for any insight.

Soft Bricked?

My Galaxy s3 turned off randomly today at about 50% battery life. I tried getting it to turn back on, but my power button is broken. So, if I take out the batter and put it back in, it will say "Samsung" for about 2 seconds, and just turns off again. If I plug it in, it doesn't do anything. Sometimes if I take out the battery, put it in, then plug it in while it's turning on, it'll show an empty battery for about a second, then turn off. What can I do? I can't take it to Verizon because it's rooted. This isn't newly rooted, it's been rooted for about 4-5 months, so I don't think that's the problem. There is no custom rom and I've tried a new battery. I want to fix my phone, but I really want to keep the pictures on it. Any help?
Edit: The problem is my power button being defective. If I could just boot one time to backup everything, I'll be happy.

What rom are you on and what were you doing just before it turned off? Can you boot into Download mode from a powered off state? That's the key thing.

Thank you for the reply.
I'm on whatever the default rom is. I never loaded a custom one. And before it turned off, I wasn't doing anything. I believe I simply pulled it out of my pocket. I figured I accidentally turned it off on my own because since my power button is broken, it will ask me if I want to turn it off at random times. I'm not sure if I can boot into download mode. I thought I saw a tutorial on getting into download mode without using the power button, but I'll have to find it again and try it out.
Hold volume up, home and then put the battery in. Sounds like the power button is stuck on, so you should be able to boot into the stock recovery and wipe day. Though with the power stuck on, it's probably the signal from the button that says the issue.
Do you have the vz extended warranty insurance? If so, take it in and they'll give you a new one. It covers any phone you activate (I'd never consider not having that coverage)

Well, I tried what you said and saw "Recovery booting", but then it shut off.
I have insurance, but my phone is also cracked, so they won't replace it.
Edit: I've been able to get it into download mode, but it just turns off still. It's definitely the power button because I don't even have to hold it to go into download mode.

Damn.
Honestly, if it were me, I'd raise Hell at a store with a manager until they did a warranty replacement. Crack or no, its the power button you're complaining about, so if there are no marks on the power button, they can't claim it's user-damage (like a drop).

Could very well be that the phone has already been updated to 5.1.1. That may be the reason that you can't flash OE2. Did you try flashing the 5.1.1 firmware?

Are you using the home button as your enter selection button?
And have you tried stock recovery yet?

Power off phone, hold volume up, home, power buttons. It will go to a blue screen. Wait a bit. It can take a few.
oh ****. so it looks like the battery is at 0 percent. right when i hit factory reset, i unplug the cable and then it shows 0% battery and a picture to plug in my phone. but whenever i plug in my phone it bootloops with the blue screen!!!
can i charge phone in maintenance mode or download mode? i also have a wireless charger but that loops to the blue screen as well

Might just have to get a new battery.
So, you are saying that the phone will not power down correctly in maintenance mode when you volume down to "power off device" and hit the home button?

i dont think its the physical battery, i think its a software glitch or brick. its stuck in a bootloop so it wont charge
if i could get some juice on it maybe that would let me flash via odin.
im not sure if download or maintenance mode allows the device to charge

I Google it and found where it would charge. Leave it hooked up in download mode. If it still doesn't charge (probably take a lot longer) it is problem the physical battery. Just like a car, a bad battery won't accept a charge.
ok im download mode now and I'm letting it sit on the charger! I'll go back to it after letting it sit for an hour.
only reason i didnt think it was the physical battery was because i couldnt get to a mode where I could charge! it was stuck in the bootloop

hopefully it'll hold a charge in an hour!
just curious, is the blue screen here: https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.ne...=d3954f68626726729ccdf84dcc14b159&oe=55FC57F7
part of the boot animation at all?

No, that is the screen you goto before you go to stock recovery. Also, as you are downloading via odin, though at that time it will have a progress bar on it as well.

I think I would try a battery. Most people want at least 50% on their battery when they odin.
