Camera focus time(software problem?) compared to HTC One - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My question is do you think the slow focus time is software and will get better? If not I'm selling my nexus and keeping my One. Does anyone else have kids they use their phones to take pictures of? I love my nexus but I can't get it to focus quick enough to get a picture of my son. The HTC One takes them so much faster than the Nexus.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

The Nexus is better at low light in my opinion and also at portraits or scenes with no moving people... I'm very impressed with that aspect, but when I'm taking portraits I have a good camera for that.

Generally the stock Android camera app is regarded as being pretty terrible.
Replace it with a store app like Focal (which should be getting an update for the Nexus 5 soon, if not already). The camera itself is great.

Thanks, I hope that is soon.. I tried using nexus at 5mp still just as slow
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

Ok so I understand this is very unscientific but I have the Instagram app on both the One and Nexus... Instagram snaps photos much quicker on the one. I'm not sure focal is going to help dramatically... Any thoughts?

[Q] Of all the android phones you've had, which had the best camera/camcorder

I've had a moment, evo 4g, epic, evo shift, optimus s, and nexus s 4g, and galaxy tab. Out of all of them, I think the epic had the best camera and camcorder. Camera because, even though it wasn't true to life, the colors really stood out. The camcorder because it could do 720p @ 30fps. Second place I think would go to the ns4g.
What are your opinions?
Nokia N8, best cam of any smartphone ever released.
well ive only had three, the Hero, EVO, and my beloved nexus s. Nexus s hands down the best one Ive had. Evo was great for outdoor shots but anything slightly dim wass trash. I belive the nexus records better(evo's HD recording was compressed to hell by HTC)
the x10 stock sony app was pretty baller.
Epic camera and camcorder no contest wish the nexus had the hardware

Yes epic camera was the best for me. Moment-Epic-evo-Ns4g

The Epic. One reason I really prefer Samsung devices.
My Xperia Arc had the best camera I'd ever seen on a cell phone, followed by my Captivate.
The Nexus S may not take very good video but I think the photos are on the level of the Captivates for sure.
Galaxy S hands down. I picked Nexus but then went back to Galaxy S cos of its camera. I have a 2 year old daughter and many moments to capture.

For me it is the iPhone 4. Hands down the best smartphone camera I've ever used. The Nexus S was the next best...actually nearly on par with the iPhone 4.
I have an HTC HD2, HTC Inspire 4G, Samsung Infuse 4G and Samsung Focus. I did have an HTC HD7. And out of all of these the iPhone 4 and Nexus S are the best.

Though the Nexus S is made by Samsung, it's made to Google's specs and standards. It truly is an outstanding phone...the Google iPhone. Disregard the Samsung moniker on the Nexus S. Consider it made by Google because it's all Google through and through.
I know Samsung phones tend to have lower-end cameras. My Focus and my Infuse both have less quality than the iPhone and Nexus S.
Had a chance to play around with a SGSII last weekend, this became my favorite Android-driven phone cam (, still beaten by the Nokia N8, but that's not an Android, Samsung is getting close).
To explain myself of why i prefer the epic camera (not galaxy s phones, the captivate is only equal to the nexus). The epic has an outstanding anti shake feature, it's quality is higher and I haven't found a light situation that it doesn't shine in. the video recording has a hd processor. Even at concerts, dark outside, the quality is great. Despite all this the nexus squashes the epic as an Android phone. That's why I use the nexus and keep an epic in my pocket for video.

720p video recording with any custom rom?

Hello to all!
Im planning to buy a Nexus s. The only thing is annoying me is the video recording capability. Is there any custom rom with I can record videos in 720p?
Nope. Its not capable.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
i will tell you even though there is no 720 video is actually really good borderline amazing.
I was a little disappointed but then after using it I realized how good it was and how much less space they take up not being HD.
I sittl dont get why the nexus s doesnt record in 720p and the galaxy does, they're almost IDENTICAL
you said it: almost!
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Almost identical yea. Actually identical, no. If the camera can't do it, it doesn't matter what your ROM is. That's like asking if your Ford focus will go faster when Tony Stewart drives it.

I was under the assumption the camera in the Nexus was the same Exact camera from the GS line. My takes photos and low res videos no different than my Epic did. Why isn't the camera capable?
Search the forums. This has been covered many many times.

I disagree, I too had an iphone 4s. IMO this camera is just as good, with more features. But to each his own!
Ive taken several pictures and videos. I think the camera is great and super responsive. As soon as I touch the shutter button the picture is already taken and in my photo gallery.
The zoom on it is fairly decent too.
Maybe we could use this thread for people to post what custom settings are working for them. I hear the camera needs a little adjustment out of the box.

I just wish it had hold to focus like the Galaxy Nexus (it was there in early and later versions, but gone after one of the updates). It worked very well. I like to be more in control of the focus. But the burst mode kind of makes up for it. I don't use it much but it could be pretty handy.
I love this camera as well, but I will say the focus is a bit of a problem. Any slight movement and focus is gone and it has to try again. Great for stills though
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
Seems like it has a tendency to overexpose especially when outside. May need to keep it at -1 on exposure.
I'm pretty happy with the speed. No shutter lag at all! The Note would have motion blur sometimes in direct sunlight.
The quality, when viewed on a pc, is very good also. Still need more time to play, but I'm a pretty happy camper right now.

Thanks for the tip. I noticed it kept refocusing while i already had my daughter in the center of the frame(of course three year olds move a lot)
I took about 150 photos yesterday at the Highline in NYC and can definitely say the camera is awesome. Nearly as good as my Canon S90. Have never had an iPhone to compare, but my iPhone owning friends were very impressed.

I thought my Note took better pictures, but it may have to do with auto focus and anti-shake on the the Note.

How is the camera on the one S?

Hello,
How are you? I am considering a One S, but the camera is an important feature for me, especially in regard to image quality.
So, with that in mind, I would like to know how is the camera on the One S, in regard to the lens and sensor. Is it exactly the same on the One X?
Thank you.
Cheers

From what I saw, the HTC one x seems to compress the files more and that results in more noise. Is that so?

The GS 3 camera isn't better, in some shots, it is, however, in other shots it isn't, overall for photos, they are more or less the same, neither are far better.
The S (and X I think?) struggle with bright reds a bit though (become far too over saturated and you just get a glow effect, have to reduce the saturation by one level when you are taking a photo of a red petal etc.)
1080P recording is far better on the GS 3 though, the light metering and smoothness is great when compared to the one S/X. However, the stereo audio recording sucks (unless it has been fixed recently?).
The 2 things, which are far better on the X and S without a doubt is the camera UI and features.
Whilst both the X and S are the same for camera, the 1080P video recording looks smoother and better on the S and I think the photos from the X look sharper[some have said that the S photos look sharper] (although there isn't a big enough difference to worry about)

I currently have a galaxy note. But I am a bit tired of the big size. I would like a phone to be able to handle with one hand.
Has such, I am afraid the One X might still be to big.
So I am eyeing the S.
The price difference is just 50 euros here between the two.
I would also like a better camera because I am leaving my camera at home more often and relying on my phone camera...
So? Is the one S a good choice?
is the camera an upgrade from my note in IQ and low light shooting?
Cheers

Moto X Style/Pure Camera Photo Samples

All I have to say, is that the camera on this thing looks like it does an awesome job to me!
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk
Yep I agree! Some of those samples look really sharp & detailed to me but I'm not really that picky about smart phone cameras. I think the cam on my nexus 6 is pretty good so I'm looking forward to the pure edition quite a bit.
Since I use the phone for basically all my "photography" (if we want to call it that ). I like a good quality camera. But given I'm uploading to Google Photos. I hope they don't diminish the quality of photos too much. I'm using the "unlimited" option, so Google scales things down a bit if they desire.
But if I want to save off a good quality pick to the SDcard, that's a nice option to have.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk
I'm considering this phone as the next one to get. As far as it goes, the camera (good or bad) is not a deal breaker for me. I don't use the camera enough to care. To each his/her own.
Disregard. I posted in the wrong forum. Wasn't paying enough attention to where I was!
The daylight and average light shots look fantastic, but the night shots aren't impressive. I feel like if we were able to get OIS we could get by with slower shutter speeds and therefor less noise.

I wish they had OIS and laser focus.
I think a 13 or 16 MP is plenty, they could focus spending the extra money on other stuff.
I hope this camera is better than the OP2 and Nexus 6 I
As long as the camera is better than the m8s (which I am almost certain it is) then that's a good enough upgrade. The m8s camera is so horrid tha its the main reason for my switch.
Well its Using Sony's new Exmor RS IMX230 which from the sample photos look damn good!!
Sent from my A0001 using Tapatalk
camera looks really nice to me.. good enough w/o OIS.. That night mode seems pointless though
Wow, looks great! Still gonna play it safe and wait for a few reviews tho.
I don't care so much about the lack of OIS... (would have been a nice option) but I'm interested in the quality of slowmo videos (720p/120fps). I owned a Sony Xperia Z3 and there slowmo was awsome by the way "steadyshot" worked very very well !! Now I have a Note 4: pictures are looking great, video is looking great but slowmo is a shame! I think LG G4 suffers from the same problem...
I hope Moto x style will perform better in slomo...
If the moto x style cam is able to produce similar pics of quality like my note 4...that would be cool thing...
